Summer of Change: Elizabeth's Story

Rate this book
"I’ve always had thoughts of what it would be like to live in a world where magic really did exist, where wizards, fairies and dragons lived in harmony. Imagine what it would be like to know that kind of magic existed. Of course, I figure if wizards, fairies and dragons did exist there would have to be dark magic, too, and witches, vampires and werewolves. I have always thought that one could not exist without the other. I want to believe that they all still exist in our world, hidden from the eyes of humans, because of what we are." It's 1969 and 17 year old Elizabeth is looking forward to her last summer before starting her senior year. During a trip to Wheaton Plaza she finds a book about the town where her father grew up. The author had written that there were vampires living amongst them. When Elizabeth meets a handsome young man who agrees to help her research vampires she doesn't know her life is about to change forever. She starts having dreams about the house, dreams so vivid they haunt her. Not long after, a stranger contacts her and tells her he can explain the dreams she has been having about the house. When she agrees to meet him she finds herself thrown into a world where magic and vampires do exist. Elizabeth finds she must join forces with this stranger not only to keep her family safe, but to keep this man and herself safe as well.

While at a bookstore, Elizabeth spots a book about vampire. Not typically a topic that would interest her, but when she sees that it takes place in the town that her father grew up in and is said to be a true story, she’s intrigued. Could there really be vampires living among humans in a town near her? She decides to not only buy the book, but to do some research of her own.

While at the town pool, Elizabeth meets a boy who’s new to the town. He’s strikingly handsome and seems to be interested in Elizabeth. They hit it off right away and become instantly inseparable. When she tells him about the book she bought, he too is intrigued by the vampire story. He agrees to help her find information on it and to see if vampires do indeed live among the humans. But their detective work has ruffled some feathers. She learns that some people aren’t happy about their research and they find themselves in some trouble.

What will Elizabeth find out about the town her father grew up in? Could vampires really live among humans? And will Elizabeth’s curiosity get her into more trouble than it’s worth? Come with Elizabeth as she goes in search of some answers and reveals much more than she bargained for!

A good around story set in the late sixties.
The characters are easy.to visualise as they are well described. The story starts a bit slow but gathers pace as it progresses.
It's a book suitable for all ages as there are no sex scenes.
I liked that the author did some research into what a half vampire is called.

A tale of vampires and young love. Set in the 1960's, although this isn't obvious from the story, it follows the characters over the course of the summer when things change for Elizabeth.

Summer of Change: Elizabeth's story
By Sharon Coady

I give this book 4 stars

This book will keep an adult interested, but that's appropriate for their teen to read too which is a nice option as it doesn't contain sexual scenes.

The author had written that there were vampires living amongst them. My thoughts...

The story is has a lot of detail in regards to Elizabeth's life, at home, school and socialising with her friends during the summer so you get to visualise the characters in the book.

One sentence did make me smile, when Elizabeth mentions the new skimpy style swimming apparel - "bikinis". I live near the beach and now bikinis are so skimpy I bet the ones that were around in '69 covered a lot more, It was refreshing to read a story where the teens are more reserved, when children were more polite and respectful.

Ms Coady has even included her grandmothers fried chicken recipe at the back of the book, which I thought was a nice touch.

Overall the story was a bit slow paced at first, but got more interesting once Elizabeth starts researching the vampires.

The characters are well described, but I also felt there was a few parts that were not explained, like why the humans were involved with Victor.

I am a fan of vampire stories... Having watched / read Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire, and of course Twilight (yep I'm a twihard granny!) and loads more since then!

And I had not heard of half born vampires being named "Goglave's" or "Vampirdzii" before so I learnt something new, and according to some legends, a vampire may engage in sex with his former wife, which often led to pregnancy. In fact, this belief may have provided a convenient explanation as to why a widow, who was supposed to be celibate, became pregnant. The resulting child was called a gloglave (pl. glog) in Bulgarian or vampirdzii in Turkish. Rather than being ostracized, the child was considered a hero who had powers to slay a vampire.

See reading vampire books is educational!

And maybe I will have a go at the recipe too...
