Two teenagers fall through a portal in an abandoned mineshaft, finding themselves alone in a world where magic exists and the monsters come out at night. Only... the night comes every ten minutes and not even death can help them escape.
-
Alexandra Cutter has hopes for the future. Until she goes missing, lost to a world that is in ruins, where cuts and bruises heal in an instant. A world where you either find shelter, or fight for your life until the sun comes up. A world where she is completely alone.
When Steven Stone is forced to move to Garda Valley, he is flat out angry about it. Until the dreams start. Dreams about the girl who went missing, the girl with the soft smile and pretty green eyes that he’s never even met. But the images he sees of an island, the woods and a dark castle are far from a dream. They are a nightmare.
When Steve wakes up on a beach and the girl from his dreams saves his life, he realizes that he is trapped there too. Not only are Steve and Alex forced to survive the elements and learn to live together as they search for the way out, but they are left with the question, what happens if they never do?
“I don’t think we have to be lost to this nightmare. When I’m with you… I feel like I’m lost to a dream.”
A thrilling and adventurous YA fantasy.
In a world where night comes every 10 minutes, along with the monsters that live in the dark, Steven and Alex are forced into a game of survival.
This book had me on the edge of my seat! This was such a fun fast paced read that was easy to follow along with. The slow burn romance was so cute. And I must say, your take on the Enderman was utterly horrific. I loved it! This book absolutely exceeded my expectations. I can’t wait to read more about Steven and Alex!
Lost To A Dream is a YA fantasy that is inspired by Minecraft. You absolutely do not have to play Minecraft to like this book, but as a player myself I can really appreciate all of the references to the game.
This book was a really fun, interesting, YA fantasy book. The description had said it was like Minecraft, meets horror, meets fantasy, and I feel like it delivered on all of that!
First, the characters were cute. We spent the majority of our book with our FMC and MMC, Ali and Steven. I liked them both. Ali was a strong resilient badass, and Steven was super sweet, strong, supportive, and I loved that he had no issue with the fact Ali was smarter and stronger than him for the majority of the book. Their connection was adorable. Again this is YA so the romance is very PG, but it was cute and age appropriate for the characters.
The world building was interesting. I can see where the author took inspiration from, but made twists to make it her own. I found the entire portal world interesting, and I'm excited to learn more about it. I have some theories, so I'm interested to see if I'm right or not!
The books ends on a mild cliffhanger, and I know this will be a series. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one!
The characters of this story have a way of connecting with you and making you root for them. While there are dark and terrible moments in this story, there are also moments where you can’t help but smile. The perfect balance.
With the majority of the book consisting of two characters, there is a point of the story where the pacing slows down. However, I believe this allows us to know the characters on a deeper level and really understand how they’ve grown.
I have nothing but applause for the incredible world building. Each moment, action, creature, character and place in this story is well-thought out, making them easy to imagine. With the perfect cliff hanger at the end, we know there is more adventure to come. As it is the first book of six, I cannot wait to see more of Steven, Alex, and their new world.
“When I’m with you… I feel like I’m lost to a dream… and… I don’t want to wake up.”
First of all, I want to adamantly thank the author, @CourtneyRosaleen, for the opportunity to read an Advance Reader Copy of this book. I enjoyed reading this book and falling through the portal with the characters. Release Date: July 31, 2024!
My synopsis of the story line: Lost to a Dream is a never ending adventure that follows the two main characters, Steve & Alex (or Steven & Ali as they later go by). Steve moves to a new town where he quickly is drawn to the posters of a missing person, a beautiful girl, Alexandra Cutter. He feels so drawn to her despite never knowing her. He sees her in his dreams, nightmares rather, where he is desperately trying to get to her. Until one day, it's not a dream any more… she is real… and saving his life.
Steven and Ali find themselves in another world trying to figure out a way back home while trying to survive the obstacles this other world is throwing at them. They discover they are more equipped to handle the challenges this world presents than they expected. They also become aware of the fact that they are souls belonging to two worlds. They find themselves living a life they can possibly find peace in despite the horrors of this new world, while also discovering the feelings they have for each other run deeper than just survival partners.
Will they find a way back to the home they once knew? If they do, do they WANT to go back home?
My opinion: I absolutely loved reading this book! I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this before but it sort of reminds me of a Maze Runner type of vibe. I have seen the Minecraft reference but I haven't played Minecraft so I can not personally comment on the likeness.
The world building is incredible as well as the description of the characters and creatures. This world is insanely complex and yet, Courtney writes the description of our surroundings in such detail without it being boring or drawn out. The way the main characters grab a hold of your heart is also impressive for a new author. I felt so drawn to both main characters which is honestly a bit rare for me!
The soft and age appropriate romance in this book is also one of my favorite parts. Oftentimes, you will see authors write extremely mature romance scenes when the characters are young teens but I feel like the romance aspect of this book is absolutely innocent yet breathtakingly beautiful.
My favorite thing about the entire book is the pace of the book. I LOVE how the action scenes actually FEEL like you in fact took part in the action and then you rejoice when the pace slows and the characters rest. For a new author to evoke such an intense feeling of adrenaline and rest really impresses me. Way to go, Courtney!
Only one little tiny con for me was the use of a particular profanity (g**d*****). Personal preference, which I know doesn’t bother some readers but just a little heads up, if it does bother you, it's in there, quite a bit.
All in all, I HIGHLY recommend this book! I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to read this as a part of her ARC team! I can’t wait to see what happens next with Steven & Ali (and whomever else may be there ;)).
Thank you, Courtney Rosaleen, for the opportunity to read your debut novel!
Lost to a Dream was such a fun and entertaining read! For me, this was the perfect blend of magic, romance, and suspense. I was immediately invested in the story, the characters, and the world building. Courtney’s writing style is so descriptive and engaging. I loved reading from the point of view of both Alex and Steve. The young romance is so sweet, the monsters are spooky, and the magic is intriguing. No spoilers here, but the ending sets up perfectly for book two and I am so eager to see where Courtney is going to take this world next. I look forward to reading the rest of the Lost Series!
First thing first, THANK YOU for letting me be apart of your ARC team!
🗝 Forced proximity ✨️ Found family 🗝 Multiple POV ✨️ Discovery of powers 🗝 He falls first ✨️ Lost in the woods 🗝 Slow burn ✨️ Fated bonds
Special moments for me.. Chapter 18 & 29🥹🥹
It was an amazing debut novel! I usually read books with extreme smut😂 so this was a bit of a struggle for me but the overall story🫶🏽🫶🏽 & the ending?! It leaves you wanting to know more! There was action, romance & huge world building. I am interested to know one main big thing but I didn’t get my answer just yet.. so I am so excited to see where the author takes this series & I will be sticking around for sure💘💘
What a wonderful book Courtney Rosaleen has written! The love between Steven and Ali was so beautiful. Their characters have such depth to them at such a young age. I can’t wait to see how their characters grow in future books. They already seem so advanced and strong. The magic system in this books was so well thought out. The monsters and realm that that they are in was so terrifying that I was anxious for the characters. I was SO INVESTED! Such a great debut novel! Please pick this up! You won’t regret it!
Unfortunately, I had to DNF at 60% after pushing myself to try to finish the book for chapter after chapter.
The summary and idea of the book had initially intrigued me, but I felt like there was nothing to grasp of that excitement when I started to read the actual book.
The main characters are barely 16 and had so many tortured emotions about being themselves likable and crushing on each other, which is probably appropriate for that age, but just really made me lose interest in their connection.
I also just kept having to push reality aside for the disbelief of how much the female lead accomplished on her own in six months while surving and learning about the new world. (building a multi-level house, a garden and farm to sustain herself, a full forge and weapons room, trap doors, and secret escape tunnels) It was just all a bit too much for me to believe and kept me from being able to fully delve into the story.
All in all, just not for me. But I'm sure there will be fans out there who can suspend their disbelief better than I can and find something to enjoy about this read.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Dev editor for this book. I know nothing about Minecraft but I enjoy fantasy. This book was a lot of fun!
The first 3rd of the book was a little slow (not boring) as the author built two different worlds and developed all the characters and storyline. However, once it picked up, it didn’t let up.
If you enjoy a more contemporary, YA fantasy and wouldn’t mind tying in Minecraft, I HIGHLY recommend this book. I can’t believe it’s a debut.
Thank you so much Courtney for allowing me to ARC read (and I am so sorry my review is late 😭)
Overall, I thought the plot and premise of the book was super cute and fun. As someone who grew up playing Minecraft, and I still play on occasion, this story is something I feel like I would ATE UP ~10 years ago (though, for a YA book there is a lot of swearing. I did not mind it just something to be aware of if you want to give to a child). I loved seeing all the references to the game, including (but not limited to): mobs, day cycle, nether (+some foreshadowing to the end), enchantment table, crafting, building, and more. I really loved Alex (Ali)'s badass-ness, and seeing her struggles and then thrive through the new challenge life has given her. Same with Steven... he adapted to his new "life" well, accepting Ali and then working together to try to get out.
However, I had a few notes that resulted in me leaving this book a 3 star review (I will spoiler tag):
Lost To A Dream weaves a gripping tale of survival and mystery in a world turned upside down. The story revolves around Alexandra Cutter, who unexpectedly finds herself lost in a desolate world where injuries heal miraculously fast, but human connection is a rare commodity. Steven Stone, on the other hand, is thrust into this situation against his will, only to discover that his dreams are inexplicably linked to Alexandra's disappearance.
The narrative unfolds with a palpable tension as Steven navigates his strange new surroundings, haunted by vivid dreams of a girl he's never met but feels inexplicably connected to. The author masterfully builds suspense, layering the mystery of the book with each turn of the page. The setting itself becomes a character, its eerie landscapes and hidden dangers adding depth to the protagonists' plight.
The relationship between Steven and Alexandra evolves organically from wary strangers to reluctant allies bound by their shared predicament. Their journey to survive in this harsh environment is fraught with challenges that test not only their physical resilience but also their emotional fortitude. As they uncover the secrets, they confront existential questions about fate, isolation, and the possibility of escape.
The plot is driven by a series of revelations that keep readers on edge, craving answers alongside the characters. Each twist and turn adds layers to the narrative, culminating in a climax that is as surprising as it is satisfying. The author's prose is vivid and immersive, painting a vivid picture of a world both hauntingly beautiful and perilous.
Ultimately, Lost To A Dream is a captivating blend of dystopian fiction and mystery, where the survival of its characters hinges not just on physical prowess but on unraveling the enigma that binds them together. It's a testament to resilience and the enduring power of hope even in the darkest of circumstances.

The Mysterious Island meets Minecraft with Stranger Things inspired monsters in this YA/NA dark romantasy about survival, and hope.
This story has a lot of cozy found family moments that made me cry happy tears especially with how genuine, and caring the characters are.The romance between the fmc & the mmc has a lot of cute & heartwarming moments.
The plot twists are top-tier especially the one in the epilogue!🔥 To avoid spoilers I will not say anything in regards to said plot twist.

Thank you Mrs.Rosaleen for the opportunity to read your beautiful debut book, and I look forward to reading the sequel soon.🌲✨️
I’ve never played Minecraft. I’ve watched some people play a little bit, sure, but I’ve never been tempted to play myself. Until now. I finished this book and immediately want to go download the game 😂
Okay, first of all - a red headed FMC named Alex?! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Alex is such a badass. I totally understand Steve, because her refusal to ever give up totally made me fall in love with her too! And speaking of Steve! What a big soft boi 🥹 the actual definition of Cinnamon roll & Golden retriever. I loved watching these characters grow both independently and together. I cannot wait to see what the rest of the series has in store for these two.
Secondly- world building. Even without the minor Minecraft knowledge I have, I would have had no problem imagining exactly where the MC’s were at any given point in time. Since I have seen a few of the different locations in the game it was even cooler to read the different descriptions of the locations.
Lost to a Dream is a thicc book, but it didn’t FEEL like a thicc book. I physically could not put it down and found my self constantly thinking about it when I wasn’t glued to my kindle. As torturous as they are, I love a good cliff hanger and LTAD has a perfect cliffy 👌🏻 I’ll absolutely be considering this book as a pillar to my Roman Empire while I suffer the long wait for book two.
In this young adult dark fantasy romance inspired by the world of Minecraft, readers are taken on a journey through a uniquely crafted universe where love and adventure intertwine. The book offers a gripping ending that leaves you craving more, skillfully blending elements of dark fantasy and romance against the backdrop of a familiar gaming world.
The two main characters, Alexandra Cutter and Steven Stone, bring a new element to the story with their extensive and intriguing backgrounds. Readers will find themselves entranced with their slow-burn romance and effortless banter.
While the pacing may slow down at times, the latter half more than compensates for this with its thrilling narrative and unexpected twists. Each turn of the page builds anticipation, making it difficult to put down as you delve deeper into the characters' lives and their encounters with bone chilling creatures.
Overall, Lost to a Dream is a captivating read for fans of both dark fantasy and romance genre. The story successfully combines imaginative world-building with a compelling love story that does not solely rely on the existing game universe.
I personally cannot wait to see where Alexandra and steven's next journey will take them.
I was lucky enough to be sent this first book in The Lost Series (thank you @courtney)!
This book is unlike anything l have read before, and l just finished a different portal fantasy.
We meet, Steven, a video game loving teen after he arrives in Garda Valley, CA. A small, tight knit town where he is finally starting to feel at home for once. After making new friends at school, he hears about Alex, a classmate who mysteriously disappeared - almost out of thin air.
Shortly after seeing her face on posters, Steven begins to have nightmares about her 👀. A few months into his new life, he overhears his dad being reassigned to a different city (again). Distraught, Steven storms off into the woods, almost falls off a cliff and ends up exploring a mineshaft. He finds a pool of stars and is transported to another world where he wakes, staring into the bright, green eyes of a familiar face - Alex. He found her, at last, and now they’re lost together trying to find their way back home.
I LOVE this book. The banter, tension, strength and character growth are incredible! Not to mention how easy it is to get sucked into the world with such descriptive writing.
Warning: this book ends on a cliffhanger and l CANNOT wait to get my hands on book 2!!!
I LOVED this book! Monsters and magic, action and adventure, and a swoon-worthy us-against-the-world romance! The two main characters have such incredible chemistry that develops into a powerful bond as they fight with and for each other. I was hanging on to every moment. The story has amazing world building and a unique, dual POV character-driven plot. The pacing is a perfect blend of intimate moments that give us an intuitive glimpse into how and why these characters care so much for each other, and exciting, edge-of-your-seat action. I know nothing about Minecraft and I still devoured every page of this book. And the end?? No spoilers, but I can’t WAIT for the next book in this incredible world the author has created!
"I don't think I have to be lost to this nightmare. When I'm with you... I feel like I'm lost to a dream... and... I don't want to wake up."
Lost to a Dream is a beautiful story with lots of adventure, magic, and love. For it begin a YA fantasy, I really enjoyed this book.
The story starts out with a teenager who moves to a new town, is at a new school and having to make new friends. I wondered how this was a fantasy until he gets lost into an unknown world. The world building is continuous throughout the book as the characters are lost and there is always something unexpected happening. I love the dual POV in this book and the chapters are a perfect length. The romance is so adorable and I love the forced proximity and slow burn.
The characters go through so much emotion, trauma, and life changing events to survive. Ali is a strong FMC. I just love her! She creates this life for herself and almost loses all hope until she no longer has to be alone in this strange world. Steven is just the cutest. He is smart and a gentleman. They both seem to be very different, but yet carry similar qualities. They realize it as they begin to know each other better.
Courtney Rosaleen takes us on such a unique journey where time is almost lost. Darkness in this world has a new meaning of things that go bump in the night. There's so much mystery, moments of fright, and uncertainty as these characters explore and figure out this world they're in. This is a lovely story, but that ending!! I need book 2 like yesterday! I can't wait to continue reading this story. This is a great YA Fantasy with a touch of sweet romance.
First of all… DARN YOU COURTNEY. 😂 Second of all… WOW. This book was absolutely brilliant. It is so much different than any other books I have read and I ATE it up! It is a complete realistic adaptation of Minecraft and Courtney definitely knows her stuff. It’s insane how realistic she was able to describe things from the actual game. You can literally picture everything so clearly and I automatically knew the exact things from the game she was describing. The monsters are absolutely horrific and the things the characters go through are things that only happen in nightmares. Ali and Steven overcome so much together and learn to work as one unit to survive and be able to live somewhat peacefully. Their souls are completely enter twined with one another and they are stronger together. The romance side is a bit of a slow burn as both of them are figuring things out. And the banter between them, so good. The love story and growth between them is top notch and a delight to read. The magical elements are also incredibly well thought out and tie into everything perfectly. I am trying to keep this as spoiler free as possible but this is a MUST read if you like Minecraft, dark fantasy, romance, slow burns, or found family. I can’t wait to see where Steven and Ali’s next chapter takes them because… DARN YOU COURTNEY. 😂

✨️ My Thoughts ✨️ If you're interested in a dark fantasy book with a slow burn romance, then this book is the answer. This book was inspired by the world of Minecraft, and let me tell you... it is AMAZING. The world building is so detailed to the point that I could picture it as I read. Another awesome thing I want to point out is the freaking plot twists. Like @courtneyrosaleen you wrecked me a bit and gave me emotional damage!!! Just when I thought I knew what to expect, you did something COMPLETELY different. I love that!! If you need more things to convince you to read it... this book offers dual POVs, secret languages, and nightmares that will scare you.

I will tell you right now as someone who never really cared for the game Minecraft, I really liked this book! I think it helped that it was the complete MAIN focus of the book! It was a big factor, but not enough to make me not enjoy this!
@courtneyrosaleen was amazing and let me join her arc team for this book! Gave her my first impression of vibes it was giving, and we got to talking a little (she’s SUPER SWEET too) and she pointed out that she wanted to have it feel like a little Labrynth. Of which I of course blurted out to her I had the FATTEST crush on the Goblin King (even though he scared the shit outta me as well)! Which then caused me to like the book even more!
I enjoy alot of YA books. This was definitely another enjoyable one! It was so close to having me completely hooked, but I still enjoyed immensely! Was a very welcomed refresher from other books I’ve read!
Could definitely see myself rereading! I’ll also be waiting for the second one! I need to see if my hunch was right?!?
P.S. I’d still piss myself if I woke up to a sword against my throat!
ARC Review: Adventure, magic, romance, and mystery….this book has it all and then some! I was drawn to this book for the adventure and found family and was unable to put it down. It’s been a while since I’ve read YA but the romance in this was absolutely adorable and their banter was hilarious. It wasn’t until half way through that I learned it was inspired by Minecraft, and as someone who has never played, I would have never known! The world building was captivating and I desperately wish I could explore along with them. A huge thank you to @courtneyrosaleen for the opportunity to be an advanced reader 🖤 and that ending 👀👀👀 let’s just say you need to write faster because I cannot wait for the next one!
✨forced proximity 🖤found family ✨multiple POV 🖤he falls first ✨discovery of powers 🌳lost in the woods
Favorite quote: “I will always come back for you. I will never leave you. And I will ceaselessly do everything in my power to keep you safe.”
For fans of: 🎮 Video games (Minecraft inspired!) ✨ Found Magic 💀 Creepy creatures (so many of them...) ⚔️ YA heroes fighting monsters 🥰 YA romance (just smooching) 🌳 Lost in the woods 👥 Multiple POVs
Lost to a Dream is the first book in a series of six, along with a prequel. The first book in a fantasy series has a lot to accomplish and this story has strong character development, good pacing between action and exploration, and (I cannot say this enough) the monsters are creepy! I liked how descriptive the author was in building this world with the landscape and creatures.
Quote: "Because the heartbreak of watching her die each night is nothing compared to the thought of losing the dreams forever."
I am so grateful that I was able to receive the ARC…Thank you so much!
This book was adorable and so fun to read. i loved the Minecraft aspect but I don’t think you don’t need to have any knowledge of the game to enjoy the book. I liked the characters and the atmosphere. I personally wouldn’t label this one a slow burn lol it seems fast to me personally.
The cover of the book is beautiful. Honestly, I will probably buy the paperback to have on my shelf.
Two teenagers fall through a portal in an abandoned mineshaft, finding themselves alone in a world where magic exists and the monsters come out at night. Only... night comes every ten minutes and not even death can grant them escape.
This is a great YA dark fantasy. Courtney does a great job with world building and descriptive storytelling. I felt the high and lows, the joy, the fear, the pain, right along side our MCs, Alex and Steven. I also really enjoyed the pure innocence of young love intertwined with the complexity and darkness of this magical and dangerous world.
If you liked Minecraft or had kids playing you will love this!!
I will say I don’t usually gravitate towards a YA but this one had me interested as it is Minecraft like world they are in. It’s has so many likenesses and cute love story between the two MCs. The story and plot was great, world building also amazing! Only neg I could say is that some of the day to day could get repetitive but understand why it was done.
I can not wait to read the next book as she has said it is then 18+ and about to get a whole lot more interesting!!
Thank you Courtney Rosaleen for the opportunity to read your book as an arc read!
This was an amazing book that had great characters that you could easily connect with. This book starts off decently fast and you won’t ever feel rushed or bored while reading. The plot is extremely interesting, and the world that they are swept into is so mysterious that it makes you want to keep reading. The characters have a great connection and help each other fight through their own battles together. They are extremely strong characters and you are immediately rooting for them from the beginning. Overall this book was well written, funny, sad, and intriguing!
This was such a fun read. So nice that i can read it before it is our 31 juli. Fantasy and love and monsters. What can go wrong. The end is wrong ;) dont leave us hanging like that. that is just mean ;) now we have to wait for part 2. The start was bit slow for me. But after the first 100 pages it was starting to speed up and i really liked it. I got is as arc but that isnt influencing my opinion.
So many thanks to the author for the privilege of receiving an advance copy. What an excellent debut novel! I cannot wait for book 2, but in the meantime I have already recommended Lost to a Dream to several of my friends and family!
This book was so good. The writing was beautiful. The characters of this story have a way of connecting with you and making you root for them. While there are dark and terrible moments in this story. The world building was easy to understand. I can not wait for book 2. I will be reading more by this author
Wow! This book was so,so good! I absolutely loved the unique storyline and the characters. I felt like the author did a great job with her descriptions and could really picture this magical world we were in. There are elements of love, magic, dark fantasy, found family etc and it was so captivating. I am so excited to continue this journey with the future books! I am so grateful to have been a part of the ARC team and was able read this story ahead of its release date. Thank you so much Courtney and congratulations on such an amazing book!!
