The Lightbearers: Awake

Rate this book
Cara Porter is the epitome of ordinary - a soon-to-be divorced mother of twins who runs her own accounting service. So when she and her friend rescue a surfer from a rip tide in Florida and Cara hears the ocean communicating with her, she knows she is either losing her mind, or finding her meaning... This book requires more than the usual dose of attention. I tried reading this in bits and pieces while visiting a family member in the hospital, but I found it much more coherent when I started anew with a clearer head and with some solid hours of reading time.

Beth Hermes tackles some heavy religious themes in this first book of the series, and she is bound to offend some readers. With a little tolerance, though, the narrative transforms the main character, Cara, from a stereotypical suburb-dwelling super-mom into a centerpiece of history. I look forward to more revelations of Cara's experiences, and to watching her children grow into her guides.
