3.5 stars 🌟 Nice story, but I was expecting a bit more swashbuckling from this story. My first read by this author. I will probably read the rest of the series at some point.
Liza Maclean is left for dead on a rock in the middle of the sea by her abusive husband. Rescued by the pirate ship, The Blood Reiver, the captain of the ship, Alec Rankin, is willing to help the lady in her plan for revenge. He strikes a bargain to help her for coin and one night in his bed. He and his men are pirates who will fight to the death for coin. When Alec decides to change his life and stay as Captain of the Guard, will Liza, determined to be the Laird of Moy, give up the man who stole her heart. Descriptive sex, violence and a swoon-worthy pirate. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout.
This book was wonderful. Not over the top. Her husband left her to die, now she will get revenge but at what cost? A page Turner, steamy and a love story to follow, along with a mystery. And whilei wait for book 2, I have started the 1st book of rogue of mull where I can findout a little about Ra.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have to admit, I did not love this book as much as most of Jayne's other books.(I am a super-fan of her work.) That said, this is still a nice little book. There is a beautiful lady in distress who is rescued by a dashing pirate when she is left to die on a rock in the sea by her cruel husband. Even worse, he did it so she would quit making her preschool son "soft" by interfering when he was being cruel to the child. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and ripped from her child, so she makes a deal with the devil who rescued her. Half the gold in the castle treasury if he helps her take the castle and kill her husband. He adds an indecent proposal - the gold plus one night in his bed.
We find out as the night progresses that Alec never intended to rape Liza, he just wants to bluster in front of his semi-mutinous crew who feel he has lost his edge as a pirate. However, the night turns steamy as Liza, facing probable death with the impending storming of said castle, figures what the heck, if she is going to die on the morrow, why not find out what it feels like to be bedded by a skilled lover instead of her brute husband. Steamy night of sex ensues.
After the castle has been stormed and the Laird killed, Alec realizes Liza needs help to run the holdings. The high clan-chief will surely turn up seeking reckonings for his laird being killed, there is a mysteriously large amount of gold in the cellar from who-knows where, and the locals are talking bad about their newly widowed lady and her bargain. He leaves his ship, The Blood Reiver, to his first mate and crew and stays on for a while to help Liza.
This is where I thought the story could have been better, romance wise. There is a lot of angst on Liza's part over her actions and she tries to keep Alec at arm's length despite the sizzling physical attraction. I would have loved to see him be more romantic and try to woo her instead of just being her rock and shield, always there waiting for her to notice him. (It is nice, but isn't that how we all ended up married to Mr. Nice Guy who was sure and steady?) There was lots of steamy sex but too little swoon worthy romantic scenes in this book.
To me, this was Alec's story of a sailor being stolen from his mistress (the sea and his ship) and being tamed by a landlubber (queue up the classic song "Brandy" by Looking Glass). He is truly a nice guy and I did love his character. Liza is trying so hard to handle being Laird that I really felt she deserved being lavished with lots of romantic gestures to take her mind off the stress. She gets ravished (consensually, of course) but not lavished.
Even with these weaknesses, this is a darn good story and there is tons of intrigue and political maneuverings to be had. Her sisters are a delight, and I can't wait to read their stories. The secondary characters are all believable and I got pulled into the trials and tribulations of this little keep on Mull. I would have loved for this story to have gone on longer and to be kept in their world for many months instead of the four short ones we are allowed. Alec and Liza are a great couple and their book is high on my recommend list.

An unlikely pairing Alec was introduced into an earlier series of Jayne’s and this is his story. Captain of the pirate ship, The Blood Reiver Alec is disinterested and weary of his life of pillaging. Wanting more but not sure which direction to take he just happens to stumble upon the most extraordinarily beautiful woman left to die on a rock at sea. With her rescue comes a new life for both of them as their lives become intertwined. Liza, once rescued is terrified to find herself aboard a pirate ship. Fearing for her life and wanting revenge on her husband for trying to kill her she makes an outrageous bargain with the Captain. He takes her up on it and adds his own spin to the bargain. Once the deal is sealed this sends them both off on a journey of self discovery. Along the way Liza learns to trust Alec and rely on his word and the help he offers. This story had so much happening in it to keep me intrigued and happily reading along. -From the attraction Alec and Liza both felt for each other as the story evolves. Plus some very steamy scenes -The mystery of the castles wealth -The cruel laird and his treatment of his wife and son -The horrendous fate he bestowed upon his wife -Revenge once she was rescued -The bargain she struck to secure her life and her sons -Dealing with the fallout once Liza had her revenge I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this story. I loved the main characters. The side characters were relatable and believable, showing the good and the bad when needed. When the time comes for Alec and Liza to part ways - will Alec choose to give up the call of the sea and his pirate ways, redeeming himself and winning the lady? Or will the call of the sea win? Great read and start to a new spin off series. Can’t wait to read the next story.
Another great read by Jayne Castel. In this story we have meet Alec in an earlier story. He is the pirate and captain of the Bloody Reiver. He is in a pack with the local Clan Chief with regards to pillaging. Alec has a fierce outside but is really a good person and gentleman inside. He is getting tire of his life as a pirate and is yearning for a change. At this time while out sailing on the ship he spots a figure on a deserted island. As the ship draws closer he sees it is a women and she is tied up. He and some fellow pirates go ashore and rescue her. He discovers that her husband a cruel and devious laird has left her there to die. He takes great strides to protect her from the men on his ship by claiming she is his for the taking. But when in private quarters he explains to her his plan to keep her safe. Here Lady Liza makes a deal with Alec to take her back to the castle to save her son from his cruel father and to kill him and become Laird. He agrees to the plan which upset some of his fellow pirates, Once at the castle and plan in place he decided to stay behind and help her regain the castle and help with her fixing it and coping with her new position. Tensions run high between them. During this Liza discovers just how strong and resilient she is when faced with adversity. And Alec also discovers things about himself. This story is loosely based on a true historical incident but with Jayne’s addition of the pirate it adds a twist. In the book you will find adventure, mystery, adversity, trust issues, family love and love. I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next book.

OK, so I enjoyed the book, however I must say that I had a hard time with the language. There were a lot of words that were just foreign to me - some were available in the dictionary, however with others I was forced to use context clues.
That said, I didn't get lost in that small detail. I enjoyed the strong FMC and found the momma grizzly characterization totally relatable. Everything that Liza did was for the protection of her young son. Even though I wanted to dislike her lack of confidence in herself, I understood her inner turmoil of being a woman in a man's world. A woman was weak, inconsequential, property and couldn't actually be a lord over men, let alone an entire castle.
But for Alec, she would not have found her confidence, her strength, her freedom and an awareness of her body. And yet, she didn't feel the need to be indebted to him, to be thankful to him for rescuing her from that rock that her husband had left her on to die. And although her stubbornness would not allow her to acknowledge her feelings for him, Alec was patient and ready to embrace the new life that he'd chosen for himself.
I thought the author did a decent job of character building, and I felt as though I knew Liza and Alec and therefore understood their decisions. The romance between the two of them was palpable and the author didn't overdo the sex scenes. The book had the right amount of action to reel me in and keep me engaged. While I'm not really sure what to expect in a second book, I would read more books by this author. I'm a fan of her "Bound by Deception" series.
I would like to thank Book Sirens for the advance copy and I leave this review strictly voluntarily. I would definitely have rated the book higher if not for the lack of understanding of the lingo.
Thank you to Book Sirens and Jayne Castel for the ARC.
Plot 3/5 Characters 3/5 Ending 3/5 Interest 3.5/5
Overall 3/5
-The proposal is the worst thing ever. I hated it with every fibre of my being, yes he didn’t actually go through with it but in my own eyes, he still took advantage of her and stared at her almost naked form when he had the chance. The reasoning he gave for even offering this just felt a little ridiculous. There are so many other ways to earn respect from a crew of wild pirates that don’t involve rape. The rest of the book was alright, and the plot itself involving a revenge plan to kill someone but I felt like it was over too fast. I expected the killing to be more difficult, to last longer.
-Going back to the awful proposal, I didn’t really like Alec for. He ended up being alright. I liked him as a love interest but he didn’t really fit the pirate stereotype because he was indeed soft hearted. Liza was interesting as well. She had her reasons and I was fully behind her on it. But then, there’s the actual relationship between the two. I didn’t feel like this book is truly a romance book because I didn’t feel the steps of falling in love. I felt it more on Alec’s side but it still seemed very physical on both sides. I wished there were more romantic scenes rather than physical attraction.
-The romance was concluded but a lot feels unanswered. Yes there will be a sequel, but it follows different characters. I’m not too sure how things will play out. Will I read it? Perhaps if I get an ARC because I like seeing things through. But as a whole, this book wasn’t exactly for me.
A Pirate’s Indecent Proposal was a captivating read that kept me fully engaged and eagerly turning its pages. I received an ARC of this book and I am happy to review it with my own thoughts.
Jayne Castel is a talented storyteller who always delivers vibrant characters that grip your emotions. I loved that Liza’s drive and purpose didn’t alter throughout the book despite falling in love. Her main motivation was doing best by her son, proving she could lead, and creating a better life for herself and those around her. Alec was the perfect love interest for her, as he gave her the space and support she needed to accomplish all she set out for. He didn’t make his love for her a problem she had to work around. Which was really refreshing. Typically, lots of male leads hijack the heroine’s purpose and plans, changing her course to fit their life. It was refreshing to read the opposite in this book. Plus, Alec did everything he wanted for Liza totally by his own choice, without her even asking him.
*Slight Spoilers in this Paragraph* I thoroughly enjoyed that Liza got her revenge, and the author didn’t shy a way from it. So many books have the main characters not deliver the killing blow at the last minute, no matter what terrible things the villain did. It gets pretty old, and happens so much it’s what you tend to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised when the death blow fell successfully.
I highly recommend A Pirate’s Indecent Proposal, as a griping story full of emotion and second chances. I eagerly await the next book in the book focusing on Liza’s sister. I can’t wait to see how her story unfolds!
Thank you always to Jayne Castel for sharing her books as Arcs to Booksprout for us eager readers ready to devour her next book release but can’t wait until the release date for our preordered copies for our fix of historical hunky highlanders and islanders!
The Pirate’s Indecent Proposal is a spin on one of my favourite historical tales about an evil earl who decided to off his wife by leaving her standard on an outcrop of rock to die; only he didn’t expect her to be rescued and get her revenge. Jayne Castel has put a pirate spin on this story to create a riveting historical romance full of her gorgeous, descriptive writing style, a plot packed full of twists and richly designed characters who you fall in love for their vibrant souls, realistic flaws and relatable character journeys that will have you on the edge of your seat.
Strong women are my cup of tea! Jayne isn’t afraid to capture sassy spirits in her characters in all eras of history. Pushed to the edge and desperate to save her son from his malicious father, Liza discovers her inner strength and power in the face of adversity; she is not afraid to strike a bargain to kill her husband in the fight to survive and protect her young son. I do love a blood thirsty lass!
Alec’s reputation of being a bloodthirsty and ruthless pirate walked a bit of a fine line with his shenanigans and misdirection. My heart was in my throat for a while. Under his wicked, bad-boy pirate image lies an honourable protector and undiscovered cinnamon roll just waiting for the right lady to bring out the best in him. In love he finds a place to belong in a life he’s been adrift in since childhood which was so heartwarmning and turned my heart into a puddle.
A historical romance retelling an actual historical event with flare and a pirate twist that allows two souls to find love and themselves in an expected twist of fate. Readers who love historical romance set in the wilds of Scotland need to have Jayne Castel on their TBR! She will send you on a fantastic adventure full of laughter tears and make you fall madly in love with her couple of the moment like Alec and Liza from The Pirate’s Indecent Proposal.
When her husband leaves her tied up on a rocky outcrop at sea, Liza is supposed to be left for dead. Instead, days later a pirate ship comes upon her, and she has an offer for them. If they'll take and her husband's life, she'll give them half of whatever's in their stronghold.
Alec, the pirate captain, is losing the respect of his men. He's forged alliances with local lairds, and they've been looting less than usual. He needs to do something reckless, something cruel to get their support back. So he takes Liza's offer, and adds a stipulation - she needs to spend the night with him first.
After reading the Sheehallion series, I was curious to see Jayne Castel's other works, and I can never go wrong with a good pirate story. While we abandon the ship, and instead follow Liza trying to make sure her son is protected, and to prove that she can run the keep, the adventure doesn't stop there.
A pirate turned captain of the guard, Alec and Liza have to fight their attraction to each other. Liza's reasoning is maintaining the respect of those in her hold, who look at her as the pirate's wench. To fall back into Alec's arms could be disastrous, even if she feels the pull to be with him.
Some of the language, while accurate for the time and place, can be hard to read. It doesn't run as smoothly as modern English would. Even so, I enjoyed the story, and I'm excited to see what happens with Liza's two sisters in following books!
Thank you to BookSirens and the publishers for the ARC! I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
This wasn't like “bad”, there were a few parts I enjoyed however this book draaaaaged. I would say the romance is secondary to the plot regarding our FMC, Liza, and her journey into her new position of power. Which would have been great if it didn't feel like it was all filler stuff. It was a lot of repeating internalized thoughts as well as drawn out scenes to fill space. I was getting bored by the time I was 50% of the way into the book and to finish getting through it felt like a chore 😔. I did like how she focused on her son more than anything and prioritized him over any man. Period. And the few spice scenes we get are pretty well written. The dialogue was difficult to get through with the written accent like “ye” and “yer” it just felt overdone and unnecessary for immersion. I had also hoped for a tale of a classic swashbuckling pirate, but that's not what we get. Hardly any of the book takes place on the ship and our “pirate” is hardly a pirate at all.
All in all this had potential but left me feeling unsatisfied.

The Pirate’s Indecent Proposal is set in the isle of Mull,Scotland, the year 1318, and follows the plight of Liza Maclean, who on this day has been left on a rock to die in the middle of the Loch of Buie by her brutish murderous husband, the Laird of Moy. After three days trussed and alone, save for the sea birds as company Liza is finally saved by of all things a ship full of pirates and most specifically by Alec Rankin, who listens to her story and agrees to assist her in reuniting with her son Craeg, and the dispatching of her husband… for a price of course. Jayne Castel never fails to write distinctive, memorable characters in her books. I can promise you will get a strong female protagonist bold and colourful with strength of heart, a strong sense of self and vulnerability buried deep down who knows her mind, gorgeous male pirates with buckets of flaws but love as deep as the turbulent North Sea, and a romance story to keep you on the edge. Jayne's Castel writing is always enthralling and offers a steamy historical romance that did not fail to engage the reader.
Very well written, full of action, drama, violence, villains, betrayal, love , family, twists and suspense. Alec is a captain of his own pirate ship. Liza is the wife of an abusive laird. He tries to kill her bu tying her up and leaving her on a rock to die. Alec finds her and brings on board the ship. After giving her a chance to explain why she was left to die there. She he tells him all about what her husband did to her and their son over the years. Alec offers to help but at a cost to her. She agrees and wants her husband dead for all things he has done and things he hasn't. They plan to attack the castle and she offers him half of what her husband's coin is hidden in the cellar storeroom. Has lots of action thru out this book. Will keep you on the edge of your seat. These characters are all complex and multidimensional. A masterful strong hero and heroine that bump heads and yet fall in love with each other. Would recommend this story strongly and can't wait for the next one.
I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.
If you enjoy Scottish Highlanders and swashbuckling pirate stories then you will enjoy this story as much as I did.
Trigger warning, there is mention of abuse towards Liza, the main female character. Her husband has always treated her poorly which culminates in him leaving her to die on a rock outcrop in the sea.
Alec, a notorious pirate happens upon her and rescues her. She has to get back to her home because her son is there, and she wants revenge on her husband. She does a deal with Alec, he will kill her husband, and take back her home for her. The indecent proposal is for doing all that for her, Liza must spend one night with him. She agrees because she believes she has no other choice.
What follows is an all-action story with plenty of fighting, possible mutiny, and pillaging of villages. There are some steamy bedroom scenes too, so if you like a sweet romance you might want to jump past those pages.
I fully immersed myself in Liza's story and loved every minute of it.

Captivating writing, and well crafted characters, offers up a steamy historical romance that did not fail to immerse this reader in a timeless and emotional story. HEA.

As always, this author doesn’t disappoint. This story is fast-paced, full of danger, surprises and steam. Liza’s husband separated her from her son and left her to die. Fate stepped in and Alec and his band of pirates came to her rescue. Desiring revenge above all else, Liza made a deal with Alec which entailed so much more than him killing her husband. Fast forward and Liza has declared herself Laird and Alec Captain of the Guard. Together they weather suspicions, betrayals, attacks, and personal threats. There are visits from clan chiefs and family members, encounters with Ghost Raiders, interupted celebrations and so much more. This story will keep you on your toes, give you a pirate to admire and ogle and a heroine filled with doubts and determination. This is a great start for this new series!.

An Epic Pirate Romance: Let me just say I have loved pirate romance stories for many years and it's hard now a days to find a good one. Not only did this intriguing cover catch my eye but this pirate tale captured my attention from the first page. Hold on to your hats matey. Alec and Liza turned this into one heck of a story I truly enjoyed from the horrifying beginning to the ultra-terrifying ending before these two intriguing characters finally admit their love for each other. The cast of characters, especially the pirate crew added much to the happy ending. 🥵 Ladies Fan needed for chapters 9 and 10 🙋♀️I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest thoughts and opinion.
Jayne Castel continues her mastery with words, knowledge of Scottish history, story telling, characters and plot with The Pirate's Indecent Proposal. Every word should be read as it adds so much to the story. In this story, Liza Maclean is tied up and left on a rock to eventually be found by the pirate, Alec Rankin. She makes a deal with the pirate to save her son from his cruel father. This starts their journey. Can he stop being a pirate to find love on a small island? Can she be reunited with her son and get revenge against her husband?
I highly enjoyed this book and can not wait for the second one in this series.

I LOVED this book! I really love a strong heroine and a morally Grey hero who gets a second chance, so this book was right up my alley. I think the slow burn of this relationship really made the love story that much more powerful - they both really had to work for it and they both really had to want to bend for each other! I loved seeing familiar characters, and also meeting new ones; this story got me so excited for the rest of the series! I read the whole book in one sitting, so definitely a page turner!.
