Niko Devlin has risen to every challenge that the Imperial Avalonian Army has thrown him since joining to avoid jail time for beating a crime lord’s son.
But war is hell, and now Devlin must rise to a challenge possibly beyond his ability… turning a bunch of misfits, quitters, and jailbirds into a unit that His Majesty can use. All while dealing with hostility from above and below him in the chain of command.
The Devil is once again calling the tune, though, and Devlin is going to have to sing along.
Everyone likes a good mash up of stories but this was a bit much. Most of the plot is from the Clint Eastwood “Hamburger Hill” movie with some direct quotes from the TV series “Sharpe” near the end. I don't mind writers plagiarizing themes but this went way too far in terms of direct mirroring
So the first book was great a bit of a common theme. This book sure does remind me of a certain movie that my generation enjoyed except set in a futuristic setting. Should be a good read for the younger generation who probably have not seen said movie. If you know you know.
Seems like a straight riff of Heartbreak Ridge, even the names are similar. After the first book, I was looking forward to this, so disappointing. I feel like the first 24ish chapters were basically the plot of the movie noted earlier, then got better, but went right back to the movie again near the end.
I do not leave reviews or comments... This is an exception. I spent this last weekend with the 2 books in this series. It was worth every minute I spent. I want more
This was a good read, excellent follow-up. The story pulled me in early. Spent too much time with book instead of what I should have been doing, lol. I recommend this book and author.
Pretty good book with likable characters only gripe is the “devil calls the tune” repeated more than “with great responsibility…” from spider-man. We get it cool concept just seeming forced in the dialogue way too much.
Author takes an oft repeated plot and writes it so that is an entertaining and enjoyable novel, not an easy task. Characters become people and develop decently, overwhelming odds somehow overcome, and the day is saved. Decent book.
Watch the movie heartbreak Ridge much... This could have been a great second book in the series but the out right thief of dialogue ruined it for me......
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book. Started the second book and was a little disappointed. All I can say is the author must like the movie Heartbreak Ridge.
The MC is once again at the tip of the spear. This time he has to whip a squadron of screw-ups into shape despite his commander being a by-the-book hack unsuitable for command. Not quite as interesting as the first book, but still a decent story.
