It’s never a good idea for married couples to go to bed angry, and one Mechant Loup woman finds that out the hard way.
When Clint Wolf first hears the homicide call over the police radio, he has no clue that he’s about to walk into one of the most bizarre cases of his career. Upon arriving at the scene, he learns that a couple had argued while taking a dip in their hot tub, the wife had gone to bed angry, and the husband had been left to finish his soak and a couple of beers. When morning comes, the man is dead and fingers are already pointing at the wife.
While Clint has never worked a homicide in a hot tub before, that isn’t the problem—it’s the murder weapon that makes things weird. Not only does it raise more questions than answers, but it sends Clint down a confusing and dangerous path in his quest for the truth…and he’s taking the rest of the gang along for the ride.
Will justice prevail, or will this be the first murder case that Clint doesn’t solve? Read all the way to the explosive conclusion to find out.

Probably redundant at this point to give five star reviews, because I'm sure that's all he'll get for this the latest in the series.
You could read this as a standalone but you'll enjoy it more if you read the whole series. Either way, do yourself a favor, and start reading it. It's awesome
These are such great books. I have read all. All the characters in these books are awesome. Also London's books. I'm waiting on more books. Thank you !!!!!
This series was well into the twenties when the crimes got weirder and the stakes grew higher. Now, in the thirty-first installment—when many series are repetitive or derivative—this story shines with a plot unlike any I’ve ever seen.
Why was the man killed in his hot tub? And with what? Of course the first and most logical is the wife, who is unsatisfied, abusive, and reeling from her husband’s demand for a divorce. But is it so cut-and-dried?
It never is.
The weapon is one I’ve never seen before, is shocking, and leads the investigation in a whole new direction… all the way to an outlandish claim by a respected member of the community. Throw in an explosive climax, and it’s easy to say this series is still going strong.
The characters are as enjoyable and familiar as ever, and I was glad to see the mounting tension between two side characters continues to escalate. I can’t wait to see what happens with them, and the rest of the department, in the next book.
There are so many unexpected twists in this book that it is impossible to put down.
It starts off with a man found dead in his hot tub. Was it accident or murder? His termagant wife looks a good suspect for murder. Then Clint and his team find an extraordinary, inexplicable, object in the hot tub that knocks them completely off their stride.
This is an amazing addition to a long-running series that never flags, or runs out of ideas. The main characters are engaging and likeable, and their relationships grow and change over time. I have bought and read every one of these books and never been disappointed. I thoroughly recommend them and look forward to number 32, due out in December 2024.
Aspects are a bit far-fetched, but a good read - read on KU
This was a good addition to the series. We get to see a lot of Homer. There is a story thread with him that will obviously continue in future books.
The way the victim at the beginning died is farfetched, but stranger things have happened.
For once, there is a tie outside of the state and Clint *doesn't* go investigate there. That was an improvement.
My biggest complaint is I don't recall Amy speaking with such bad grammar. Mr. Bourg makes at least one type of grammatical error in all his books that is a pet peeve of mine. (Using subject prnouns for objects and/or vice versa.) The usual amount of errors for his books occur in this one.
I did enjoy the book and look forward to the next one.
Clint and the gang ALWAYS get the bad guys!! And this was a whole family of bad guys, and girls!! Talk about mean girls!! Wish every city in every state had officers and detectives like this crew!! They just dont give up!! Love Homer and looking forward to hearing more from him in the future. Can't wait to meet Amy's baby!! Want to hear more from Susan, too. She's been in the background in these last two books! Hope she and the family, including Achilles, are more central in the next story! Also what a jerk Josh was -- guys like him will always lose in the end. They are their own worst enemy!! Read this in one sitting, well except for a short break to make the coffee! Looking toward December, not for Santa but the next Clint Wolf story!!
I didn’t realize this book series was 33 books long when I started the first one. My greatest fear was that the following books would lose steam along the way and wow! Was I ever surprised! The story lines were super intense and full of twists, thrills and fears! One couldn’t help but be drawn into the lives of all the characters. Weird shenanigans going on in the swamps! I think I like the smaller town setting than the big city. And the characters were so well developed: Clint, Melvin, Susan, Amy and sadly, I didn’t care at all when one of the characters (not those I’ve mentioned) is killed. If you’re looking for that adrenaline rush, this series is for you! And I’m eagerly awaiting #33 which is coming out in a couple of weeks!
Your stories make me want to visit, maybe around January to avoid most of the heat and bugs
The Clint Wolf series is not just a collection of stand alone books, however it could be read that way…this being said, reading them in order will definitely help to make some of the insanity easier to understand. I love your characters and hope to visit with them all soon. My only complaint would be that each book seems to always be too short and the time to the next installment too long! BJ, you are in the league of the greats: Clive Cussler, Vince Flynn and so many others. Please keep writing this series, as your characters are my friends now! Cheers and keep them coming!
Outstanding. Another that I think is one of the best…I keep labeling each book as ‘one of the best’ so they are all fighting for top spot! Or most of them. This one was certainly an unusual plot line, not entirely credible at times, but all is understandable in the end. I especially like how the author is able to grab you right at the beginning and keep your attention all the way thru. That is, in my experience, very rare. Only discordant note for me, is Amy’s attempts at humor by ribbing her boss/colleague about his advanced age when he is a very young man. Childish and disrespectful.
This latest entry in one of my favorite series was among the very best! It never ceases to amaze me how Mr. Bourg draws me into each book within the first few pages and also how I get nothing else done until I finish the book. But this one had so many twists and serious encounters that I almost expected to lose another beloved member of the Mechant Loup team. Thank goodness I was wrong!
But Not for Justice is one the best Clint Wolf stories. Although seemingly outrageous, a Judge and his wife were captured by aliens. Unfortunately the Judge’s body parts were found all around town. His poor wife was committed to a hospital as being deranged. And Detective Wolf needs to figure out who, when, how and why this happened. I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommended.
Having read all of the Clint Wolf novels, I was anticipating another excellent mystery; however this one far surpassed the others in my opinion. What an excellent novel. Thoroughly enjoyed the way the author had Clint and his sidekicks solve this engrossing mystery. Gonna be hard to top this one Mr. Bourg. Can’t wait.
This was a very interesting story line. Without a spoiler you will be asking yourself what does your family mean to you. I like that Homer was back with his own story line. This was a truly who did it. A lot of head scratching. Great read and will have you answering that question about Family.
A man sitting in a hot tub in his back yard was killed and his wife was the suspect. Upon investigating the scene further a package was found at the bottom of the tub. Inside the package were exercise weights and a body part. So began a confusing, twisted tale of murder and mayhem.
Unique case that even though it's outrageous the author makes you believe it and keep reading to see what happens next. Great characters with detailed descriptions of the procedures needed to investigate crimes and protect the public they serve. Never boring!
His books are always top notch. He starts with a sentence grabber and then holds on til the end of the book. He always has a twist or two you never see coming. This is the best author and book series, I have read in a long time. Keep them coming Mr. Bourg, love the series.
This is one series I never tire of. I love this series. It always is full of excitement and thrills. I can never put these books down until the end. This is a great series . I highly recommend this book and series. Every book seems to get better
I really love Clint Wolf series. Oh my goodness what a ride.. I already ordered book 32. As always I love that this series has the same goid characters and can't wait for Amy to have net baby. Homer is a nice addition. BJ Bourbon is a great author.
This book was absolutely fascinating and kept my attention from page one to the end! BJ Bourg is definitely a talented author and I am so glad I discovered his books!
I was sitting on the edge with every turn of the page, what a riveting and sad case for Clint, Susan and the team. What a crazy family to come up against. Can’t wait for their next case. ❤️
Another fantastic book. This series just keeps getting better and better. Absolute thrill ride. Twist, turns and more thrills than a rollercoaster. It will have you captivated from the beginning clear through to the last word.
I have read every book in the series and I couldn't put them down. Thankfully I am retired and start and finish in one day. I can't stop until I know how it ends. These books are outstanding!
I never know where these stories will end! He always comes up with these improbable cases. Aliens, bodies dropping out of the sky to kill an innocent bystander. But somehow he always brings it back to the usual criminal motives!!
Different story in several aspects from any of bourg's others and those of others I have read. Seemed to go by quicker than I expected although the lack of philosophical meandering probably created that feeling. Bad ones were definitely bad.
I loved the way the author switches back and forth between happenings! It keeps you excited about reading more to get back to the original story. It didn’t take long to finish this book because I loved reading it.
Sometimes his stories are on the wild side like this one, but its still a good story. I still think he should include his dog more as I'm A dog lover, but that's about my only complaint. I rather expected a tribuchet instead of a slingshot.
