How important is the unlife of a single vampire in the secret war that rages in the Final Nights? That's what Michael Luther asks himself when his beloved childe dies. What good is fighting a war when the things you love will inevitably be ripped away? What good is obedience to the Traditions when the Kindred in power don't care if you survive or perish? What reward is there in continuing to exist when all that made you human is dead?
As Michael investigates the circumstances of his childe's death and gets drawn into the web of deception and treachery that brought it about, he discovers the answers to these questions. And he discovers that the strongest passion to live on after death is the thirst for vengeance.
Predator & Vampire is the first in a series of six books that examine the hunters newly arrived in the World of Darkness and the supernatural foes they have been created to destroy. In the course of the series, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur. The series continues with Predator & Judge.
This is one I wish I could rate a higher 3 or something because it's only just a 4 if I'm in a good mood. Most of the Vampire the Masquerade novels are heavy on intrigues. This one, in particular, is basically all intrigue BUT I have to say it's the best of all the VtM novels I've read in that regard. The various plot details are woven together very well. Though the main character is, at times, annoyingly uncertain of himself he's developed sufficienly. Technically this is part of the Predator & Prey combo series that mixes other componentsof the World of Darkness. This first book has the most vampire action of all of them and can be read as a standalone without concerning yourself with the others.
My biggest issue with this book is that I dislike the main character. I found him whiny and dull. I liked most of the side characters, though, so that was fun. Not all of them get a happy ending, but it is the world of darkness, so I didn't particularly expect a satisfying ending, in that sense. I wonder if any of these characters will show up in the rest of the Predator & Prey series, or if they're all just so self-contained that this is the end of the survivors' stories.
I'm not a big fan of how ... transparent (?) the powers one gets as a player character are here, but *shrug* I'm not sure how else one would describe them, I suppose.

It was a bit boring at the start but I ended up enjoying it. The bad thing is that I ran a search on the other books of the series and the characters I was interested in don't show up again :(
One of the best Vampire (White Wolf) novels I've read... Great political intrigue and backstabbing. A good look at a character's descent from humanity as well.
