I am so happy to have gotten a chance to read the follow up to the first Paisley Mott book - ever since I read it, I've been impatiently waiting for the sequel.

This book was adventurous, ambitious, and extremely enticing. Paisley's character is relatable as hell and she wraps us into the story from the get go… before she even knows where the story will take her.

We have a small town setting, where close knit neighbors will always look after their own before the outsider. We have paranormal curiosities (of course). We have the love of a big brother, the power of friendship and the desire to save these young, mystery girls who have been disappearing without a trace. The relationships are beautiful, the horror will keep you firmly on the edge of your seat and the underlying plot will have you guessing throughout the entire book.

This book was wild. Every page kept me pulled into the story. I didn't want to put it down. At some points you're thinking, is this maybe TOO ambitious? Put that thought into your back pocket and be patient because the end is so tidy and satisfying… but definitely leaves you wanting more. Which means we can start bugging Kalvin about the third book any time now 😉

Such a pleasure to be back with Paisley on a new adventure!

This one is darker and more chilling than the first book, In The Hills Above the Gristmill, but absolutely worth it. I also appreciated that the trauma the characters experience is addressed and their non-linear healing is taken into consideration.

Highly recommend if you enjoy paranormal mysteries, small town vibes, and found family.

I did enjoy this book, but not as much as I enjoyed the first book (In The Hills Above The Gristmill). There were some pretty awesome, gruesome scenes that I enjoyed, but overall, this book went in a direction that I wasn't the biggest fan of it (can't say what exactly because of spoilers). I also wasn't the biggest fan of some of the characters introduced in this entry. I still enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who enjoyed book 1. It definitely seems like I have the unpopular opinion here lol everyone I know that has read this book has loved it, so go check it out!

I will start off by saying that some books go for being dark but force it without any meaning or feeling. This book has substance and builds the characters where the dark writing is enhanced since you become so engrossed with every page from the amazing opening that sucks you in and, like a pit bull, never lets go.

The book clocks in at nearly 500 pages, but it flies by, and the chapters are short and well organized, so you can read in small spurts if you read that way.

Paisley Mott's story begins in the book 'In the Hills Above The Gristmill', which you need to read first to get the full scope of the story. Paisley is well developed from all angles, as is the large cast that Ellis effortlessly weaves through with ease.

I never felt lost in what was happening, and my jaw dropped at many scenes, which is NOT easily done.

Paisley is back! I'd heard this one was going to be darker, and that was not a wrong statement...EEK. Starting with a vivid scene that the likes of King would envy, this one proceeded unpredictably. A refreshing horror read, to be sure.

Paisley, recovering from her last adventure hears from two teenage podcasters about mysterious events in Howling Ivy, they send her a tape with what may be a ghost girl speaking at the end of one of their podcasts... one of the boys has a personal reason for seeking help. A dark event haunts him.

Hyacinth tries to dissuade her at first, but as any best friend who knows what's important to their bestie, relents.

Since this is book 2, please grab the first one (IN THE HILLS ABOVE THE GRISTMILL) before you read so you don't spoil some of those events!

If there is one thing you don't need to fear about in this novel, is that it sits at the same exemplary level as its predecessor. With sharp writing style that moves the story along seamlessly, Kavlin Ellis allows readers to dive back into the world of Paisley Mott with ease. And though it honours the first book in ways of callbacks and similar pacing, In the Grave Where the Bones are Still Wet approaches new topics, new themes, and enters a bleak territory that not many novels broach.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting back into reading about Paisley. She's a great character who is both a badass and also a kind person who is always looking out for others before herself. It really shows in this installment. She throws herself head-first into another mystery, finding that it has so much more to it than she initially believed. It's clear from her actions that she learned from her previous experience; she takes different precautions to keep others and herself safe. Paisley is an admirable character.

Ellis shows his skill as an author with a broad range of characters, each standing off the page as three-dimensional people the reader can imagine having a conversation with. They're well placed in a story with impeccable pacing and top-tier action. This book will make you sick to your stomach, it will make you laugh out loud, it will make chills runs down your spine, and it'll leave you itching for the next one in the series.

✨ “That’s the thing about trauma. It’s like a mask you sometimes forget you’re wearing because the only person it’s fooling is you.” ✨

Kalvin Ellis does it again in In the Grave Where the Bones Are Still Wet—a thrilling, spine-chilling dive into grief and the hidden corners of our minds. 🌙

After falling in love with Above the Hill in the Gristmill, I couldn’t wait to follow Paisley Mott and Hyacinth Bloom as they continue to navigate the eerie and supernatural. These two women are unapologetically badass, and Kalvin truly knows how to create characters that other women can look up to and aspire to be. 💪💫

The twists in this book had me questioning everything, and just when I thought I knew what was coming, Kalvin knocked me off my feet. If you’re into gripping stories full of mystery, suspense, and unexpected turns, In the Grave Where the Bones Are Still Wet is a must-read. 🔮🖤

Wow! Phenomenally gripping read, carrying on from In The Hills Above The Gristmill.

In this second book, we meet many new characters, some we love, some we hate. We follow Paisley into a new town, Howling Ivy, with a mystery that is so gripping, you won't want to put the book down!

I found some parts hard to read regarding children, but the book does come with a page dedicated to trigger warnings, so I knew what to expect.

So much is packed into this book and there isn't a single part of it I didn't love. I was able to create a clear picture in my head and I'm so excited to see where the story continues!
Definitely one of my top reads of the year so far!

Paisley did not disappoint in any way.
There was a little bit of gore that the author told me I could skip- his website has the chapters outlined so you can avoid if you want. But so much of this story depends on those details, and even if you can’t stand it the details are spared and the story is completely full. There are gravediggers, highly researched details on almost everything,
Ghosts, a huge mystery, some surprises that were not anticipated- great friendships and real family and found family.
Liked this action filled, mystery ridden, spookily written and highly anticipated sequel.
Definitely recommend book 1 first, but then dive in!!

This is book two in the Paisley Mott series, and it's intense from start to finish. While you get the Paisley you know and love from the first story, this book is very different. Darker, bloodier, more paranormal. You're introduced to a new town, and new characters-so many I loved- a new mystery and a whole lot of trauma. This book does not shy away from the lasting impact that the events of the first have on our main girl and her newly found family. Don't worry though there's still plenty of humor and pop culture references to lighten the mood. I can't really say much more for fear of spoiling, but if you haven't read these- what are you waiting for?!

“… I thought this was ghost stuff, not murder suff… though one usually leads to the other.” In the Grave Where the Bones Are Still Wet: Paisley Mott Book 2 by Kalvin Ellis

Paisley Mott is BACK!

I just need to start off by, there are SO many amazing parts of this novel, quotes that will forever be engraved in my brain and it was extremely difficult to pick just one.

Where to start with this novel. Mott is out here doing very much Mott things. She is pulled into every direction of where she shouldn’t be. Paranormal, murder, thrill… this novel kept pulling me in and it was beyond difficult to put it down. From fantastic character development, relationships, creative plot filled with twists and turns, expect the unexpected.

… I can’t wait for the next adventure of Paisley, ‘Devourer of Light’ Mott.

Ellis has done it again! Book 2 was MORE than I'd hoped for and well worth the wait. This book was filled with even more suspense, intrigue, and horror than the first Paisley Mott book. I especially appreciated the character development in this one, so many great characters (good and bad) that you get to know authentically.

More Paisley Mott please!!

At any point during this book did I know where the next chapter would take me. I mean that in the best possible way. The depth of the characters makes me think they could only be based on real people. In turn, giving such a powerful and personal feel. I loved it so much. I highly recommend!

Great work from Kalvin! It's relatively easy to tell one story but telling two is a trick and this follow up novel builds on the character and world he showed us in the first and, if anything, exceeds it. I eagerly await future novels.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 to In The Grave Where The Bones Are Still Wet by Kalvin Ellis.

Move over Silence of the Lambs, there's a new kid in town. Starting with a epic car crash before heading into a investigative narrative that twists and turns like the coils of a snake Kalvin Ellis has written a spectacular sequel for his character Paisley Mott. Yes, Paisley is back, recovering from the events of the first novel and looking for her next case. Something small. Something less dangerous. . .she doesn't find that.

An investigation into the voice of a podcasters dead sister uncovers a brutal string of disappearances and murders in the town of Howling Ivy. Kalvin showcases his talent for keeping the reader engaged and guessing. There's never a point in the narrative where I felt I was sure who was behind the evil within this book that I suspected everyone. Kalvin weaves a complicated web here, much more than what was featured in Paisley's previous story. It's epic, grand story telling at its finest.
