5★ “Patrick—the little boy who dreamed of pitching baseballs—became the world’s greatest quarterback. He proves that sometimes the most incredible victories come from the most unexpected dreams.”
Fans of American professional football know Patrick Mahomes as the star quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs. [Taylor Swift fans know the Kansas City Chiefs as the team of her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, but I digress. 😊]
He didn’t start out as a football fan, though. His dad was a professional baseball player, and Patrick went everywhere with him, learning about teamwork and fair play from the players. “Little Patrick was a bouncy boy from Texas who seemed destined to play baseball. His father was a professional player, and Patrick never missed a game. He dreamed of following in his dad’s footsteps.”
He was a talented athlete and played lots of different sports. I know that many professional athletes have had to choose between two or more sports to concentrate on. “Each sport gave him the chance to learn something new and become a better athlete.”
By the time he finished high school, he was sought after as both a baseball pitcher and a football quarterback. It was football that he really loved, and by his second year at Texas Tech, he wanted to turn professional. He left college for the Kansas City Chiefs. “Patrick had to wait until the end of his first season to play. But in just two games, he showed that he should be the starting quarterback.”
He became the league’s Most Valuable Player and a couple of years later, led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl win in fifty years! “They were the most formidable team, and Kansas City was bursting with pride!”
Patrick was sad when they lost the next year but knew there is always more to learn. By the time he later led them to their third Super Bowl win in five years, he was so famous he was a legend.
“His teammate in life is his wife, Brittany, an entrepreneur and former professional soccer player. Together, they are parents and business partners, having co-founded the women’s soccer team Kansas City Current. ” “Together, they help improve children’s lives through Patrick’s foundation: ‘15 and the Mahomies.’ “
As I write this, the Kansas City Chiefs are due to play in the 2025 Super Bowl on Feb 9, and I am sure there will be lots of fans cheering them on.
This would make a great little gift for a young fan or even an old one. As always in this collection, there are four black and white photos and a short written biography at the end.
Thanks to #NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for a copy of #PatrickMahomes for review.
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Quarto Publishing and the author for providing me with an advanced reader copy fo review purposes!
I have a little nephew, so naturally, I'm on a quest to find interesting books to gift him. I've been looking at the Little people, Big dreams series for a while now, so I'm happy I got the opportunity to review a few of them. This a short biography of Patrick Mahomes, quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs and NFL golden boy. It covers all the bases of his journey, and it offers interesting facts. If you have a kid in your family that enjoys football, or is a sports enthusiast, this would make a great gift. Little people, big dreams never disappoints!
I really like these Little People, Big Dreams books and this one is no exception. They make the stories of important/known people very accessible for kids and they are always beautifully illustrated. Patrick Mahomes definitely is a newer addition to the "great people", but I believe his story can influence and also inspire little kids to follow their dreams. Really enjoyed this!
*Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC*
I'm sorry but this may be my least favorite of these. I felt there was nothing to it. I'm sure he has more life details that could have made this more interesting.
Being a football fan, I knew of Patrick Mahomes success with the Kansas City Chiefs. Reading this book gave me an insight into him as a child and growing up. I didn't realize that his first dream was to be a professional baseball player. I liked that this book stressed the sportsmanship and team building skills that his father instilled in him as a young boy. he used this as he grew older and played with other athletes and teams. It is also important to most athletes to become well rounded and that was what he did. Playing and perfecting a variety of sports enabled him to decide which one he really enjoyed and wanted to pursue. I also think it is important to become well rounded as very few boys and girls make it to the elite status of a professional sportsperson. As always, there is a timeline at the back of the book and some actual pictures. I liked the illustrations in this book as they were whimsical, but also realistic. Another good addition to this series and one that I think many young children will enjoy as they know this subject.
Once upon a time, Patrick Mahomes dreamed of being a baseball star. His father was a professional pitcher, so that's probably natural. Well, he became a star, just not in baseball. Although he was an all-around talent in several sports, eventually football won Mahomes' heart. The Kansas City Chiefs and fans are glad he made that decision.
While I know Mahomes name and face from his football highlights, and there are many, I realized I knew nothing about him as a person. Well, I did recall a wife and child but that was about it. So, this book taught me a few things, too, even though aimed at children. As it turns out, Mahomes comes from a divorced family and was largely raised by his mother. His athletic skills carried him through high school and on to college where he eventually settled on football as his primary sport. Several Super Bowl appearances and championship titles later, the world knows his name.
While I rather wished this book had focused more on the person of Patrick Mahomes and not quite so much on his football status, it does give us a glimpse into what formed him. Even as a casual football fan it's seemed to me that he's relatively humble, taking neither his success for granted or himself, for that matter. Those aspects are definitely well earned and a reminder to the youngest wannabe sports star that responsibility comes with success, too.
The illustrations are simple yet effective with lots of Kansas City Chief colors, I might add. That said, they also show him with his family, both his parents and his own. Readers can take inspiration from him and come to see that talent isn't the only thing required to be a success. You have to be smart enough to take advantage of that talent without losing track of what's important. Mahomes seems to grasp that idea, making him someone to not just idolize but try to emulate, both as an athlete and person,. Thanks @QuartoPublishingGroup - #FrancesLincolnChildren'sBooks for this early peek into the life and times of a talented, well-rounded, and well-grounded young man. I'm sure we will hear more about him in the future.
I just love reading these little book by Little People, BIG DREAMS, These book are a bestselling biography series for kids that explores the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists and activists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream. So when Patrick Mahomes by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara came available I had to read this book with my nephew who also loves reading these colourful books.

A wonderful read and great books for children to learn about famous people who may not be with us now, they should never be forgotten and for famous people who are still alive to learn about why they became famous etc.
With thanks to the author, publishers Quarto Publishing Group, and NetGalley for providing me with a DRC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I’m not an NFL guy at all and knew nothing about Patrick Mahomes before reading this book, but felt that I got a pretty good overview of his life story in these few short pages.
Patrick was a good all-round sportman in his younger years, inspired by his pro-baseball player dad. Despite his parents marriage breaking up when he was still quite young, the support of his loving family helped him pursue all of his sporting passions before eventually choosing to focus on football. Through his hard work and dedication to the sport, he was able to get better and better before being drafted as the Kansas City Chief’s quarterback where he helped to transform the team, and eventually winning three super bowls.
It was not all positives for Patrick though; he and the Chief’s also experienced a major loss in the NFL Championship against the Buccaneers, but he and his teammates were able to learn from that loss and turn it into an inspiration for future performances and achievements.
His off the field achievements are equally inspiring, with him and his wife setting up the “15 and the Mahomies” charitable foundation for the betterment of children’s lives.
This book gives a positive message to young readers, that despite the inevitable challenges and setbacks that you will face, through hard work and believing in yourself it is possible to achieve your dreams.
Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara has written four children’s biographies that will be released in early 2025: Katherine Johnson, David Beckham, Patrick Mahones, and Yayoi Kusama. These books are part of the bestselling Little People, BIG DREAMS biography series for kids. Each book is 32 pages and beautifully illustrated. They are perfect for reading to small children during “quiet time”.

I received an Advance Review Copy (ARC) from NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Big, big thank you to Maria Isabel Sanchez Vergara, the author, Guilherme Karsten, the illustrator, Frances Lincoln Children's Books, and NetGalley for the privilege of being able to read this installment of the Little People, Big Dreams series focused on Super Bowl Champion, Patrick Mahomes. I will share my review to Amazon, Barnes & Noble as well. I really love this series, and the illustrations are always so great. The illustrations in this one are no exception. The pictures are very dynamic and engaging, much like the character of Mahomes. Many kids look up to him as a role model because of his prowess on the field and his personality off the field, and I have a feeling this little book will be a hit with kids who like football and Chiefs fans. The story of Mahomes' life as a young baseball player who fell in love with playing football is a great example to show children that following your strengths and passions can take you to the moon. At the end, there is a more detailed biographical story with some real-life pictures to help add more context. I think parents and children will be able to have good discussions when reading through the book. There are good lessons to be learned in his story, and I appreciate the author and the Little People, Big Dreams series for sharing them in an age-appropriate and adorable way! Thanks again.
Patrick loved many sports and learned that teamwork and sportsmanship were the most important. After college he went professional with the Kansas City football team and was very successful. But he is proudest of his family and of the Foundation for children that he is responsible for. The illustrations by Guillherme Karsten are simple, colorful, and expressive. Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school or your local public library! I requested and received a temporary uncorrected proof on Adobe Digital Editions from Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincoln Children's Books via NetGalley. Thank you! My review will be live on my blog - donnasbookblog on 23 January 2025 - publication day!
I love the books in this series and always find something new in them.
This was a book that focused on a fairly new sporting legend - Patrick Mahomes - Patrick is famous as the American Football Quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs and his part in making them Superbowl Champions 3 times in the space of 5 years! I live in the UK but I am aware of who he is, but that may not be the case for all so this book could be a great introduction to him.
This book shows how much you can potentially achieve if you follow your dreams - he has broken a lot of records so far and I am sure that there will be more to come as he is only 29 years of age! The book also touches on some of the charity work that he has done and set up with his wonderfully supportive wife Brittany, who was his high school sweetheart. He is also part owner of Kansas City Current ladies football (soccer) team.
Lovely images and another great addition to the series - 4 stars from me for this one
My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: I love this series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. She does a great job distilling people's lives into messages easily digestible by young readers while making them interesting for older readers, too. I also love the breadth of who she covers in her series.
This one on Patrick Mahomes does a great job of outlining how he became such a great, well-known quarterback. It is pretty surface-level for those who really love sports. It doesn't dive too deeply into his stats or specific accomplishments, but it is a great primer for those who may not know about him or know much about him. It mostly focuses on his athletic accomplishments. For fans of the series, they will enjoy this one. For people less familiar, the books do a great job informing readers about a variety of people.
Patrick Mahomes is a name that football fans everywhere recognize, and this *Little People, Big Dreams* book offers a wonderful introduction to his journey. Like others in the series, this book provides a brief but engaging look at Mahomes’ early years—starting with his baseball roots, inspired by his MLB player father—before highlighting his rise to NFL stardom. It carries an inspiring message that dreams can change over time, and what truly matters is the determination to follow them.
Even in his relatively short career, Mahomes has already broken records and made a lasting impact on the sport. At just 29 years old, he continues to impress, and many are eager to see what he will achieve next. Perfect for young readers, this book is a great pick for football fans and an excellent addition to any collection celebrating perseverance and success.
If you didn't know, I know SO MUCH about sports. Yay Sports. I'm worthless. I thought this guy sounded familiar, but as we sat down to read it, I asked if the girls knew what team he played on. I got "Chiefs, like Taylor's Boyfriend". It's interesting that he started as baseball and switched to football. I could see making a name for himself outside of his pro baseball dad being an influence on that decision. But, he also sounds like a polyglot of an athlete too. And it sounds like that cross functional experience has contributed to his success. As always with these books, I learn the most in the two page summary at the back then in the bits that are illustrated, and I am interested to learn more about his wife Brittany and what they have accomplished together. THAT sounds like an interesting story.
Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara does it again with “Patrick Mahomes”! This book tells Mahomes' inspiring journey—from his childhood love of sports to becoming an NFL star, his charity work, and strong family bond. It's a heartwarming read that shows kids how passion, hard work, and big dreams lead to success. The “Little People, BIG DREAMS” series excels at making iconic lives relatable. Full of energy and positivity, “Patrick Mahomes” is perfect for any young reader seeking motivation and a reminder that anything is possible with determination. A must-have for every bookshelf!
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the authors for providing me with an advance copy to read!
My four-year-old and ten-year-old both love the Little People, Big Dreams series. This latest book focuses on the life of athlete Patrick Mahomes. We were less taken with this book than with previous ones in the series, but this may also be because we're UK-based and do not follow American football! This book has the same beautiful illustrations that we've come to expect from the series.
A recommended read for fans of American football and fun educational reads for children.
Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Books for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
Another wonderful entry into the Little People, Big Dreams series. This is is about Patrick Mahomes, who is a hometown local for me. I always knew he was a local football star who made it big in the NFL, but I didn't know much about his background.
This follows Mahomes's life growing up in Texas, playing sports, and becoming the star he is today, including his foundation 15 and the Mahomies Foundation. The illustrations are really colorful and engaging.
This is a perfect book for anyone who loves the Chiefs, football, or learning about sports stars.
Thank you Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the eGalley.
This is such a This is the first book I’ve read from the “Little People Dream Big” series, and it was perfect! It’s such a fun, yet informative book that would please any age.
This particular book highlights Patrick Mahomes trajectory to greatness in a way that is clear, concise, and informative. Its illustrations are extremely appealing and the writing is extremely approachable for kids. I love that this book is the perfect introduction for kids to learn more about famous figures relevant to today’s culture.

I know y'all are probably annoyed by hearing the same thing about this series but I just can't say anything bad about the Little People, BIG Dreams series!!! I really hope that this series is able to continue for a long, long time and cover many, many peoples' stories. Everything about this book was perfect: the illustrations, the organization, the writing, the information, EVERYTHING! This book is going to inspire so many kids. Bravo, bravo, bravo!!!
I really appreciated this entry into the Little People, Big Dreams series! It covers Patrick Mahomes, an NFL player from Texas. I was not at all familiar with Patrick's story. This was a great little biography that focused on his sports success & charitable causes. I think it would be a great read for kiddos who are interested in sports!
Thanks to NetGalley, Quarto Publishing, and Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara for the chance to read and review. My opinions are my own!
This was the first book in the little people big dream series I have read. Being from STL my family are massive KC Chiefs fans, so getting to learn about their star quarterback in a cute, fun and informative biography filled with colorful illustrations was a lot of fun. I cannot wait to tell my family facts about Patrick Mahomes that I learned. Thank you @netgalley and @quartopublishing group for the wonderful arc. I really enjoyed it and cannot wait to read more in the series.
As usual, the Little People, Big Dreams series delivers a dynamic, brightly colored, and beautifully illustrated book—even though I’m not the target audience! I learned some surprising facts, like how Patrick Mahomes’ dad was a professional baseball player and his wife a professional soccer player. Just imagine what their kids might achieve! The Little People, Big Dreams series never fails to let kids know that the time starts NOW if they want to achieve their biggest dreams.
A decent book that looks at a quarterback who was a fine all-rounder in many sports as a youth but stuck with the dream, and won three Super Bowls in five years. It's fine and all, but the percentage of people outside the US who have never heard of the bloke means this will always be a minor entry to this series of inspirational life stories.
Thank you, NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the eARC of this picture book. I love this Little People, BIG DREAMS series so much. It's educational and gives a lot of information with amazing illustrations. Children will find it fun and easy to read. They will also learn how to achieve their dreams from Patrick Mahomes' experiences.
This a short kids biography of Patrick Mahomes. I enjoyed the biography and learned interesting things about this three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback and MVP. The illustrations were nice and the writing was simple enough for an elementary student to understand. I would recommend this book to any Patrick Mahomes fan with kids.
I didn't know anything about Patrick Mahomes when I chose to read this book, but I love the series so was keen to find out more. This instalment in the Little People Big Dreams series provides a good distance children to understand that dreams change, and to show both wins and losses. Beautifully illustrated and perfectly pitched as is the norm for books in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This was a really nice read from one of my favourite series. I liked the journey and the lack of judgement it presents. I wanted the story to go deeper at times and I can't say the illustrations captivated me, but overall it was a really nice read.
This book was so fun! I have a group of super football fanatic second graders, and they will be so excited for this! I have multiple books in this series in my classroom biography section, and they're popular with my students!
I love this picture book series. I love reading short biographies about people through out history and current times. I think it was great learning about Patrick Mahomes. I think he sounds like a great football player and person all round.
