THIS MONSTER IS OUT FOR BLOOD - AND SHE'S READY TO BE CONSUMED

JULIET

Maybe the mega-virus that threw the world into an apocalypse and turned the vampires into zombies did mess up my brain. Because the new officer at my compound—where I am kept to be used as a blood supply for the vampires—is strangely irresistible.

Which is ridiculous, because all vampires are dangerous, and cold, and vicious.

What’s worse, I’ve seemed to have caught his eye.

And like all monsters, he won’t give up until he has what he wants.

SILAS
Vampires and humans aren’t allowed to be together. It’s strictly forbidden, and breaks every rule I’ve been taught.

But to hell with them.

Juliet is all that I want, all that I need. She will be mine—no matter the cost, no matter the consequences.

The chase is on.

I'm super disappointed with this one. It was very repetitive, filled with many unnecessary smut scenes... I mean they were great but I felt like it was too much.

Possible spoilers:

Afflicted by R.D. Baker is a vampire x human-forbidden romance in a post-apocalyptic world. I’ll be honest this wasn’t what I expected the story to turn into from how the first 40% started. From that point, it went downhill; the story shifted to endless smut and a dead plot – the Afflicted (zombie vampires) repeatedly breached the compound, which became quite repetitive, it felt like over 200 pages of breaches. It was later revealed that the National Guard was behind these breaches. They were using the Afflicted to try to get into the compound? It wasn’t clear until the end of the book (within the last 15 -20 pages), where it was somewhat explained, but throughout the story, it remained an unexplored plotline. I enjoyed the writing style and believe this story holds great potential, but it was underwhelming.

The events in the first 50-60% of the story set up a different potential storyline than what was delivered. I had this vision of the potential it could be – a Vampire post-apocalyptic world, where the National Guard is saving the humans from these evil vampires and there’s been a war going on for years/the start of a war; would have been way more epic IMO, with Divergent or The Hunger Games vibes; the vamp x human love interest fleeing the war, etc.

At this point, I’m just visualizing things that didn’t really happen and it makes me sad!!

Anyway, I shall digress…

After 50%, I began skimming through all the smut scenes because they occurred so frequently, with at least two in each chapter or just 40 pages of straight smutty scenes with nothing else, this definitely didn’t contribute much to the plot progression. We get it, the main characters are hopelessly in love and super co-dependent. I honestly got bored and thought about DNF’ing, but continued skimming, searching for some kind of redeeming quality, which never really happened. I guess, it started to pick up again around 84% when Sam’s (Silas’ supervisor / old FWB) jealousy led to Juliet being transferred to the Breeding Compound, which causes Silas to panic in turn fleeing with Juliet to a Human Safehaven in Roanoke. Despite Juliet’s pleas, Silas leaves her there because Vampires aren’t allowed, and after spending a day-ish there she decides to leave the safety of the compound in search of Silas. In hindsight, it wasn’t the wisest decision, considering the events that unfolded after leaving. As they set off to live in the wild they see the National Guard, with tanks and an army of afflicted heading towards the Safehaven. No deaths but interesting information from one of the National Guard doctors about the “Originals” (yes, just like TVD; original vampires). One confusing thing, are they still at the Safehaven, or did the National Guard take them somewhere? No idea, but the ending felt rushed. I guess it’s nice knowing there’s an agreement between the President and the Vampires to rebuild. And a HEA.

The dialogue occasionally felt childish, particularly from Juliet’s perspective. While she initially appeared as a promising character, she gradually lost her appeal and was annoying. She felt a bit bland and not particularly smart or strong. I’ll be honest I didn’t understand Silas’ obsession with her. Also, the fact that she is very co-dependent, and she seemed quick to say “I love you,” first to Matt (who was her first love interest, Matt came from the Breeding Compound… that’s a whole other story and too much chaos to even decipher rn) and then to Silas, which made her come across as shallow? I don’t know, by the end of this, I did not like her much.

Silas King, our MMC, was way more interesting, although his background felt a little rough. He was kinda the perfect book boyfriend: protective, possessive in a good way, gorgeous, with a “touch her and d!e” vibe, and utterly devoted to Juliet. His morally grey nature made him even more appealing.

I guess I did enjoy their chemistry. Despite the unusual circumstances, their bond felt healthier than in other Dark Romances. They communicated well about their lives before the apocalypse, their interests, past hobbies, their relationship, and their hopes for the future. These parts were refreshing especially when more than half the book was just smutt.

Definitely needed minor editing and I hope it was before release because there were a few things like forgetting the ‘h’ in he, or “gGuard” when talking about the National Guard.

Overall, it wasn’t bad; I even found myself enjoying some parts despite its shortcomings.

Thank you for the ARC, R.D. Baker

when will i find a vampire romance book that's not disappointing? im begging

i didn't like juliet. at first she was fine but she became annoying as the story went on. she's so bland and uninteresting and weak and stupid and she was always fucking crying, always. i get that that she's in a fucked up situation but she was crying for every fucking thing, everytime...it was so annoying. i don't understand how silas was so obsessed with her? why? makes no sense. his fuck buddy was more interesting than her

silas was a better character but the way he called her angel 1000 times was annoying after a time
also this has the dead ex trope...ugh i hate it here. i will never be free of this god awful trope😔 seriously i would not have picked this up if i know. and she was brought up constantly, the whole ass book, even in the epilogue 🤢 and juliet was way too chill about it. like she was giggling and kicking her feet when he talked about his ex, she didn't care? at all? she was like yes talk to me about how much you loved her and how you fucked her...be fucking for real
i hate it when the mmc was in love before the fmc. he wasn't just a hoe but he was actually in love before ugh gag
it would have been better if his ex is alive and he actually chooses juliet over her but i don't think he would have and honestly i wouldn't blame him

he was also obsessed with some other girl besides his dead ex in his past so the fact that he's obsessed with juliet isn't even special. it's just the way he is. if she dies he would just find some new girl to obsess over eventually 🙄 what's the point of the boy obsessed trope if she's just one of many? nothing 🤡

some things were repetitive but the ending was rushed.

there are multiply ow/om sex scenes in detail. what was the point? it didn't add anything to the story and i don't want to read about how they fuck other people for half the book? one time would have been enough
and of course he had a great sex life, and fmc didn't...im tired. at least she wasn't actually a virgin so there's that
im so tired of authors pairing up sexually and romantically experienced men with inexperienced women. why couldn't she be in love before? or have a great sex life? like the mmc? its always the same shit im so over it

im only giving 2 stars because of the apocalyptic vampire setting, i haven't seen it before and it was interesting. if only it would have been fleshed out more. it's a shame because this book could have been good without the things that bothered me and with a better fmc.

2.75 stars- skimmed the last 40%

It was ok. Slow to start. I found the bedroom interactions a bit cringy and repetitive. I didn’t like the names he called her during the sex scenes and his propensity to say repeatedly - you like that, don’t you, you “insert derogatory term here”. The beginning of the end for me once that started.

There were some interesting parts at the beginning and I liked the writing style but the core storyline wasn’t particularly unique and Juliet was a bit beige and not particularly smart or strong. I really didn’t get Silas’ obsession with her. Also- I felt she was quick to say “I love you”, first to Matt and then to Silas….making her a bit shallow?

I started the Shadow and the Bone sample by the same author with this one concurrently and that one was arguably better with the illicit nature of the relationship that we see right from the get go. That male MC was extremely appealing. I probably should’ve read that one rather than this one but got sucked into the vampire storyline. It might have been easier if the story was on KU but having to pay for a book immediately makes my expectations higher.

When I tell you my jaw was on the floor with this book!!!!!!

Speedy synopsis:
A forbidden love story in a post-apocalyptic world between our vampire MMC Silas and our human MFC Jules.

Dark romance
Long trigger warning list
Touch her and DIE x 10
SPICYYYY SCENES
Military type setting
He falls first
TENSIONNNNNNN
Substance Recovery rep

I simply cant put into words the emotional rollercoaster this one had me on.
I was SO into the plot, never hit a lull for me- it was so suspenseful.
The spice was immaculate - RD Baker, right off the rip, chapter 1, love LOVED all of the spicy scenes.
The banter was great.
The characters were the only piece that took me a minute to get invested in. Their lust story was there, but I am glad their love story REALLY developed in a mature manner. All of the stories back and forth between them, had me in MY FEELS.
The ending near tore my heart out, I was UNWELL.

As always, RD Baker gives us an emotional, passionate, steamy read to eat up!! ADD THIS TO YOUR TBR NOW DARK ROMANCE LOVERS

Vampire/human romance in the zombie vampire apocalypse .

A dark romance has never been this sweet before.
Even though most of this story takes place within the convines of a military style compound, it was incredibly interesting and full of suspense. The romance between Juliet and Silas was a slow burn, but once it's on, the spice barely stopped. They were properly addicted to each other.

The further we got into the story, the more I was on the edge of my seat, heart racing, hoping that everything would be okay. I loved Juliet and Silas' relationship development. Despite the unusual circumstances, their relationship felt healthy. They communicated so well with each other about their lives before the apocalypse, their interests, past hobbies, their relationship, and hopes for the future.

This story was so much more than I expected!

Silas King? Ummmm yes, please! I need this in an audio duet ASAP so that I can swoon over that British accent.🫠The medium burn payoff is well worth the wait and believe me, RD does not disappoint... Payday. Comes. Often! 😏 The idea of how the Afflicted came to be, resulting in human imprisonment is unique and created the perfect backdrop for a dark and twisty romance. I loved the world she created in this Zombie-Vampire Apocalypse and I would totally be on board for an entire series of Vombie books...And of course, more Silas. All of the Silas.🧡❤️🖤

Afflicted 4.5 ⭐️

This is my first book I’ve read by this author and it will definitely not be my last!!!

This book was dark and definitely a page turner. It was written well and was easy to follow along. I loved that it was set in a post apocalyptic time and included vampires. There were many times where my heart was pounding from the twists and turns in this book and I didn’t want to put it down. The book was extremely spicy and the spicy scenes are living rent free in my head.

Silas was a perfect book boyfriend. He was protective, possessive (in a good way), gorgeous, touch her and die vibes💀,only has eyes for Juliet. Silas was definitely what you describe as morally black which we love.

Juliet is such a strong FMC and has gone through hell and back. She had an emotional time in this book but it had made her even stronger.

There are some triggering themes that might upset some readers, so make sure you read the trigger warnings prior to starting the book.

This was not a good time...
An editor was desperatly needed, FMC was awful and extremely childish, Zero plot and someone was literally fornicating almost every damn chapter I wish I was joking like how horny are you?? this was just, NO -.-

The Walking Dead meets The Vampire Diaries. I felt like i was there. The way RD described the scene and characters could not have been more clear...

Silas is so much.....to look at, feel, and live for..... but totally worth it.

I sank my fangs in and fell in love!!!! I finished in one day. I could not put it down. The relationships in this book.. whoooweee... then the spice 8 peppers. It was hot and spicy, and I could not get enough.

Thank you RD for letting me read this ahead of it release. I'll be re-reading this for sure.

forbidden vampire romance meets the walking dead

this was such a rush yet a bit of a slow burn for the main characters and i absolutely loved it !! although the plot did get a bit confusing and lost at some point it picked back up again.

i went into this sort of blind besides knowing it was a vampire romance 🖤 it shocked me to my core finding out about the post apocalypse and zombies twist !! it was such a rush omg

this is a dark vampire romance, forbidden, human blood bag fmc, military vampire mmc, post apocalypse, zombies, virus, sexual assault (not between main characters), the main characters have other sexual partners in the beginning, he falls first, blood play, praise, degradation, touch her and die, “MY WIFE”, yummy tension, suicidal thoughts, attempted suicide, violence, gore, survival, and dual pov 🩸

honestly juliet i loved how she fought back in the end and how she found herself again. i literally don’t know how in the hell she stayed sort of sane while being a literal human blood bag 😭 i would’ve actually freaked the fuck out omg !!! the way her pov was written actually hit me in my core. she’s so relatable in many ways but she also shows a side she’s never dipped in before. the adrenaline rush throughout this book had me flipping through pages so locked in 😩😩 … SILAS 🥵 yuppppp this man is FINE AS FUCK 🤌🏼 he’s such a perfect book boyfriend. he has his questionable moments but he redeems himself LOL 😂 i simply couldn’t stop yearning to see more of their moments together !! this man is the definition of “touch her and your heads will start rolling” !!!

these two are ride or die for each other and i’m all here for it 🤩 silas is so protective over juliet. he always looks for her in a crowded room. and juliet is always thinking of him. she so drawn to him like a moth to a flame. they’re so electric and their love for each other never falters !! the out of the blue “my husband” and “my wife” actually had me by the god damn neck omg 😍

the zombie apocalypse twist ?!!!? such a great storyline and setting holy fuck 😍 that was actually the thing that had me running to read this !! ugh i love r.d. baker’s books 🖤🖤

i’m sad this is over 🥹 i love them so much and that ending was pure perfection !!

Oh my goodness, where do I begin?? Lemme just break it down for you:
Spice level 11/10
Drama and tension 10/10
Enemies to lovers speed run ✅️
HEA? ... well, that would be a spoiler.

Silas and Juliet's tale will take your breath away as they navigate their own traumatic realities and the gradual obsessive love that grows into dangerous codependence between them. Honestly, pay attention to the trigger warnings, I did have to put the book down about 40-45%ish of the way through, as it resonated a bit too strongly for me. But I'm glad I picked it up again, as Juliet recovers from her experience and begins to have hope for a life beyond her old life in the compound as a bloodbag.

Silas' backstory had me sobbing ngl. His addictive personality and that he /feels/ so intensely makes him an addictive character in himself.

Overall, such a good read - not that I expected any less from RDB!! ✨️🩷

The world is infected and everything has gone to crap. Silas is a "feeder" or vampire tasked with "taking care" of the humans who are being held against their will in a facility for blood production. Juliet is a human being used for her blood. She's special. He's obsessed. They get together and you know the rest.

Let me start by saying I REALLY enjoyed this book but there were a few things that ruined it for me and I docked 2 stars as a result.

- the length?!? WHY is this so long? There were SO MANY repetitive parts it was crazy.

- having the male lead sleep with other women. Like I get it, it's a dark romance but my guy shacks up with his fuckbuddy like 3 times and we hear about it in detail. Same with Juliet, she's with another guy for like half the book and it takes forever for them to get together. Not really my thing.

- ANGEL. he calls Juliet angel LITERALLY like 1000 times and with how repetitive the story got in the middle it drove me mad.

- Rape / suicide attempts. There was a trigger warning which I appreciate but I don't think these issues were handled very well and they didn't really add anything to the story IMO

- I kind of wish we got more relationship depth. We see Silas, he's got, tattoos, he's intense and dark with a British accent (anyone else seeing Oli Sykes from bring me the horizon, but like super buff and tall?) but that's all we get. There's barely any look into why he likes her aside from how good she smells and lust. There's not much bonding etc.

- Juliet gets really boring after a while. She seems like a super cool, sexually liberated character at first but after a few chapters all I know about her is she's blonde, super pretty, all the guys want her, she was a twin and she's a swimmer. Like that's it. She also gets whiny and needy and it got really old.

- too much smut. Let me just say I LOVE THE SMUT. The smuttier the better is usually my thing, but this just felt like overkill. The leads were basically fucking like rabbits the whole time when the plot got slow and it got old quickly.

This book would have been perfect if it had been cut down and refined a bit but still a good read.

Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spicy content 🌶🌶🌶🌶/5

I really enjoyed this book. this is a totally fresh spin on vampire and human romance, set in a world torn apart by a mega-virus that didn’t just end life as we know it, it corrupted it.
The virus didn’t just bring about an apocalypse, it turned vampires into zombie-like monsters. And now, Juliet is just another human surviving in the ruins, used and seen as nothing more than a “blood bag.”

But then there’s Silas.

He’s dangerous in all the right ways, still a vampire, but one who chooses to break the rules, especially when it comes to Juliet. The chemistry between them is intense, and their connection pulled me in immediately.
Silas is the kind of character who brings light into a very dark world even though he doesn't think he does, but he never feels too good to be true. He's powerful, unpredictable, and real. And he has so many layers to him that I wanted to know everything!

What I really appreciated is how this book was paced. From the very first page, it grabbed me and didn't let go. I read the whole thing in one sitting because I simply couldn't stop. The tension, the danger, the romance, it all just works.

But please also heed the trigger warnings as there are some heavy things in this book and your mental health matters :)

If you're into post-apocalypticish stories with morally complex characters, high stakes, and a romance that burns hot in the middle of chaos, Afflicted is absolutely worth reading.

Afflicted RD Baker is a vampire paranormal romance. I spent all day devouring this book. It was one of the best vampire romance novels I have read in a long time. Trust me vampires are my favorite supernatural creature so I am picky. It is set in a zombie/vampire like post apocalyptic world where vampires rule over humans.
The plot and character development were spot on for a dark paranormal romance. From beginning to end this book was just everything a dark paranormal romance strives to be. The world building was done so that you could imagine it all as you read.
Silas is a morally grey vampire whom sets his sights on Juliet. At first this is an enemies to lovers slow burn romance but when the spice hits it hits hard. There is an extremely exciting and intriguing plot to go along with their love story.
RD Baker really blew me away with this story. I can not wait to see what else she has in store in the future.

The way I finished this book in one sitting. It’s so difficult for me to find a book that makes me want to ignore everything in my life to get through all the pages. I quite literally couldn’t put it down, and I loved every second of it.

The relationship between Juliet and Silas was so complicated. There were times I hated them both, but also completely understood where they were coming from. I would like to keep this spoiler free, so I’ll say that the journey they went on that drastically changed from the first half to the second half of the book, was all such a whirlwind. I was chewing off my fingers trying to read as quickly as I could because I NEEDED to know how their story played out.

It was beautiful, sexy, emotional, spicy…everything I love in a book and more. 6/5

I genuinely really enjoyed this book. Baker does a great job of intertwining smut with the real world human emotions that come with the supernatural and post apocalyptic world that it is set in. Sensitively holding space for topics like rape, suicide and ptsd in a way that highlights the very real consequences for victims and the ones who love them. There were times that I felt the pace was a bit all over the place (hence why it is not a 5 star) but it didn’t stop me from enjoying the plot and the development of the characters

RD has done it again with such an amazing story. Silas is absolutely swoonful in his way with Juliet. Everything they go through separately and together is horrible, but has made them grow in such a way that makes their relationship feel oddly natural but insane at the same time, lol.

Afflicted is Definitely an addictive read from start to finish!

My feelings were soso in the first third, afraid it'll be a cliche or predictable, but I ended up really liking it ! I liked that they developed a somewhat of a friendship before giving into their feelings and attraction to one another. And despite their dumb luck, there was no telling how their story would end, with everything stacked against them. Pretty good read overall 🖤
