This is a review of the build of the Chinese edition published by Tong Li Comics.

The Viz English edition of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End take too long to release. The individual chapters are already simulpub their reading app, but the graphic novel release lags behind. Thus it already on the 12th volume while the Viz is still up to 10th.

The Tong Li Comics edition come in a smaller trim size than the Japanese release, but by not much. However, that means that I couldn't use the smallest size Booker-kun sleeves for this book. I really want this in sleeves because it comes with an obi and covering it in a plastic sleeve would keep the book, dustjacket, and obi together.

I'm going to reserve my review for the contents when the Viz release comes out, but I can say this is an excellent arc. The most popular character for Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is Himmel the hero, but he already died of old age in the first chapter. Accidental time traveler reunites with her original party in a new adventure. That's it. Feel free to scream in excitement.

literally since starting this series i’ve said to myself “oh how nice would it be if there was a spin off following frieren’s original journey with himmel and the others” ONLY FOR THIS WHOLE VOLUME TO BE JUST THAT 🥹😭🩵 my goddddd and the ending?!? this was such a bittersweet volume, considering frieren is thrust 53 years into the past 🥲

Time waits for no man, but it has reversed itself for Frieren. Having moved back to the past, the older Frieren suddenly finds herself hanging out with her old adventuring buddies before the demon king got killed.

As usual, Frieren ends up with her butt hanging out of a mimic. Automatic five stars.

Luckily, the rest of the story is up to snuff. I was worried that this might feel trite, even if it plays up the wish fulfillment of doing things over you regret or getting more time with the people you care about.

But this is Frieren and I should have more faith by this point. This shoots out of the gate and just doesn’t stop, making for a fun romp that goes on even longer than expected.

For all her past knowledge, Frieren is determined to not violate any of the more obvious rules of time travel. Yet this goes up in smoke very quickly, but it’s rather charmingly tied into just how well her old party knew one another. They can just tell she’s different.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that a demon quickly forces her hand in a really fun fight that has a clever use of powers and one of the best deadpans I’ve seen in a while. It’s truly great stuff, not to mention features one wide shot that’s just gorgeous.

Thus the truth comes out and the arc becomes a quest to get Frieren back to her time. Even knowing what we do about the party, seeing them interact again is a hoot. They typically behave like the most ridiculous D&D party ever and have the functional dysfunction that some of the best friends enjoy.

So this serves a dual purpose of seeing the gang on a new adventure (maybe; causality is out the window here) while letting them see a more powerful, more assured, Frieren. You can tell that they’re happy for her and proud and it’s a testament to their group friendship.

Plus there’s plenty of action and silly fun, along with a cliffhanger that I’m not hugely in love with, but this series gets a huge dollop of leeway from me at this point. There is an out to this that I think has some very interesting poignancy to it and I will be very happy if it goes that way.

I especially liked how this isn’t some melancholic look at time gone by. That’s not how Frieren works. Indeed, her most dejected look this volume is over a rotting grimoire (on brand). She has made a life for herself and wants to return to it.

It might not have the emotional heft of some of the other volumes, but it’s a ton of breezy fun with high adventure and the usual low humour. It does enough with the time travel shenanigans and then uses its clever plotting (no action without reaction, as they say) to fill in the rest.

love waiting multiple months for every new volume just to read it all within 15 minutes. anyways, fun wholesome epic fantasy, my fav ever manga and anime series. back to waiting for the next one again

Frieren accidentally time travels back to her original party and has to figure out how to return to her own time period.

While it is nice to hang with Himmel and company and gauge how much Frieren has changed and grown as a person since her time with them, I reallyreallyreallyreally missed Fern and Stark. Or at least I did until that secret fantasy shipping cliffhanger . . .

I'm soooooo happy I have the next volume on hand right now.

I really enjoyed this as always. Not as jam packed insane as the last few volumes but still great. Basically a go back in time story, get to see Frieren with her party back in the day. It's nice to see, and also charming to see her with someone who she loves even if she doesn't know it. Overall interesting ending as some of the pieces of shit demons know Frieren has traveled back in time, leaving us in a new situation.

J’attendais cette suite impatiemment à cause du cliffhanger de fin du 11e tome. Attention d’ailleurs, car cet avis contient des spoilers si vous n’avez pas lu les tomes précédents. Je préfère vous prévenir.

Donc, Frieren retrouve ses anciens amis à cause d’un sort lié à une pierre qu’elle a touchée. J’admets que je pensais naïvement que l’intrigue serait centrée sur son envie de retourner dans sa ligne temporelle, mais finalement, elle va se retrouver à vivre de nouvelles aventures avec eux. Si j’ai adoré voir en temps « réel », Himmel et les autres, ça m’a tout de même surprise. Et puis, je me pose des questions comme, qu’est devenu la Frieren de leur ligne à eux ? Est-ce la même, mais comment ? On apprend à mieux connaître ces personnages qui vivent dans le souvenir de notre elfe préféré.

Et sinon, c’est sûr que je n’ai pas boudé mon plaisir, surtout à la fin de ce tome, car nous avons encore un cliffhanger, mais sur quelque chose à laquelle je ne m’attendais pas vraiment.

Dans l’ensemble, j’ai passé un bon moment. C’est plaisant, même si j’ai l’impression de lire un aparté, un peu du genre « fanservice ». Curieuse de voir où la suite va nous mener.

A travel back to the past? This is such a nice treat! I've always wanted to meet the hero party, not just glimpses from Frieren's memories but the actual hero party. Thank you, sensei, for giving us this. The last chapter, tho... still hurts up to this day. "My magic can even bring into fruition an idyllic dream that one has already abandoned accepting that it would never come true." You know what idyllic dream it is that Himmel had?

A quick read because nothing really happens. I was excited going into this one after the set-up from issue 11, but it doesn't go anywhere. So much wasted opportunity. Only at the end is there anything interesting, and that's a battle. Unfortunately, this manga forgot how to be poignant as it was in the beginning.

Comme je le suspectais dans le tome précédent, Frieren est bien retournée auprès de ses anciens compagnons. Visiblement, on va vire une petite aventure à leurs côtés, le temps qu’elle trouve un moyen pour retourner à son époque. Une manière originale pour les remettre en avant, ainsi que d’autres personnages. Toutefois, des répercutions pourraient bien avoir lieu sur le présent…

Frieren comprend très vite qu’elle est belle et bien retournée dans le passé. Pourtant, la magie pour voyager dans le temps est supposée impossible. La stèle ayant la magie de la déesse, cela expliquerai cette possibilité. Il a tout de même une logique derrière, puisqu’elle a été transportée au moment où elle a touché la stèle pour la première fois. Je me demande juste si elle a retrouvé son âge de cette période ou si, justement, elle a le même âge que dans le présent. Dans la première option, cela pourrait être un avantage, notamment pour les humains dont la durée de vie est courte. En utilisant la stèle, ils pourraient augmenter un peu leur durée de vie pour s’améliorer en magie. Dans la seconde option, elle n’aurait pas de grande utilité. Frieren craint que ses actions puissent changer le futur, étant donné que la stèle porte une inscription qu’ils ont indiqués avoir réalisés, il y a des chances que ses craintes soient fondées. Etant donné qu’il y a l’inscription, je pense que son voyage a déjà été pris en compte et donc, que son voyage dans le passé ne modifiera pas son présent. C’est peut-être même pour ça que certains de ses compagnons ont insistés pour qu’elle prenne un apprenti ! Comme elle leur a clairement indiqué, leurs versions plus âgées devaient s’en douter. Surtout qu’ils ont vite découverts qu’elle cachait quelque chose, donc au final, ils sont bien au courant de la vérité. Ils vont l’aider, constater qu’elle est devenue puissante, mais que certaines choses ne changent pas. Quant à elle, c’est un peu le moment, le dernier, pour dire des choses qu’elle sur le cœur à ses compagnons.

Le présent n’est pas mis en parallèle du retour dans le temps de Frieren. Etant donné que le temps semblé figé lorsqu’elle a rejoint le passé, je me demande si le présent n’est tout simplement pas mis en pause. En tout cas, cette explication permet de comprendre pourquoi on n’a pas de parallèle. Frieren semble passer un bon moment, mais le temps presse et ils tombent sur un démon… Inévitablement, il va en attirer d’autres, des archidémons même. Le sort qu’ils réservent à Frieren n’est pas des plus joyeux puisqu’ils semblent deviner qu’elle vient du futur… Peut-être qu’ils savent comment la stèle fonctionne, mais qu’ils ne peuvent pas l’utiliser ? En tout cas, s’ils l’attrapent ils gagneraient en puissance en apprenant comment la magie à évoluer. Pour l’instant, le vainqueur n’est pas prédit, mais ses compagnons feront tout pour lui faire gagner le temps nécessaire afin qu’elle retourne à son époque. J’imagine qu’ils parviendront ensuite à vaincre les démons malgré tout ou bien, ils partiront en voyant qu’ils ont échoué. La voir passer du temps avec ses amis est un vrai plaisir, même s’il y avait des flashbacks jusqu’à présent, ils étaient généralement assez courts. Avec ce retournement de situation, on peut suivre une période plus longue à leurs côtés. J’ignore comment cela va finir, mais si ma supposition au-dessus est correcte, ses compagnons devraient garder pour eux cette rencontre d’une autre époque et reprendre le voyage avec la bonne Frieren. J’imagine qu’après ce voyage, Frieren évitera de toucher les stèles qu’elle trouve, qui sait ce qu’elle pourrait lui faire ?

Esta parte de la historia trae dinámicas clásicas entre el grupo y enseñanzas adquiridas de Frieren a lo largo de los años, haciendo un viaje del tiempo creíble, sin tener que sobreexplicar demasiado cuáles son las razones lógicas de esto. Volver a encontrar a dos personajes ya fallecidos con Frieren es muy lindo, en especial con Himmel, quién inmediatamente se da cuenta que algo raro sucede después que su amada elfa haya tocado el monumento de la Diosa. De ser así, ¿en qué consiste este volumen? Más que nada tratar de retomar ideas ya ocurridas entre Fern y Stark con Frieren (también podríamos añadir a Sein, por qué no), llevándolas ahora a la dinámica de Himmel con Heiter, Eisen y Frieren. Y es tan lindo, si bien lo leí con mucha calma, no me llegó a conmocionar como otras pequeñas historias, pero es muy satisfactorio verlos juntos, aunque no entiendan nada los héroes del pasado. Pero definitivamente, lo más lindo de todo, es ver el sueño de Himmel: casarse con su amada Frieren.

Les aventures de Frieren sont toujours une lecture très agréable et teintée d’un profond réconfort. J’ai particulièrement aimé ce volume.

On peut penser au premier abord que Frieren fait un saut jusqu’à leur destination finale puisque le but de son voyage est d’atteindre le « paradis » et revoir Himmel. Un objectif qu’elle se retrouve à avoir atteint plus tôt que prévu grâce ou à cause de la stèle de la Déesse.

Personnellement je trouve que c’est un fil narratif relativement bien choisi pour montrer le développement et l’avancée du personnage de Frieren que de la ramenée auprès de ceux qui sont la raison même de ce développement. Elle est plus observatrice de son entourage et le comprend mieux. Son attachement pour le voyage vient d’Himmel lui-même et la mettre de nouveau face à cette inspiration peigne chez le lecteur une très belle nostalgie.

Je suis très attaché à Himmel d’ailleurs. L’écriture d’un personnage qui continue d’affecter le présent de ceux qu’il a rencontré, même après son départ, me touche particulièrement et grâce à ce retour dans le temps, on a accès à des instants du héros qui n’aurait jamais pu être retranscrit à travers les souvenirs de Frieren. L’histoire de l’épopée pour tuer le roi des démons se réécrit mais en même temps, c’est comme si elle tombait toujours sous le sens dès l’instant où Frieren, Heiter et Eisen sont aux côtés d’Himmel.

Deux mots sur cette fin qui va nous plonger, au prochain tome dans le monde des rêves oubliés cette fois. L’amour qu’Himmel a porté à Frieren était je trouve très poétique mais je ne m’attendais pas à ce qu’il soit explicité plus frontalement au travers de cette illusion du marriage. Cette scène est aussi belle que amère quand on sait que c’est un rêve qu’Himmel a abandonné.

Comme il s’agit de l’édition collector, j’ai pu également lire la Fanfare de Frieren qui était une très jolie histoire courte ! Un monde où magie et musique s’entremêlent pour marquer les souvenirs et bien sûr même après sa mort, Frieren foule le pas à Himmel, si bien qu’elle continue toujours de croiser le chemin de ses statues, comme s’il avait prédit le voyage qu’elle allait parcourir par la suite.

Frieren was sent to the past era where Himmel is still alive and has not yet defeated the Demon King. To not alter the past, Frieren tries to stay hidden and not tell others about her. Himmel and Kiesel noticed that this more mature Frieren was more agreeable. And when they need to fight a demon that uses the free fall spell to kill humans, she has to use her power, not yet learned 80 years ago. Frieren has to tell the truth. 

Once the truth is out. The Hero party trying to help Frieren to find a spell that could send her back to the future. That means going from town to town to find old text that mentioned that time-altering spell. 

Frieren while enjoying her time with Himmel, knows she posted a threat to the Hero's journey. Also, she realised that she has mature and learned from Himmel how to coordinate with her friends while fighting demons.
