Crossroads: In Quest of the Golden Road

Rate this book
Crossroads (In Quest of the Golden Road) is a play in four acts by William Schnabel. The plot is original and designed to make the spectator think about his own reality. A Wayfarer arrives at the Crossroads. He is looking for the Golden Road. But which path should he take? His choice is not a simple one because the future of his race depends on it. Once the choice is made, there is no turning back.

Crossroads have always been an important symbol for mankind, and examples abound in societies around the world, whether in Greece, Africa, India, the Caribbean or elsewhere. From a mythical standpoint it is a magical place where strange forces gather, some of which are malevolent. In ancient Greece, crossroads were the special haunt of Hecate and Hermes. Greeks paid homage to their goddess because she could see in all directions, so her guidance was precious. Hermes was associated with crossroads because he had access to the underworld, like Hecate, and because he was the messenger of the gods, so he could go anywhere and travel the most dangerous roads.

A crossroads is an appropriate starting point for William Schnabel’s play, where moral and political allegory fuse, echoing the creative imaginations of luminaries like Edmund Spencer, Jonathan Swith, Goethe, Dante and others. Crossroads is a multimedia spectacle with a Chorus, sound effects and visual imagery. Historical figures re-enact history before the spectators’ bedazzled eyes.

William Schnabel has written fiction and non-fiction. His works are read worldwide and The Phantom of Democracy, Summer of Love and Haight, May 68: The French Revolt, Gnothi Seauton, George Orwell and Big Brother, Haight-Ashbury 1965-1967, Lovecraft et ses doubles, Lovecraft et la race, et al.
