Ugh.
Why did we pick this as a buddy read? I can't remember.
I don't think Jayson drank the Kool-Aid and did the buddy read with us, but thanks for making the banner at least.



So what was this about?
Uh. I guess there's a future where MJ died from radioactive spider poisoning? And there's a universe where a gross Old Man Spider, who looks like a deranged Santa Claus with abs, keeps going back to try to save her? And a big electronic web was activated around part of (or all of?) NYC? Supposedly to save the citizens from the coming apocalypse?




There's a goblin, an old Miles Morales, a new (little kid?) Black Cat, and a Matrix version of Fisk.
Plus, Venom and MJ. Kinda.
Peter is sort of crazy, but so is everyone else, and there's time travel mixed with the Spider-verse.
And not in a cool way.



I guess I should have read the first Reign but this sucked so bad that I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
I just...what even was this?
Whatever it was, it wasn't good.
Swerve to avoid.

Could’ve been worse. Outside of a frenzied, gargled (sic) ending, I actually felt like a took a real journey with Peter & friends.

Gotta say, Andrew’s’ art has really stepped up since the original Reign (which I just re-read, and which has aged better since the anti-hype died down) - cleaner compsition, better line work, just feels less like you’re at one of those art shows by some wannabe avant-grade types who do “modern” because they suck at good art.

And I’m intrigued by the story concept.

The hardest part of believing these stories is hearing Peter say how many times some bone broke, and then watching him run or fight or even just stand on elderly bone fragments.

The second hardest part of this story was the number of climactic ending fake-outs I had to wade through to find the finale, and then the epilogue. (fist)

Spider-Man Reign 2 (#1-5)

Я дуже люблю оригінальну лімітку. Як на мене, тоді Ендрювсу вдалося видати неймовірно емоційну історію, тому анонсу сиквела я зрадів. Коли вийшов перший номер то я його прочитав і вирішив відкласти серію до повного виходу оскільки у нього нехай і були цікаві ідеї, але йому так і не вдалося мене вразити, що не було чимось поганим, перша частина так-то теж починалася слабенько. Сьогодні ж я всю лімітку прочитав і можу впевнено сказати, що я ненавиджу цей комікс.

Ми застаємо цю версію Пітера ув'язнену в симуляції де Мері Джейн все ще є живою, однак його швиденько рятує звідти маленька дівчинка у костюмі Чорної Кішки. Вирвавшись на волю Павук дізнається, що місто знаходиться під контролем Кінґпіна, а система WEBB проти запуску якої він боровся в минулій частині все-таки була увімкнена. В результаті втечі Пітер потрапляє в лігво Зеленого Ґобліна від якого дізнається, про якусь загадково подію в через яку було знищено весь світ окрім Нью-Йорку й отримує завдання повернутися в минуле на два дні для того, щоб знайти щось, що допоможе йому в теперішньому.

Спочатку пройдемося по хорошому, малюнок Кааре Ендрювса, який тут є не тільки сценаристом, а ще й художником, просто розкішний. Мужик чудово вдосконалив свій стиль за той час який пройшов з моменту, а тому екшен тут вийшов дуже класним. Також було два дуже емоційних моменти, які справді дотягують до тих які були в першій частині. Перший це вся перша половина третього номеру про ЕмДжей, а другий відбувається в четвертому номері. І… ем… ну на цьому з плюсами все.

Щодо мінусів то я навіть не впевнений з чого почати, мабуть, вартує сказати, що всі події в серії починаючи з другого по четвертий номер є йобаним філером. Суть в тому, що Паркер остаточно впав у маразм і буквально став шизом ледь не на рівні Крейзі Стіва, він майже одразу забиває на те про що його попросив Ґоблін й мчить рятувати ЕмДжей, в той час, як Кіті Кет займається створенням бомби, яка у фінальному номері практично нічого не робить (дякую за потрачений час). Він настільки поїхав своєю одержимістю знайти Мері Джейн, що тупо починає кидатися на людей.

Однак по ходу історії виявляється, що в минулому в яке прибув Пітер він є мертвим, а сама ЕмДжей є Веном. Як це сталося спитаєте ви? Впевнені, що хочете знати? Так от, Ендрювс дістає, один з багатьох додам, твіст зі сраки в якому виявляється, що це Павуче Одоробло уже подорожувало у часі й намагалося врятувати Мері, й робив він це декілька разів, й саме він вбив себе у минулому для того, щоб врятувати Мері Джейн, але просто забув. АЛЕ ДАЛІ ГІРШЕ! Виявляється, що цей ідіот доподорожувався в часі до того, що саме він спричинив подію яка в майбутньому знищила світ. АЛЕ ДАЛІ ТІЛЬКИ ТУПІШЕ! У кінці виявляється, що це все була найобка з боку Кінґпіна і за межами міста все нормально й існують герої, у всякому разі, я підозрюю, що це була частина його плану, оскільки в самому коміксі це не щоб проговорюється, а в інакшому випадку у нас вилізає дірка в сюжеті. До речі про дірки, місцеві подорожі у часі не мають ніякої логіки. Я уже вище згадав, що Паркер вбив себе в минулому, але все одно продовжив існувати. АЛЕ ДАЛІ ТІЛЬКИ ТУПІШЕ! Виявляється, що деякі версії Пітера які подорожували в часі були вбиті ВеномДжейн.

З нових персонажів тут у нас є Майлз та Кіті Кет. По ходу сюжету виявляється, що минулі пригоди Пітера в часі, рівіл яких вроді й мав би бути шокуючий поворот, як ніяк в перших номерах є на це певні гачки, а насправді подається просто як між іншим, зупиняв саме Моралес. Він тут в основному виконує роль перепони для Пітера. Кіті Кет же, ви блять не повірити, донька Майлза та Ґвен. Суть у тому, що під час "смертельної події" Майлз побіг у місто, а мала побігла за ним, в результаті чого Майлз думав, що вони обидві померли, й завів собі нову родину, а малював думала, що тільки Ґвен, на щастя для неї її до себе взяла Феліція.

В останньому ж номері все зводиться до сутички між Пітером який став Веномом та величезним Кінґпіном. І знову ж таки концептуально це цікаво, як ніяк Кінґпін мав невелике камео в оригінальній лімітці й рішення зробити з нього поганця тут мені сподобалося, але бля, ну його в цій лімітці практично немає. Щодо Венома ти знову ж таки, на папері те, що Пітер перемагає нового антагоніста завдяки старому круто, але на ділі просто похуй через минулі номери й те, що симбіот тут з'являється як Бог з машини.

Взагалі, я розумію що Кааре Ендрювс намагався тут зробити. Він намагався розповісти історію про те, що не все можна змінити й нам потрібно жити далі. Взагалі опустимо те, що Пітер типу змирився із тим, що Мері Джейн мертва в кінці оригіналу. І я розумію чому більшість сюжету зосереджена на Мері Джейн, бо все про, що пам'ятають з першого рейну це радіоактивна сперма. Не сцена коли в будівлю Пітера запустили ракету, не розкриття Венома, не весь четвертий номер наповнений моментами від якого завмирає серце через переживання за Пітера, а їбана радіоактивна сперма.

Я у відгуку на першу частину казав, що її незаслужено називають другорядним "DKR", так от я заявляю, що "Reign 2" хуйня рівня "DKR 2", якщо не гірше. І бля, ну можна ж було по шляху сиквелу Міллера й розширити свій світ, розкрити долі знайомих нам героїв які були змушені були покинути місто через заборону на суперів, але ні отримуйте подорожі у часі. Знаєте, я цього року думав не робити "топ найгірших коміксів" в підсумках року, бо не так багато чогось поганого прочитав, але нє ніхуя, я зроблю навіть якщо цей комікс буде там самотньою стояти.

Оригінальний Рейн є гнітючою, сумною, меланхолічною та неймовірно захопливою історією, яка дарує емоції на які не кожен комікс здатен. Я неймовірно люблю цю лімітку. В той же час Рейн 2 є неймовірною хуйньою та коміксом від знайомства з яким я вперше за довгий час настільки згорів (не здивуюся якщо минулий комікс з якого я настільки ж згорів виявитися теж про Павука). Нахуй цю лімітку.

WTF? It's illegible and incomprehensible. I generally like Kaare Andrews, but I don't understand what he was trying to do with this sequel that no one asked for. I couldn't explain what it's about with a gun to my head.

Ok, I think I actually prefer this one to the original. The original felt like such a Dark Knight Return homage- future sucks, government sucks, maybe the answer is a hero… or maybe not. This one leans into the absurdity playing with some major McFarlane inspiration and really lets the idea of HOPE shine through. I enjoyed the overtly catty Black Cat, I didn’t really get the green goblins and Venom was awesome. I LOVED the Kingpin soul sucking monster creature luring NYC into a matrix style death- so ridiculous but that’s what I love about comics. The story is full of truly insane twists and turns but at the end it’s about loving your family and trying to be the best you can be in the real world, I will try to be better Spider-Man.

Of all the Spidey stories, I'm not sure anyone was expecting, still less demanding, a sequel to Reign, AKA the one where Peter Parker has killer radioactive jizz. But while I could have done without Spider-Man becoming an abbreviation for Sperm-Murder-Man, there was a certain gothic grandeur to its grim future New York, and I like Kaare Andrews as an artist more than a writer, so I figured if the library had this in, why not? Well, pretty much every page gave me a fresh answer to that. Simultaneously ugly and overexcited, any scene that isn't a mournful tableau feels obliged to pop like a fight scene in bad anime. The opening issue finds an elderly Peter, freshly released from a Matrix-style pod, webslinging across town in his undies, looking like the hermit from Life Of Brian in a half-mask. As for the new-look Kingpin... Though, to be fair, his murderous iron grip on a Manhattan sealed off from the outside world is both more plausible and more topical than the comparatively urbane Vincent d'Onofrio take: "You are violating protest bylaws by using speech in a public area". That aside, the plot is an utter mess, dragging in familiar members of the supporting cast but far more concerned with amping up the grit and misery than making them remotely true to established characterisation, and mucking around so heavily with illusions and time travel that determining how much of the story is supposed to have actually happened, never mind when, would take far more effort than this farrago deserves. And then, despite the chaos, the ending somehow still feels entirely predictable, which is surely the worst of both worlds. I would say that hey, maybe this at least represents the endpoint of making Spidey stories as depressing as possible, and maybe with this warning in mind, the regular series could at least ease up...but one of the dreadful choices here has recently been mirrored in regular continuity, so we can't even cling to that possibility. Oy vey.

I already had low expectations going into Spider-Man: Reign 2 but somehow, it still managed to disappoint.

The story is all over the place—trying way too hard to be deep and emotional while making bizarre narrative choices that just don’t land. The pacing is an absolute mess, jumping between scenes in a way that makes it difficult to stay engaged. It is erratic, with abrupt scene changes that make it difficult to follow the storyline or invest in the characters' journeys.

The storyline gets even more confusing when Andrews somehow drags Venom into the mix, presenting him in a way that feels more like a contrived plot device than a natural extension of his established lore. His role is muddled, lacking a clear purpose or motivation that fits within the Spider-Man universe. MJ, who should have had a more significant, grounded development, is reduced to a mere supporting character whose arc is abandoned mid-story. And then there's Miles Morales, whose appearance in this story could have been super cool, but he’s inserted almost as an afterthought whose presence feels forced and just a device to make things more emotional.

That said, I’ll give credit where it’s due: the illustrations are an improvement over the first Reign. The character designs and panel layouts feel more refined, but that’s hardly enough to save this disjointed sequel or the sour experience of reading it.

The first Reign was pretty terrible, though it is memorable for being so controversial. Spider-Man: Reign 2, on the other hand, is a confusing, disjointed sequel that squanders its promising elements with a bizarre and overly complicated and ultimately forgettable plot.

This story was so confusing and made zero sense. The entire premise was like walking into the middle of a movie not knowing the context or plot and trying to piece everything together; there are just big swaths of elements missing that never get fully resolved.

Also, future Spider-Man and Miles are kinda a couple of selfish dickheads. Spider-man is also insufferably woebegone (like, 1,000% more than usual).

It’s the future so the Matrix is real and Peter Parker’s stuck in there because. Where’s MJ? Well, the sensible thing to do is time-travel with a mini Black Cat and actual goblins(!?) to fight Venom as MJ to not prevent the dystopian future that an Akira’d out Kingpin will enact for some reason. Time to get your dumbrellas out everyone - we’re heading back into Kaare Andrews’ Reign!

Apparently I read the first Reign but have absolutely no recollection of what happened in it besides not liking it. (I know, so obviously don’t read the sequel, right? This is a joke buddy read, guys, hence the banner - but I did actually read the book too) A Spider-Man version of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns? Yeah, that was a bad idea. But it’s not like big publishers and crap creators have stopped having bad ideas so, much like the trainwreck that was The Dark Knight Strikes Again, here’s the equally terrible Spider-Man: Reign 2.

Kaare Andrews is a poor writer and an appallingly inept storyteller. God knows what this fucking nonsense is about. Peter with Santa beard is obsessed with finding MJ to stop her from dying or something and all he says on every page is “WHERE IS MJ!?” like a braindead zombie.

Time travel happens somehow for some reason, Miles is also old and is a timecop or something and needs to stop Peter Santa beard from something. Green Goblin is an actual goblin apparently and has lots of mini goblins (thank god we don’t find out how those got spawned) that follow the mini Black Cat for some reason. Venom is also MJ in the past or something?

It just gets stupider and stupider as the book progresses. Some drivel about an electronic web to stop New York from becoming a nuclear wasteland and Kingpin’s running it all somehow but he’s also the Matrix or something. Good lord, what a mess.

I suspect I forgot the first Reign because I didn’t review it and I will definitely forget this claptrap too - but if I need reminding of how utterly terrible a Spider-Man writer Kaare Andrews is, I can remind myself of the garbage he came up with for Reign 2 with this review. Reign 2 is an absolute disasterpiece of how not to write superhero comics. And we’ll probably get Reign 3 in a few years because Marvel’s gonna Marvel.

Kaare Andrews dips his toes back into the extreme future world of Marvel with a sequel graphic novel, Spider-Man: Reign 2. Woken from a virtual reality existence, an older Peter Parker is thrust back into a nightmare version of New York City. Needing to save everyone from becoming digital copies under Wilson Fisk’s bloated thumb, the wall-crawler is tossed back in time to return with “the thing he needs most.” Peter believes he needs to come back with a living Mary Jane Watson, so he tears through old foes and friends alike. When confronted with the newest incarnation of Venom, however, Pete learns that his quest just might be for nought. Kaare Andrews has a talent for exceptionally fluid poses in his storytelling. The rest of the book is just a muddled mess designed to capitalize on his original gritty Spider-Man take. Nothing new is added to the mix; a rehashed plot with rehashed villains and old-man Miles Morales do little to justify the book’s existence. Even the art chores are bogged down by the frenetic pacing and overt reliance on dark inks, filling empty spaces with blobs and adding grotesquely large male characters. Fans who loved the original just might like this sequel, but Spider-Man: Reign 2 is just a watered down cash grab preying on nostalgia.

La storia è molto confusa. Si sforza di essere profonda ed emozionante, ma fa scelte narrative bizzarre che dirottano la narrazione verso altro, non portando comunque un vero valore aggiunto alla storia, ma appesantendo il tutto perché il lettore entra in possesso di informazioni che non portano a nulla. E infatti, il ritmo è un vero disastro, con salti tra le scene che rendono difficile rimanere coinvolti. È irregolare, con bruschi cambi di scena che rendono difficile seguire la trama o immergersi nel percorso dei personaggi. Nonostante la forzatura del "seme radioattivo" (chiamiamolo così) il primo capitolo mi era anche abbastanza piaciuto, sebbene fosse il ricalcamento impoverito de "Il Ritorno del Cavaliere Oscuro". Debitore e scopiazzone ignobile di quella storia, si, ma almeno con una direzione. Qui, invece, è tutto un grande Boh.

Disegni, per quanto mi riguarda, fenomenali. Certo, Kaare Andrews imita forse un po' troppo Todd McFarlane, ma diciamo più che lo omaggia mettendoci del suo. Almeno questa cosa gli fa avere una stella.

Una secuela mas extraña aún si cabe que la primera parte. Ya estoy un poco arto de viajes en el tiempo y multiversos, con una trama alargada innecesariamente.

El final que tuvo el personaje en la anterior historia fue increíble y en esta secuela Peter parece no haber aprendido absolutamente nada.

Giros del guión extraños, cambios en el comportamiento y objetivos de los personajes, muchisimos agujeros de guion…

Le doy 2 estrellas porque el dibujo está muy bien y tiene algunos muy buenos momentos.

(Y si Spiderman no dijera “creo que acabo de romperme un hueso” todo el rato quizás le daba hasta 3 estrellas)

I am starting to hate the multiverse, then you have the multiverse and time travel could things get any more confusing?

Stopping the Reign Peter/Spider-Man freed one of his greatest enemies and possibly ruined the world. Trapped in a loop with the woman he lives with the love of his life MJ. However back in reality he knows what happened to her and he will do anything to save her. He will go through anyone to do it even himself or another Spider-Man.

This book is very confusing and as soon as I think I have it figured out it changes again. I hate the artwork the old Santa Spider-Man just looks wrong. I would happily leave Reign in the past. The book finishes with a variant cover gallery.

Que desastre de libro.
Cada idea "interesante" que tiene (los cuerpos que esconde Venom, de lo que se alimenta Fisk) es solo explorada en una página y el resto es una historia de viajes en el tiempo sin sentido.
Visualmente Andrews canaliza a Angel Medina con composiciones cargadas e interesantes, llenas de detalle en la anatomía de personajes, que hacen poco por ocultar la carencia de trama.
Amenazan con una tercera parte, a pesar de ser muy fan de Andrews, que espero nunca pase.

Two positives: Andrews’s art has gotten way better, and this book is weiiiiiiiiird. Which has its perks.

But you know how Reign 1 takes way too many cues from The Dark Knight Returns? Well, this one pulls way too much (ie, at all) from The Dark Knight Strikes Again.
