Beyond the Wastes of Khulakorum, a storm is rising . . .
The Shaper of Ages is gone, and along with her, the Breaker-yet gods are not the only threat to the peace of the living.
Aldis Tennech, the once-great general of the armies of Gal'dorok, finds himself in exile. His only hope of reclaiming glory lies in the hands of a self-proclaimed emperor, and the unearthly powers that put him there. Meanwhile, improbable alliances are forged in the north as unexpected enemies rear their heads and threaten ruin-with a single thread in common, connecting them all.
In the sequel to his award-winning novel Gift of the Shaper, D. L. Jennings once again brings to life an epic tale of war and chaos as earthly armies fight for otherworldly prizes. Ancient powers lying dormant must be called upon, bringing strength to those who need it and conquest to those who seek it; battles will rage and cities will fall, but only the most desperate or reckless would seek . . .
Awaken the Three is an incredible follow-up to Gift of the Shaper and honestly, I’m still reeling from everything that happened, especially in that last 25 percent. I need time to emotionally unpack it all because… wow.
This book introduces quite a few new characters and points of view, which really expanded the world in such a rich and layered way. At first, I was a little worried I’d get lost, but having a physical copy made it so much easier to keep track of who’s who. Every new perspective added something meaningful, and I especially loved how they gave more backstory and depth to some of the original characters from book one.
Around the 65 percent mark, the pacing slowed down a bit for me, but once it picked back up, it really picked back up. The final stretch was intense, twisty, and completely unputdownable. There were moments I just sat there thinking, “Wait… what just happened?”
DL Jennings knocked it out of the park again. This series keeps getting better and more emotionally gripping. If you’re into epic fantasy with heart, depth, and wild turns, this is one to pick up.

Meanwhile, improbable alliances are forged in the north as unexpected enemies rear their heads and threaten ruin-with a single thread in common, connecting them all.

. . . to awaken the three.
Review: I think the author did well with the sequel. I enjoyed this book more than I did the first one and I think the author did well advancing the plot and continuing the world building.
However the pacing continues to be a problem for me in this series and I also felt that the characters weren't as well developed in this book as they were in the first one.
Awaken the Three is book two in the Highglade series. The way Jennings writes such well-developed and complex characters followed by strong and rich world building, makes my fantasy loving heart so happy. It’s a dream for imaginative mind like readers who loved the classic fantasy books like LOTR and wheel of time.
This book, similar to the first, is multi-POV with just as much twists and turns spanning to the different territories and the troubles that everyone is facing; whether it be war, traitors, or the calling of the all mighty three to destroy The Breaker. While some are taking on a what seems an impossible task others are trying to reclaim things lost. We are following some familiar faces but also a few new ones, good and bad, bringing even more battles, hidden identities, and yes, betrayal.
The journey has only begun and with the events that happen at the end of book one (I still haven’t forgiven you Jennings) our reluctant hero Thornton has his work cut out for him on top of processing his world being turned upside down.
Across the lands Aldis Tennech of Khala Val’ur, finds himself in exile. Once the general of all the armies of Gal’dorok, he hopes to reclaim that glory but at the hands of self-proclaimed emperor and unearthly powers.
Kethras the Kienari, a legendary cat-like creature is still my favorite followed by the BA Sera, second in command of the Valurian army as a close second. Both loyal and fierce warriors to their friends and leaders. If something happens to them know that I will riot. This book does end on another cliff hanger and no less shocking than book one might I add.
“Awaken the Three” is the sequel to D. L. Jennings’s debut novel, “Gift of the Shaper.” It follows some familiar characters from its predecessor and introduces several new ones. Jennings takes his readers to mysterious and unexplored reaches of Derenar and Gal’dorok as armies clash over their claims to an ancient city.
Jennings’s greatest strength lies in writing excellent battle sequences. This includes everything from small skirmishes with one or two participants to full scale clashes between armies. His simple and straight-forward prose lends itself to these action-packed scenes, creating a quick pace and an extra sense of urgency to an already tenuous situation.
Religion and mythology play a huge roll in the various civilizations introduced throughout the Highglade series, and “Awaken the Three” is not an exception. Jennings builds a vast mythos that’s weaved into the lives of his characters and the landscape of the novel. One of the challenges of writing such an expansive religion is explaining it within the story without dumping too much information on the reader at once. Sometimes, in an effort to avoid that problem, the opposite happens; the reader is left with too little information. That is the unfortunate case here.
It’s obvious this world’s religion runs deeply throughout every civilization introduced by Jennings, but it’s not always well-explained to the reader. With such an extensive religious system playing a pivotal role within the novel, explaining it precisely and clearly to the reader is vital. There are parts of “Awaken the Three” that are very confusing to the reader, because the author has built such a complicated religion, one that his characters understand intimately, but that his readers do not.
Multiple points of view are another challenging aspect many fantasy novels handle in different ways. There are parts of this book that handle it well, and other parts that do not. There are many different points of view to balance in just this one book, and that includes narrators that readers are already familiar with as well as new ones.
There’s an ambitious number of narrators in “Awaken the Three,” and not all of them contribute equal parts to the story. With a larger number of narrators, it’s important to create a reason for the audience to care about each one. Some of these narrators were also only used once or twice, and they simply weren’t featured enough in the story. Their stories are barely introduced before they’re wrapped up. Many of them feel unfinished. The narrators who were initially introduced in Gift of the Shaper are more fully developed than the new ones. The older narrators also carry the weight of the main plotlines. These were clearly the characters that the author was more comfortable writing as.
“Awaken the Three” explores the consequences of the characters’ decisions in the first novel. Author D. L. Jennings successfully expands that initial conflict, bringing his readers deeper into his world. That conflict is one of this novel’s greatest strengths. The strongest change that could be made to upcoming novels in the Highglade series is focusing in on the most important narrators and disregarding the less important ones. That being said, “Awaken the Three is still a solid read. Any fan of “Gift of the Shaper” is sure to enjoy this adventurous and action-packed follow-up!
This is the sequel to the first book in the series and thank God I just didn't have to wait for it since it's already out or else I feel I would have died in anticipation, lol! The second book follows a well interweaved story of Aldis Tennech, the once-great general of the armies of Gal'dorok, finds himself in exile. His only hope of reclaiming glory lies in the hands of a self-proclaimed emperor, and the unearthly powers that put him there. Meanwhile, improbable alliances are forged in the north as unexpected enemies rear their heads and threaten ruin-with a single thread in common, connecting them all. . . The book starts with an interesting map, mind me it's important, find it yourself if it really is! This book as I predicted is definitely a more bigger version of everything I read in the first book, everything here is so grand and royal, whether it's the suspense or thrill or characters, it makes things more clear because many loose ends came together and it formed something no reader could expect. The war against humaity, or rather the epic war against good and evil makes the plotline more dynamic! I am sure it will take time for you to get into the story, once 100 pages in, I was like OMG, especially when it comes to important unveiling scenes, things are so well portraited! It's not just magical, dark and entertaining but it also gives out many life lessons throughout but only for the readers who are willing to learn! I would request you all to read it slow, I too completed it in five days I guess but reading slow makes it more interesting! I love how the suspense was built, if you are a fantasy lover, just don't miss it out. Go for it! Again, best part was definitely writing, it subtle and dangerous at the same time! . . Waiting for more books from Jennings! Rating: 4.75🌟
"Awaken the Three" by D.L. Jennings is epic fantasy with good versus evil, supernatural against humanity, and dark battles between moments of peace. With multiple plot lines, the book moves quickly via a well established cast of characters.
Characters are clearly defined. This made it really helpful to differentiate them from each other since there are so many of them. The descriptions are vivid, creating clear images.
The scenes are action packed and move the plot lines quickly. Stealth and battles flowed excitedly with less stressful moments and character building.
Throughout the book, the writing style is clear yet dramatic; modern yet lending to an archaic fantasy.
"Small fires still burned, feeding greedily on corpses and grass. The dead armor melted to them like purple-and-gold caskets, lay still in repose."
The glossary of people and places made it easier to keep track of all the various unusual names, characters, and relationships. It was a handy resource. At times I found the plot murky and the mix of characters difficult to keep track of, so this glossary was a handy resource.
Maps are included which emphasize the large and diverse world the author has created. It was fun to go back to the maps while reading to better imagine where places and people were win relation to each other.
This is book two of a series. I have not read book one, so I felt a little lost especially at the beginning. The tools the author provided (glossary, maps) along with his excellent writing skills helped me to jump in.
"I just want to go back to Highglade," he continued, "and do what I'm good at - blacksmithing. It's what my father raised me to do." He looked away, lowering his voice. "And the last time I checked, swinging a hammer at an anvil doesn't have to involve taking people's lives."
Awaken The Three was an action packed novel by @dljennings
I was so stunned when I finished this book that I needed to reread the last 100 pages to make sure I really understood what I had just read. Like... WTF, David!? 🤣 I have so many questions. Good thing I have book 3 lined up and ready to go. I expect answers! 🤨
The multiple POVs were sometimes challenging but also did a good job at keeping you on the edge of your seat. So many new characters were introduced. Previous ones had a more developed story arc and it was nice to get to know them better.
Again, the short chapters made this book super ultra easy to binge read. The pacing will leave you breathless once again. It's everything I wished Wheel of Time could have been in terms of pacing.
The story really took a turn in book 2. You still follow Thornton in his quest to find Miera and understand what he is but you also experience war on the other side of the world with Tennech. I can't wait to see both sides meet because they are technically on opposite sides. You get attached to all of them and those emotions get confusing.
If you're looking for an addicting story, this is it! I'm curious to see where the story will lead us next. Read this if you liked the idea of Wheel of Time but couldn't get into it.
Awaken the Three began a little ahead of me, having not read book one, so I took a little time to explore the maps and glossaries provided by the author. I'm so very glad he did because the complex, multi-story plot lines, and multi-dimensional characters deserve a reader who comprehends what is going on when beginning book two before book one.
Be that as it may, the beautifully constructed mytho-fantasy action-intense story grabs you early and refuses to let go. Jenning's writing style is contemporary enough to allow pages to turn quickly, while just lyrical enough to add a dramatic and archaic ambience to the completely immersive landscape.
MC Aldis Tennech is the perfect combination of staunch military general and uncertain commoner, who seeks to reclaim his former glory regardless of the cost. Awakening The Three may not be the best answer to his problem; the perils of doing so are greater than he imagines. Is his confidence stronger than the danger he faces?
This is a sweeping, epic fantasy on the scale of Tolkien and Erikson. There's far far more for a reader to explore than characters and places. There are gods and unearthly powers; ancient mysteries and entire cultures; tales of wars long past, suspense, battles, betrayals, deaths. If you long to lose yourself into another time and place, the Highglade Series is one you savor again and again.
This book is a sequel of GIFT OF THE SHAPER by D.L. jennings and that's the reason I badly waiting for this book.
Story revolves around Aldis Tennech, the once-great general of the armies of Gal'dorok. He is known as the "Dagger of Derenar and the Caller of Gwarái". He always have a plan for any situation.
But suddenly he finds himself in exile. He wants to reclaim his glory which lies in the hands of a self-proclaimed emperor, and the unearthly powers that put him there.
In the same time, improbable alliances are forged in the north as unexpected enemies rear their heads and threaten ruin-with a single thread in common, connecting them all.
So what happens with him? Why a man with plan is helpless?? Is he succeed in his mission.
To get all Answers go and read the book.
This book is full of Chaos, war, suspense, drama and everything which makes this book very interesting and engaging.
I love the idea showing Maps in the starting because it's really important to find yourself.
Language used by the author is very easy and narration is perfect.
Author build the suspense to the end that makes plot very interesting.
Similar to the first Highglade novel, this novel isn't too bad, but neither was it great for me either. I enjoyed the first novel, Gift of the Shaper, slightly more, but only just slightly.
My biggest gripe with this novel is the constant back and forth between characters and the characters themselves. I feel like you just do not get enough time with each character to truly appreciate them and then when events occur that affect said characters, it doesn't impact me in the way it would if we spent more time with them.
It's only done a few times from what I can recall, but some events are told and then retold, as if it were happening again, through the perspective of another character in near proximity. It may be a personal preference, but I'm not a fan of that kind of storytelling. I'd rather have a single timeline to follow, outside of events that have happened years before the current events have taken place.
With that said, what occurs in the novel is exciting and interesting and the world itself is impressive! How it's presented prevents me from giving it a rating higher than a 2.75 (or 3) out of 5.
"Awaken the Three" is a captivating continuation of the beloved Highglade series, immersing readers once again in a rich tapestry of classic fantasy. With its multiple perspectives, this installment expertly weaves together diverse storylines, characters, and settings, allowing us to fully explore the expansive world Jennings has meticulously crafted.
One of the standout features of this book is the notable improvement in character dialogue. The interactions feel more vibrant and authentic, fostering a deeper emotional connection to the characters compared to the first book. Each point of view is distinctly drawn, enhancing the character-driven narrative that I find so engaging.
The journeys the characters embark on are both thrilling and unpredictable, filled with unexpected twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. Jennings has truly elevated the storytelling, making it a delight to follow each character’s unique path.
I can’t wait to dive into the next installment, "Days of the Dark"! This series continues to impress, and I’m eager to see where the adventure leads next.
Book 2 in The Highglade Series did not disappoint. You are given multiple POVs that create a fast-paced, action packed epic fantasy that will leave you on the edge of your seat! Not to mention that absolutely stunning cover! 🔥
D.L. does it again with the twists and turns, suddenly throwing you for a loop you probably didn't expect. I love his ability to take multiple lives and situations then join them all towards the end. Everyone's story somehow correlates with one another throughout, and once you come to those points - everything falls into place (good and bad).
The rich world building and complex, but somehow relatable in a way, characters had me on awe. With the continuation from Book 1, we meet new characters that somehow tie themselves in beautifully with our MCs from GOTS. I laughed, gasped (almost yelling at D.L. a few times) and couldn't stop turning the pages to see what happened next. And the battle sequence?! Incredible.
Once again, his attention to detail, strong female leads, and ability to leave you craving more by the end of each chapter is why I'll continuously reach for his work.
Another 5 star read from the very talented D.L. Jennings!
Awaken the Three takes everything I loved about Gift of the Shaper and cranks it up. For a 500+ page book, the pacing is incredible—it actually read faster than Book 1 did, which is saying something.
The character arcs are where this one really shines. Thornton’s journey, as he uncovers family secrets and grows into a stronger, more compelling character, is handled beautifully.
I also loved the introduction of new characters—Venn, Benji, Lily, and Rathma all added so much depth and energy to the story. The Farstepper lore expanding, plus the introduction of werewolves, was absolutely badass.
The writing itself is incredible. Jennings keeps the worldbuilding rich and immersive without ever bogging things down, and the dialogue and character progression make every scene matter.
This series is shaping up to be one of my favorites (pun absolutely intended). It’s rare to find a sequel that not only matches the first book but surpasses it, and Awaken the Three does exactly that.
Awaken The Three is an epic story and it is the sequel of 'Gift of the Shaper'. It is Book 2 in the HIGHGLADE Series.
The story features Aldis Tennech of Khala Val'ur. Aldis Tennech was once the general of all the armies of Gal’dorok. He is the “Dagger of Derenar and the Caller of Gwarái". He is a man that always has a plan. He finds himself in exile. His hope of reclaiming glory is in the hands of self-proclaimed emperor and unearthly powers.
It is a story of war, chaos, drama, suspense, thrill, etc. The twists and turns in the story makes it more interesting. The glossary given at the end of the book was really helpful. The story however felt a little stretched. The map given at the beginning will give you the idea of the places that are there in the story.
I recommend fantasy lovers to pick this pick. It will amaze you undoubtedly.
Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for Thornton and Rathma, and the whole clashing cast, guess again!
The struggle for power, the war for a deep pit in a mountain, the scourge that lives in the depths, waiting to spread across the lands with the goal of wiping out every human, Athrani, and even the Kyth. The greed for power, no matter the cost, drives the story relentlessly forward. Break gods out of their restraints? What could go wrong?
This story will have you wondering how much more your emotional well being can take! I really had to put it down and take a deep breath a few times, because of the crazy twists and turns the plot took!
Please read this book, so I can commiserate with someone!! Plus, it’s a great series! Now, to go torture myself with book three, Days Of The Dark…
Such a fitting follow-up to Gift of the Shaper! The epic-ness gets very much more epic both when it comes to landscape, characters and mythical creatures, religions and cult as well as storyline.
A lot happens right at the beginning and lots of new characters are introduced, POV change all the time and even timelines change without explaining how they all fit together. But the last 100 pages really brings everything together.
Thornton, the main character, gets a lot of interesting character development which puts him on an uncertain journey between good and evil.
I really enjoyed Gift of the Shaper, so I was looking forward to this book. Honestly, it was hard work to even finish this one. Practically every page was a different POV, so you don't really have time to get into their storyline. It was like when you're trying to watch TV and someone keeps changing the channel. I found myself skimming through a lot. Because the action was so broken up, it wasn't very exciting. At the end of the book I was wondering how I got there and what was the point. I'm not sure I'll read the next one.
Awaken the Three was a great read that started out slowly, building the world, characters, and setting the stage for a multi-pronged climax that left me wanting more. Jenning's masterfully shrouded the story with enough mystery within the world and characters alike to keep the pages turning. I felt like any plot twists were foreshadowed enough, but not so obvious as to how they would turn out. I'm just a little sad I have to wait 6 months to get the third book added to my library...I can't wait!
What a journey and we're not even done yet! We got introduced to so many great new characters, alongside the ones we fell in love with in the first. Many of these characters are some badass women with fierce personalities. Book 2 was so well-paced and had plenty of action, it easily kept my attention as we prepare for book 3. There were several plot twists I did not see coming. I can not wait to see all these journeys come together in the next book.
Awaken the Three is perfect for lovers of epic fantasy. If you're a fan of The Lord of the the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit you'll absolutely love this book. I do highly recommend reading book one as well, but it's not necessary to enjoy reading this. A rich world, vibrant characters, and a well paced story that will have you turning pages cover to cover. Don't pass this one by.
A wonderful follow up to the first novel in this trilogy! The pacing was such that I found myself wanting to speed read so I could hurry up and find out what was going to happen.
I continue to enjoy the multiple POVs from the varied cast of characters. Jennings brings more lore and myth into this interesting world he made.
My mind is still spinning so here are my pinball thoughts: - The entire book you feel things building then the last 150 pages are a riiiiiiide. - I only read this after work and finished this in 2 days. I am not a fast reader. - The Kienari never fail to be the coolest. - Would love to know more about the Lonely Guard. - Here for switching POVs during the battle scenes, makes it more immersive. - Also, enjoyed the times characters found similarities with people from different cultures they thought were so odd or even enemies. - It has been a few months since I read Gift of the Shaper and there are some new characters in this one so I was clinging to the Glossary for a bit. Cue the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Charlie meme. IYKYK
Jennings writes a thorough fantasy that pulls you into the book immediately. The creatures are complex and well developed. I enjoyed the book and look forward to next in series.
