This book is every bit as fabulously silly and hilarious as you'd hope from the title, and my 7-year-old and I devoured it, reading the whole book within a single day and (both of us!) giggling hysterically at various points. It's a REALLY fantastic read-aloud - I think sharing it that way made it feel even funnier! - and the art (by Sheena Dempsey) is every bit as spot-on hilarious as the text (by Swapna Haddow).
But really, the key point is that the very moment we finished this book, my 7-year-old asked: "Is there going to be a second book? WHEN will there be a second book? There should be LOTS of books in this series!"
What a hilarious treat this is. This is such s great author illustrator pairing, so much fun, great jokes at just the right level of humour for beginning chapter book readers. More please, I need more bad pandas in my life. 😀
Many thanks to the publisher for sending me an early copy.
I really enjoyed this. Lin, the best panda is shipped across the world to a new zoo, but all she wants is to get home to be with her brother… surely being bad is all it takes to get her shipped back home? This is funny in all the right ways. This is told in narrative and comic strip format this is going to appeal to LOADS of kids! Illustrations by Sheena Dempsey are spot on!
I’m a huge Dave Pigeon fan so a new series from dynamic duo, Swapna Haddow and Sheena Dempsey, was always going to be a treat. Bad Panda is filled with crazy anarchic humour, and delightfully illustrated throughout – with fabulous little ‘comic’ spreads in there too to mix it all up. So much fun. And there’s more coming too. This is going to be another pure joy of a series.
Bad Panda by Swapna Haddow was silly as can be, a mix of graphic novel style at times with more text-heavy sections like an early chapter book, and really a dream for the mischievous among us. Lin is such a darling and perfect panda, she finds herself being sent to the zoo, away from her family. Knowing her adorable perfection got here there, she decides that being a complete rotter of a panda will get her out. The writing is raucous, her antics are fabulously naughty, and she also wins you over with her intentions to get home to her brother.
Checked out at library in consideration for Cybils Award Early Chapter book shortlist for 2021.
*Would probably have given it a full five stars, but the references are her brother making a very large "dump" in the parking lot are a bit too crude for our preferences. I know she's trying to be a bad panda, but we can't cross the line too far in these early kid chapter books. I'm still a mom, after all. If you don't mind the crude potty talk, this will have you rolling (I mean, if you're a complete rotter).
I give this book 5 stars because it is a really good and funny book. It is suitable for young kids and older ones. The characters have brilliant names, like Liony McLion-face and Prince Googleybrain Sizzlepants Ninja Mallet-Face Wheely Schmeely Pancakeness Snotball Jelly! This book is an easy read because it has a mix of words and pictures and even comic strips! Lin is trying hard to be bad, but even when she does bad things like chasing pigeons people always say “Ah that baby panda is SO CUTE!” She is born at a panda sanctuary but is moved to a zoo because she is the cutest panda in the WORLD! She is sadly separated from her brother (Face-Like-a-Bag-of-Potatoes) who gets to life a peaceful panda life. I am really excited for more books in this series! By Ella aged 9
As an adult with no kids, probably not best placed to rate this children's book. I was expecting it to be funnier. Not sure it gives out a good message, might encourage children to be naughty. Hmm. Good illustrations
I read aloud every night with my two children, who are 9 and 7. This was just an OK read for us. It had its moments that made us laugh, but overall, it wasn't a book we looked forward to every night. I think we'll skip the sequel. We much prefer the Grimwood series by Nadia Shireen.
Lin, the famed cutest panda in the world is doing everything in her power to be bad. Why you ask? Read this funny early chapter book with fantastic illustrations to find out and do your best not to fall in love with her. 4.5 stars
