Was excited to find the first story in this volume features a mermaid - Asagi has to help her get back her father's demon orb which has been stolen. The second story is also rather good in which a fox-spirit strikes up an unlikely friendship with a sickly aristocrat, but enlists our heroes help when he puts his friend in danger. Although not outright yaoi we do have a homosocial friendship between these two which is as slashy as this series gets. Sadly NOTHING of the major plot gets resolved by the end of this volume, Kurenai doesn't get reunited with his wife and we never really find out why she sealed him in the sword or what happened in the past. The thing is that we actually care - the story is quirky and interesting, like its characters.
