It's Komi’s final year of high school, and she only has 21 more friends to make before she hits a hundred! But when her friend Emoyama faces a crisis, Komi is ready to put all her friend-finding activities on hold in order to help out. Can she and Tadano work together to soothe Emoyama’s wounded spirit, or will Komi suddenly need to make 22 friends?
ODA Tomohito Name (in native language):小田智仁 Associated Names:オダトモヒト
Tomohito Oda won the grand prize for World Worst One in the 70th Shogakukan New Comic Artist Awards in 2012. Oda’s series Digicon, about a tough high school girl who finds herself in control of an alien with plans for world domination, ran from 2014 to 2015.
This series has turned into something like a collection of back-up stories from various Archie comics. Instead of the hijinks of Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica, we get tales of Reggie Mantle, Dilton Doiley, Pop Tate, and Ethel Muggs. Or in the case of Komi, we get the guy with a pacifier who acts like a baby, Komi's perverted stalker, and the emoi girl who gets very moved when she sees Komi and Tadano together. Hell, one chapter in this book is just Komi saying hello to the seventy-nine people who have signed her friendship book. Every single one of them.
Oda at least throws us a couple bones, bookending all the chapters of tertiary characters with one about Rumiko Manbagi's romantic prospects and another about Komi's obsession with getting all kissy-face with Tadano. It's not enough, but I guess we'll have to get used to it until graduation comes crashing into the series and forces something more dramatic.
In case you want to skip this review and get on with your day, there is a chapter where Yamai is sick and spends the whole time trying to get Komi to shove a suppository into her. Automatic three star maximum.
Compounding this, there’s entirely too much focus on Ogiya, the guy who wears a bib and pacifier and communicates in baby talk. He’s another character who I’ve never found funny, although Tadano being able to understand him while Komi cannot is an admittedly fun idea.
The tea ceremony thing is amusing, although it’s basically an excuse to contrast Ogiya’s formal appearance with baby talk. Again, it’s one joke. Naturally the story just ends by going into a really weird zone that has screwed up many a chapter before it.
I think that’s the thing. A little more restraint would make this series a lot better. Even that Yamai chapter has her ongoing friendship-not-friendship with Nakanaka mixed in and they’re a pairing that’s actually really funny. But then goes back to being weird and creepy.
It’s not my style, I guess, which is too bad because there are some really solid chapters here. Better than you’d expect from something this long in the tooth, even, which is entirely why I’m still reading.
The chapter where they just go through every single friend Komi has made to date is maybe a bit of a time-killer, but it does a fantastic job of killing that time in a satisfying manner. Yes, it’s a flex, but an earned flex.
There’s also a really good segment where Komi, Tadano, and Najimi go to bring Emoyama back to class, whose thing is that she loves emo drama.
This devolves first into shameless yuri content, but then spirals into our trio attempting to recreate their own spin on a drama show to get through to Emoyama, who is torn up over something very basic.
By the time this arc is finished it will involve scattered (and very localized) rain, a crazy plan involving cinderblocks, followed by an even crazier plan that involves a giant mallet and severe structural damage. It’s a very well realized parody even without a specific cultural context.
And it leads to a pretty cute date later on, which was a decent bonus. It’s a series of contrasts, honestly. For everything here that nails it there’s something so juvenile that it feels like an affront to juveniles.
3 stars - see, told you. And it’s too uneven anyway, but still mostly a good read, even though it’s a given that the milk is going to get soured every time you-know-who shows up.
- RAHHHH WAKAI PROPER CONFESSION - 'you're like a sunflower so i like you' what if i walked into oncoming traffic then what - please i just love manbagi and wakai they're just so adorable - the whole ogiya interlude is so random but like his backstory is literally that he was so hot that he decided to become a baby??? like fair enough - yamai has a cold (don't make me feel sorry for her please i beg of you) - komi class rep! - them making a whole ass kdrama scene for emoyama - everytime tadano crossdresses and angel gets its wings - wakai comin in hot with the spit kink - lmfao they broke down her door - "now you have to tell me all about you" komi is so cute - "shocked at what an immoral woman she has become, she wept." been there komi - cool komi - cool tadano
E o principal exemplo disso é a Yamai.
Thank you author for putting peoples names under characters. With so many friends it is hard to keep track especially if we do not see them for a while. Very helpful! We get to learn about Ogiya the character who is a baby.
Komi Can’t Communicate, Volume 32, is about a socially awkward girl (and many more young people socially challenged in communication) whose goal is 100, and this is her senior year, and so we have this book and a few others to get this goal--it ends at 37, I am told. So as usual we will meet people we have never really met before whom Komi wants to befriend, yawn.
The highlight is the opening sequence, where a guy admits he likes Rumiko Manbagi--cute encounter. But that is about it. And Komi is doing better with communicating, we can see a bot of growth.
Class rep election? Komi!! But then she has to take care of emoi Emoyama, who lost, ok. I can almost not forgive Oda (our artist creator) for just at one point saying hi to all of her 79 friends so far, a kind of in-process catalogue!? Too busy to work on content, Oda? Can we go any lower? Yes! There's a guy who talks with a pacifier in his mouth for way too long. And can we go lower? Oh, yes! Yamai is sick and tries to persuade Komi to give her a suppository?! Funny, if just one moment, but it goes on seriously too long. Enough said.
21 friends to go. You could get caught up in this series and forget about the original goal. This series has been so much fun, but I do see some serious parallels between it and Kaguya-sama: Love is War. They are different and yet from the same vein. This is another solid volume and I enjoyed it especially because of the conflict. With 22 friends to go...you know the end is very close, and that makes reading this a little said...but not series runs forever...unless you think your name is Oda and the series is One Piece (which I do love by the way ha ha ha). There is so much to like about this, and I think we all can reflect on the personalities and maybe improve our own a bit by seeing how much little changes can make.
At this stage, the series is just going through the motions of being a weekly serialized title. The end is tantalizingly close, with Komi in the 2nd term of her 3rd year in high school. Graduation looms, and Komi needs to work on her 100 friends.
The Manbagi romance arc and the Emoi arc are just diluting the Komi brand. Rumiko is not even a losing heroine, and she's just glorified supporting cast at this point. I get it that she needs her own happy ending, but it doesn't need to be front and center in this book because the title of this book is Komi.
The Emoi arc could have been done in less chapters. All that work for one line on the friends book. Komi's got 19 friends to go before reaching 100.
We got to see a little bit of Komi's past, which I appreciated. I love seeing little Komi! I also liked that some attention was shifted back to Manbagi and her arc, which was nice. We also got chapters about Komi getting to know a few minor characters better, which I also liked! (Emoyama is my favorite, I adore her.) On the negative side, there was a chapter about Yamai and while she can be funny sometimes, her in this chapter made me a weeeee bit uncomfortable, but that's the way it goes with this series sometimes.
Komi is close to her 100 friends goal! I enjoy seeing Komi and Tadano’s relationship, they’re so pure, Komi wants to kiss Tadano more and can’t contain herself. Rumiko’s love story is so cute, I want her to be happy and I think that Wakai is very good for her! I enjoyed Emoyama’s story, she’s embarrassed because she made Tadano and Komi kiss by pushing them, but it’s cute that Komi wants to become her friend and is actually interested in her!
4.25/5 Another great volume. There is a miniarc with Emoyama based on what happened in past chapters as well as some great character development for Ogiya. A few fun short chapters thrown in amidst some more time where Tadano and Komi continue to get closer to one another. I love how even side characters that are only shown briefly get their own time for development and relationship building with Komi.
I was giggling and smiling so hard at the end there, like she really wanted to kiss Tadano again and thought he was so cute, kissed him on the cheek, and then Tadano proceeds to kiss her, im melting 🫠 I also need Rumiko to say she likes Wakai back immediately. I absolutely love this side couple and his confession was so cute, now I just need them to be together 😫 I will say though, some of the chapters in this were really odd
These last few volumes have been complete misses for me. I had to go back and look to see when the last time I gave a book in this series more than 3 stars, and I think it wasn't far enough back that I will be dropping the series but it is on thin ice. I feel like we have to be close to the end (19 friends left) so hoppefully things pick back up at we get there.
I love that Komi is confident enough to nominate herself as class rep. I completely missed the point of everyone saying good morning. I kinda liked the emo drama storyline and their solution to get her back to school was actually pretty brilliant. And it was sad that komi (once upon a time) didn't have the courage to ask people to sign her yearbook.
The entire chapter reviewing all 80ish friends so far seems unnecessary without reminders of who a lot of these folks are. Rumiko’s starting to get over Taranto scenes are looking good, but the newest friend added is irritating. Backstory makes sense but current self-presentation (character speaks only in baby babble, and uses a pacifier)is just dumb.
I love Komi and all of the characters, I can’t believe it’s their final year! I love everyone except Yami she makes me so freaking mad. Komi and Tadano are so cute together and I love how everyone collectively ships them.
Cute and funny as always. This one dragged a little for me at first, probably because I do not care for the baby man, but there are some great moments and illustrations. Also that Yamai story was WILD.
i wanted to like this because komi can't communicate is one of my fave anime, but it's starting to get weird between the one who's obsessed with being touched by her and the guy being a baby
