This is fast becoming the best entry in the ‘cool girl with a guy’ sweepstakes, for my money. Not only is it rather effortlessly charming, but it continues to make Yutaka’s generic nice guy act part of the narrative.
There’s definitely a lot more mythfolk focus this time, but Yutaka comes into his own towards the end when he proves to be both a good ally and really dedicated to finding himself. Sure, he could be more, but it’s enough.
This is so stinking cute at times that it feels like it’s getting away with something. Between Tsumiki being amazing and cool, to new characters such as a competitive fish person and a unicorn who is decidedly selling herself, this is adorable.
As I said before, I can tell the author is thinking about the actual challenges or accommodations that the mythfolk. I loved the introduction of the hyper-competent yet easily flustered Hebizono, a gorgon who initiates the first arc of the volume.
How does a gorgon go to school? How does Senga, our lothario vampire, get blood when he barely gets an allowance from a blood bank (and what about the people who, you know, need blood?)? All explained and then some. The lore is half the fun.
The rest of it is… also fun. Tsumiki continues to be just so straightforward and loyal, and I love how she’s noticing the things that Yutaka does, as do his classmates. There’s something more when we’re shown he’s a nice guy rather than told it.
We’re definitely moving on to the burgeoning feelings portion of our program, to the dismay of Tsumiki’s adoring fans, which caused me no end of amusement. That school rumour causes an above average amount of chaos while Tsumiki and Yutaka remain utterly oblivious.
One other part I will also throw out there is Senga’s slowly blossoming friendship with Yutaka. Seemingly a less important character in the opening volume, he turns out to be a lot more complicated than his smug personality and ladies man nature suggests.
This just has so much going for it. It’s smart, has fun art, strong characters, and uses its setting for more than just window dressing. It’s definitely in its genre, but it remembers to try hard and exceeds expectations many times over.
4.5 stars - same as the last volume; I’m waiting for the truly exceptional volume to come and nudge that score up the last little bit, but this is such a great story. Look, snake warmers exist and they sum up everything this does well. Trust me.
Thanks so much to Viz for the DRC! I've been stalking the app and waiting for earlier chapters to get backfilled so I'm happy to see the second volume is already about to release.
I really didn't know what I expected when I realized mythfolk were integrated with human students at school but this story is proving to be very heartwarming. I love the fascination the students have for one another and how they're willing to band together to compete in fairness.
I can't wait for the next volume. Seeing Tsumiki call out Yutaka and also reassure him was cute. Will be be getting a romance arc??
Great follow-up! I'd started feeling like we'd left behind some of the characters we'd been getting to know in the first volume, but then they turned up pretty strong after all. I love learning about all the different myths lore and the series is more of a supernatural high school slice of life which is a very cozy style. The sports festival arc did a great job of introducing new characters and bringing back older ones, and I'm intrigued about the childhood friend who pops up. It's a very relaxing series so far.
This was just as cute as the first volume! I really loved the interactions between Tsumiki and the rest of her class, but especially between her and Yutaka. In this volume, it was nice to see their relationship develop further, as well as get some more perspective on her feelings for him. I really love the slice-of-life meets monsters plot of this, and am looking forward to continuing to read it. A lighthearted, fun read! Thanks to Viz and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Yutaka and Tsumiki and their classmates have their own issues. Between dealing with stealing crows, downpours of rain leading to colds, medusa snakes, and the Spring Sports Festival with weird events such as a three-way tug-of-war and a relay race gone awry, everyone manages to get along. A nice satisfying read.
Thanks Netgalley and Viz Media for the chance to read this title!
Field Day at the school spotlights Tsumiki's athletic prowess (and big big heart), introduces new characters including a mild mannered medusa and a unicorn girl whose snark is as sharp as her horn, and adds to the intrigue around Yutaka's old life. I'm really enjoying the mellow vibe and 'creature comforts' of this not-so-ordinary series. Can't wait for volume 3!
Very fun. I like how different characters’ mythfolk traits tie into stuff that happens, whether they be main characters or side characters. Need more Tsumiki and Yutaka moments ASAP, they’re too cute fr. Plus, I really like the Medusa mythfolk girl that was introduced in this volume.
I'm really enjoying reading this series. I love the mythological humans and loved that there was a kind of festival in this volume! The artwork is amazing. I can't wait to read more.
