Mage Bride

Rate this book
She’s a powerful mage. He’s a hardened warrior. It will take them both to slay a monster.

Phera is a protector. As one of the water mages from the esteemed Academy of Mages who maintains law and order, she’s known for being clever and resourceful, if a touch overzealous. But faced with a deadly foe, Phera makes a costly mistake. Blood magic is forbidden, no matter the outcome. She’s brought to trial and offered a give up magic or venture into the perilous lands of the ice warriors to aid them on a quest.

Without hesitation, she chooses the quest, only to discover she’s not meant to act as merely a protector.

She’s intended to be an ice lord’s bride.

The last thing Lord Rhyme wants is a bride, and certainly not a treacherous mage. There’s a reason they were outlawed from the ice lands, after all. But Rhyme has a demon to fight. The women of his clan have gone missing, and it appears the only way to win them back is by offering a a mage bride.

Rhyme wants no part of the deception. But he can’t turn his back on his clan.

Burdened with secrets and their mutual distrust, Phera and Rhyme must put aside their differences—and their budding attraction toward one another—to find the missing women.

The truth they uncover is far darker than either could have imagined.

This standalone romantasy is perfect for readers in search of a fast-paced, epic adventure with swoony romance, intriguing mystery, loyal friendships and unique magic.

❄️🦬 ARC REVIEW: Mage Bride by Angela J. Ford 🦬❄️

⭐️ 3.25
🌶 1.5

So much potential, but this story didn't quite stick the landing for me. Don't get me wrong, Mage Bride was a fun and easy read, but it could have been so much more.

The world building and intercontinental politics between the mages and the ice lords were the strongest elements, but even they could have been fleshed out more. The ARC copy would have definitely also benefited from a map, so I hope that one is included in the published copy.

Ultimately, this story felt like it wanted to be an epic romantic fantasy, but it lacked the length and detail to be one. At barely over 200 pages long, Mage Bride should have definitely been longer, imo.

The length also created a rushed pacing issue, which left me unable to emotionally connect with both the characters and the storyline on multiple occasions.

This left the primary romance lacking depth and intensity to me. While the foundation for an intense, slowburn romance was present, it didn't really manifest into one by the end. The reliance on the miscommunication trope definitely left the romance feeling flat at times.

Another issue was the lack of details during explanations of the magic system, both in general and specifically for individual mages with different powers. It didn't feel fully resolved to me.

I did have fun reading about the cute yaks (especially sweet Rosie). There were also intense, near-death moments and battle scenes that really stood out. Those scenes were very well done and detailed, which helped to highlight the shortcomings of other passages. They hooked me in and made my heart race, showing that the author is capable of writing at a higher calibre.

If you're after a quick, easy palate-cleanser romantasy read, this book could be for you. I had higher hopes and expectations though, especially after reading the author's promotion for the ARC. It was still a good read by the end.

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this book -

This book drew me in immediately, we meet Phera, imprisoned, shackled without her magic and my first reaction is exactly what did this beautiful mage do to deserve this? Of course, I had to find out and the author spills the tea in the best way possible. Angela J Ford keeps you hooked, and I immediately fell in love with Phera. She is fierce, strong, determined and will absolutely fight for what she believes in.

The storyline follows Phera, as she is sent to distant lands, betrothed to an ice warrior she knows nothing about, and really has to determine who is on her side, who is going to betray her and ultimately, can she trust anyone in this new land? The intrigue grows, the twists, a betrayal revealed, this is no easy life that Phera has found herself in…and she has a mystery to solve!

This is an action packed romantasy with a smart and sassy female main character who will have you rooting for her from the first few pages. Angela J Ford’s writing here is fun, easy on the eyes and will have turning page after page until you find all the answers in this mysterious world. I would have taken a whole series on Phera, but her story is ultimately short yet action packed with adventure, mystery, finding love and for those of you who like your books cleaner, the spice is fade to black rather than full on – which actually suits the style of writing and story in itself.

Summary:
One mistake cost Phera her freedom. Caring determined resourceful. Using blood magic is explicitly forbidden whether used for good or the good of others. She is now on trial for her misuse of magic and has to make a grueling choice, give up her magic or travel to the land of the Ice Warriors and aid them in a task of life or death.
Choosing the ice warrior task without hesitating she soon realizes that the task was her life or death as she is to be a bride for the ice lord Rhyme.

Distraught and feeling trapped Phera learns of missing women and is taksed with finding them. Thinking if she can do so quickly she may be able to get out of this arrangement.
Phera and Rhyme must put aside their differences and they’re growing attraction to one another to find the missing women uncovered the truth, but it is far darker than either of them ever could have imagined.

Thoughts:
What a thrilling ride I thought this was going to be more of a full on romance with a rebel kind of story, but this was more thriller mystery with romance, kinda in the background where they were thrust into a situation and had to kind of figure it out and endure for the good of all people on either side you know. Phera is a bad ass she thought she was doing the right thing using her magic and she accidentally tapped into the dark side, but is it so dark if she’s using magic for the greater good I don’t know. It was kind of a hard play this time because she doesn’t wanna be swallowed up by the darkness, but also wasn’t using her magic for the light. It was these types of questions that made the story so intriguing to me. The way the mystery of this book unfold is so good. It doesn’t drag on or take too long but it kind of drops little Easter eggs as you go and I found that really really fun and kept me enthralled because I just couldn’t wait to find out what was next. Couldn’t wait to see who done it and why.

But if you are interested in a fantasy sort of thriller romance, check this one out the mage bride by Angela Jay Ford coming June 11.

A standalone low spice fantasy romance to binge in one sitting! I’ve read multiple of Angela’s books and I just love her writing style! 😍

The plot is focused on the mystery behind the disappearances and the monster, which for me was the most compelling part of the story! I for one couldn’t put down the book until I found out what was going on! Phera is relentless in her search for the truth and I was happy that her best friend was there with her to support her. The author leaves little hints throughout the story about the bigger evil that is at work, and when everything is revealed I was excited 😱!

What also loved about this book is that the characters are flawed. Phera is a criminal, she has used blood magic which is strictly forbidden. While that, Rhyme, the ice lord she is arranged to marry, has his own dark secrets. The romance was reluctant at first, as both of them aren’t sure if they can’t trust the other. I would have liked a tad more chemistry from them, but even so I loved them and how protective he becomes of her by the end 🥹

~ STORY & PLOT 📝 ~

This was an easy read but it lacked the complexity necessary to make it a really good story for me. The plot was going so fast, some things were never properly explained nor did they have the opportunity to gain the level of angst I needed.

The world-building is nice and the history between the mage and the ice warrior is very cool but, yeah I would've liked more.

Still, the story was cool and entertaining for sure.

The romance tho, I didn't feel at all. Rhyme has like 3 chapters where it's his POV and seriously I felt like they barely even interacted together (in a meaningful way at least) so I didn't understand why they were so enthralled and forgiving with each other. I half expected a "fated mate" trope to enter the chat and explain it, but no.

I felt like the characters didn't have enough place to grow and feel truly 3 dimensional.

This is an arc review. Thanks to the author for the advanced ebook copy 🙏💖

The feeling when you start a book and it’s so good that you have to force yourself to stop.

MAGE BRIDE is a beautiful Romantasy standalone that starts off really strong as Phera, a mage, is to be punished for practicing blood magic BUT she has a choice: her punishment can either be ten years in the dungeons or ten years serving the reclusive Ice Lords of the North. She chooses the Ice Lords, only later to find out that there’s a catch—she has to marry one of them.

I started the book in the morning, and a few hours later I couldn’t bring myself to stop. I finished this in a matter of days because I was that intrigued by the whole story and the mystery surrounding the apparently magical disappearances of the women in the North, which Phera is trying to solve together with her new husband, Lord Rhyme. I really enjoyed Phera as a main character and I also loved her friendship with Lessie, so strong that the woman left her post and decided to go to the far Nord as well.

As for the romance, I loved Rhyme, but ironically it’s the part that I ended up caring for the least when all was done. The potential is all there, and I really enjoyed the two together, but I think their relationship would have benefitted from a longer book, that way there could have been more development between the two. A longer book would have also allowed us to see Phera discovering things that would have made the finale and uncovering of the mystery even more impactful.

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.

ARC Review of Mage Bride by Angela J. Ford, releasing June 11th. I received a free ARC copy of this book for an honest review.

“She’s a powerful mage. He’s a hardened warrior. It will take them both to slay a monster.”

Tropes include:
Arranged/forced marriage
Murder mystery
Slow burn romance
Water magic
Viking vibes

I was immediately captivated by this story. The FMC is imprisoned with her magic subdued. She is given a choice between going to the dungeons or going to an ice clan and being married off to an ice lord. She chooses to go and marry the ice lord for those of you who love arranged marriage and forced proximity tropes and don’t forget the hints of betrayal mixed in! There’s action, romance and battles. Everything you need for a romantasy!

The story was told partially in dual pov, though I would have loved to get more of Rhyme’s POV.

I definitely found myself rooting for the characters and thoroughly enjoyed the book. The magic system and world building were easy to follow and engaging. If you enjoy romantasy with the aforementioned tropes then this is a book for you! I would love more. This will be a part of a series of standalone Betrayed Brides stories. I’m definitely looking forward to the next installment! Thank you, Angela, for this wonderful book!

Thank you for the ARC!
If you are looking for a fast pace, quick read, then look no more! In 200 pages you get magic, romance, adventure, mystery, monsters, and a lovely yak named Rosie!

This book definitely is a good one to pull you out of a reading slump. While I was kind of able to start putting together some of the mystery, I was still able to be surprised by some of it as well which I love. The spice is non descriptive so if you are looking for something tame in that department then this is perfect for you.

This is a dual POV with our main characters Phera and Rhyme, though it’s mostly Phera’s POV. Which makes me want more of Rhyme but I don’t feel like I missed too much. I love Phera as a character. She is very strong willed and compassionate. Rhyme is definitely the tall dark broody warrior type. Very stoic. But I enjoyed seeing a “softer” side of him with Phera.

The series is called Betrayed Brides so yup that sure did happen. I won’t spoil it obviously but wow. WOW. This was not what I expected at all. It’s not your typical wife betrayal that’s all I’ll say!

Overall I really enjoyed reading this. It’s a nice standalone in a series that I can’t wait to get more of. If you want to feel nice and cool during the hot summer then you should pick this up and transport yourself to a snowy mountain for a while.

This book hooked me in from the very beginning which I loveeeed. I found the plot and Phera’s story to be extremely intriguing! 💙 I found myself rooting for her throughout the entire novella and I enjoyed her relationship with the MMC, Rhyme, developed!! I wish we had gotten a bit more moments from his perspective and about the ending but aside from that this is an amazing, short and sweet, standalone fantasy novella that I enjoy and would recommend if any of these tropes or your usual cup of tea! You’re amazing @angelajfordbooks ❄️✨🖤 and I’m so happy to have gotten the opportunity to be on your ARC team. I loved your characters and how the magic and corruption worked in their world!! I honestly can’t wait for the next stand alone novel in this series the Pirate Bride coming ✨ Summer 2025 ✨ Thank you for reading this review and please remember the official release of this great book is June 11th, 2024 !!! It will be available on kindle and in paperback and hardcover.

This is my first read from Angela J. Ford, I really enjoyed this, and thank you for the ARC!

Though magic has been banned in the ice lands for hundreds of years, the mages are called upon to help solve a mystery.

Phera, is a water mage sentenced to ten years in the ice lands for a crime she committed against magic. Rhyme is the ice lord, who she later learns is her betrothed.

Both Phera and Rhyme are hiding secrets from each other, all while fighting their growing attraction to each other and trying to discover the mounting danger. They have to put aside the ancient distrust between their two peoples and come together.

I absolutely loved the world-building, the characters, and the underlying plot of the story.

I liked it so much I wish it had been longer. But I cannot wait for future books in this series and to read more from Angela’s backlist!

If you're looking for a no spice romantasy with a strong mystery plot, then you've found it!

Mage Bride is a romantasy standalone where the protagonist, Phera, is a water mage faced with a choice: give up her magic as punishment for having used forbidden dark magic, or accept to go the the untamed nothern lands--a post that no mage covets. Phera chooses the latter, not knowing that she's being tricked into a marriage with one of the northern warriors. Now, together with her new husband, Phera must solve the mystery of the disappearances of some of the clan women while also battling her growing feelings for her husband and trying to discover the secrets he hides.

Despite being a short book (200 pages), Mage Bride has all the components of a successful fantasy novel: it's action packed, the mystery is fleshed out and compelling, and the characters are all intriguing in their own right. I especially loved the women of this novel, Phera and her best friend Lessie, who sacrifices everything to stay by her friend's side.

As far as the romance goes, I very much enjoyed Phera and Rhyme. The man is frustrating with his secrets and his attempts to keep Phera at bay, but this only made him more fascinating. They had a great chemistry, and I loved the sweetness of their bond, as opposed to the all-consuming lust and passion that is often found in romantasy titles. However, I do think the romance would have benefitted from an extra 100 pages to give the relationship more space to develop.

Thank you to the author for gifting me a e-copy for review. Opinions are my own.

“This is supposed to be my punishment, and a punishment it is. A husband who betrays me, who can barely look at me, who can't wait to fake my death. A people who have plans to kill me. My best friend is dying, and I'm homeless and alone surrounded by treachery."
—Phera

“Time matters not if the heart hasn't changed."
—the seer

What was it about loss that made one realize what they actually had all along, yet never had been thankful for?
—Rhyme

I like the idea behind this story, but the delivery is poorly executed. The characters are all flat and mostly one-dimensional, the relationships are weak, the main character is initially intriguing but quickly becomes boring once she is instantly physically attracted to the MMC, the villain is underwhelming and lacks clear motivation, the romance attraction is instant and empty, the pacing is fast but uneven, and there are many plot holes and unexplained situations. As far as short YA books go, this isn't too bad, but it's nothing memorable either. 2.5⭐️

Angela's novel, Mage Bride, follows Phera, who is on trial for using forbidden magic and is sentenced to an arranged marriage with an ice lord from the north. The story features formidable foes, exhilarating battles featuring use of magic, and beautiful closed-door romance scenes. Despite its fast pace, Angela's writing ensures the narrative never feels rushed. The well-developed characters, rich themes of power and love, and vivid world-building make this a captivating read.

*Arranged Marriage
*slow burn, closed door romance
*notes of possible and failed attempt of SA by monster antagonist, not the MLC.
The attack seems relevant to the story as the protagonist is portrayed as a sacrificial Bride for the antagonist.

I received this novel as a free ARC and I'm leaving my honest review.

I really liked the concept of this book. I loved the unique flying creatures and the use of yaks in the story. I thought the magic concept and mage related politics were intriguing. I liked the ice clan's politics and the mage bride necessity in a culture that despises magic. There was some interesting history with that which I liked.

Where this book really shined for me was in the action and thrilling scenes. Those were really well done.

For me, the romance felt a lot closer to the romance in The Courtship of Princess Leia (which I realize is very niche), but what I mean by that is that there are short interactions, forced proximity, and BOOM they are in love. They are in attraction, sure. They are learning about each other and their individual cultures and backgrounds, definitely. He rescues her after she rescues herself, marvelous. He tries to protect her from schemes, love that. But romantic relationship? I see more of a foundation for future romance.

I would have enjoyed this as a duology where the second book had more emphasis on their romantic relationship progression or just as a longer book so there was more room to flesh out their relationship.

Content: attempted (thwarted) r*pe by monster, n*ked and tortured women, blo*d magic, mostly closed door s*x (vague and short description of lead up or what happens in like a couple sentences about the what without specific details of the how, if that makes sense?)

Thank you to the author for the advanced reader copy of this book. This review is voluntarily written and the thoughts and opinions contained in this review are my own.

I was sent an ARC!

I was super excited to read this! Magic, sexy viking like men, forced marriage! Forced proximity. Perfect 👌 🤣

This was a really sweet romance 😍 its a really quick read. One of those goes to a cute cabin and sips your coffee while reading outside type of story.

I loved the dynamic between the characters. This is a slow burn 🔥 no insta love. The magic system is familiar and kinda reminds me of Stolen Ice Bride!

My only problem with this story was it just wasn't long enough! I wanted more worldbuilding and more growth, but it's still a perfect short story!

I loved this book. I was not expecting the story to go where it went, but it feels like Phera And Rhyme did the work of being honest with each other and trusting each other. Phera also learned to trust herself and her abilities more as well. I loved the character growth and world-building. I am secretly hoping for Lessie's story as well. Lessie was the ultimate best friend, I was glad she also seemed to find happiness.

I had been anticipating this book for awhile, and it did not disappoint.
I like Angela's writing style, and this book was no different. I was instantly pulled into the world and read until I finished the book in one sitting.
I was not expecting the adventure aspect of this book, but really enjoyed how important it was to the plot.
Also, I have to mention that I really like how important friendship was throughout the whole story. Some of the author's other books didn't have any, but I think that it added more depth.

4 Stars

Content: violence, fade-to-black between married couple (see the author's website for more details), no language

Phera….GIRL…I always knew you had it in youuuuuu.

This book was a pretty quick read and since it was shorter, the pace of the story was fast, which I love as a reset after reading a long epic fantasy.

Angela……I knew what you did there with the Ice Lords and Phera being a WATER mage who can CREATE ICE. No better connection than that 👏🏼

Now now now…..the Academy of Mages has some ‘splaininnnnn to do 👊🏼. Time to protest those losers like they’re serving Starbucks drinks. 🥤

I love when fantasy stories have mysteries in them also and this book gave just that. I wouldn’t say it’s the most complex story I’ve ever read but it was fun and exciting and I enjoyed it fully.
Can’t wait to hear the other stories of mage brides who find themselves even through betrayal and banishment.

There was a decent story and somewhat unexpected twist, but it read like an outline to a book. If the character relationships were more evolved and the MMC's personality more flushed out it could have been more compelling but it's hard to feel for characters without much dialogue.

Angela J. Ford is an incredible author with the ability to really paint a picture with her words. I was transported to Phera’s world, immersed in a story with magic, mystery, and raw beauty. You will find yourself invested in the characters Phera and Lessie, and their profound friendship, rooting for them, and devouring this story to uncover the truth with them. This book read like a fairytale for adults with enchanting prose, action, romance, and secrets to be uncovered. Cannot WAIT for the next one!
Would definitely recommend for fans of Throne of Glass.

This book needed to be longer.

This felt like a condensed version of an epic tale and there were moments that felt really abrupt. The story needed a prologue to better understand the universe, the motives, & the history of the Mages and the Ice Lords. It would’ve helped world building and character development. I think experiencing the events that lead to the main characters coming together would have created a connection to the characters. The main characters could have died and it wouldn’t have bothered me because I never felt a connection. Also this is not a spicy 🌶️ book for those that are looking for spice. I received the hardcover version of the book and it is beautiful. Overall it’s a nice story but it really needed to be longer instead of skipping over the details in my opinion.

“Phera, you should know, I want you to stay.”

Thank you to Angela J Ford for my complimentary ARC of Mage Bride in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first book by this author and now I can’t wait to read all of her work! Mage Bride is a short (~200 pages) book that packs all the punch of a lengthier fantasy novel.

This book is smart, enjoyable, and clearly a great start to Ford’s series of standalones. It has a ton to offer in addition to feel-good romance—intriguing mystery, solid worldbuilding, fast-paced adventure, alluring magic, and a sprinkle of spicy tension. It’s also important for the romantasy genre as we typically see a lot of relationships of mixed magical races, but reality-based interracial ones are largely missing—until now. It’s refreshing to see a Black woman and a white man take center stage in such a riveting setting. We need more of this representation!

“Now that I was free, I’d do everything in my power to ensure magic never got taken away from me again.”

Phera has all the makings of the fantasy romance FMCs we all know and love. What makes her stand out is her unwavering sense of logic and confidence in her magical abilities no matter what is happening, and despite the way she was treated in the past. I liked her much more than her best friend, Lessie, who is like a sister to her. They make a great team, but Phera is strong and brave, both with Lessie and on her own.

Rhyme, the MMC, came from a rough northern people and was raised a warrior. Contrary to his appearance, he’s a reserved, intelligent, and kind man. Like Jon Snow after he befriended the Wildlings.

“I vow to be honest with you, to honor and respect you, and to protect you from the suspicions my people carry.”

One of my favorite things about Phera and Rhyme is how genuinely they give one another an honest chance. Amidst major strife between their peoples—mages and ice lords—built on assumptions and warped historical narratives, they decide to trust each other and see where it leads. They form their own opinions and their love only grows as a result.

The dual POV is also really effective. Whereas most stories switch back and forth every chapter, Ford strategically makes readers wait for the second person’s voice (this is a spoiler-free review, so I can’t tell you who or when!). I actually forgot it was a dual POV story for a bit, so this was a nice surprise.

I can’t wait to read Mage Bride again and for my exclusive hardcover edition to arrive after release day tomorrow, June 11! Use code NBULMAN913 to get 15% off on yours!

Small Business BookTok ARC Reviews: “Mage Bride” by Angela J. Ford

Note: This ARC was given to me for free by the author and I am reviewing this book voluntarily.

After being detained for using forbidden magic in the name of justice, Phera is given an ultimatum by the Council of Mages: Serve ten years in prison or serve ten years working with the mysterious Ice Lords who roam unknown lands. When Phera discovers that she’s also secretly being married off to Lord Rhyme, one of the resident Ice Lords, Phera feels the need to take caution and question this arrangement. As a mystery involving strange disappearances comes to light, Phera and Rhythm must put aside their tensions and uncertainty in order to work together and find the missing residents!

From the fantasy author that brought you nine years of Epic Fantasy and Fantasy Romance works such as “The Chronicles of the Four Worlds”, “Gods and Goddesses of Labraid”, “Tales of the Enchanted Wildwood” and the “Tower Knights” series, Angela J. Ford delivers once again with this first installment in her new series “Betrayed Brides”. Like her previous stories, Mrs. Ford does an excellent job of creating and expanding her Fantasy world-building, creating immersive and captivating landscapes, societal structures, and lore inspired by Celtic Folklore. The concept of Elemental Mages made me feel quite nostalgic as a reader as the incorporation and execution of said magic felt reminiscent of the classic animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. The tension and build up in chemistry between Phera and Rhyme made for quite the entertaining read with a grounded message in learning from the destruction and division of the past in order to build a united future built on love and avoiding past repetition. The twists and turns that readers will face throughout the narrative also promise page-turning suspense and an unraveling of secrets! Want to dive into one of many exciting worlds that make up the Fordiverse? Then don’t miss out on this book when it hits online and in-store shelves on June 11, 2024!

Mage Bride was one mysterious and ever twisting story of strange events and unexpected circumstances!

Phera has always wanted to be a mage, ever since she felt the awaking of magic in her blood and felt it’s pull. Unfortunately some crimes cannot be forgive, at least in the southern lands, and so she soon finds herself with only two choices.

1) Spend the rest of her life magicless and trapped in a dark, dank, and lonely dungeon cell
—OR—
2) answer the unexpected and strange request of the deadly northern ice lords for ten years

It really doesn’t seem like a decision at all. At least in the north her magic may be at her fingertips, despite the dangers and fears of ice warriors that no one has associated with in living memory.

Thankfully…and regrettably…Phera’s best friend and fellow mage Lessie has volunteered as the second mage requested. But neither girl could ever be prepared for the truth of their duty.

This story was filled with two unsuspecting mages promised as mage brides, ancient beliefs, mysterious disappearances, deadly secrets, crazy cool creatures, betrayal, romance, and discovering and trusting one’s own self, as well as, those around you.

This was such a unique and intriguing story! I absolutely loved the mysteriousness of it!!! That first chapter was oh so enticing and begged me to read more! I loved Phera and Lessie, who were thrown it such a crazy and unpredictable situation! And Rhyme is such a strange and intriguing character. He seemed to have two sides and one was never certain which one Phera would get. The whole situation had a whole air of uncertainty and confusion about it.

I do wish there had been a bit more romance. Just a smidge…I mean…I am a sucker for allllll the swoon. And the romance wasn’t as pronounced or as spicy as I normally anticipate with Ford’s stories, but with the nature of the story I definitely can understand why the romance was lite in this one. So that is a very very small complaint.

The mystery and danger were absolute perfection. And I really did NOT expect that climax!

So yep…If you enjoy a story with a plethora of mystery, a whole lot of danger, lots of secrets and unexpected revelations, lite romance, crazy cool creatures, a relatable heroine promised to a hot and cold warrior, you just need to read Mage Bride!

I always enjoy Ms. Ford's style of writing and this book is nothing less, it is full of fantasy, romance and most especially mystery so it kept me riveted till the last line. Phera is a powerful mage who takes her role very seriously, however when faced with a monster she knew she had to get rid of, she resorts to using dark magic. Magic that was forbidden by the academy of mages and she was caught and imprisoned. She risked losing everything she had worked for, having her magic taken from her and spending the rest of her life in the dungeons, however she was offered an alternative. She was to be sent to the North of Ethunia to the mountains where the ice lords ruled and where magic was forbidden. Seems like the lords needed the mages help and had requested mages be sent immediately on a matter of life and death, and she was offered this reprieve. Her friend Lessie volunteered to join her on this dangerous journey into the unknown and wild lands. Once they arrived they found out there was more to their being there, they were to be mage brides and still there were other more sinister secrets. Phera felt betrayed by her husband at first, but she knew that no matter what she would do all she could to rid the clan of the monster abducting their women, and for this her magic would not be enough, she needed the love of her magicless husband who was a great warrior. Together they would save their clan. I loved this powerful book so much I read it all in one sitting, the characters are courageous and the romance is powerful as is the bond between warrior and mage! This book reminded me of the books by Hollee Mands, Warriors of the Five Realms.

"It was easier to speak of monsters and clues, suspicions and danger, than to discuss matters of the heart."

A Dark Mystery,
Brings together sworn enemies,
Can they overcome a past of hatred and death,
To forge a future of love and trust,
Or will all be lost?

Mage Bride was a fun unique read for me. I enjoyed the world building in this one and how mages were not all powerful just because they had magic. I really liked how the main couple a mage and non-mage became their strongest once they truly joined together, not just through marriage but in trust and love.

There were wonderful themes of trust, honesty, friendship, and goodness throughout the story. The romance and action were overall well balanced. There were only a few times I was pulled from the story but that may be more personal preference than anything.

I would recommend this one for anyone who enjoys fantasy, arranged marriage, enemies to lovers, and light conquering darkness!

Content Rating: There is a short non descriptive intimate scene between a married couple, which was written I thought quite respectfully. It can be easily avoided, but it is good to be aware. There is violence and no language. Overall, I would give this book a PG-13 rating, but probably would recommend for 16+ to read.

Happy Reading, Friends!😁

Thank you to the author for the ARC!

Mage Bride is about Phera, a mage, who commits a crime and is given the choice of giving up her magic or going to assist the ice warriors with an issue they need help with. She decides to assist the ice warriors and finds out that she is not only there to help, she is meant to marry Rhyme, an ice lord. Hello arranged marriage and some forced proximity. Always a favorite!

This was my first book by Angela and it won’t be my last! I thought Mage Bride was a fun read and I loved that it is a standalone romantasy.

The world building was interesting and easy to follow. The magic systems were explained well. The impact of the marriage on both Phera and Rhyme was fun to watch unfold.

One aspect that was fascinating was all of the history between mages and the ice warriors. I wish the book would have been longer so we could have gotten even more backstory!

There was quite a bit of betrayal and deception that had me gasping and kept me engaged. Once I got into the story, I didn’t want to put it down!

I thought the chemistry between Phera and Rhyme was pretty good, considering they didn’t get much time together before they were married.

If you want a quick, standalone romantasty with an arranged marriage, forced proximity, with a dash of betrayal, Mage Bride is for you!

I absolutely adored this sweet fantasy romance standalone! In this captivating standalone novel, author Angela J. Ford invites readers on a journey filled with magic, adventure, and the power of love.

At the heart of the story are two compelling characters: Phera, a fiercely independent water mage from the prestigious Academy of Mages, and Lord Rhyme, a hardened warrior of the ice lands. When fate intertwines their destinies in unexpected ways, they must confront their differences and work together to overcome a formidable enemy.

But it's the electrifying chemistry between Phera and Rhyme that truly steals the show. Their relationship unfolds with a tantalizing blend of tension and tenderness, as they navigate the complexities of duty, deception, and desire. As they embark on their quest to rescue the missing women of Rhyme's clan, they discover that their fates are more intertwined than they ever imagined.

With its fast-paced plot, intriguing mystery, and swoon-worthy romance, 'Mage Bride' is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy and steamy romance alike. Whether you're drawn to the allure of magic or the thrill of adventure, this spellbinding novel is sure to leave you craving more.

Phera has gotten herself in some serious trouble and faces imprisonment and the loss of her magic because of it. On the day of her trial though she’s offered an opportunity to instead of spends 10 years locked away or go to the north and assist the reclusive people there with a problem that requires mages. If she can keep her magic it can’t be too bad right? Little does she knew when she agrees is that this alliance requires marriage to one of the ice lords. Arriving at her new home with her best friend in tow she finds that the problem there is a bit of a mystery. People, mostly women, have been going missing and all that’s left behind is some kind of weird ruin. Her job is to help figure out who or what is taking these people and put a stop to it with the help of her new husband Rhyme.

But naturally not all is what it seems in the north or within her new clan. Even her husband might not be 100% honest with her but she also has secrets. And the real problems going on might be bigger than originally anticipated...

It was an interesting story though it did kind of feel like there should just be more to it... maybe more story more world building I don’t know it just needed more still enjoyable.
