Welcome to Holiday Junction! You don’t want to miss this year’s spectacular Christmas Festival! The opening scene is like a Victorian Christmas card, and Violet, Editor in Chief of the Junction Journal, is happily snapping photos for the online version of the newspaper.
Tonya Kappes is at her most creative when designing and describing scenes in Holiday Junction. This is her best, most imaginative work, as every inch of Holiday Junction invites: “Celebrate!”
Violet ‘s handsome boyfriend, Darren, came to her new apartment in the center of the Arts District. He swept her away in a horse-drawn sleigh, complete with brass bells and warm, cozy blanket. He took her to the newly remodeled Christmas Lodge, which had not been open in years. Darren wanted Violet to experience the grand opening with him.
Violet’s parents, stylishly attired, are helping out on the big night. Violet’s biggest surprise is that Darren is now the owner of the fully renovated lodge. Over the past year, he bought, designed, and updated the place of many of his happiest childhood memories without her finding out. Both his parents and hers helped with the work. Violet’s Mama, Millie Kay, is thrilled that Southern Charm Magazine sent reporters to cover the Lodge’s grand opening and the winning Holiday Junction Christmas Ornament.
Darren introduced Violet to Lionel, who had not been at the Christmas Market for several years. He won the contest to make this year’s ornament, and displayed several of his exquisite, handmade ornaments from past years. Evelyn Frost, his best competitor, was angry and said Violet should investigate and report on why he was chosen. Much later that night, Violet went back to the Lodge to take photos. At Lionel’s booth, she found his ornaments shattered and scattered about. Lionel was on the floor, dead.
The Southern Charm reporters want to find whodunit and get their big break from reporting the ornament designer’s murder at the festival. Violet is no longer looking for the big scoop to take her away to a major city, but it is still Her Scoop, Her Town, and Her Knack to help the sheriff find killers.
The quirky characters are demonstrated through realistic behaviors and conversations. Violet has changed so much since she accidently landed here a couple years ago. She was not one of my favorite people in Normal, Kentucky, home of Mae West and the Laundry Club Ladies, but she is a favorite here. I also admire Goldie, who drives the village tram. We see her in every visit, with clothes and accessories for the current holiday. Her genuine cheer is infectious to all, and she has helped Violet with past investigations. Mama has a collection of Southern sayings. This time I particularly like, “…someone was counting their bells before they jingled”.
The solution to Lionel’s death was a difficult challenge. At first, it looked like he had a heart attack, as he was an elderly man. How he was killed was not evident. There was one person with a motive and an alibi. I was completely surprised by whodunit! It wasn’t someone anyone, including the police, had their eye on. The Merry Maker gets in his final word. I highly recommend this cozy mystery! If you enjoy Southern cozy mysteries and romantic Christmas movies, settle in with your favorite Christmas music and hot chocolate, and enjoy Christmas with Violet!
From a thankful heart: I read an uncorrected copy of this novel and this is my honest review.
