I received a free copy of, Lessons in Love at the Cornish Country Hospital, by Jo Bartlett, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is book four of four in The Cornish Country Hospital series. Wendy Tyler husband cheated on her and got his affair partner Chloe, knocked up. I did not care for Chloe at all, Wendy was lovely though.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this awesome book in the series
have to admit that i had tears in my eyes a couple of times reading this book ... its so emotional...
this seems to be around wendy and her family... her first marriage ended in divorce when she found out her husband mike had been having affairs during their marriage.... she was happily divorced from him now and had started a relationship with the true love of her life....
but her ex was with another girl and had gotten her pregnant. she was called chloe and was very friendly with wendys daughter much to wendys disgust.... could she really be jealous of chloe... it was what it was....
also danni and charlies pregnancy was ongoing and their time was being spent getting ready for the birth... but danni was having doubts not about her relationship with charlie but with her ability to love her own son when he was born after all her own upbringing hadnt been the best....
oh man this was a roller coaster of emotions all throughout ... but the love and support that shines through the friendships and family is lovely to read about... i cant get enough of this series
This is such an awesome series and this was another fantastic addition to it. This time we go through Danni's pregnancy with her, and watch a surprising friendship develop between Wendy and Chloe (Mike's new girlfriend). As usual, there's lots of love and laughter, as well as a few truly difficult and hair-raising moments, all dealt with beautifully with Jo's outstanding writing. My only complaint ... we didn't really find out much about Aiden and Jase's surrogate pregnancy journey! And I'm dying to see those two become parents! Anyway, it was great to catch up with the rest of the gang too and I can't wait for the next installment. Thanks to Netgalley, Boldwood Books and Jo Bartlett for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love this series and this addition to it was no exception. In this one we go through Danis pregnaney with her and watch a surprising friendship come about between Wendy and Chloe (Mikes ex and current partners respectively) As usual there's loads of love, laughter and found family and some dificult situations that are handled with such care and genieness that its hard not to get swept up in and not want to stop reading until the end. In fact, when I got to the end I was upset that it was over and I cant wait til the next book in the series! I hope we get to catch up with Alden and Jase and their surrogate in the next one but no matter who it focuses on, I'll be sure to be reacing it. Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for this eAre in exchange for my review.
I loved this book. I have read all of the Cornish Midwives books and all of the Cornish Country Hospital books, I feel like I know all of the characters personally. I don’t think I could have been as compassionate as Wendy was with Chloe. I couldn’t put this book down and read it while on holiday. It was another of Jo’s books that had me laughing one minute and crying the next!!
I can’t wait for the next instalment in this series and to read what Jo does next.
One of the many things I love about this series is the way individuals I already feel I know fairly well – this time it’s Wendy, who works in housekeeping at the hospital – are allowed to take their turn in the spotlight, while others simply step back a little, their own stories continuing. I really must stress though that every book in this series would be entirely readable as a standalone – quite a difficult thing to achieve, but the author does it so perfectly.
Wendy really went through the mill with her cheating ex-husband Mike, but she’s finally found a happier relationship – a partner she can trust, even consider marrying. But she does have her worries – a few real issues with her body image, and concerns that her teenage daughters are wanting to spend more time with her ex’s pregnant (and considerably younger) girlfriend Chloe than they are with her. Despite her insecurities, always easy to empathise with, she has concerns for Chloe too, particularly knowing Mike’s shortcomings – and when she runs into her at the hospital, there alone and having a particularly difficult time, she doesn’t hesitate to step forward and offer her support.
Life goes on in St Piran’s emergency department, the usual round of people needing help at a low point in their lives, and where Danni is now emergency medicine consultant and the most senior doctor on shift. Treating every patient as an individual and giving them her usual exceptional level of service – along with her equally caring team – she’s now approaching the point when she needs to think of herself for a change, her blood pressure rising as she nears her time to become a mother. And she has particular concerns about the absence of her own support network at the time when she needs it the most.
As you’d expect, there’s much more to the story – the author’s emotional touch is, as always, quite perfect as we become entangled with the complications in the lives of Wendy, Chloe, and Danni herself. There’s a considerable amount of drama – so very well written, and that had me on the edge of my seat – and a fair measure of particularly heartbreaking moments. But although the tears were often not very far away, there are also those lovely moments of lightness and laughter – and the amazing warmth that always features strongly in her lovely writing. The depth of her research is very evident, bringing every scenario and challenging issue to life in a wholly realistic way – and the whole story was a particular page-turner, unputdownable until its especially uplifting ending.
This series is something really special, and this book was full of individuals I really cared about, navigating their way through life’s challenges, and touching me to the heart. And I’d certainly wholeheartedly recommend this book – see if you can stop at just one, if the series is new to you – which had absolutely everything I love about the author’s writing.

I'm a pretty big sucker for a Jo Bartlett novel and although this wasn't my favorite of hers I still found myself easily getting invested in the story and characters. I especially liked that we got to see more of the characters from the previous novels - I love getting to know what happened to characters after I leave their stories. And the author does such a great job of weaving those continuing stories into later books. As for the story here with Wendy and Chloe, I wasn't really sure what to expect solely from the book description but I thought there would be more with them bonding and becoming friends. I completely understood Wendy's feelings that her daughters were abandoning her for Chloe and wished they had at some point realized how their behavior impacted her, but it is clear that they know what an amazing parent she is. This book also has so much going on for Wendy - she's dealing with her ex having a new baby after putting her off from having a third, a new romance that may require her to rethink her view on getting re-married, daughters who have more in common with dad's new girlfriend and wanting to spend all their time with her, body image issues, and becoming the support system for her ex's girlfriend. And yet none of that seems overly dramatic or make you think "how much more can this poor woman handle?" As with all Jo Bartlett books everything is balanced and presented in a way that keeps it in the realm of something that could happen in real life. I also thought the topic of a later-term miscarriage was handled so well and brought about the complexity of losing a child that close to his/her birth. My only complaint is that I'm pretty much over everything with Lucas - he should really take a hint and find a job somewhere very far away.

This series is the fictional account of several of the workers at St. Piran’s Hospital. It focuses specifically on two couples: Gary, a staff nurse, and Wendy, the head of housekeeping; and Danni who works in emergency medicine and her boyfriend Charlie, a children’s book author. Working on the fourth book in this series, Jo Barlett presents a lot of background about the various characters. Sometimes I felt like I had been dropped into the middle of a soap opera; and at other times, I admired Barlett’s handling of characters and situations that are serious.
Wendy had been married to Mike, unquestionably a philandering, narcissistic jerk who was the father of her two young adult girls. Now he is in a relationship with the much younger Chloe. Wendy struggles with doing the right things for her daughters as they form bonds with Chloe who is pregnant. Danni is also pregnant and is carefully cared for medically as an older mom with a first child. Both Gary and Charlie are caring and loving mates, but the women take the stage in this novel.
With relationship and medical issues, there is both trauma and drama for Chloe. Eating disorders affect several characters. Wendy struggles with jealousy over Chloe even though Wendy no longer loves or is attracted to Mike. It hurts that her daughters see Chloe as the fun “mom.” Meanwhile Chloe suffers from a deep seated and unfulfilled desire to be loved.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is a great series with echoes of Jo Bartlett's Cornish Midwife series and a crossover of characters. You can read these as standalone stories but they are better read in order so that you understand the characters' histories. We return to Dannie and Charlie's story in this novel. They are anticipating the birth of their son and looking forward to their future as a family. Dannie has huge anxiety which she tries to deal with. Mindful of her relationship with her Mother, she is afraid that she may be like her Mother and struggle to maintain a strong maternal bond. However, as the story develops, you can see the differences in Dannie and her Mother. Dannie is a warm, empathic person as opposed to her cold, detached parent.
Life at the Hospital is varied and bust but the strong team in A and E support each other and keep their eye on Dannie who is working so hard. Gwen adds lots of humour, as ever, and it is noticeable that Dannie might be lacking her own family closeness, but has a found family in her many friends. Parallel to Dannie's story, you see Chloe's. She too lacks family support but finds it in a surprising place. There are some upsetting aspects ro Chloe's story which many may find too much. However, life goes on for all the characters and you wonder what will happen next.
In short: Family closeness and friendship conquers all. Thanks to the publisher for a copy of the book

My Opinion
This was such a sweet read and I finished it in one sitting. Whilst this is part of a series I have read it as a standalone and I was able to follow along without any issues. Jo Bartlett has written such an emotional book that it may be worth having some tissues near when you read this.
Having enjoyed this one I now feel like I need to go back and get to know the rest of the characters.
I'm totally convinced that this series is getting better and better with every book.
This had me completely hooked from the start and I couldn't put it down until I reached the end.
We have more of Danni's story, and I am always happy to see more of her, but we also have Wendy's story. And Wendy is a rather interesting character too, she has amazing almost grown up children, a nightmare of an ex-husband, her first love back in her life, and she is also dealing with the fact her ex's new partner is pregnant. Her kids keep wanting to spend time with Chloe, and as we progress we get to know Chloe quite well too and I really felt for her.
There are moments of great drama in this story, but equally light relief is as always provided by Gwen. When is that woman getting her own series! I was also happy as there were multiple pregnant ladies in this book, to see cameo's from Jess especially and some of the other midwives and team from Jo Bartlett's previous series making an appearance. Always happy to catch up with old friends.
So many ups and downs throughout the story, and I was definitely gripped. It was a great way to pass most of my flight from the Gambia back to the UK after my holiday. And I already can't wait to read the next book in the series. Jo Bartlett seems to excel at writing these medical based books and I'm eager to read them as long as she keeps writing them.
Returning to the Cornish Country hospital, and to this special corner of Cornwall, is like meeting up again with old friends as we once again enter through the doors of St Piran’s to find all is activity and hustle and bustle. In this story we follow two characters Danni, the A &E doctor, as she meets the challenges which come her way and also we discover more about hospital housekeeper, Wendy, who has lots going on in her personal life, including being a rock of support to Chloe who is her ex-husband’s new partner.
The story draws a complex web highlighting the importance of love in all its forms, whether it be between partners, or between those people who aren’t related, and yet who become as important as family. The author weaves these intricate relationships so well and with such attention to detail that the characters come alive and it becomes easy to have an emotional connection, not just to the story but also to the characters themselves. With a realistic hospital setting also thrown into the mix the story tackles some difficult medical issues but does so in a considerate and sympathetic way which doesn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the story.
With love, loss, friendship and motherhood at its core, Lessons in Love at the Cornish Country Hospital once again shows the absolute strength and overall appeal of these delightful novels.
In the latest instalment in the Cornish Country Hospital series, readers revisit the lives of Wendy, Chloe, and the rest of the gang in this charming Cornish village and the local hospital, St Piran’s. Readers rejoin Wendy as she is getting over her divorce from Mike, but when she runs into his new partner, Chloe, at the hospital for an appointment for her pregnancy, Wendy can’t help but get involved because it seems that Chloe needs some help and since she’s joining the family, Wendy chooses to support her in this difficult time. For readers sensitive about pregnancy and other related topics, they should prepare themselves for some potentially challenging sections of this book (or skip it entirely), but readers will still enjoy this new installment and its themes of family and love -- even the unconditional and unconventional kinds. Wendy and Chloe’s relationship and their individual growth over the course of the novel is charming and incredibly emotional, so readers will really get immersed in the narrative told from their perspectives. For those who want a powerful and emotional new read, this is a great contender because of Jo Bartlett’s incredibly complex characters, engaging plot, and cozy and familiar settings.
Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the advance copy.
“There was not such thing as loving too many people, or being loved by too many people in return.”
This story was the feel good book I didn’t know I needed. It is part of a series, and if it’s possible to read it alone, I would recommend reading the others first. The story has a lot of characters (and their POV), and most of them have a back-story from the previous books. I read this one as a stand alone, and –if it was completely possible– it took me a bit of time to get accustomed to all of them. In this story, destinies cross and meet, but everything turns around one main theme: motherhood (no matter its form). Feelings are particularly well written, and I found the familiarity with some TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy very comforting to me. Without truly realizing it, we go through a lot of feelings but also questions that are told with a lot of tact. The plot twist, if it seems a bit strange at first, brings rhythm and a wave of empathy. As I said, it was my first read from this author, but definitely not the last. I’ll come back to this series, should I need comfort and a great feel good novel.
Thank you Jo Bartlett, Boldwood books and NetGalley for the ARC. My opinions are my own
As usual, it was a decided treat to return to St Piran’s and catch up with some of the gorgeous characters associated with this series. This time, we revisit Wendy, who, having divorced her serial cheating husband, is making a new life with her childhood sweetheart. She’s definitely over her ex but worries that her young adult daughters may be more drawn to her ex’s pregnant girlfriend than her. Wendy’s story has been a joy to follow in the peripheries of previous books. Reconnecting with her childhood boyfriend has brought happiness to her life and helped encourage a new independence. Despite that, she still worries that she’s losing her daughters. I loved Wendy and empathised with her insecurities. The magic of this book comes from the fantastic handling of the writing and the genuine warmth that’s woven through the pages. Of course, like all of Jo’s books, there is an ensemble cast, and many characters overlap from previous books, so we get to catch up with those we have already met. As the synopsis suggests, there’s a bigger story hiding in the pages, creating a difficult situation with ripples spreading to affect the whole group. The story is quite challenging, but the title reminds us that there are Lessons in Love, even though I hadn’t expected to be studying for a degree! Jo Bartlett has created a delightful community of flawed but somehow perfect characters. Their connections are built on love and the understanding that we are all human. The research is thorough, and the warmth of the writing is the glue that holds this special community together. You may need to keep some hankies within reach. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book and the entire series so far.
I think for most people it's human nature to want to help others when we can. Having read all the books in the series this is what I love about the book, not only it's originality with it's mainly hospital setting but I love seeing the helping and hopeful spirit the carers give others in and out of the hospital. This series provides a warm, fuzzy feeling of goodness and a coming together of characters that are there for each other. So many of the characters in this book have been in all of the books and it's great to see an update of their lives in each book. As in each book there is some drama, but you can't have real life without some glitches and things going on. The book deals with love and loss, heartache and happiness, sisterhood and strong family ties and knowing you don't have to be born into a family to have that strong family bond. Recommended and looking forward to the next installment in the series.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
This feels like Casualty, Grey’s Anatomy and Chicago Med all rolled into one. It was bloody brilliant and amazing.
It follows the stories of the workers at St. Piran Hospital. Wendy who has conflicting feelings about her kids’ closeness to her ex-husband’s partner. Danni who is expecting and has unresolved feelings towards her mother. There are also minor characters who made some appearances.
It just felt like watching a medical drama. The descriptions of scenes from the Emergency Department and the cases of the various patients who come into through the doors were top notch.
This was perfectly written. The author captured the vulnerability of the characters and their emotions, actions and interactions were relatable and accurately reflected.
I had an issue trying to catch up with the so many names/ relationships and I think it would help if the previous books in the series are read.
If you love medical dramas and don’t mind reading them on the pages of a book then you will enjoy this.
We're back to check in for another installment at the Cornish Country Hospital! We're happy to be greeted by nurses and doctors who we've met on prior visits, and hear about what's going on in their lives. Aidan is getting ready to become a father, Danni and Charlie are expecting a little boy any day now, and we've got an invite to Esther and Joe's wedding! It's nice to find out that Wendy and Gary are doing well, and that Mike is in a relationship with Chloe, who seems to adore Wendy's girls, which is always a bonus.
So, now that you're up to date, I can tell you that each of the items of note above will lead to much deeper storylines. Some are joyful, some are sad and others scary. But as always, the staff and friends at the hospital band together to support each other. I hope there will be another book in this series!
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
In this the latest episode of The Cornish Country Hospital series there are two main story threads, Danni and Charlie who are expecting their first baby and Wendy and Gary. Wendy's ex, Mike, is now engaged to Chloe, who is only slightly older than their two daughters and is pregnant. Of course the previous characters are all there and their stories brought up to date. This book can be read as a standalone, however you will appreciate it more if you've read the previous books. As usual it is all about love and relationships, but there is also a strong undercurrent of forgiveness. Part of the story covers loss which is very emotional, realistic and is unfortunately part of life. A very warm hearted story set in my favourite part of the world, Cornwall which I'm sure that you'll really enjoy. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
Lessons in Love at the Cornish Country Hospital by the immensely talented Jo Bartlett is the fourth installment in the Cornish Country Hospital series.
This time, the spotlight is on Wendy, who has recently been promoted to Head of Housekeeping at the hospital. She is enjoying her new relationship with Gary after her divorce from Mike. However, she finds herself feeling uncertain as Mike and his new girlfriend, Chloe, have announced they are expecting a baby. Will her daughters choose to embrace Chloe and the new arrival over her?
I love that we get to reconnect with some characters from Jo’s previous series, The Cornish Midwives. Jo's talent for crafting memorable characters continues to flourish! I felt a personal connection to this story, having had a challenging experience with my own stepmother, which has shaped my relationships with my stepchildren and their mothers (two marriages, two sets of stepchildren!). I'm eagerly hoping for another book in this delightful series!
Oh gosh, how to review this moving read? So emotional, with folks and their different need. There’s pregnancy problems, family dramas and more As love, loss, jealousy and grief all cause furore.
Danni is a doctor in A&E She’s also pregnant as readers soon see! Treating patients and staying safe and calm Endeavouring to right and harm.
Wendy works in the hospital, too, She’s worried her daughters prefer their Dad’s partner who’s new. His partner is Chloe and she’s pregnant, too, And only a few years older than her daughters, what a to do!
A story showing assumptions may often be wrong And unlikely folks may get along. It is also about counting your blessings, too, Making sure you appreciating those you love who also love you.
A drama filled story dealing with issues galore As lessons in love the characters explore. For my copy of this book I say thank you As I share with you this, my honest review.
It is always fun joining the characters at the Cornish Country Hospital. These books are full of love, life’s challenges and people being there for each other. This is never truer than in this book when Wendy, whose marriage ended when her husband got Chloe pregnant, is there for Chloe at a time of crisis for her, showing the greatest of empathy for her.
These books really do offer a great feel good factor, and always lift your spirits. The stories always involve many life-affirming and life changing events, told with great empathy and feeling. You almost feel a part of the family reading these books and you can’t help rooting for the characters.
This book, like others in the series, reads well as a standalone book as well as part of the series.
I strongly recommend this heart-warming book to those who like stories with great characterisation, excellent story-telling and want an uplifting reading experience.
1. Pregnant Women 2. Headknocks 3. Engagements/Weddings 4. Sisterhood
Seriously, though. When the pregnant wife walked into the hospital around halfway, I think my brain died. 3 main characters are pregnant. Why not add some more!
Also, less than half the book happens in the hospital! It was so disappointing as that's the literal name of the book. I really would have loved some more day to day hospital scenes.
The good part is that Danni is lovely. She brings a real warmth to the book, which is definitely needed.
Don't be fooled by the cover, there are very dark topics dealt with in this book. Important topics. It's not as bright and cheery as I was expecting it to be.
What I did really love though, was the feeling of sisterhood. Women standing behind other women.
This series is so brilliant and I am flying through it, I no longer finish the book and I am desperate for the next as I am with this one. It's a addition that has added even more love from me for the characters. This one focuses on Wendy and her feelings and relationship with her ex husbands girlfriend who is pregnant with her baby. Wendy understandably has quite strong feelings against Chloe especially because of the close relationship Chloe has with Wendy's daughter's. Danni and Charlie are excitedly awaiting the arrival of their baby and we see all of the much loved characters at some stage in the book. I felt so much drama and emotion was plotted in the story which kept me excited and eager to keep reading too learn the outcome. I find medical and hospital settings interesting and I enjoy reading about the ones in the Cornish Country Hospital A&E (St Piran's).
What a gem Jo Bartlett wrote . One more great book of the series . Danni is working while she is pregnant and she waiting the arrival of her baby boy to complete her life with Charlie . Esther is getting ready to marry Joe . Wendy is happy with Garry but she is jealous of the new pregnant girlfriend of her ex husband Chloe and how much her two daughters prefer to spent time with her than with their own mother . But when Chloe is having trouble with her pregnancy she is the one who will help her . A book about the undying love a mother has for her children and forgiveness . I received this book from netgalley , the author and the publicer as an ARC . Thank you . All thoughts and opinions are my own .
As with all the books in this series, the author creates a relatable medical environment and believable characters in which you invest. Several characters we met in previous stories are featured, but it mainly focuses on Wendy, her family, and Danni. Both stories involve pregnancy and difficult childhoods. Wendy's character develops in a heartwarming and positive way when she confronts her past and puts the feelings and needs of others before hers. Danni's story is equally compelling, and the strength of female relationships and supportive partners is explored well in this story. I like the storytelling, the medical environment, the supportive relationships, and the community, which is authentic and absorbing to read about.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
This was a lovely book, but it does have trigger pints that may affect some people. Wendy has got a new partner since leaving her cheating ex, but he has a younger partner that’s pregnant. Her girls like her and prefer to stay weekends with her instead of their mother. When Chloe (new partner) needs a shoulder to cry on, Wendy is there. It’s a quick read that is full of emotion and sadness, but it has a happy ending that brings people together. The characters are lovely and I’m looking forward to reading the other books in this series. A homely uplifting family 4 star read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for a copy.
Lessons in Love at the Cornish Country Hospital is book #4 in the Cornish Country Hospital series by Jo Bartlett.
This is the first book I’ve read in this series and by this author. I had no trouble reading this as a standalone. This was an emotional book that I was drawn into immediately. I like the supportiveness between characters. It felt real with Wendy’s concerns about her daughters and Chloe. I really enjoyed this book and plan to catch up on this series.
Thank you to the author, Boldwood Books, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Wendy is divorced from Mike and is happy with her new partner but when she hears the news that Mike is to become a father again she cannot help but feel a little bit hurt, not least because his new partner Chloe is much younger, nearer the age of their two daughters. It does not help as the girls are very close to Chloe and Wendy feels she is going to lose them, but when she finds out Chloe has health issues and Mike is acting like his old self, not interested, she feels she has to step in and support the new mum to be I shed quite a few tears over this book but there were some laughs as well. Roll on the next book in the series.
Such an awesome series and another fantastic chance to catch up with the drs at st Pirands. Wendy was back with her foster boyfriend and true love Gary and after decades of her ex Mike cheating on her and gaslighting her and her girls he has a new partner Chloe. He’s up to his old tricks and chance means that Wendy and Chloe meet and bond over circumstances. Wendy realises she is worthy of love. This was a great book in the series. Thank you NetGalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
