There was good information in this book as an introduction to herbalism and curanderismo but I felt there was a lot of mention of yoga, reiki, chakras etc. I understand it was based on the authors experience and training In those areas and her trying to show the relation to curanderismo, but, I felt that the book was a bit lacking.

Latine Herbalism by Iosellev Castañeda is an accessible introduction to curanderismo, herbalism, and traditional healing practices of Indigenous peoples from Mexico, Central America, South America and other parts of the Americas. The book explores herbs, healing methods, spiritual practices, rituals and recipes while explaining their cultural background.
I appreciated the author’s warm and easy-to-understand writing, interesting chapters and practical recipes. It works particularly well for beginners who have little knowledge of curanderismo or herbal medicine.
However, I felt that the book was not as deeply focused on Latine herbalism as expected. There are frequent discussions of yoga, reiki, chakras and other New Age or holistic practices, which sometimes make the book feel scattered. Somewhere also I felt that Indigenous communities and practitioners could have been given a stronger voice, particularly through more direct interviews and firsthand perspectives.
Overall, it is considered a good primer for beginners, but experienced readers may find it less detailed and culturally focused than expected.

In 2009 I started working a Catholic University that had a holistic health Master's program, and that kicked off my decade-long obsession with the topic. For various reasons, I lost touch with it, and this book was a wonderful reminder of how invaluable and timeless holistic medicine and ancestral healing is. This book specifically covers healing practices of the Indigenous peoples of Mexico, Central and South America, and the adaptations they used post-colonialism. I could never be a practitioner, but I have so much respect for those called to the field. This book is a lovely overview of Latine Herbalism and Curanderismo. I really enjoyed the explanations of how each healing is performed, the purposes, and the recipes were very lovely. I feel very inspired after reading this book, and leave with a renewed respect and appreciation for the people who practice and share holistic, ancestral medicine and healing.

Three stars because this book is more about holistic healing and new age spirituality than what I’ve read in other books about curanderismo. Or what I was looking for in a book about latine herbalism. I know about Ayureveda and reiki and I’m sure curanderas are well rounded by having that knowledge and understanding and seeing the similarities across eastern, western and Latin holistic healing methodologies, but if I wanted to read a book about those modalities I would have done so. I don’t know I was just expecting more from this book because of the other curanderismo books I’ve read. I especially liked The Curanderx toolkit. I did like the recipes she shared though.

not as in depth into latine herbalism as i wanted but it’s a great primer and introduction. i wish though, all of the text were dedicated to latine herbalism. at time it felt hodge podgy and compare and contrasty to other herbolic modalities.

Latine Herbalism is an inviting introduction to curanderismo, plant medicine, and folk healing traditions across the Americas. It feels less like a strict herbal reference book and more like a guide to the beliefs, practices, and cultural traditions surrounding healing.
Iosellev Castañeda’s writing is warm and accessible, especially for readers coming to the subject with little background knowledge. The explanations are clear without stripping away the spiritual and cultural elements that give these practices their meaning. That balance makes the book easy to move through without making the material feel overly simplified.
The organization also works well for a beginner’s guide, moving between herbs, traditional practices, common concerns, and ritual elements in a way that keeps the book from becoming a long catalog of plants. There is a good amount of information here, although readers looking for a deeply academic history or an exhaustive herbal reference may find the treatment broader than they want.
One of the stronger aspects is the way the book places herbal remedies within a larger tradition rather than treating plants as isolated ingredients. The connections to modern curanderismo, regional traditions, and spiritual practices give the material more context and personality.
Overall, Latine Herbalism is a thoughtful starting point for readers curious about herbalism, curanderismo, and folk healing traditions of the Americas.

i liked the recipes and the chapters are fun to read. more of a crit of new age latine approaches to herbalism /spirituality though is the way it invisibilizes indigenous communities especially from countries like Mexico Guatemala and Peru. i wish the end chapter included interviews from the women/curanderas actually practicing the traditions the grew up in rather than only from (almost) entirely first world herbalist who gained their training from the ability to be able to go and learn from these practitioners. don’t want to hold it against the book to much though

In many respects this is a beginners guide and those with a bit more experience under their belt can skim. There were some awesome recipes that I saved to my recipe book: Kitchari, Digestive Lemonade, Vaporu rub. The section on vibrational healing had some applicability for me, but much of the book beyond there was useful only in a adjunct/ coming alongside to observe sense. In all though, enjoyable!
