Blairville—A city full of mysteries, scandals, and secrets. When Bayla Adams, a naïve young college student arrives first on the Canadian island that Blairville lays on, she can’t imagine how wrong her presumption of the “sleepy town” is; even less so about its inhabitants and the secret connections they have with her mother.
The city’s secrets didn't only suck Bayla deep in but also me when I first dived into the story. It is needless to say Maezos did well, advertising her book as a must-read to everyone who loves The Vampire Diaries. First thing you notice, when entering Blairville, is the perfectly set ambiance and atmosphere which won’t let you escape during the whole introduction of the adventure that feels like coming home to Mystic Falls (Yes, the introduction. But more to that later).
This is Maezos debut novel, an outstanding 749 pages full of intrigue, and a character list so long that I questioned for myself how she is able to keep track of all of them. Every character, let them be so small and merely a handful of times mentioned is well developed and described. What might come off as cliché, in the beginning, is rewritten as soon as the character’s POV turns up. The struggle that every one of them is going through is nuanced and different from one another, ultimately leading to a lot of drama and conflicts. This is, on the one hand, gripping and keeps you on your heels to learn more, however, on the other hand, leads to my biggest down point in this book and probably will continue throughout the series: the amount of POVs.
The Blairville Legacies lives from the drama that all of these different characters bring into the battle arena, yet, +4 POVs (I can remember 7 at the moment) was extremely confusing and had my head spinning throughout the first third of the book (which is a lot of pages). I stopped for several weeks and kept picking up and putting the book down time and time again. Of course, one might say that aids to the confusion for most people but that usually isn’t a problem for me. To come back to the problem of so many POVs: not only does it demand a lot of concentration to remember each and every character and their conflicts with each other or their agenda, but also does it drag the story pacing out for a lot of scenes. At times, it feels like the author sent their characters on a relay race, and the POV changes as the baton relay is handed over. As much as I understand the need to explain every character’s intentions, I would have wished for a lot of parts of the story to be told through fewer POVs. ‘Sometimes less is more’ as the proverb says.
Now, for the introduction part: The Blairville Legacies is intended as a multi-part book series, therefore book 1 is merely an introduction to the whole setup. If trying to read this as a standalone book, you won’t be very satisfied but left with a billion questions and a feeling of a missing peak as in a classic 3-arch structure. There are smaller peaks to a few characters’ arch, yet, not the big clashing drama the end of a TVD season would leave you with for comparison. You must be willing to invest more to learn about the secrets of the Blairville legacies (be it time, money, or abiding unabating devotion to one of the plenty advertised future-couples). If you do, I can recommend this book (and the series) to you, for you’ll get spicy, surprising, tensioned drama worthwhile buckets of popcorn, presented to you as well as a gripping season of Pretty Little Liars.
Vivid images will await (and haunt) you, leaving you at the edge of your seat when the next revelation is waiting for you to be witnessed, and new secrets are being hinted at every corner.
Despite the mentioned problems, I enjoyed this book, and therefore rate this book 3,5 stars (rounding up to 4 stars for all the bonus content and effort put into producing this series.) Book 2 is already waiting on my Kindle shelf to be picked up :)
