The Devil's Tangle

Rate this book
A stolen rose, a mad prince, a sister’s sacrifice, and the dark curse that binds them.

Music is Dahlia’s life. Born with the uncanny ability to play any instrument she picks up, her songs seem to possess the power to transfix, soothe, and even heal their listeners. But in her world of expected propriety and dutiful acceptance of her future as the wife of Lord John Beaumont such a gift has no place. Like the ruined castle at the center of the wildwood it reminds people of the old stories. Stories of enchanted beasts, changelings, and immortal bargains. Stories better forgotten. But on the night of solstice those ancient tales come crashing into reality when Dahlia’s younger sister, Helena, plucks a rose from the ruined castle’s overgrown garden.

For centuries Caspien Greythorn has been a loyal servant of the Master, the fae prince who guards the forgotten castle that was once a bridge between realms. But when a foolish mortal girl steals from the palace garden and her equally foolish sister begs to be punished for the theft in her sister’s place that loyalty is stretched to breaking point. Who is this strange young woman with eyes like burned honey and the exiled prince’s gift of song? Is she the soul rumoured to be able to break the Master’s curse or is she just a deadly distraction?

What is the price of a single rose? For Dahlia and Caspien, it just might cost them everything.

I read this book as an ARC and loved it. I couldn’t put it down once I started.

I don’t even know where to start to talk about my love for this book so I will just say I loved everything about it and will definitely read it again.

I loved Grey and Dahlia and every second of their story had me hooked. The twists and turns had a hold on my heart and I felt it could break at any moment but the ending made it worth it.

I loved most of the characters and of course hated a few for obvious reasons (if you’ve read it you will know who I’m talking about). A few I disliked but then they redeemed themselves in the end.

The Devil’s Tangle is the kind of fantasy that sinks its claws in from the first page and doesn’t let go. It’s got that dark fairytale vibe (think Beauty and the Beast meets ancient fae curses), but it never feels like a retelling — it’s fresh, emotional, and totally its own thing.

I loved the characters — especially Dahlia. She’s talented, complicated, a little angry, and honestly just so real. Her bond with music is magical in every sense of the word, and I loved how her power felt both dangerous and deeply personal. If I could have any magic, it’d be hers, no question.

Caspien, the fae prince, was the perfect mix of broody and tragic, and their dynamic had me hooked. There were so many moments where I didn’t know if I could trust him — and yet, I was rooting for them the whole time.

The world-building was absolutely gorgeous, and the atmosphere? Chef’s kiss. You could feel the weight of the curse, the ruined beauty of the fae castle, and the tension humming through every scene. And the twists? They hit hard. I thought I knew where it was going... and then it knocked me sideways in the best way.

If you’re into dark, romantic fantasy with powerful women, cursed princes, haunting magic, and a whole lot of feels — read this. I devoured it.

I received this book as an ARC and I was so excited to read it.
I had a really good time reading this book. I thought in the beginning that it is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, but it was a lot more than that. It is a fast paced fantasy with a bit of romance. It is beautifully written and the story is interesting. I loved Captain and Dahlia and I would like some more chapters in the end of the book. Dahlia is a strong female character and I liked her from the beginning. Captain is so protective and brave. I would like to know more about his past. Also, I would like to know more about Marcel and his past. The story has no spice at all but I did not miss it.

The Devil's Tangle is a fantasy mystery C E Page. When I read the beginning of the book, I thought this must be a fairytale retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I was so WRONG! This "Master" is pure evil. Dahlice takes the place of her sister, Helena. Caspien must bring Dahlice to the Master and the rest of the story flew of the pages. I found the characters to be perfectly written. This is a fast paced fantasy that I found thrilling. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

Thank you to Book Sirens for a copy of this book.
The story line is really promising and has some good ideas but I struggled with feeling like I was involved in the story. Another review mentions there was no internal monologue and I agree, I think it makes it hard to connect to the characters.
This might be better for younger audiences than myself.

~This was given to me as an ARC read under the conditions that post my honest review on GR. I'll do my best to tag spoilers.~

Getting to read this as an ARC was an absolute pleasure. This is a pretty 4* for me. I absolutely flew through it after being immediately hooked. The writing style is immersive and engaging and for someone who can't make pictures in their head, I felt like I was there.

I loved this take on the Beauty & The Beast story. There are plenty of such stories floating around that are popular (coughcoughACOTAR), but this one stood out to me. Not only were there seelie and creatures that were classified outside of the "high vs lower" fae, but I liked the exploration of the wilder side of seelie heritage.. the ferality, the struggle of control, the fighting to stay true to one's morals and values in the face on nature.

The back 3/4s of this book was a fetch quest which isn't a bad thing at all, I quite like scavenger hunts. The FMC (Dahlia) was inexperienced and thrust into a world that would gobble her up immediately but she was strong in a way that felt realistic (as realistic as a fantasy book can be). She fumbled and stumbled and could hold some semblance of her own, but she wasn't immediately Good At Everything. She maintained her independence and integrity as best she could and that was something I really appreciated. When she was The FMC Who Was Good At The Thing, it made sense in the context of the story.

On that note, I'm a bit bummed because I feel like the farther we got into it, particularly in the middle half, that it was slightly repetitive and starting to be pretty rushed. It got a bit old that leg after leg of this journey, quite literally every day, Dahlia could hold her own but would eventually be Grievously Injured™ and need to be pampered. I know she's human and it makes sense for her to be more fragile, and it was necessary for plot reasons, but it was getting a bit damsel-in-distress for my taste, especially when that's not how it was in the first half of the book.

In particular, and the main reason it wasn't 4.5*+, was that the back half of the book was increasingly rushed which was disappointing. The last 1/4 was bam-bam-bam and I was just craving a bit more like we'd gotten before. More description of the situation, the inner dialogue, the consequences. The last few chapters felt like it was still in the early editing stages and hadn't been fully fleshed out. It felt a bit too easy at the end. I wanted a knock down drag out MMA brawl because that's what the story felt like it was leading to, but it felt more like a warm up round for WWE. It could have easily been another 50 pages to include all of that and I would have lapped it up like a dying man opening his mouth to the rain.

As a side note, there were some punctuation errors (ex. missing commas) throughout but it wasn't egregious. I noticed it, but it didn't bother me. Just a heads up if that kind of thing bugs you: it's there, but just move along, it's not gonna bite you.

I adored the characters and their relationships. The tension and slow-dancing-around-each-other between the FMC and the MMC had me kicking my feet and squealing. The pacing of it was delicious. I want more more more. I need art of them like, ASAP.

Overall, easy easy 4*. Please if there's another opportunity for an ARC, hit me up <3 👉👈

Dahlia is a young woman who loves music. She has a gift and even her mother, who highly values women's propriety, has allowed her this gift since she is so talented. At a party where Dahlia knows she is expected to become engaged, her sister Helena decides to pick a rose from the castle ruins in the forest, believing all the stories are just that - stories. When a stranger has come to collect Helena, Dahlia will not let her be taken and offers herself instead. Now Dahlia is thrown into the Fae Realm with no hope of escape and a magical bond sealing her to a dark Fae prince with each passing day. Once Cael, the trapped Fae prince, realizes exactly who she is, everyone will want something from her and not everyone wants to break the curse Cael's actions had forced onto the land. Dahlia must figure out who to trust and how to use the fae half of her heritage to try to break the curse to save herself and the realm.
Dahlia is a strong-willed young woman who wants to keep her music even if she is forced to marry and she wants to keep her sister safe so she offers to take the punishment on herself. She tries to defy Cael at just about every turn while she is in the castle. She will try things her way even if it's dangerous. I do wish she would have learned from her impetuousness a little sooner, but that is her character flaw. Caspien/Grey is another half-breed who is bound to Cael. He has hardened himself against any emotion after losing everyone except Flora. Marcel is the character you want to immediately dislike, but grows on you. Never sure where his loyalties lie, you keep your metaphorical eyes on him the entire time.
There was definitely wonderful world building, and it felt like you were there. The descriptions of not only the environment, but the binding tattoos as well as the artifact tattoos were so easy to imagine. The build up to then ending was a little slow at one point, maybe bc I just wanted to know what was going to happen. I enjoyed all the different fae and the use of fae species that are not often read about as well. These weren't your fluffy/sweet fae, but dangerous and deadly no matter which side they were on. The one thing I wish there was more of were back stories and backgrounds. Bound artifacts and tattoos - where did they come from? What was the history between certain characters?
This was based loosely on Beauty and the Beast, with the roses and the library. But you are definitely not rooting for the Beast in this book. With all the different quirky characters and adventures through the realm/labyrinth, I also felt like I was thrown into Wonderland as well.
I enjoyed this story and saw reviews hat say it is a standalone, but Amazon has it listed as part of a series, so I am interested to see if there will be more from this world in the future.

The Devil's Tangle is a loose dark retelling of Beauty and the Beast, with a focus on the word loose there. Don't go into this expecting a straight retelling. It isn't and it's far stronger for it. C.E. Page makes the story her own, but still leans into the dark feel of the originals whilst also making it contemporary and suitable for a young adult audience. It's a well written narrative that twists away from reader expectations in a good way, has a cast of characters who will stay with me and strong world-building and lore to set the scene.

Dahlia is all lined up for a marriage she has no interest in when her sister plucks a single rose from the overgrown and abandoned castle nearby. Little do they know that one act will completely change both of their lives. With Dahlia trapped by the Fae Prince, time is running out fast and somehow it seems she may be the only person who can break the curse that holds them all. But only if she can do it before the last rose blooms.

I really quite enjoyed this, which is impressive considering it's a retelling and romance and neither of those are my favoured genres. It was particularly strong at the start with evocative descriptions of the castle and the Master's increasingly appalling behaviour. I felt it really set the scene well and built up the characters in such a way that I cared what happened to it. Probably around about the third mark, we veer off into the quest to break the curse and this allows for more detailed world-building with various fae races brought to life and also the relationship elements are further developed. As a minor niggle, the quest did become a bit repetitive after a while. It felt like the same ground was being covered multiple times. However once we get to the concluding chapters the tension ramps up once more and it all pulls together well.

All in all, this is a strong YA offering in the retelling genre that keeps things interesting by twisting the original narrative of the faerie tale so you are reading a very different story that just borrows from the source documentation. I liked the characterisations, even if some of Dahlia's judgement is questionable at best, and the romance angle was deftly woven through without completely overshadowing the main plot.

The book starts out interesting enough. Dahlia finds herself in a pickle at the start of the story and as the story elements were introduced I found myself engaged. Unfortunately at about the 50% mark I found myself losing interest. The characters were hard at work trying to solve their problem, but it felt more like wheel spinning exercises than making any actual progress. The pacing felt off. Not in terms of stuff happening, but in terms of making headway towards finding a solution to their problem. I did make it to the end, but it wasn’t as satisfying as I’d hoped because I’d partially checked out. The author does a lot of great world building and introduces novel characters but unfortunately, I felt like when new characters are introduced, rather than progressing the plot, they seem to pause it to go on side quests.

The book cover promises romance, but I felt the chemistry between Dahlia and Caspian was lacking. They were so focused on breaking the curse they forgot to think about what they liked about each other. The book is definitely readable, but I wanted to be caught up in the love story, and didn’t feel swept off my feet.

It’s a good book for a debut, but for a romance, I’d like a little more sizzle and spice and everything nice in the future.

The Devil’s Tangle
By C.E. Page

This unique reimagining of the classic Beauty and the Beast story we all know and love is exciting and brings a note of mystery that keeps you captivated throughout the story.

The forbidden chemistry between Dahlia and Grey and their banter kept a smirk on my face. I like that their relationship wasn’t just built on the physical, but also their shared experiences dealing with the Master amongst other things.

The idea of the original story placed an expectation in my mind while reading that kept me wondering, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Author’s take on the characters and their roles in the story.

One word. Marcel. If Grey wasn’t in the picture, I tell you, I would ship him with Dahlia in a heartbeat!

I found it easy enough to read. Some of the sentence structuring made me feel a bit confused because I am not used to it but the blend of narrative and descriptive writing was well written.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves Fairytales reimagined.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Dahlia's musical ability is extraordinary. The songs she plays seem to have their own power to evoke strong feelings and emotions. However, Dahlia's imminent marriage to Lord Beaumont is likely to be just free of music as it is love. But the night of her engagement, Dahlia's sister picks a forbidden bloom, causing Dahlia to volunteer to pay the price for her theft. But the fae prince her bargain is with is more treacherous than she realizes, and Dahlia soon realizes that she needs to break the curse affecting everyone before the time on her bargain runs out.

The Devil's Tangle is a creative fantasy tale with a persistent female protagonist and a tormented and reclusive male love interest. The plotting and world building is sublime with plenty of interesting side characters and fairy-tale pitfalls that keep you interested. A thoroughly immersive read that you won't put down.

Curses and songs

When Dahlia offers to trade places with her sister Helena, to receive punishment for what she perceives as a minor crime, little does she expect to end up cursed, imprisoned, and with bleak future of forced obedience waiting for her. Though when she gets a chance to try and break the curse, she definitely can't say no.
The fairytale-like story with some elements of the Beauty and the Beast, although in a typical fae twisted form, is as enchanting as the magic it holds. Secrets, curses, fae folk, magical instruments, oaths, and sentient hedge.. the story is truly magical. I very much loved the characters too, with Dahlia's stubborn nature and awakening of the wildspark in her, the conflict in Caspien, the endearing presence of Tamkiss and Vadkin, and mercurial actions of Marcel... oh, and ermine? Really? Could one pick a cuter animal for a story? This book had all I could have asked for!

I enjoyed this fairy tale type story!
When a mistake happens in an old garden, our main character steps in to save her sister and is whisked away to the world of fae in her stead. The world is ruled by the master, a cruel fae with the power to bind her forever to his side. Standing between her and this fate is Caspien Greythorn, the masters dutiful servant. Does Dahlia have the power to break the curse that has ensnared all the fae? They, along with a wonderful cast of side characters (Flora!!!) fight to ensure that Dahlia is given the chance to free them all. The quest is wonderful and filled with magic and mystery.
I love the slow burn romance between our characters, the different fae we encounter along the way and the way Dahlia comes into her powers.
My only wish is that there was some sort of twist or surprise. I enjoyed the writing very much but would have been very happy to have been surprised at the story too.

This is the first book I read from C.E. Page. I am not a huge fantasy reader, especially a fantasy without spice. However, this book sucked me in from the first chapter and I devoured it. The writing flows beautifully, the story is interesting and keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. The relationship between dahlia and the mmc is nicely built up and makes you want a love with such dedication in your life. Even if you are not a fantasy reader give this one a go it was a beautiful story that will keep you wanting more beginning to end. I received this book as an ARC but this had no effect on my reviews and ratings.
Spice 🫑 nothing more than some kissing.
Overall rating 4.5 ⭐️ the only thing is I wish the ending had stretched a little longer or there was an epilogue but the book is fantastic and deserves all the readers!

ARC REVIEW

A woman, a curse, a magical realm, and a brutal prince. This book is like a fairytale is magical.

Dahlia, the FMC. After her sister stole a rose and she had to pay for the steal, Dahlia took her sister's place in order to protect her. I have liked her since the beginning. She is a strong and brave woman.
The MMC. Omg! I'm in love with Caspien. This man is perfect. He's protective, not afraid to die, and just amazing. There are no words to describe everything that he did in order to protect Dahlia and save her from the devil.
Marcel, to be honest, I didn't like him in the beginning, but that changed after. He and Flora are loyal friends, and I really liked how their friendship with Dahlia grew up.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well-developed and sympathetic, and the magic system was so inventive. The description was beautiful, and it was like I could picture a movie of the book in my head. It would be a great candidate for adaptation by Graphic Audio, even though I know that's probably pretty unlikely. It's a great twist on Beauty and the Beast that does not include the more problematic Stockholm Syndrome-like elements from the original story.

My only issue with the book is that some of the plot felt unnecessary. I know it was an epic fantasy, but it really felt like some elements of the quest were just there to make the quest longer. It was plotted in a somewhat confusing way.

Let’s start off with the cover, it’s absolutely beautiful! The flowers, the dress, the woman - everything about this cover is so perfect.

The story was very beautifully written and I loved every second of this story. I loved how music was a an important part of Dahlias character. I enjoyed the journey that the characters took in order to try and stop a curse that they’ve fallen victim to. Even though it was worrisome, I like how it’s not revealed if they were successful or not in breaking the curse until the end.

Dahlia and Grey are so perfect for each other. They also happen to be my favorite characters in this story along with Flora.

I hated everything about Cael and how he treated everyone.

First off, thank you to BookSirens for connecting the author and I so I could have the opportunity to ARC this novel!

Wow! Wow! Wow! I can honestly say this book is a must read! Very low spice 🫑, but the adventure and the romance that this book brings you through? Perfection.

✨ Enemies to lovers
✨ Gothic fae
✨ Powerful, strong FMC
✨ Dual POV
✨ Fated mates

I can honestly say that this will go into my re-read repertoire. There wasn’t a single time I thought to myself, “is this book over yet?” It was a great story line, started off fast and hard to hook you in, and keeps you there on that roller coaster. Finishing in the smoothest way. 👏🏻

An updated version of Beauty & the Beast - but with a dark twist. This was a great read.

I can not wait to read the next book in this series. I love the details of each character; I have come to know each one. A fast paced fantasy that was very well written.

I enjoyed this. It kind read a little YA but with some darker elements. I liked seeing Dahlia's journey, seeing her and Caspien's relationship develop, the found family, and how music was incorporated into the magic. The end was good too.

Thank you to BookSirens and C.E. Page for and ARC of The Devil’s Tangle!

First off, I really enjoyed the premise of this novel—it was super unique!

I did have a couple hang ups though. I felt as if the characters all got super close, super quickly and as a reader there wasn’t any reason that we saw as to why they bonded. Where was the detail and internal character monologue? My second hang up was how quick things were resolved in the novel. Anytime there was conflict or tension, it seemed to resolve super quickly— again I think this was just lack of detail and maybe an attempt to keep the novel shorter?

Overall, I think this would be a great YA novel! It just wasn’t what I was fully expecting it to be!
