Mae is up to her sleuthing shenanigans again. This time, she's trying the slopes! When Cyril Downing is seen arguing with his promotional company, then winds up dead, it's game on for Mae and the Laundry Club ladies to piece the clues together to find the killer before someone else winds up meeting their maker. From the bunny slopes to snowmobile chases the thrills never end! I loved this cozy due to it's small town charm to characters you learn to know personally. This has it all and leaves you wanting more!
Normal, Kentucky, is hosting an Olympic ski trails event. The town hopes this event will help bring tourism to the area during the off-season. The ski celebrities bring in not only fans but also drama and rivalry, which results in a dead body. Mae and the laundry club ladies are once again right in the middle of the investigation.
This is a fun wintery storyline that you will want to curl up with a cozy blanket and favorite beverage and lose yourself in. The mystery is full of twists, turns, and surprises. I did not figure out who the killer was or why until the end. The characters are your best southern girlfriends, you can't wait to catch up with all the drama and gossip they have to tell you. Normal, Kentucky and Happy Trails Campground is a great setting you will want to visit over and over.
All thoughts and opinions are my own and have not been influenced by anyone.
Snowcaps, Skiing, & Sabotage is another entertaining installment in Kappes' camper and criminals cozy mystery series. Normal is hosting ski trials which has everyone excited especially Mae and the Laundry Club ladies. The citizens of Normal are thrilled about the trials and bringing business to the local economy. However things take a dark turn when one of the competitive skiers is found dead. Mae and the Laundry Club need to solve this case and fast before this event brings the wrong kind of publicity to Normal and especially Mae's campground.
Kappes does a great job at setting a great winter time read. I love that Normal is so inviting to the reader, and having a winter event is the perfect setting for this time of year. I also loved seeing all of my favorite characters back in action especially Dottie. The book's mystery is well done with enough twists and turns to keep the reader's interest. Overall Snowcaps, Skiing, & Sabotage proved to be a great read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to reading Mae's next adventure.
Received a copy of Snowcaps, Skiing, & Sabotage from the author.
Once again Mae is in the middle of a mystery. Hank really doesn't like her getting involved, but she just can't help it. When a professional skier, who is staying at the campground, turns up dead in her cabin, Mae knows she has to investigate the death. There are plenty of suspects who have good reason to want the man dead. The trouble is, they have alibis. Who could have done this? She is running out of suspects and now she is in danger. This time, it is Hank to the rescue. Mae and Hank also get to babysit their twin nephews. Fun times.
The Olympic Ski Trials are taking place in Normal, Kentucky and there is tension in the air when one of the competitors is murdered. Mae, Hank and the Laundry Club Ladies are on the case! The Campers and Criminals books are always an enjoyable read. I highly recommend this series and suggest that they be read in order.
This takes place in Daniel Boone National Park. The murder weapon was unusual, which was fun. I liked the winter sport part of the story. I don't read many books about skiing. The rest of the mystery was interesting too. I liked how it all came together in the end.
What does the Olympic trials bring to Normal? A murder mystery for the Laundry Club Ladies. Don’t miss out own this great southern cozy mystery. You will not be disappointed.
Another exciting adventure with Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies. With this gang, you never know what they will get into, but you can always count on being entertained. Loved it!
This one almost lost a lot of points. Why? Hank. That's why. Hank slathers his pot roast with ketchup and then says it's the best ever. First off, what kind of monster puts ketchup on pot roast. Second, if it's the best ever then why are you drowning it in ketchup, Hank? Lastly, who hurt you Hank?
Okay but really I love that this series is really a bunch of stand alone books. Like will you be lost reading this and feel like you're missing out on something because you don't know the characters? I don't think so. Would you understand some more if you read at least book 1? Absolutely (and I highly recommend you do now before it gets turned into a show)!
I love visiting Normal, Kentucky in winter! The Laundry Club Ladies, the winter events, and the pine scent I miss so much are but a few of what/ who I must see! Mae West and her husband, Park Ranger Hank Sharp, are still newlyweds over a year after their wedding. Mae, the owner of Happy Trails Campground, and Dottie, her campground manager and best friend are always busy. Running Happy Trails is less taxing in the winter, but murders are year-round. They and their best friends, the Laundry Club Ladies, are well known for scratching their curiosity itch when bodies are found. Especially if one of their own is accused of it.
For the first time ever, Normal was chosen as the location of Southeast Olympic ski trials. To build tourism year-round requires imagination, and the small businesses benefit tremendously from it. We first see Mae and young children in ski lessons. Mae realized, in front of the line of children, that she could actually get hurt on this wicked hill! After a painful, hilarious attempt on the bunny slope, where she did better than I could, she was sent to help with another festival event.
A long-time but troubled skier, Cyril, was very well known and rumored to be a front runner. Dottie showed Mae who he is and told her he was one of their guests in a bungalow at the campground. Abby, one of the Laundry Club Ladies and a social media expert who does amazing things with the web site and social media of Happy Trails, wanted to get a good photo of Mae and Cyril. He heard good things about Happy Trails, enjoys being there, and agreed to let Abby take photos of them. Waldo Willy, the local newspaper reporter, recorded the event for an article. In a few short moments, Waldo also recorded a bigger scoop – an unpleasant disagreement between Cyril and his main sponsor, Jamie.
Hours later, Mae was out walking the dogs when Chester howled so loud that Dottie heard and drove over. They followed the hound’s nose and found Cyril in the snow. It looked as if he had too much to drink and frozen to death. The sheriff and coroner arrived in minutes. The coroner thought Cyril had been poisoned. It sounded at first as if Sheriff Al wanted Mae’s help. If she’s going to snoop, why not, as Mae has brought many excellent leads in the past? Her belief was, “We were on the case, and whoever did this should be worried.” We, of course, included the other Laundry Club Ladies.
Cyril was poisoned by a plant growing locally in the Daniel Boone National Forest. The doll’s eye plant is not a popular cause of death, as it has to be handled by someone with extensive experience with flora. The sheriff does not want her snooping in the case. At all. With a high-profile victim, it had to be handled by the book. That never stopped Mae before!
This was quite a challenge to solve, and I admit that I couldn’t determine whodunit. There were a couple red herrings and shocking twists. Mae’s adopted mother, Mary Elizabeth, became an unwilling participant, and seeing Mama confront the killer gives insight into mama bears protecting their cubs! I was very surprised at who really killed Cyril and why. This cozy mystery shines a light on all the things we enjoy this series for: Sassy, witty, intelligent sleuths, well-written Southern cozy mysteries, romance, and the companionship of close women friends. I highly recommend it!
From a thankful heart: I reviewed an ARC of this novel, and this is my honest review.

Review:
The characters are well rounded and well developed. Normal, Kentucky, is hosting the Southeast Olympic ski trials and everyone is very excited. Everyone is enjoying the competition and are rooting for their favorite. When one of the competitive skiers is found dead Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies will have to find the culprit.
The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The mystery is well plotted and not easily solved. You will need your thinking caps to figure this one out.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. For Mae and her friends, detective work is never done.
This is such a fun series. It an always puts me in the mood to go camping or go for a hike in the mountains. In fact, I ended up buying an RV Christmas ornament that I looked at while reading this book. Makes me feel like I’m right there with Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies. Here’s the link to that RV ornament:
Mae put herself in a dangerous predicament… again. She saw someone tampering with someone else’s skis and what does she do? Ya, she yells to ask what they’re doing. The person runs to their snow mobile and zooms off. That’s fine, right? Well, Mae decided to chase after them. How? Well, she jumps on one of the random rental snowmobiles and begins chasing the culprit. The guy in charge of the rentals was yelling and telling Mae she needs to sign the waiver. Oh and she also needs to pay. She doesn’t stop. She speeds after the ski tamperer screaming for them to stop. She turns too quickly and the snowmobile flips over throwing her off. Geesh! My question is what would she do if she’d caught the person?? She didn’t have a weapon. So irresponsible of her, but not surprising coming from Mae the Daredevil.
So that’s just one of the action-packed events from this book. There’s also a poisoning. And I can’t forget the two sweet dogs - stars in their own right.
And don’t forget to keep turning pages even after the story has ended, because there are always recipes for those of you camping and also camping hacks. In this read the recipes are “S’mores hot cocoa” and “Foil wrapped winter veggies” that you can put together out in the wild woods. There are also 6 camping hacks and instructions on how to make DIY portable hand warmers!
Book 40 will not be released until April 29, 2025. It is called “Cliffs, Clues, & Conspiracies.”
I’m going to start a new series. It is by Kathi Daley and I know it’ll be good because I’ve read a couple of Daley’s other series’s which were Inn at Holiday Bay and Gooseberry Bay. This new one is from A Zoe Donovan Mystery series. Book 1 of 36 is “Halloween Hijinks.” So it looks like I’ll be busy for the next month while I get through all 36 books!
See you in my next review. Deuces to your cabooses! ~ themoodyredhead ✨🦋✨
Snowcaps, Skiing, & Sabotage is the 39th book in the Camper and Criminals Cozy Mystery series by bestselling author Tonya Kappes.
In this wintery installment, the Southeast Olympic ski trials bring all sorts of excitement to Normal, Kentucky. Campground owner Mae West finds herself playing hostess to hotshot athletes, PR gurus, and skiing enthusiasts.
Of course, Normal, KY is never just normal. Mae barely has time to hit the slopes in her cute new snowsuit and bedazzled earmuffs before she ends up mixed up in a mystery she can't help but try and solve.
Things get pretty intense as suspects pile up, and Mae ends up in an avalanche of action. Fortunately, Dottie and the Laundry Club Ladies are willing to ski jump into the case feet first and help Mae gather clues, make murder boards, and eat chocolate chip muffins.
Things wrap up in a satisfying way and the whole thing is capped off with a couple of fun winter recipes and camping tips.
I'm really glad I read Snowcaps, Skiing, & Sabotage. It was wonderful to go on another madcap adventure with Mae and the gang.
The best part about the Camper and Criminals Cozy Mystery series is the feeling you get when you sink into the story and find yourself surrounded by characters you want to spend time with.
The sweet and sassy characters in this series bring heart and humor to every story and make Happy Trails Campground feel like the place to be when you want a cozy getaway.
I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series.
I would recommend this book and the rest of the Camper and Criminals Cozy Mystery Series to anyone who likes lighthearted mysteries and feel-good stories with a dash of heart, humor, and homicide. Reading the books in order is always an excellent option, but you can jump in at any point in this series and have fun since each story has a stand-alone mystery that gets solved and a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Thanks to the publisher for the chance to see an advanced reading copy of this book. My review is voluntary. All opinions are my own.
I just adore this series and the unforgettable cast of characters that make it so special. This book might be one of my favorites. I loved the storyline on this one.
The Southeast Olympic ski trials are taking place in Normal. Everyone in town is excited about the events. Visitors have poured into their small town, which is, of course, good for everyone's business. When one of the competitors is found dead at the campground, a lot of things come to light about the world of competitive skiing including sabotage, rivalries and old grudges. However, Mae and the ladies have to wonder if this enough to cause someone to commit a murder.
When Mae and the Laundry Club ladies start their investigation, they realize that the pool of suspects will be large. Never fear though, these ladies are like a dog with a bone when they start working on an investigation. There was a particularly interesting scene with Mae and a snowmobile. This woman is fearless. Her husband fears she may be a little too fearless at times. There was also a funny babysitting scene which had me in stitches as I imagined this scene in my mind.
This is another great mystery in this series. Even if you are not cozy mystery lover, you will enjoy this book and this series. The mystery is not easily solvable and has many complex, moving parts. The characters in this book will cause you to chuckle at times, but do not discount their abilities to solve a mystery. They may be funny and their clothes may be interesting, but these ladies are sharp and inquisitive, as well as observant. I feel as if I know them personally when I visit Normal every time I read one of these books. This another one in the winner column.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Snowcaps, Skiing, and Sabotage is the 39th book in the Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery series, but it’s as fresh and exciting as all the previous books. Reading Snowcaps, Skiing, and Sabotage is like coming back home to Normal, Kentucky and hanging out with all my friends. I love the familiarity of the characters, the hominess of the various locations throughout the book, and the comfort of knowing Mae, Hank, and the Laundry Club Ladies are keeping everyone safe.
The town of Normal is buzzing with winter activity. The snow is falling and the Olympic Trials are being held locally. The old distillery has been transformed into ski slopes, a lodge, and other buildings. Well-known skiers have infiltrated town, filling up the lodging including some bungalows in Happy Trails Campground. When one the stars is found frozen to death, Mae and the the rest of the Laundry Club Ladies find themselves in the middle of another murder investigation.
The book was full of twists, turns, red herrings, and shifts in direction. The mystery would start out going one direction, then completely shift a new way. There are several viable suspects since it appears the victim wasn't very well liked. I was kept guessing until the very end. I loved how the loose threads quickly and methodically tied right up at the end.
As with the rest of the books in the series, the mystery isn't the only thing going on in the book. Tonya Kappes did a terrific job weaving the main storyline and several smaller ones together. The characters are wonderfully crafted, realistically written, and I feel like I'm coming home to Normal with every book in the series.
I love this series, and this was the perfect after Christmas read. I wanted winter without the holiday and book 39 in the Camper and Criminals mystery series delivered.
It’s snowy and oh so cold in Normal, Kentucky, but everyone is excited because the small town is playing host to the Southeast Olympic ski trials for the first time. Elite athletes and sponsors are in town, some of them even staying at Happy Trails Campground. But everything isn’t rosy as there are whispers of sabotage and broken equipment and then, one of the competitive skiers is found dead on Mae’s campground.
Never one to leave a mystery alone, Mae and her Laundry Club gals jump in and begin to investigate, despite finding themselves in some rather dangerous situations.
I laughed out loud as I quickly turned the pages of this latest entry into the series. I love Mae and all her pals. Even when I found myself shaking my head at Mae’s impulsivity, I was also cracking up. She’s a great sleuth to follow around. The small town of Normal is always fun to visit and the snowy setting was charming and made me snuggle under my blanket as I read. I love the humor in this series as much as I love the descriptive writing that captures all the cozy details. While this is book 39, it can easily be read as a standalone if folks are new to the series. Just do yourself a favor and download the rest of the series – you won’t regret it!
Snowcaps, Skiing, & Sabotage is the thirty ninth cozy mystery in the Camper & Criminals mystery series. When the Olympic trials for skiing come to Normal, Kentucky it’s a big break for the town, but when one of the stars of the competition turns up dead there is so much to figure out. Never one to be able to keep out of a good mystery, Mae and the Landry Club Ladies are on the case, sleuthing until they are standing face to face with a killer.
I have loved this series since I started it and after almost forty mysteries I am still in love with it. Most cozy mystery series I’ve read have lost their edge long before now but this one just keeps getting better! These quick, funny mystery reads are engaging and keep me guessing until the very end. I loved the new twist with the Olympic skiing trials in Normal, Kentucky and thought the setting lended for another great mystery. I will always love Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies and look forward to joining them again on another mystery. If you are a cozy mystery fan and haven’t checked out this series, give it a try! The books don’t need to be read in order to enjoy the mystery, so pick this one up today! I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series.
This is book #39 in the AMAZING Campers & Criminals series (which is also being turned into a tv show soon!)
In the opening of this book we find Mae ready to race down a mountain on skis.
I bet you are thinking, it’s Mae, she has to be doing a Black Diamond run right?
Nope. Our Mae is on the bunny hill. And if you don’t get a visual of her “skiing” and you aren’t laughing, read it again.
Anyways, onto the book review!
Normal, KY is hosting the Southeast Olympic trials, and the town is buzzing with athletes, big name sponsors and tourists.
When a skiier is found dead outside in Happy Trails Campground, it initially looks like an accidental death, but we soon find out there was a very specific poison used to kill the man. Mae and the LCL burst into action to find a killer.
There are several good suspects, and the killer was low on my radar for this one.
The killer does put Mary Elizabeth in danger in this book too.
Mae is able to figure it out (with no help from Al, go figure).
Oh. And Mae gets into a snowmobile pursuit in this book too. And yes, she STOLE the snowmobile. But, it’s an integral part of the story. And funny too!
The book releases 12/29/2024 and is perfect to cozy up with on a chilly night!
Snowcaps, Skiing, & Sabotage is Mae's 39th mystery—can you believe it? This time, Normal has been lucky enough to host the Southeast Semi-finals for Skiing in the Olympics. It's a big win for the town and local businesses during the winter months. Cyril Downing, the front runner, is staying at Happy Trails Campground. What a great opportunity for Mae and the park—until she finds him frozen stiff at the campground. This is not the kind of publicity the town or the campground needs, especially when Waldo Willy immediately publicizes it in the paper. It turns out Cyril was poisoned and had several enemies, including his sponsor and both past and current rivals. Cyril might not have been the best man, but that doesn't stop Mae and her ever-faithful Laundry Ladies from jumping on the case to figure out who killed him as quickly as possible. This was a fun story. I love the Laundry Ladies and Mae, and how descriptive every page is. You feel like you're right there when you're reading. It was a fun mystery!
Skiing is an accelerating sport with many dangers. This time, Tonya takes her readers to Normal, Kentucky, at Happy Trails Campground that Mae owns. I have never skied in my life and would probably roll down the bunny slope just like Mae graciously did. The Southeast Olympic Ski trials will take place for the first time in this quaint small town. When you have people competing for thar number one spot, you will see how aggressive people can be, that even murder can be a possibility. Cyril Downing was the professional skier everyone wanted to be, but with success, they is jealously, and Cyril is found dead by Mae.
Nothing can ever stop Mae from sleuthing and working with the Laundry Club Ladies to figure out who murdered Cyril. These ladies have read enough murder mysteries to decipher who the murder suspects are. As you can only imagine, there were many suspects who didn't like Cyril. Mae goes on a wild goose chase on a snowmobile and sneaks into hotel rooms to find evidence while walking right into danger. You will be thrilled and chasing the villain down these slopes with Mae. Who do you suspect is the murderer?
When the Olympic ski trials come to Normal, KY, the little town is bursting with excitement. But things take a grim turn when the frozen body of the star competitor is found outside his cabin. How could Mae resist getting involved when the crime scene is her own campground?
Once again, Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies are knee-deep in the investigation. Sorting out the suspects is like a mogul run with enough twists and turns to keep them off balance. Was it the old rival? The ambitious up and comer? The unhappy sponsor? Will Mae solve the crime, or will her investigation wipe out on the slopes?
Any Campers and Criminals series story is a guaranteed good read, and this installment is no different. As usual, Ms. Kappes gives us all the small town vibes complete with nosey neighbors and gossip mills. The story keeps you guessing til the end, and Mae and the Ladies are such fun characters!
really enjoyed this book, the beginning made me laugh out loud. I totally related with Mae. The first and last time i attempted to ski, and of course it was on the bunny slope, I did a crash and burn! Naturally there were a lot of witnesses and I had to have some help. I decided a cup of cocoa in the lodge was the answer. Mae and Hank have a nice, cosy fifth wheel that sounds perfect for their little family, it’s a good thing they did’t tend the twins there, I’m not surety would have survived.
What an awful way for that poor guy to be murdered, although I’m not sure there’s a good way to be murdered. But Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies were right on it and working hard to solve it. No matter what sheriff Al Hemmer said about them not getting involved, I wasn’t too surprised about who the murderer was, but the reasons he gave were a surprise. People kill for the oddest reasons.
After falling gracefully (not really,) Mae West finds that volunteering at the temporary ski hill in the Daniel Boone National Park is not her best quality. When she is given other, safer duties, she meets a skier famous for all his past wins and the current draw for the upcoming event. With Normal, Kentucky hosting the Olympic Qualifier, the town is excited about putting their small town on the map. When a skier is found dead at Mae’s campground, it is soon discovered that he was murdered. Soon Mae and her amateur sleuth friends, the Laundry Club Ladies, are knee deep in finding clues. I thoroughly enjoy this humorous series and hope my visits to Normal never end. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.
Normal, Kentucky is hosting the Southeast Olympic Skiing Trials for the first time and everyone on the National Park Committee has been putting in extra hours to make sure that the events go off smoothly. One of the top contenders is staying at the campground and when Mae is taking the dogs out one evening before bed, she finds his body in the snow. Of course Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies start investigating because Mae found the body in her campground. I loved the winter setting of this story and all of the scenic descriptions of the town and the decorations. This is such a great series with great characters and a cozy setting and the mystery was interesting.
I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Trying to bring more business to the winter months in Normal, they have a turned the old brandy buildings into a really nice ski lodge and are having a competition. The ski lodge is beautiful, and it has brought out families to play in the snow and have some hot chocolate. It has also brought another murder of the favored winner of the competition, but he died at the campground! This was not how things were supposed to go! Join Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies as they try to find the murderer. Oh, and get a giggle or two with Dottie's smart aleck sayings. Never a dull moment with her around. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
This year, the Southeast Olympic ski trials are being held in Normal, much to the delight of the residents, including Mae, and before long she is playing hostess to hotshot athletes, PR gurus, and skiing enthusiasts.
Unfortunately, Mae barely has time to wear her new snowsuit when a new mystery falls in her lap and it’s up to her, Dottie, and the rest of the Laundry Club Ladies to solve the murder. There are no shortage of potential culprits, but as usual Mae finds the clues she needs to pinpoint which suspect is the actual murderer. Once again, Tonya has given Mae a fitting mystery to solve and I can’t wait for my next visit to Normal.
