The World of Click #3

Besties: Prank War

Rate this book
From the New York Times bestselling World of Click by Kayla Miller comes a graphic novel about besties Trent and Sawyer. When they accidentally start a classwide prank war, the boys need to get especially crafty if they’re going to come out on top—with all of their friendships intact.

Trent and Sawyer make their Besties series debut with a bang and a crash! These two friends never back down from a challenge, whether it presents itself at the skate park or in the school hallway, but will that determination get them in over their heads?

Between helping with their friend Tyler’s RPG campaign, catching streams of pro skateboarder Trixie Sampson’s new video series, and—oh yeah—homework, Trent and Sawyer are more than a little busy…but when Trixie announces a competition that might result in the boys getting to meet her and her crew, how could they resist entering?!

The duo become single-minded in their quest to be the lucky “Trixsters” to win the prize, but it’s not easy pulling off the perfect prank and capturing it on video. With their friends growing resentful of being unwilling targets and after drawing the ire of the class prank queen, Nat, the buddies soon find themselves losing at their own game. As an all-out prank war spins out of control, Trent and Sawyer realize they might have pranked themselves by starting it.

New York Times bestselling author Kayla Miller, coauthor Jeffrey Canino, and illustrator Sarah Turner, with her playful and expressive art style, deliver another vibrant and unique portrayal of middle school friendship in this latest title in the Besties series.

Thank you @NetGalley and @HarperCollinsChildren'sBooks for the ARC. I have been a fan of Kayla Miller since her first book. The characters are so relatable and funny. My students devour these books. Trent and Sawyer decide to win a visit with their skateboarding hero by entering a prank war contest. Yet, not all their friends are on bored to be part of their pranks. Trent and Sawyer prank Nat and she doubles down on their pranks and plans to win the contest herself. A must read.

When I saw that this book was about pranks, I wondered if I wanted to read it at all, though I love the Besties series. And because I loved everything that has come out of that series, I plunged in, despite thinking the very idea of pranking people abhorrent to the highest degree.

The good thing about this story is that despite the two boys loving to prank, the narrative showed the bad that can come with it, and how it hurts others, which was good. And while I know that there is no way to stop pranking int he world of people who want to get seen on social media, at least this story was very clear that the people who were pranking and being pranked did not like it.

And once I realized where this was going, I sat back and enjoyed what happened to the prankers. It also helped when the teachers and parents started to notice too.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. This book is coming out on the 3rd of March.

E ARC provided by Edelweiss Plus

This book set in Olive's school from CLICK focuses on Sawyer and Trent, as well as their friend Tyler. Tyler is very excited about being the Dungeon Master for an upcoming role playing game, but is also a little anxious about this new role. Sawyer, on the other hand, is more interested in the prank challenge issued by his favorite social media star, Trixie. He brings Trent in, which would help his chances of winning the contest if he listened to Trent's thoughts that they need to plan out their pranks. Swayer instead goes ahead with a number of petty, mean tricks, some focused on Natasha. Natasha is also aware of Trixie's challenge and plans better than the boys, so manages to "get" them on several occasions. This makes them want to retaliate. They get so invested in the prank war that they ignore Tyler's requests for help. The teachers at school are not happy, and tell them to stop, but this doesn't dissuade them, even when Trent's younger sister learns from their antics and has to learn why it was inappropriate to dump lemonade on Olive. Things eventually escalate, and someone gets hurt. Is anyone really the winner in a prank war?

I personally disliked this one A LOT, because antics in school can lead to injuries. I recently took a hard tumble because a student pushed another student so violently into me that my feet went out from under me, five Chromebooks I was carrying flew out of my arms, and I came within inches of smacking my head on a cement block wall. The student said he was "just fooling around". School is work, and there is no room for this kind of horseplay in an academic setting. The fact that Natasha got third in Trixie's contest makes pranks look like a good idea.

Will students like this? Absolutely. I did like the subplot about Tyler being ignored, which made the story even sadder when he was the one to get hurt in the prank. The CLICK books are popular, and it's interesting to see other students in the school, but I wish that this book didn't glorify bad behavior. We see enough of that with TikTok videos that lead to destruction of school property.

Besties: Prank War is a charming middle grade graphic novel by Kayla Miller and Jeffrey Canino and illustrations by Sarah Turner.

Though this is technically the third book in The World of Click series, you can absolutely read this as a standalone; I did!

I had a fun time reading this book. The art style was fun and interesting, and there is a pretty diverse range of race, gender presentation, and body type among all of the characters. I loved the variety of color the illustrator used in this novel.

It took my brain a minute to parse the font, though. The lower-case As were throwing me off for a little bit, they looked more like lower-case Ds to me.

All of the characters seemed pretty relatable, and I laughed several times. There was one silly joke that really got me when it came up the third time (gotta love the rule of three). It feels very approachable for its intended audience.

That being said, I think the prank war went on a little long because it started to feel a bit repetitive to me. I also feel like the adults around them (especially the parents) really did not step up to help solve the issue when they absolutely could have.

I received a complimentary copy from The Book Drop. All opinions contained herein are my own.

Back for a third round of the World of Click, with each book focusing on a pair of characters from the Click series. Trent and Sawyer are avid skateboarders who are crushing on pro skateboarder Trish Sampson. Anything Trish says and does is golden in their eyes. When she shows an amazing prank she pulled off on her social media page, she invites her viewers to a prank contest where the grand prize winner will attend the Half Pipe Palooza. Trent and Sawyer have mega plans to pull off the best and biggest prank to win the contest.

At first the pranks smart off small and rather harmless. That is until they pull a prank on Natasha (“Nat”), who is known to be rather fierce with her temper. Nat did not appreciate being the focus of Trent and Sawyer’s prank and turns the tables on them, one-upping them on every one of their pranks. It becomes a prank war, getting to a point where their peers no longer find them amusing or funny, but rather an annoyance. When does this all end? And what will be the final prank to end all pranks?

I enjoyed the story although I am not one who usually likes stories that involve jokes on people or pranks. Admittedly I felt the pranking went on way too long and the parents, teachers and school staff did not handle the shenanigans very well. I did enjoy this illustrator much more than the previous graphic novels. The drawings were delightful and the color was fabulous. I still have difficulty with the font used in this series and the Click series. I always read the ‘a’ as ‘d’ and it can be rather annoying. I wish they would change the fonts to something friendlier. I love the Click series more than this World of Click series but I do appreciate how the World series rotates the focus on different characters.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a review copy.

According to the 9 year old:
This book is awesome and I've read it a bunch of times. I think the characters are funny, and the pranks they do are funny. Some of the kids aren't always nice to each other, and they should be nicer, but at one of them does write a letter saying sorry which is good. (Mom note: she also wants me to find ALL of the other books in the Click world, which is the original book in this larger universe of graphic novels by the same author.)

According to the mom:
This graphic novel was a hit with its intended audience of tween readers! I appreciated that there were lessons about friendship, and that none of the pranks the kids pull are too dangerous or mean.

It did feel repetitive and like it was going on for a long time, with prank after prank after prank. My other complaint is that while most of the characters receive appropriate consequences for their behavior, but there is one who does not; I'm not sure what kids would take away from that, or if it's just me judging the story harshly as a parent.

There is also a very interesting "behind the scenes" section at the end of the book showing the writing and illustrating process. My kiddo was already interested in art, but now wants even more to make her own comics / books with this inspiration.

Thank you to @the.book.drop for the #gifted book.

I have always enjoyed Kayla Miller's click series and I have really enjoyed The World of Click series too. I like seeing what the other characters are up and how Olive is still apart of their stories too.

In this graphic novel, Trent and Sawyer are inspired to begin a prank war by their favorite social media personality. Their practical jokes and pranks don't turn out how they want them to due to lots of different reasons. One is they are not getting the reactions they wanted to get until they get the most dramatic friend's reaction. But that comes with a price and hence a prank war begins. Can they win the prank war and record it to submit it for a chance to win the prize? Or will they hurt their friendships with this prank war and be the ones who are actually being pranked?

I enjoyed this story. My oldest reader is a 6th grader and she got frustrated with the ending that the boys decided to go the passive way towards solving their problem instead of just talking it out with their friend.

I’m a huge fan of Kayla Miller’s Click universe. The illustrations are fantastic with coloring that is a feast for the eyes. This is the first time Trent and Sawyer have taken center stage on the page. The best part about this book is how true to life the social dynamics are for the middle grade reader. In addition to the titular promised pranks there’s friendship, games, schoolwork, student council, extracurriculars, eating in the cafeteria, little siblings, and more… but also a LOT of cringe. My biggest gripe about it this book is the meanness that permeates the pages. The pranks seem to go on forever, which makes the plot suffer from repetition and delaying the inevitable moment when their antics catch up with them. Still, Nat is really the worst and she actually comes out unscathed and even rewarded. I feel so bad for Tyler. I think I wanted fewer pranks and more heartwarming friendship moments of redemption. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC for review.

The only book in the series I’ve read is Click but this works great as a stand-alone and it even has a short list of characters from the series with their attributes on the opening page. I can see why this series is so popular, my cousins love getting the newest releases whenever we go to the library. I’m not a fan of pranks but the message about how “good” pranks are those that are enjoyed by all parties, even the people being pranked, is shared very well. This is especially important in the age of prank streamers.

I don’t love the way that some of the parents are shown participating but I do think it’s done humorously. The lowercase a in the font used in this book can be easily mistaken for a d. I don’t know if this is the font used in the entire series but I am curious if this is something that is impacting dyslexic readers.

This is definitely one I’d give to middle schoolers and upper elementary.

Thank you to the publisher for a gifted copy of this novel; I am happy to share my honest opinion!

📖 Book Review 📖 Once upon a time my kids were epically bad at pranks. As I write this review, there are currently five middle school boys in an all out nerf war with the four girls in my home so things have escalated quite rapidly around here and I certainly have a new appreciation for this beautifully written and illustrated graphic novel. As a parent, this one made me take a step back and appreciate the silly things my kids do, even if sometimes things are loud and messy. Kids are certain to enjoy the graphics and silly pranks in this novel, and woven throughout are meaningful lessons about friendships and life. Besties Prank War is captivating graphic novel that *might* just impart some wisdom with a side of silliness.

Graphic Novel
I received an electronic ARC from HarperCollins Children's Books through NetGalley.
I have enjoyed this series but I didn't care for some parts of the third book. I do get the author's point on pranks that go too far but am disappointed that only two of the characters (the boys)were punished while the third (the girl) was not. Yes, they started the prank war, and, yes, they made foolish and poor decisions but the fact that everyone including family members helped Nat prank the two without consequences does not send the right message. That brought my review down to three stars.
It is a lighter book and I understand that also. Middle grade readers will appreciate the humor and the pranks. They will also understand the message of going too far when someone gets hurt.

Another great installment in Kayla Miller's extensive graphic novel series. My daughter and I were so excited to read this together. Trent and Sawyer are best friends who decide to enter a prank contest for their favorite skater. Unfortunately they prank the wrong person and an uncontrollable Prank War rocks the school. I love Miller's accurate portrayal of school life, relationships, and growth through mistakes. I didn't love the lack of responsible adults and consequences for pranks that could harm others. I can see young readers loving the idea of pranks at school and potentially causing trouble. I used it as a discussion point about friendship, pranks, and fun with my daughter.
Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollinsChildren'sBooks for the digital ARC.

Besties: Prank War is another adorable graphic novel in the Click universe by Kayla Miller. Trent and Sawyer are 2 best friends determined to win a social media contest by performing an epic prank. I really liked this one. It has the awesome illustrations & friendships in all of the graphic novels in this universe. I really liked the way pranks were shown & that the victims feelings were shown afterwards. I think it made a great point that funny pranks are only funny if everyone can laugh.

Thanks to NetGalley, Kayla Miller, and Harper Collins for the chance to read and review. My opinions are my own.

I was a little disappointed that this Besties graphic novel wasn't about Beth and Chandra, I've been enjoying their adventures. And though Trent and Sawyer are fun to read about, and I liked getting to know them a little better, I don't really think they have main character energy. I also found the plot kind of tiring, the pranks just wouldn't stop and it was getting a little boring tbh. Still, this is a great universe, and I enjoy all the characters and the art. So this book wasn't such a bummer that it turned me off of the world of Click!

The messaging of this is very muddled to me. Obviously the prank from the boys at the end was too far, but why is getting lemonade dumped on you treated very seriously, while Nat does many similar or worse pranks and never faces any consequences (same with all of the friends that helped her)?

Looking at it as an adult, I also would have liked to see the parents apologize to their children for letting someone Very mean to their child into their home or even acknowledge that that happened. You are an adult! Be the bigger person!

These things made it a very frustrating read for me, which was disappointing as I've really enjoyed other books in this series.

I would like to thank edelweiss and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I was a fan of the last two books in this series so I was excited to dive into this one. When Trent and Sawyer want to enter a prank contest hosted by skateboarder Trixie Sampson, hilarity ensues, at first... when they prank Nat, everything changes and an all out prank war plagues the school. With each prank getting more and more elaborate, is winning the contest really worth it when they are getting in trouble at school and ignoring other friends. A fun read, can't wait for the next one.

While this book is well written and well illustrated, I did not care for it. There is something about parents participating in or allowing something to take place in their child's safest places, and then turning around and putting your kids in trouble for the same thing somewhere else that just did not sit well with me.
Appropriate and valuable growth did happen in the young characters, which I appreciated. But the parents...

Pranks getting far too out of control, loss of awareness of those around you and I am sorry but what teacher blames the pranked all the time. I got a little frustrated with this one as why could the adults... any of them not see the overt detrimental effect on their children. It was clear that they were struggling to deal with the volume of pranks. While it had a good ending I think the pathway was rather unclear. Not my favourite of the series sadly.

I always enjoy reading these graphic novels by Kayla Miller. Very reminiscent of my time in middle school. For so e reason though Nat really worked my nerves in this book! And so did the parents! What parent allows another child to come into their house and prank their kid? I felt bad for Trent and Sawyer as they kept getting the blame for everything and Nat got off scott free! So i struggled a bit with this one because the “pranking” honestly felt more like bullying.

Book 232: Besties: Prank War by Kayla Miller, Jeffrey Canino

Book 55 of #30booksin30days is a middle grade graphic novel from the World of Click series. This is the second book from this series that I read in September. Got this one from the library.

Quick Take: This book started out too over the top for me, I enjoyed the other books in the series a bit better than this installment. The guys did eventually learn a few things along the way and redeemed the story. 3.5⭐️.

Though I love the Click series, the Besties series isn’t for me. This was my least favorite of the three I’ve read. I think Nat went way overboard and with no consequences, and shame on Sawyer’s parents for allowing her into their home to torment their son. I just didn’t like the writing and meanness in this one.

Another winner from Kayla Miller! The Besties gang features 2 boys, Trent and Sawyer, who love pranks and skateboarding. They decide to enter a contest for the best prankster but they have met their match in another of their friends, Natasha. Middle school hijinks ensue! Hope it doesn’t cause a rash of pranks at your school!

Some of the pranks at the beginning were seriously lame. this story shows how you can open a can of worms; nat isn't the type of person to let things go. but she really skated by on punishment

The moral is good. pranks are only as fun(ny) as you can ensure you're not hurting someone. in the rise of annoying challenges on social media, this is a good reminder.

What I thought was so great about this was how miller shows how easy it is to get caught up in something because you want to be viral in today’s society. She shows how easy it is for anyone to take it too far and how that can affect those around us.

I really enjoyed this one! I love the Click world and love what Kayla Miller always brings forth. Can’t wait for the next one!

This book gave a good lesson not to mess around with your friends. I was expecting the girl besties at first so I was surprised to venture in this journey with the boys. I love how the world comes into one and the click is also in the book! I would definitely recommend this to children

I didn’t like this one anywhere near as much as the others in the Click series. The pranks got to be too much for me to take and the injury wasn’t handled well. The adults were even in on some of the pranks which didn’t sit right with me.

I love a prank war. But this felt quite one sided and almost mean-spirited. Also, a missed opportunity to explain how social media and content creators are not real life.

We’re probably gonna get a Nat book sometime in the future and…. I’m not looking forward to it.

That was a cute installment in "The World of Click" series. It shows a prank war and how it gets a little out of hand. Nothing too unique or novel about it but still an enjoyable read. I can see my students enjoying it as they do the other Click books.

I don't like how Trent and Sawyer had to take the blame for Nat's pranks. They pranked her and when she pranked them back, it should have been even. Nat's just as much to blame but she was victimized in the entire novel.
