Will they be able to escape with their lives...and their hearts?

Firelight Ridge has always felt like another world to Doctor Ani Devi—but now things are getting even stranger. Military members have suddenly appeared in town and she was just questioned about a man she treated at the airport. Sure, she’d rather nurse the emotional wounds that sent her fleeing to the remote Alaska outpost, but she can’t abandon her job, and the strange events are a worthy distraction. Though she never imagined her search for answers would land her on the doorstep of a wildly attractive stranger.

Gil McGowan is a born protector, so when his friend Victor begs him for help right before he disappears, Gil is determined to find out what’s going on. Maybe it would be easier without a beautiful woman along, but he promised Victor he’d protect Ani—from what, he wouldn’t say. Gil is sure Victor’s being paranoid, until he and Ani barely escape an explosion on the shores of Smoky Lake. Things just got real, and more dangerous than they know.

Now Gil and Ani are racing against time and from enemies unknown to unravel a mystery that started deep in the Alaskan permafrost and now threatens the town of Firelight Ridge—while fighting chemistry hot enough to light up Smoky Lake.

This story had me gripped from the first page and what a wild ride it was. As the next book in the Firelight Ridge series, Smoky Lake takes us on an adventure of mystery, hope and bravery with Gil and Ani. I couldn't wait to get to learn more about Ani, as her interactions in previous books made me a bit curious about her full backstory. What an incredible woman, who used her childhood pain to help others. We also meet Gil McGowan, a born protector who is visiting his twin brother in Firelight Ridge. Immediately Ani and Gil are thrown together to help track down a missing friend who may be ill and boy do sparks fly, literally and figuratively. I loved the passion and vulnerability that they both showed each other. This was romantic suspense at it's finest and I hope we see more of this from Jennifer Bernard. Well done!!

5 Star Review Smoky Lake (Firelight Ridge #3) by Jennifer Bernard

Book three in the latest series from Jennifer Bernard and I couldn’t put it down. This was a well written, romantic suspense story that ticked all the boxes for me. From the first chapter to the last I was riveted to Doctor Ani Devi and Gil McGowan’s story. You cannot help but become invested in the story that Ms. Bernard wove.

There were equal amounts of suspense and romance and I loved it. The writing is descriptive and I found myself easily picturing Firelight Ridge, Alaska whilst reading.

I love mysteries and this was a good example of the rom suspense genre and I for one cannot wait for the next book to release.

Smoky Lake by Jennifer Bernard, book three in her Firelight Ridge series, was an amazing romantic suspense, filled with charm, intrigue, and twists and turns that kept me engaged and guessing right up to the very end. This is Doctor Ani Devi and Gil McGowan’s story. All of Ani’s friends are currently living in Firelight Ridge and at the end of Fire Peak, she stayed to help assist with the medical care of some residents.

Ani has been through so much in her life, a racist attack when she was younger to now with her marriage ending in a divorce she isn't sure of the direction of her life; return to Indiana to practice pediatric medicine or is there something else waiting for her. Recently on a flight back to see her friends in Firelight Ridge, she bumps into an ill rambling man; a simple action that sets a chain of events into motion that Ani never saw coming. This man, Victor, told her to trust no one other than a man named Gil. She thought the encounter odd and forgot about it, until the military showed up at her door asking questions. Gil McGowan is also temporarily living in Firelight Ridge; on leave from his government position and staying with his twin brother, Lachlan. When Ani comes to his brother's remote home in search of him, he can't help question what she could possibly need from him. Gil sees Ani, really sees her from the moment they meet. He is a strong and resourceful man, who watches over and protects Ani as if she is his world. Together, Ani and Gil are on a quest to understand what Victor was involved in since the government and many others want to talk to him. Ani and Gil are on a roller coaster ride as they try to figure out the mystery virus that is infecting the people of Firelight Ridge and could be used for biowarfare.

Smoky Lake was a fun and exciting journey that was full of passion, adventure, heart pounding mystery and excitement. One minute you are at the edge of your seat because Ani and Gil are up against mercenaries to the next when you are holding your breath with their flirty words and heated looks to the comedy of John, Ani's ex-husband's encounter with Gil. With numerous twists and turns I was unable to put the book down and now I can’t wait to read Lila’s story and see what is in store for her.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

This is the 3rd book in the Firelight Ridge series featuring the thrilling page-turning adventure between Gil and Ani. This story is riveting it grabs your your attention from the first page until the last. Firelight Ridge has been such a fun series and Smoky Lake was no exception. This is Dr. Ani Devi's story. All of her friends are currently living in Firelight Ridge and at the end of Fire Peak, she stayed to help assist with the medical care of some residents. Ani has been going through a tough time with her marriage ending in a recent divorce and isn't sure where life will lead her now. Will she continue to live in Indiana and practice medicine there or is there something different on her horizon? On a recent flight back to see her friends she bumps into a fellow traveler and that simple action sets a chain of events into motion that Ani never saw coming. Gil McGowan is also temporarily living in Firelight Ridge. He's on leave from his government position and staying with his brother. When Ani comes to his brother's remote home in search of him, he can't help to question what she could possibly need from him. And this fellow readers, is where our adventure begins! Smoky Lake was a fun and exciting journey. You will see characters from the two previous books in the series as well as some fun new ones. I loved the suspense aspect of this story as well as the chemistry between Ani and Gil. They are two wonderful characters individually but together, they are magic! Smoky Lake was told from dual POV and stands alone in the series however, because there has been an underlying plotline, I recommend reading all of the books in order. It was fun, exciting, intriguing and plenty of heat and heart!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the story of Gil and Ani. This is the third book in the Firelight Ridge Series. I have read the first and somehow missed the second book. But I will be going back and reading this one. I loved both the books that I read but this one was my favorite. If you have read the second book then you know who these characters are and that Ani is Dr who stayed in Alaska to help with residents medical care. I was able to figure that out. But again I wish I had read the second book. She is also a little lost as her marriage is over and she is divorced. She was a Dr that practiced in Indiana but now is in Alaska and she isn't sure where life is going to take her. Who would have ever thought that a flight to go see her friend who set in motion things that she never had a way of seeing coming. Gil is in the same boat as Ani. He is a temporary resident of Firefight, Alaska to stay with his brother and take a break from his government job. When she comes looking for Gil needing help he can't figure out what she could need from him. However, he soon finds himself with her trying to keep themselves alive and trying to figure out what is exactly going on. This was a great book that keeps you guessing and hanging on every word. I have to say too that these two characters have some amazing chemistry that there dealing with on top of everything else. This book had me hooked and I didn't lay it down until I was finished.

Smoky Lake had me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. Full of suspense and mystery, twists and turns, it was very exciting!

Ani Veri and Gil McGowan are just plain fun as a couple, which was the levity that I needed, while these two were solving a nail biting mystery. Now, I won't even claim to understand most of the scientific things that happened in this book 😂 I will totally leave that to the scientists - and Jennifer who totally did her homework, but that is the wonderful thing about reading fiction, I don't have to understand the big facts. I can lose myself in the story and not worry about things like science...Whew, do I know science is not the job future for me 😉 Yeah!! Fiction for the win. 🎉 But I totally understood the gist of what the bad guys were doing and why Ani and Gil were working together to stop them. 🙌

On that note...this book can be terrifying at times because things like a virus outbreak...where have I possibly heard about this 🤔...could happen 😂. I mean I'm not a scientist, I just read a lot...of romance that is 😉 Getting to that...Ani and Gil, while caught in the midst of a crazy case, these two find a love unlike anything they've ever known. I certainly understand that part and loved these two together.

Suspense, mystery, romance and small town vibes all rolled into one great book. Don't miss it!

The 3rd book in the Firelight Ridge series is fabulous! Showcasing the Alaskan wilderness as only Jennifer Bernard, an Alaskan, can do.

Ani Devi, is fresh off a divorce and has come to Alaska to help and take comfort from her friends in the small town of Firelight Ridge. At a small airport near her destination, her medical training comes in handy when a man exhibits odd behaviors and tell her to trust no one except Gil McGowan. She doesn't think much about it until she meets Gil and he has been told to keep Ani safe, by the same man Ani treated at the airport!

Now we're off to an exciting and suspenseful story involving the possible weaponization of a virus, run ins with the military and the CDC, missiles, fire fights, as well as players that want to use the virus to sell to other nations! The overarching romance began in the blink of an eye for Gil, while Ani had difficulties thinking someone would want her. Her dedication to Gil as he suffered through the virus was just wonderful.

I work in medical research and Ms. Bernard did a masterful job detailing the scientific references and making them understandable to everyone! I loved it.

This book can be read as a standalone, but there are references to people from prior books and the reader might benefit from reading the first two book in this series.

A wild, on-the-edge-of-your-seat ride! And I felt like I was right smack dab in the middle of Alaska for this story. Loved it! The descriptions of the land are so lifelike, I wanted to jump on a plane for a visit. Lots of action going on that brings two people, Ani and Gil together, in the most delicious, exciting way. There were times I was holding my breath for these two.

This story is Ani’s turn in this series. It is a standalone but for me, I enjoy reading about previous characters when they step into a “next” story. Ani has some surprises in store, considering she came to Alaska to...hide? Forget? Catch her breath? Her backstory got me as it can happen to anyone, and it truly resonated with me. And Gil, what a hunk! A real life government agent and protector. And he has a twin – even if that twin is a fraternal one, they still are a pair. I’d want him in my corner.

Ani and Gil smell something fishy in the goings on around Smoky Lake. Ani sticks her nose in and (let’s call it) joins forces with Gil It is truly a wild ride that I loved. Fun, intrigue, friends, new-to-you folks that trust you because, well, one of their own does. And bad guys, of course! A great “love story” with a dash of trouble – I thoroughly enjoyed!

This series just gets better with each book!
This is the third book in the Firelight Ridge series, and it was amazing! This book sucks you in from the very first page and keeps you on your toes throughout the entire book! This is Ani Devi’s story and we really get to know her better and what makes her such a wonderful woman. Ani has been through so much in her life that you just can’t help but love her and cheer her on through everything that she has to go through in this book. She is one strong and incredible woman. Then there’s Gil McGowan who sees Ani, really sees her from the moment he meets her. This is one strong and resourceful man and the way that he watches over and protects Ani will set your heart on fire. He is totally swoon worthy. This story has so much going on with the mystery of a virus, that you will find yourself trying to figure out what is going on right along with Ani and Gil. So many twists and turns that I just could not put the book down until I could figure out what was going on and how they were going to save the day. Now I’m dying to read Lila’s story and see what is in store for her.

This is the third book in the Firelight Ridge series, but I think it also could be read as a stand alone book. In this book we meet Ani, the pediatrician, in town to help her friends. While traveling to Alaska she meets a strange man at an airport who seemed very sick so she offered him some help. The rambling man told her to trust no one other than a man named Gil. She thought the encounter odd and forgot about it, until the military showed up at her door asking questions. After that she decided to go in search of Gil and finds herself in a crazy quest to understand the rambling of a brilliant suddenly missing man, that the government and many others want to talk to. This book was full of passion, adventure, and heart pounding mystery and excitement. And for those of us following the series, it was so exciting to watch Ani come into her own and find someone worthy of her after all she has been through. A wonderful book, and I can’t wait to read Lila’s book next! I received an ARC, and this is my honest review.

This is the third book in the Firelight Ridge series and is a great addition. Bernard has an excellent writing style, gives an excellent plot line with the romance you love and overall just an good read.

This book follows Ani who shows up in the previous two books as one of the core friend group that this series is about. She is a doctor, recently divorced and a bit at loose ends. Enter Gil who we meet in this book who is on leave from his diplomatic security job after being shot. The two are thrown together when a potential biohazard threat occurs. They learn they can trust each other but aren't sure who else to trust. The two go through quite the range of tests and trials to figure out what is really going on and to try to stop it. Plus at the same time learn about each other and how they could possibly have a future together.

Overall an easy and fast read. Great plot along with the romance which is nice. Definitely would recommend especially if you're keeping up with the series.

This series keeps getting better. Gil and Ani meet when she shows up on his brother’s doorstep, right after he was told to keep her safe. Ani has always been on the quiet side, but she is turning over a new leaf now that she is divorced. Her ex did a number on her self esteem, so she isn’t sure if she can trust her own judgment.

While talking about a mutual acquaintance, mysterious people show up and they have to decide to stay or go on the run. They choose the latter. While gone, they experience a myriad of obstacles and challenges, but somehow they grow closer.

The twists and turns this story takes you on will keep you guessing. What exactly is going on in Firelight Ridge that there are military personnel, scientists, viruses and danger around every corner? Who can they trust? Will they have the chance to admit how they feel? A must read, action packed story.

I received an ARC and this is my honest, voluntary review.

Now this was a book! Lots of drama, suspense, intrigue, detainment without cause or explanation by the intelligence arm of the army, foreign espionage, bullets flying, kidnapping, bad guys to overcome, and by the way, throw in some finding of a soulmate, hot sex, and a HFN leading to a HEA, all within the confines of was it even 10 days(?) timeframe, and you get another fantastic addition to the Firelight Ridge series!!! The mystery of Ani's past is revealed, and we meet hot, hot, Gil, who has got to be the most perfect man ever created by putting pen to paper. Too bad he wasn't actually real.
Three down, one to go...unless Jen starts in on the quirky residents, which would make for some really entertaining and revealing reading. Please, please.

I liked the other 2 books in the series, but not so much this one. It was too convoluted. I will read the next book as I liked the previous 2.

Gil and Ani bought 2 vehicles, bought groceries, food, lodging, etc. Just how much cash did they have as they were not using credit cards? Why would Gil have that much cash on hand? I do not remember it being stated that he grabbed cash before he took off to Smoky Lake.

In the cabin they woke to it being dark outside. The sergeant used a flashlight. It does not get dark in Alaska in July. I have been there in July. It is sort of twilight. You can see just enough without using a flashlight and it does not get completely dark.

The book was an okay read but I kept checking how many more pages to go, which I did not do with the other two books. But I did read it without skimming pages and skipping chapters.

You hit the ground running in this adrenaline pumping saga in the Alaskan wilderness. Each book in the series gets better and better as you get more familiar with the characters and Firelight Ridge. You will want to protect the people and their home as much as they do.

The story is fascinating and timely in today's crazy world. I am amazed at how much research must have gone into this plot to be able to give comprehensible details without overwhelming and drowning out the budding romance between Ani and Gil, which I adore. Gil is a natural protector in his personal life and career. Ani, the pediatrician is re-examining her life post divorce. Their paths cross due to a very ill scientist, Victor and that leads them into a dangerous adventure where lives are at stake.

I love how one minute you are at the edge of your seat because Ani and Gil up against mercenaries to holding your breath with their flirty words and heated looks to the comedy of John, Ani's ex-husband's encounter with Gil. You will fly through the pages of Smoky Lake without a dull moment.

This is the third book in this impressive series, and this is Ani and Gil’s story.
Ani is a doctor who is concerned when members of the military start to arrive in town, and Gil is a born protector, and when his friend begs for help before he disappears, Gil is determined to get the answers he seeks. Ani and Gil find themselves in a race against time to unravel the mystery happening in town.
This is a well written slow burn, action packed story, with family, friendships, angst, mystery, emotions, danger, suspense, intrigue, undeniable chemistry, humor, witty banter, and twists, which leads to an entertaining, unpredictable, and enthralling small town romance, which kept me guessing throughout.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

SMOKY LAKE was a wild ride from beginning to end! I sped through the pages, hating to put it down, as Ani and Gil negotiated the mystery that brought them together. Jennifer Bernard writes some of the most fun characters… from Ani and Gil to Ani’s best friends and their significant others to Gil’s brother to the residents of Firelight Ridge, the characters will have you invested in the story from beginning to end.
Smoky Lake is the third in Bernard’s Firelight Ridge series. If you haven’t read them, you won’t be lost as it stands on its own, but I highly recommend grabbing the first two, because they are just as fun.
Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of the novel. All opinions are my own and freely given.

Once again drama and chaos encompasses this small Alaskan town. This time Ani's at the center of it when she chatted with someone at the airport before arriving. Something so begin as that, turned her whole world around. She, along with Gil, who she picked up quickly after arriving in town, ended up going all over the area trying to get away from the bad guys, so many potential bad guys it was crazy! In doing so they fall for each other, because of course, this is a romance book, but they also were trying to figure out if there was a disease that could take everyone out. It was so over the top, yet very real. In the end, things got figured out, the real bad guys dealt with and the community safe again.

With the end of her marriage Ani is facing a crossroad in her life. Hoping to get some clarity she decides a visit to Firelight Ridge where she can reconnect with some friends will give her the answers she needs. When she uses her medical skills, she never expected the adventure or romance it would bring into her life.

Gil is spending some time with his brother in Firelight when Ani comes into his life because his friend sent her to him. They now find themselves working as a team while they try to uncover the truth of what really happened before the damage becomes more widespread.

Romance, suspense that keeps you guessing and action that keeps you on edge combine into an intriguing storyline that features two compelling characters and the love they find in each other.

I am loving this new series set in Firelight Ridge, the mystery/suspense mixed with romance is so good! This time we got Ani’s story and it was fabulous. Ani gets connected with Gil when she gets a middle of the night visit from the police. The adventure that Ani and Gil go on is a doozy. They are basically on the run for their life and to figure out who is trying to cause harm to Firelight Ridge. The attraction between Ani and Gil is immediate and so strong even though they both try to ignore it.
This whole series has been fabulous, the books are hard to set down. I am hoping the next book is Lila and Bear’s…. Fingers crossed!

What a fabulous series this is! We have Ani Devi's story and her love interest, Gil McGowan, though the characters from the previous two books are also there in the story. It is highly descriptive and had me searching for images of Alaska!
This suspenseful, fast-moving book has mysteries to be solved and thrills associated with that mystery. Ani comes more and more out of her shell that her marriage and divorce have caused her to build around herself, and it is so much fun to see it happening. Gill is just great! He seems a bit grumpy initially, but that isn't anywhere near his true character. He is caring, protective, and, like Ani, determined, courageous, and a great problem solver. Their adventure is fun, intriguing, and a further reason to totally love this series! 💖💖💖💖💖

Smoky Lake is an amazing read. I loved this one so much. If you haven't read the Firelight Ridge series yet go do so. This is book 3 Ani's story. I love how Ani does not hesitate to step in the middle of everything. Gil is protective of Ani from the very beginning. I love their chemistry and banter throughout this one. Danger and twists just bring Ani and Gil closer. This Alaskan series is one you don't want to miss. I love Ani and her friends so much. They all seem to get themselves into sticky situations. I love Ani's strength through everything. Gil is so amazing. I could not put this down. Go one click this today.

I love my visits to Firelight Ridge and I was excited for book three in the series. Smoky Lake did not disappointed and Doctor Ani Devi and Gil McGowan’s journey was everything I expected and so much more. If you love romantic suspense look no further than this great read.
The writing is strong, the characters are easy to relate to but it was the mystery that added another layer. Ms Bernard is a very talented author and she paints pictures with her words that leave you feeling like you are actually in Firelight Ridge, Alaska.
Looking forward to what’s to come in my next visit to Alaska.

A fast-paced story with non-stop intrigue and suspense. When an Alaskan State Trooper knocks on her hotel room door with questions about someone she met briefly in the airport, Ani doesn’t realize her world is going to be upended within hours.

Ani and Gil team up to find his brother’s friend/colleague and to solve a mystery while staying one step ahead of anyone who may be tracking them.

Reading the 2 prior books in the series is strongly recommended to have a better idea of the connections and backstory of Ani and her friends and their significant others.

I loved this one. Andi and Gil are amazing together!!! Andi has been one of my favorites of these four friends. Then again they are all my favorites. But Andi has this air to her. She seems more fragile than the rest but this story shows how wrong I was. Her ability to do and analyze everything going on here is amazing. I don’t want to say more because I don’t want to give anything away.
Gil is the perfect match for her. He treats her so much more of what she should have been treated like by her no good ex. PLUS he protects her like she is his everything even though they just met.
Just know this about this book… I loved the adventure. I loved the romance. I loved the story.

This is Book #3 in the Firelight Ridge romantic suspense series but can be read as a stand alone. It’s an exciting fast paced book; Ani and Gil are likeable characters and you can’t help wanting the best for them and their new relationship. The action is suspenseful and will keep you on the edge of your chair as you continue reading and follow the twists and turns. While it can be read as a standalone, be warned it will make you want to read the rest of the series! I really love their girl friendship group.

This was amazing! Action and suspense at its best.

Dr Ani runs from her troubles to the remote Alaskan town but now trouble finds her there, when Protector Gil and Ani team up to find out what's going on in their town.

This is a book I couldn't put down. The action and suspense was top notch and kept me enthralled from start to finish. I really wanted to know more about these characters so I was interested in this book.

Very well done. Gil and Ani were a wonderful couple and I enjoyed their dynamic. Great plot and a slow build romance I would get behind.

Fantastic!!

Ani is a doctor who has moved to Alaska to be with her friends after a bad divorce. When she runs into a sick man at the airport, she wonders what happened to him. When she meets Gil, he tells her his friend asked him to keep her safe. Gil is determined to do a good job, but he has no idea what they are getting into. When he finds that his friend & his twin brother have been working on something that could be used as a bioweapon, things go from bad to worse.
This was an interesting read that kept me turning the pages until the end.
