Alice in Wonderland meet Peaky Blinders in this dark fairytale retelling with a mafia twist.
Think you know Wonderland? Think again.
No one would guess that the idyllic Wonderland everyone knows and loves is held together by a barely maintained peace accord between the two most notorious gangs left to roam and run the streets. After joining forces to take out the Bleeding Hearts in a turf war that nearly leveled the city fifteen years ago, tensions are high between the White Rabbits and the Twisted Grins as boundaries are pressed and the Underground clamors for chaos once more.
Mayor Kit Corbyn and District Attorney Ophelia Quinn may look like the perfect peace-loving duo to the public, putting the needs of the people in their charge before themselves and their self-interests, but the Underground knows the truth. The Twisted Grins and the White Rabbits are prepared to fight over every last piece of the city, and no one is safe from their looming war.
The Angel of Death, the most efficient finisher for the Twisted Grins, yet no one knows who they are or where Kit managed to find them. Death comes on quiet wings, flying through the air as swift as a knife. Kit's sanity begins to slip as reporters beg to know the truth of Arie Clark, his reclusive adopted daughter set to inherit his fortune and take over his place at City Hall. No one has ever seen or heard from Arie, but everyone knows that if they get too close to her, Kit will send his Angel after them, and no amount of prayers will save you from your fate.
The White Rabbits may be late to the party, but they're as ruthless as it comes. Rumor has it Ophelia bathes in the blood of her enemies, calling upon the Curse of Wonderland to do her dirty work no one else can handle. Mad Maddox Harrington kills without question or care, and although Ophelia likes to believe he's a Rabbit, Maddox simply laughs every time she asks. He'll never be one of them, instead choosing whichever side sounds the most fun at the time. He lives his life by shooting first and never asking questions, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake impressive enough to rival Kit's Angel. The people of Wonderland pray Maddox never sets his sights on them, because once he does, there's no recovery.
The Angel v. The Curse You better pray you never get sick.
take a shot every time he says "lost girl" overall this book was very meh. there's like no plot. everything is choppy and disjointed. it's like random events are happening but there is no overarching plot or anything that propels the story forward. there are these gangs (that have potential!) but there's never really anything that happens between them bc the focus of this book seems to be on the two mcs fcking each other. and how does any of this book relate to alice in wonderland?? besides the character names, nothing from this book was reminiscent of alice in wonderland. speaking of the character names, the amount of nicknames throughout the book was actually appalling. i need a glossary of all these nicknames. it makes it confusing to decipher and remember who is who and it got real old real fast. the dude said "lost girl" in every other sentence and it truly drove me crazy by the end of the book. no one talks like that!! also the author definitely has a few phrases they like to use. their writing is a bit repetitive bc of this. i can't really pinpoint what exactly made it kinda hard to read but it just missed the mark for me personally. i think I had high expectations for this book bc of tiktok but it was just lackluster to me. i think there's def potential here, but the book just felt unfinished. like it has a bunch of scenes and chapters that would be great if they actually flowed together. overall, meh. could've been better (also def could've been worse) but maybe it's just not for me.
"Wonderland is f**cked." But that is exactly what makes this book so delectable.
Let's start with the concept (attempting to keep this spoiler-free), so that we can really dive in to just what makes this book tick. Have you ever wondered what Alice in Wonderland would be like with gangs, dark secrets, a swoon-worthy madman, and loads of smut? Me either. But I will never understand how I have lived this long without such a fun page-turner of a story!
Let's start with a blonde baddie we all think we know. She is a woman of many names. Arie Clark. A. Angel of Death. Lost girl. Alice. A weapon in her own right, an extension of the blades she wields. She is everything I wanted in a FMC and MORE. She is witty, cunning, capable. More so, she is relatable. Her desires, her morals, her loyalty to those she loves most. CM Jones takes a well-known and well-loved character we all grew up with and gives her the chance to grow up, too. In every conflicting emotion and desire, we are given the chance to see a fragment of ourselves in the (pardon my french) insanely badass woman that Alice has molded herself into.
Now, onto the MMC. The Curse of Wonderland, Mad Maddox Harrington. LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING... He is dangerous and impulsive and down BAAAAAAD for our girl (Pardon, his girl). He WORSHIPS the ground she walks on, yet somehow has the audacity to put that brat in her place. From the moment he is on the page, my feet were kicking like a schoolgirl. And though the nickname he gave Arie (Lost girl) was a bit distracting at times throughout the book, it really only drove the point home that homeboy was OBSESSED with her.
Overall, this was such a fun twist on a classic tale that kept me turning pages all the way to the end. It was not at all what I was expecting, but in the best way possible!!
I thought I would have to know Alice in Wonderland plot well to understand the book. I didn’t. This book was amazing!! The whole book I thought I knew what was coming next and I was wrong. I was throughly surprised throughout the book and loved the LUST that was all the way through. The whole time I knew what I wanted to happen but damn CM Jones you sure know how to build suspense in many different aspects of the book making you wonder a ton of shit at once! I was a bit confused in the first chapter but that was just as I was getting a grasp on the characters. I feel that with other books so it’s nothing to dock this book points on. 1000% recommend reading and love that chapters jump between two characters!!
