I’ve been sitting with the central theme of this book: that what truly separates human intelligence from artificial intelligence is our integrity. Integrity is about our ability to make decisions in the service of the greater good. Decisions that serve our broad long-term interest (with ethics, empathy, and compassion) even when the decision might appear irrational against our narrow short-term interest. We act with integrity when we take responsibility (with a systems perspective) for our actions. This may be what we mean when we say we do the right thing.
The book raises a challenge: what role should AI play in making decisions on behalf of humans? As reliance on AI grows, its influence becomes systemic. The real question is how to replicate the principles that govern our human intelligence in something that governs our artificial intelligence. How do we embed integrity into those autonomous decisions that are now creating the world alongside us?

Mann delivers not only these questions, but also manages to provide the reader with a clear framework to steer a company or other organization through changes in revolutionary times - although this book is written for the Age of AI and aimed at AI transformation, these lessons can be put to effective good use in transformations well outside of the realm of AI too.

“Artificial Integrity” is a useful and easy-to-read book that is perfect for all audiences, both professionals involved in the AI development and laypeople interested in how AI interacts with our societies and changes our lives. Its author, Hamilton Mann, denounces the absence of any legal framework in the management of AI and proposes a paradigm shift, by defining a “design code” to ensure systems that exhibit integrity-oriented capabilities rather than the pursuit of simple general intelligence. With dogma rising and AI being sold as a panacea, Hamilton Mann cuts through the noise: any intelligence needs integrity to be directed, as much as possible, toward human benefit. Instead of surrendering to techno-absolutism, whether market-maximalist or surveillance-heavy, Artificial Integrity sets a third way: AI anchored in human values, where people aren’t reduced to data points and economic value isn’t the sole compass.
