A zombie novel It was just supposed to be a fun weekend camping in the mountains. Things don’t always go according to plan. When an experimental new diet pill goes horribly awry, a disparate group must work together to try to stop the zombie apocalypse from destroying the world as we know it. As if zombies weren’t bad enough, things get more complicated when one of their number starts to go a little crazy and they have to worry about the potential psycho-killer in their midst. When life turns into something ripped from the screens of horror movies, we all know that not everyone will make it out alive. But with the combined survival knowledge of horror movie buffs Lucy and Mac, some of them just might make it to the sequel.
what starts out as a simple horror romp, reminiscent of B-movie horror classics (co-eds, camping, zombies, serial killers, conspiracies, bio-engineered pathogens) is transformed into a farcical, hilarious, and at times truly gripping and terrifying commentary on the Horror genre itself.
Belinda Dunford's style is loose and informal, with her character's inner monologues reflecting the authentic speech and thought patterns of modern day. If her characters begin as a stereotypical horror bunch - the wise-cracking know it all, the tough as nails strong and silent type, the strident feminist, and the pink princess barbie girl - they all fold perfectly into the dynamic map she displays of the genre's conceits and tropes - laid out masterfully by the character of Lucy, resident film student and horror movie buff. Unlike Randy from Scream, she's fully cognizant of the situation, and points out those perfectly timed genre moments without breaking the fourth wall or losing her characterization. She's not so much winking at the audience as much as she's winking at the entire genre, and those lucky enough to know the rules.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book - it was a refreshibg take on the Zombie phenomenon, which is usually so serious and so sad. From beginning to end, the fast friendships between Lucy and Lia and Connor and Luca grounded the novel and gave it a sense of playfulness so often overlooked in books of this type, it really gave the novel it's heart. I loved seeing female friendships portrayed this way - with strong, tough women who love each other fiercely, who can get angry at one another without becoming catty, and who will always, always fight for each other.
there's a soft spot in my heart for just about every character in this book, and the plot is both believable and fun. if I could describe it in one word, it would be: romp. if I could describe it in two, all i'd say would be: BUY IT.
The friendships, the strength of the women, the humour! This book is such a refreshing twist on a classic genre. Finally we see characters who don't live in an alternate universe where zombies aren't a thing! The references to zombies is, surprisingly, one of the only times I've seen zombies actually referred to as such in a book or movie. Belinda's writing style is clear, humorous and just a joy to read. I definitely recommend!
What a great twist to the Zombie genre. Unique and captivating. It seems I'm using the term unique quite a bit lately but with a Zombie novel, there seems to be one common baseline that is the foundation of all stories. I've read many many of this genre and that seems to be my findings but lately I find I'm coming across a lot of originality in New authors. When you've read as many books as I have, coming across originality is like waking up and realizing it's Christmas. There is only so much one can do creating a Zombie story. Characters are different, survival techniques vary, etc., but with most you know pretty much what's coming down the road. Not with this book! I was kept guessing and many times, pleasantly surprised, was excited because I guessed wrong. Many kudos to this author.. Great Job and Thank You!
