“Put on your big-girl panties, and carry on.”

“Do it scared.”

“Fortune favors the bold.”

Growing up in a world where there was no time or tolerance for fear, a generation of women–my generation of women–were encouraged to build a facade of fearlessness. We learned how to bypass other emotions, and use our courage as the antidote for nearly every hard thing we achieved in life.

Donning courage as a constant solution, though, is exhausting. Let’s reinvent a new model to carry us beyond our midlife triumphs and into the crone space of lived wisdom.

The first step is understanding that there is not always a straight line between fear and courage. More often than not, a range of other, often overlooked and misunderstood, emotions inform and influence our reactions, our choices, and our actions.

The In Journeying From Fear to Courage is a creative nonfiction collection of personal stories that aim to inspire new conversations and reflections about how we greet fear, walk through comfortable and uncomfortable emotions, and arrive to a heart-full of courage that leads us onwards and upwards.

The book–based primarily on lessons learned from a 16,000-kilometer walk from Bangkok to Barcelona–helps us identify patterns we bring to our choice points and decision-making process, and, with that knowledge, make better and more aligned soul choices.

An inspiring nonfiction book, “The In Between: Journeying From Fear to Courage” by Jennifer Baljko, is a self-help book that is inspired by the author’s own struggle with fear and other ingrained insecurities, as well as by a difficult endeavor that changed her outlook on life.

After a painful divorce that made her feel inadequate, Baljko’s sole wish was to let go of the past and welcome whatever the future brought. Feeling quite inadequate, she made the decision to travel across Asia and Europe for three and a half years in the hopes of strengthening herself and returning with the sense of accomplishment that comes from accomplishing something on her own. The idea filled her with amazement, excitement, and surprise as she visualized the different opportunities that would probably arise from embarking on such a task.

The journey, that she embarked on with her partner Lluís, gave her a lot of life lessons. It also allowed her to face her uncertainties and fears, as well as her frustrations and anger, which were often the first things she experienced when she encountered self-inflicted failures and thoughts of not meeting her own standards. She reveals what it took to fully achieve the freedom to be her true self, how she overcame limiting mental obstacles, how she let go of some of her own and other people’s expectations, and how she got rid of preconceived notions and false myths about herself.

The reader grappling with an unfulfilled need for autonomy, self-discovery, and enduring happiness finds a moment of reflection and genuinely necessary disclosures in Baljko’s recollections. Her evocative experiences also allow her audience to see how their strengths and weaknesses may motivate and influence their choices. She also provides unmatched insights into how to identify patterns and behaviors that impact one’s decision-making and how one can apply that understanding to create better, more soul-directed decisions.

With its blend of personal growth and memoir, “The In Between: Journeying From Fear to Courage” by Jennifer Baljko delivers on its promise of an engrossing and enlightening journey. It is a simple tale with practical advice for observable, life-changing outcomes. “The In Between” is a thought-provoking book with compelling anecdotes that anyone planning to change the status quo and better themselves should read.

Jenn Baljko and her life partner Lluís López Bayona flew to Bangkok one day several years ago, then walked back to their home in Barcelona. It took them three-and-a-half years to traverse the ten thousand miles across Asia and Europe. When I first heard about it, I wondered how anyone could face such a trip.

I would have been terrified. My own travel worries usually center on how far we have to hike from the baggage carousel to the cab stand, and I couldn’t imagine how they did it. Even with meticulous planning, there had to be so many unknown factors.

Jenn’s new book, The In Between: Journeying from Fear to Courage, provides some clues. Sprinkled with anecdotes and personal essays about a number of scary experiences on their mammoth trek, The In Between details a variety of “stories that aim to inspire new conversations and reflections about how we greet fear, walk through comfortable and uncomfortable emotions, and arrive to a heart-full of courage that leads us onwards and upwards.”

“The first step,” she says, “is understanding that there is not always a straight line between fear and courage. More often than not, a range of other, often overlooked and misunderstood, emotions inform and influence our reactions, our choices, and our actions.”

The book “helps us identify patterns we bring to our choice points and decision-making process, and, with that knowledge, make better and more aligned soul choices.”

Thoughtful, thought provoking, and thrilling.

Reading this book allowed me to join an incredible journey following Jenn as she recounted her travels walking across two continents and 9,972 miles. What I wasn’t expecting was the journey she encouraged me to take within myself. Reading this book will allow you to explore the fears that hold us back and the ways we show up for ourselves. It helps you discover what courage means to you. I found myself diving deep into the questions she poses at the end of the chapters and discovering significant insights about myself.
I’ve had the privilege of watching the documentary Bangkok to Barcelona On Foot and since then I’ve been in awe of the bravery Jenn exhibited. She inspires me as a woman and as a writer. This book is a beautiful glimpse of the amazing person she is. It truly is a gift to all who read it.

This book had me traveling with the author. As she walked and told her story I felt like I was walking beside her. Her account of the places and scenery made me what to get out and do “something”.
I would highly recommend this read and look forward to additional works by the author.
