I was excited to read this book. What fun to read about all the classic monsters in a battle against good and evil. The story had Dracula, Phantom of the Opera, Creature of the Black Lagoon, mummies, witches and a whole lot more. The story was adventurous and fun. It had some wit and even some unexpected brutal moments. The biggest issue for me was it was a bit too long. It started out strong but after awhile I started to get a bit bored. Then the ending came along and I was back at enjoying the story. Tightening up the tale and reducing it by 80 to 100 pages would've been perfect. I do look forward to the creatures next adventure though.

I received an ARC from Reedsy Discovery in exchange for an honest review.

Holiday Spirit by John DeGuire is a fun holiday romp that combines genres in some unexpected ways. The novel follows some classic horror characters from Count Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Phantom of the Opera, along with mummies, werewolves, witches, and the like throughout this Christmas tale. The witch and her associates are trying to get rid of Christmas and other beloved holidays while Dracula, his werewolf wife, and company are attempting to save the holidays.

I don't often read holiday themed novels, but genre and monster mashups can be a lot of fun when done right. John DeGuire does a great job working with the classic characters. The classic characters are still recognizable and feel like themselves while getting a modern update. He also makes some really creative calls when it's time for the characters to interact with one another, especially classics that haven't interacted before in past mashups. Honestly, there's a bit of something for everyone in this book.

I only have one real issue with this story. It clocks in at 386 pages, but it could easily be tightened up and streamlined to somewhere around the 300 page mark. As much as I loved where this story started, around the mid-point I was starting to flag and lose some interest. The novelty of the whole thing was starting to wear off a bit. Things picked back up in time for the ending, but I would have preferred this to be much shorter.

While Holiday Spirit by John DeGuire isn't quite a favorite read, I still had a good time trying this author's debut. As much as I enjoyed the story in this format, I bet it would make a cool movie as long as it had the right cast. If you are a fan of the classic Universal horror movies, The Sandman, or The Nightmare Before Christmas, you may also like this as well.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a free ebook copy in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, so the premise to this book is a lot of fun. And there was definitely some technicality to the writing that was to be admired. (Some of the villain's POV was entirely in rhyme). I have some issues with this that I really feel like could have been fixed with a hard edit. There was definitely an onslaught of information at times that wasn't entirely needed for the plot... it just felt like what the author learned after reading some Wiki articles. Some of the descriptions were repetitive (I refuse to believe that so many people's fear response is to crap themselves... some, yes. But as many times as it gets mentioned in this book? No.) I honestly think this book would have benefited from being split right down the middle into two short novels or novellas. New characters are almost continuously introduced, and the problem spoken of in the blurb is solved right exactly at the halfway mark. Then, the problem presents itself again but in a new way. This would have made sense as a book 1, book 2 scenario... but as one complete novel? It kind of made it drag toward the end.

Wow, this was a wild one! If you're expecting some type of old style TV holiday special event feel with this book, think again!! The author indeed pulls out all the stops to create a wonderful and richly detailed holiday-themed story involving pretty much all of our favorite classic monsters, but this book is all over the place. And definitely NOT for the kiddos!

But that is not by any means whatsoever to say it is bad. It's a beautifully detailed, engaging story that will have you hooked from the beginning and pretty much keeps going non-stop at a fairly above-medium pace. The writing in this book is some of the most unusual I've ever read. This author clearly shows his writing talents by intertwining very mature vocabulary with quite a bit of witty and pun humor, as well as providing lots of historical details to character/cultural/folklore backstories, different languages, medical terminology that includes listing unusual phobias and conditions, weaponry and specialty vehicle makes and models of all kinds.....it's just such a huge blending of clearly researched material that all went together flawlessly to create such an amazingly written tale. However, it also has its fair share of very adult language (again, NOT for the young'uns!) and there are even brief instances of innuendo and even some disturbing material here and there that even makes an adult squeamish. And not necessarily in the gory way...

The characters, of course, were the main attractions. Specifically the monsters. You have the witch, vampire, werewolf, Frankenstein's monster, creature from the black lagoon, mummies, Jeckyll and Hyde, the invisible man, and even the Phantom of the Opera! What I enjoyed most about the way these iconic characters were portrayed in this book is the fact that many had a twist to their familiar roles. Certain characters had twists to their personalities that seemed out-of-character for them due to their popular staple roles in the genre but it worked for the type of story the author was going for in the book. There were, of course, quite a few notable human characters but they really took a back burner to the monsters. In truth, the human characters seemed to be used mainly as a device to display a parallel to the monsters regarding the issues of old prejudices and how each faction looks upon others' differences. Basically, I felt this parallel was showing me that there is good, bad, and ugly no matter what category of humanity one belongs to. Of course, the human characters do serve an important part in and of themselves, mostly the children as the plot surrounds their peril and hopelessness of their plight and, as such, is clearly meant to illicit sympathy from the reader. But there are certain humans you do become somewhat attached to.

Not gonna lie: I was surprised at the level of gore and body horror in this book! There's a LOT! It's brutal and graphically detailed but honestly not too explicit; yet, enough to make one cringe even though some of it is almost comically done. I really enjoyed the adventure aspects of the story. There were some absolutely great and intense fight/chase scenes, and the story delivered a lot of them. There were a few very shocking plot twists that I did not see coming, which is always fun in a read.

There were a few things I didn't enjoy, though. I felt some of the monsters could've been done better; many were given real personalities where others were used as just fodder, which was a little disappointing to me. I felt let down by the introduction of what I thought were going to be crucial human counterparts/allies to the monsters early on only to never see them again so I felt a loss of potential there. And, of course, part of the plot revolves around the issues of prejudice and unfair judgements the monsters face so there are a few triggers within that aspect. There's also a vicious trigger of animal cruelty/death so please be mindful of that as well.

I'm giving this book a solid 4 stars. It was largely a great, entertaining, engaging read. Despite a few bumps and some disturbing material here and there, I did like this book a lot. I would even reread it for the holiday season again. I do recommend this to anyone who enjoys a mix of horror, adventure, comedy and a love of the classic traditional monsters all rolled into one.

When the children in town start to go missing, the concerned adults are quick to point fingers at the most likely culprits: the monsters. However, the monsters are not willing to take the blame for a crime they didn't commit and are desperate to bring justice to the town and to themselves.

What did I like about this book? The heart. The concept! I love love love any book where monsters are the main characters and this didn't disappoint! Count Dracula and his beloved werewolf wife and their band of well known monsters were a team filled with so much heart. I loved them all and I loved each of their backgrounds, classic enough to be familiar but with new additions to add a unique flair. The villans were also good! Believe it or not, there was heart there as well! I honestly just loved the idea of monsters trying to save themselves from a crime they had no part in.

I loved that so much of the content held subtle nods to so much spooky media throughout history. The hidden double meanings behind age old nursey rhymes, the introduction and explanation of phobias and terrors of all kinds, common and uncommon. It was a bundle of spooky fun that left me eager to turn every page.

My biggest complaint was, unfortunately, the pacing. I have found, though, that sometimes I just simply struggle with the pacing of horror novels so I wouldn't say that the pacing makes or breaks it. I personally would have just preferred to have the character motives and backgrounds be given out slowly and bit by bit. I felt like there were times when there was a little too much information being thrown at me at once, especially in the beginning. Longer chapters with a little more uncertainty would have been more my speed. However, aside from the pacing, this really was a fun and unique story. Definitely something I may want to reread when Halloween rolls around!

The book is atmospheric and gripping. Children used to call Bridgett as Bitch Witch. While she has a painful past, and her fate has been cruel to her. She was charged as guilty of witchcraft but she survived. You will get to read about the witch’s family and witch trials. The children not only called her Bitch witch but they also did wrong things with her like throwing eggs on her on halloween day and the old lady kept asking for help but no one came forward and because of them, the family heirloom also broke so she ventures on a quest of vengeance. She devise a plan to punish those children. And soon children starts disappearing from the Vermont. The holiday spirit becomes dull.

While Dracula and his wife Aoife, they come to meet Saul Frankenstein, their old best friend. The Rumours of monsters grips the town and the monsters were being blamed behind disappearance of children so Count Dracula, Aoife, Saul and the invisible man, they all decide to clear their names.

I liked to read about Aoife, half wolf and half human. The saying about her grandmother somehow came true about wolfsbane blooms and the full moonlight. Dracula was sweet. Dracula and Aoife have a strangely good bond. The author wrapped it up so well. This is an enjoyable holiday horror story.

I do not think I have ever read a book such as this. This book went beyond the premise of good vs. evil. There were so many aspects of this novel:
1. The incorporation of all the favorite horror monsters
2. Many descriptions of words and definitions of many several types of phobias.
3. Reminders of nursery rhymes and the true meaning behind them. My favorite is the origin of ‘Ring Around the Rosies’ a song about the Black Plague.
4. Several poems from old times entered throughout the
story.
The descriptions of the various battles were well described and the reader could easily find themselves immersed in the story. There were also highs and lows in the story. I was sure it was the end for several different character, only to be revived in the next chapter. Some of the evil beings received their comeuppance while others disappeared without a trace. This book ran through my mind like a movie. If you love horror, sci-fi and a touch of romance then this book is for you.

John DeGuire's Holiday Spirit is a genre-defying modern fairy tale that alternately charms and chills. Featuring a greatest hits of horror icons from Frankenstein to the Creature from the Black Lagoon, this adventure is neither totally whimsical nor convincingly scary. Chapters are extremely short, which contributes to the storybook tone, but also renders more lyrical passages into mediocre poetry. A strong start gives readers the origin story of a real-life witch who is viciously harassed by neighborhood children on an idyllic Halloween night. We're then introduced to a cast of characters including, but not limited to Dracula, a werewolf and the Mummy. As the narrative progresses, unfortunately, the silliness of the plot bleeds into the story's presentation and makes what might otherwise be a uniquely humorous horror adventure into a cartoon. This wasn't for me, but it might be fun for the right audience.

The use of familiar characters in different and familiar ways to tell plus move the story along was very appealing. However, the author seemed to drag the story out in spots which took away from the appeal of familiar characters used to tell the story.

Overall a great premise for what could be a really great story with a little trimming in spots. A witch sets out to ruin Christmas and a rag tag group of familiar characters go on an adventure to try and stop her.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Netgalley ARC- 2.5

The first part of this book is a solid 4 stars. The last half is a two

This book includes all your favorite horror characters-and makes them have a little more heart. Minus the witch and her goon squad.

This book is a little long. Lots of extra information thrown in that can definitely be edited out.
The concept is very interesting… Strong start but seems the ending was not thought out or maybe just rushed.

Book was very hard to follow in terms of setting
Lots of animal cruelty/killing

Holiday Spirit is a wildly imaginative and gripping debut that blends holiday charm with supernatural suspense. The mystery of the missing children, the eerie atmosphere, and the unexpected cast of heroic “monsters” make this story impossible to put down. From a noble Dracula to a fearless werewolf and a patchwork EMS captain, the characters are unique, heartfelt, and surprisingly touching. The mix of romance, mystery, and holiday magic works beautifully, delivering both thrills and warmth. A perfect read for anyone who loves spooky stories with heart—especially during the holidays!

When this book popped up on my Facebook feed, I knew I needed to read it. First, the cover is amazing and secondly the story sounded interesting. It has monsters, ghouls and witches, oh my. A Hansel and Gretel fairy tale vibe BUT…… this story is not for kids lol. It’s a story of protecting the towns children and saving the holidays spirit for everyone. I enjoyed reading this story. It made me gasps a few times lol but looking forward to reading sequel. I highly recommend it.

I really loved the characters and the story itself however I STRUGGLED with the writing style. So strange and so many chapters and things were so out of place and the action scenes were great but also would end quickly and felt rushed. Some chapters were so unnecessary and I skipped pages to finish. I probably won’t pick up any of the other books in the series but I really loved the monster gang.

I wanted to rate it a three and a half.
It's definitely a take on the holidays. Lots of gore and nasty monsters - not always the ones we thing of as monsters. There are lots of little references to holiday music and traditions popping up at interesting points in the story. There are two more books in the series. Not putting them on my TBR pile right now. They will remain in contention until I have a bit more time.

This is a fantastic read that defies categorization. This author totally blows my mind with their ability to mix genres and create this intricate story that's both spooky and cheerful. The author masterfully inserts small factual details into the fictional narrative in a way that intrigues and delights. It's clear that Dr. DeGuire put a ton of research into crafting this amazing story.

I have a lot of questions about this book. Namely, why is it four books stuffed into one? The pacing definitely suffered from the lack of clarity in the plot and glut of characters. There were some truly funny moments (Erik's demise, bye felicia), but I could never tell if I was laughing on purpose or by accident.

Also, evil DID trope is quite tired.

Mish mash of old movie monsters

The story didn't make sense. It seemed to want to say something about prejudice, but if the people you are persecuting really are horrible child predator criminals...
