Realizing that Aristide deals with overflowing magic like her late mother, Melphiera is determined to figure out a way to prevent him from going blood mad. Moreover, Galbraith has been overflowing with monsters since the Calamity, which means Aristide and his knights are integral for the peace of the kingdom. Melphiera realizes more and more that their engagement is absolutely necessary…but maybe learning how to eat even blood-mad monsters wouldn't be too bad!
Oh my info dumping. More action, more cuteness, and some dashing women introduced!
Recap: backstory about the Duke, they travel to his home and get attacked by monster birds. Melphie decides to try using the excess magic she's bottled to basically make a bomb for the Duke to throw at birds. It's a resounding success. They're at the city, Duke gives Melphie a group of female knights as her bodyguards. They try and swear fealty to her but she declines at this time until she's worthy of them.
Melphie has an odd insecurity that pops up at random times. I find it frustrating that the duke is pretty open about his interest and flirting with her, and yet she doesn’t seem to understand. I have some doubts about his battle strategies, and am not impressed that the author had her writing on a jar while flying at super accelerated speeds. I also found it confusing when they talked about the events of 17 years ago, and Galbraith’s big sacrifice. I know it’s supposed to be touching, but instead I thought it was illogical. They said previously that Galbraith has been taking in wards for years because they are the shield of the country, but then here they said it was an agreement made 17 years ago, and that’s why the duke became the ward.
It’s hard to see why anyone would want to become a knight of Galbraith if they’re basically cannon fodder. It sounds pretty thankless, tbh. It would make far more sense if knights from all houses were required to do a certain number of years there to help with monster slaying and train to be better knights. Then you find that supposedly there was an uprising of a faction that wanted to put the second prince (the duke) on the throne. Uh…was this before or after he was appointed heir of Galbraith? Wasn’t he a little kid when the old duke died? If he didn’t want to be king, what was the point of the nobles trying to make him one?
At the end Melphie is going on again about becoming worthy, blah blah, blah, and the female knights acquiesce to her request first then to wait to give their pledge (after randomly rambling about their swords…). They respond yes, “we’ll devote ourselves to becoming worthy of you” and she says thank you and if that isn’t the opposite of what she said…

This was an action heavy installment but there were a few super cute romantic moments (the forehead kiss!!!). Not my favorite volume, although it does have one of my favorite art panels - the two page art of Melphie and Aristide on the dragon, but it was still so much fun and very enjoyable. I’m excited to see more of the Blanche Corps’ interactions with Melphie. I absolutely hate the cover for this volume, just need to throw that out there. It’s making me think the blonde has a foot fetish.

This manga continues to be a solid read that only has a few flaws. The flaw that I guess will be with me the length of the series is the limited backgrounds...if a few more were inserted it would be less obvious they are missing. The cover pages show the extra care beyond the interior pages as well. But the story and characters are both charming and well designed. The interactions even when someone seems a bit too perfect and yet simple seem to work! Another solid volume!
Absolutely charming thus far! I'm loving the passionately clueless energy of our leads, the sass of the rest of the cast, and how we're getting a good ground work for some plot mischief without overshadowing the fluffy romance. Very looking forward to the next books!
They are about to be attacked by birds and Melphie is trying to work if they are going to taste good! Too funny. And I love that she has the sense to make that bomb, again the two of them working together is amazing. Undecided about the female knights...
