A thrilling read, the setting and the stakes were well painted by the author.

I do have a but that made my rating go lower—the wolf comparisons. The main character's inner dialogue occasionally came across as cheesy and odd, which caused me to lose the thrilling mindset that the plot had immersed me in. Also, the mystery aspect of the stalker's identity was very short-lived; I knew who it was and a general why, but I wanted to see how Zoe got out of this one alive.

I did like the stalkers characterisation though; their reasoning and headspace were great to read—perhaps I would have liked to see more of their thoughts and personality.

I loved the survival aspect, but ultimately, the characterisation made me not enjoy the book enough.

★★★★

One of my favorite survival and wilderness thrillers of 2024! Bonus: it is set in Yosemite’s backcountry, one of my all-time favorite places.

Thank you, BookSirens, Emerald Lion Press, and Valerie Brandy, for a copy!

Zoe and Mike, who have been dating for about a year, decide to leave LA behind for a horseback exploration of Yosemite’s remote wilderness. While Zoe is no stranger to the great outdoors—having attended camp every year as a child—she is much less confident when it comes to relationships. After a series of failed romances, joining Mike on this horse tour, despite her fear of horses, marks a significant step for her.

But when a stalker from the past appears to follow them through the wilderness, endangering their group, the weeklong getaway quickly turns into a game of survival. Mike suddenly vanishes, the stalker leaving behind an ominous note. With rations running low, the group dispersed in the vast remoteness of Yosemite, and a snowstorm looming, Zoe is thrust into a twisted scavenger hunt. She must survive the wilderness on her own and somehow rescue Mike…

What a fast-paced thriller! I finished this in one sitting—I could not put it down. The beginning grabs your attention, draws you in, and the suspense never lets up. Every time I tried to stop at the end of a chapter, the first words of the next one pulled me right back in.

I found Zoe’s character incredibly relatable. Her childhood mirrored my own, creating a fierce need to remain self-reliant, no matter the cost. The lessons and realizations Zoe encounters during the eerie scavenger hunt felt like food for the soul.

And the ending—so perfect! Just when you think you can finally relax, the creeping suspense returns. I cannot wait for the rest of the series!

Hear me out, it started out intriguing! There was suspense, that’s a given, but the “inner wolf” thing was really starting to become cringy and it was getting on my nerves the more it kept coming up. I lost interest about half way through when all we read about was her going through the wilderness. Also, it was predictable to me. I knew who the “predator” was as soon as stuff hit the fan.
Will I read the rest of this series? Probably not.

While I enjoyed this book, I wasn't overjoyed by it. There were some things I liked, and some things I really didn’t - so let's get into it.

Things I liked:
-I really liked the character development of the MC. I felt like I knew her and her struggles, and a little about why she deals with those struggles. I also wanted to see her win in the end.
-It’s a wilderness survival story. I think that says it all.
-Fast paced, and kept me moving through the book at a nice clip. I enjoyed the obstacles that came up and found myself moving forward wanting to know what happened next.
-Even though it felt like the amount of story left after the climax was a bit long, I did really like the way she ended the book.

Things I didn’t like or could have lived without:
-The animal/monster comparison was a little much. First an ogre, then a wolf, then a mouse… I don’t think I was quite as annoying as other people, but I don’t think it added any value to the storyline and was definitely overused. Okay, by the end of the book, there may have been a few eyerolls…
-It felt like every chapter ended with total “blackness” or “total darkness.” I get wanting to end each chapter on a little bit of a cliffhanger, but I felt like they all ended the same way.
-I figured out “who dunnit” very early on. Maybe not all of the how’s or why’s, but the who. It definitely didn’t stop me from finishing the book, to see if I was right, but in that respect, it didn’t disappoint.

Overall, I don’t know that this was a rave for me, but I definitely enjoyed it and would suggest it to someone who likes a specific kind of thriller.

**Thank you BookSirens and Valerie Brandy for sending this book for review. All opinions are my own.**

Trail of Obsession has a gripping fast paced storyline that will keep you intrigued. The author does a wonderful job building suspicion and doubt in her characters. It's starts off grabbing your attention immediately with a plot that is unique and keeps you guessing until the end. I was quickly turning pages trying to see what would happen to Zoe, if she'd ever find Mike, and whodunit. I love books that build suspense like this one.

Mike and Zoe decide to take a guided trip to Yosemite. This is a group activity that includes another adult couple, a single male, and the tour guide. They venture off into the woods on horseback to explore the wilderness. Strange things begin to happen while on their trip, but how? They are in a remote area and are the only ones with a permit to be there. Is it Mike's crazy stalker ex Cassandra or a stranger in the woods?

I loved how the ending gets the reader excited for the next book in the series.

I gave the book 4 stars because I felt like the author became a little over descriptive with Zoe's experience in the woods, which changed the pace of the book. It gave me the feeling of page filling instead of storytelling for a brief period. Otherwise, I truly enjoyed the read and would recommend this book to all book lovers.

My Review •

I don’t know how to feel about this. I have two separate ratings for this book. There is one specific thing that made this book very, very odd to me. Was this a good thriller? Yes. Would I recommend it? To a fury, yes.

Throughout the entire book there was a theme of the main character describing her hands as paws, howling into the sky, and finding the “wolf within her.” It just got…odd? Now, in the very last paragraph of the book I was like meh ok I get why that was a theme the entire book, but it felt more fury-ish and not “the animal within me is a wolf and not a monster-ish.” I just wish there wasn’t the theme of the FMC describing herself as a wolf, as if that was not in the book I would have rated this much higher.

Overall, I don’t regret reading it…but I did learn I do not have a wolf in me nor do I want one.

What was going to be a vacation in nature ended up becoming a near-death trap for the MCs in this book. With Yosemite Park in the background, we will discover through the pages of this book very beautiful places and dangerous too.
Zoe is a woman who, although she is love with her boyfriend Mike, still has doubts about him, especially regarding his ex-girlfriend Cassandra and their breakup. Cassandra is talking them and although Zoe doesn’t see Cassandra as a threat, she worries that she doesn’t quite know her boyfriend.
After a couple of days on their trip, Mike is kidnapped and someone leaves clues for Zoe to find him and this how she is immersed in this crazy adventure. For days she will face the elements as well as she will also discover things about herself, finally accepting how she is.
The identity of the villain in the story is clear from the beginning, but you will have to reach the end of the book to find out the why.

Let me start by saying that this book had a lot of great aspects. There are some deep introspective pieces where you can tell the main character, Zoe, has clearly been to therapy. Unlike a lot of typical main viewpoints that you see, she seems to be completely aware of her shortcomings. The storyline lets you follow Zoe as she completes test after test of mental and physical strength, so you get really up close and personal with her. However, the thing that threw me off a bit (and I’ve seen it mentioned in some other reviews) was the concept of her calling herself a wolf. I think I understand what she’s trying to do with it, but it just seems unnecessary and distracts from the plot as a whole.

I appreciate BookSirens providing me with this ARC and the opportunity to voluntarily post this review.

Suspense, plot twist, action and so much more. This book satisfied my craving of reading something that kept me on my toes.

I could not put this book down. Each chapter progressed with such an intense build-up that did not leave me disappointed but left my mouth open with shock. Between the insane plot twist and amazing storyline, I recommend you make this book your next read.

The author was intentional with every detail that she described which I appreciated. There were no loose-ends (except for that jaw dropping epilogue)

I liked how the author answered the readers questions of the present by referring to the past which gave backstory and developed the characters even further.

I can't wait to read the next books in this series!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I was really into this book from the beginning, always trying to solve the mystery from the start (can’t help it, I do it with everything lol). needless to say, I was wrong! I did notice quite a few grammar and spelling issues but it didn’t take away from my interest in the book. I like the themes of this book, being a therapist, and understood the deeper meaning and life lessons the author was trying to portray for the main character. I gave it 4 stars because it wasn’t exactly a jaw dropping ending, but that’s my own opinion since I am always looking to be blown away and I set the bar kind of high! Not because it wasn’t a great book!

I appreciated the concept behind this book, but the extensive focus on the characters' internal thoughts was not engaging to me. The depiction of the wild was beautifully described, immersing me in the setting. However, I felt that the main character's struggles with trust and her internal musings became overly prolonged. The numerous references to wolves became repetitive. I believe that delving deeper into each character's backstory would have enhanced the reading experience. Despite predicting the twist early on and noticing some mixed metaphors in the narrative, I found the story to be compelling and filled with suspense.

"A camping trip gone wrong. A murderer in the woods. Can Zoe survive?"
Trail of Obession is the first book in The Predator/Prey thriller series and I can not wait to read the second one. This one is about Zoe who decides to head to the remote backwoods of Yosemite with her boyfriend Mike to do a horse tour. What happens when a stalker to Mike's past decides to follow them through the wilderness? The author wrote this really well and it had me turning pages until the very end. This was a fast paced thriller read with plenty of suspense and action that I enjoyed a lot. I would recommend this one to any reader who loves thrillers. What starts out seeming like a psychological thriller turns into a game of cat and mouse in a remote part of the wilderness. Through the main character’s narration, I could hear the therapy that she’d been attending and the inner analysis she had gained from the sessions, although towards the end of the book I found it to be a bit much. This novel had a bit of a campy 80s horror movie feel to it with the big reveal as to who the kidnapper/killer is happening at the 85% mark and a plot twist right at the end setting itself up for the sequel. 3.5 stars rounded down to 3.

Received in exchange for an honest review from BookSirens.

After finishing this book, I have to say, I enjoyed it more than I expected to. It isn’t the type of book I generally enjoy, and the beginning was definitely not my favorite, but as the book went on, the more and more I enjoyed it. Valerie Brandy is an amazing author who never fails to entertain her reader and sucks readers from other preferred genres into her books with her unique style and characters who you get to know and love. Brandy really makes you feel the emotions her characters go through and makes you feel strong ones of your own all through out her novel. I definitely recommend this book to any mystery lovers. A tale about survival, not just of the body, but the mind. I connected with the main character and her struggles and absolutely loved the outcome. However, the ending has me wanting to read the second book. I love books like this that pull me in and make me feel connected.

Zoe and Mike go on a vacation into Yosemite. When a tragedy happens, Zoe is left to question not only herself, but also of Mike. Does he love her? Is he hiding something? And what is happening with Cassandra? As we travel with Zoe, we find the answers to those questions. We see Zoe finally trust again, whether with a human or an animal or both.

I love mysteries and figuring out the culprits. This book is the first one form this author that I read and an excellent read. Like others, I pulled some all-nighters. This is one of those reads that qualifies. It is fast paced and keeps you glued to your couch. Please keep a cup of tea or coffee nearby, you will need it. It is a book that just keeps the suspense going. The setting is in the outdoors. Who doesn’t love that? It will keep you guessing and wanting to read the next chapter.

I would also like to thank the author and BookSirens for an ARC copy to read this book. I volunteered to leave a review.

I can’t help but think Zoe could have saved herself a lot of misery by simply saying I’m afraid of horses. But nooooooo, she decides to keep quiet and she and her boyfriend Mike go on a backcountry adventure that is life changing.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat. The story itself is compelling but then the things Zoe has to go through as a result! The description of the landscape, the climbs and such are very vivid. It certainly had me thinking Zoe could die any moment.

I will say I didn’t care for the ending but I guess it’s setting up for the next book.

When Zoey started describing what she learned about herself through therapy, for a second I thought the book was about me! This story is about a woman who dug deep inside and became a stronger version of herself who fights for the love of her life. I loved the development of Zoey, all her self-reflection. This does have some spiritual elements, I’m not a fan of that, but the story was suspenseful and thrilling enough for those parts not to bother me. And Molly, she’s my favorite part of the story! The twists were unpredictable!

Trail of Obsession is the first book in a series written by Valerie Brandy, this was a new author for me. Thrillers are one of my favorite genres but for me this one didn't quite hit the mark. I found it to be a little off the wall, and out there for my personal liking. Having said that I would still recommend it to others because I know not everyone enjoys the same writing styles.

3.5/4 Stars

I found myself immediately sucked into this story. There was a few moments of laugh out loud comedy, which was lovely to break up the suspense within the story. I found myself surprised at the plot twist (not a spoiler, there's always a twist in the books), but the buildup was there in hindsight, I was just so thoroughly engrossed in the survival story that I missed them. I do believe that I would read the next book in the series, which definitely says something because thrillers aren't usually my jam.

In summary, you should definitely give this one a try!

This book didn't take long to get into the action. From the beginning you can tell Zoe has a story to tell and a past that keeps everyone at arms length. Watching the story develop through descriptions of nature as well as comparing and contrasting the wild of nature with the inner workings of our thoughts kept me wanting more. This book is suspenseful and offers a twist! Definitely put this on your TBR list. Downloading the 2nd book as we speak!!

Received as a review copy from Booksirens, this is an honest review. A truly nail biting dangerous thrill ride of love, determination and survival as a wild trip into Yosemite becomes a harrowing twisted game for Zoe and her boyfriend Mike. With Mike's abduction, Zoe is forced to follow clues to find the man she cares for before it's too late and willing to sacrifice whatever it takes.

Highly recommended.

I found this to be a very weird book, almost didn't finish it. It was not what I would generally read. There was some mystery but a lot of time was spent in the main character's mind. She was being manipulated by a stalker and went through some very stressful situations. If you enjoy reading something with a lot of mind bending going on, you might like this, I don't.

Good thriller that left you guessing through out. No spice what so ever and it didnt need it. The story is about surviving the wilderness and figure out who is the predator. The writing is good although there are a few too many analogies and metaphors. I will definitely read more by this author.

This is a book that not only entertains but also makes you think. I saw other reviews complain about metaphors and the wolf aspect but I thought that was a key part of the plot. This is a book that's not just fun although it is a great adventure, but it also makes you consider relationships with other people and yourself. I liked the metaphors, but I also prefer books that have substance.

I liked it! Had enough suspense to keep me going and curiosity about what was really happening.

I have questions though. How did an injured person get dragged up and down the cliff walls?

It was a quick, enjoyable read anyway and I would definitely check out another of this author’s books.
