His Rescued Mate is the 1st book in the Alaskan Tails series by Delta James. This is an Alaskan Tails novella, a spin-off from the Mystic River Shifter series, however, you don't need to read Mystic River series to enjoy the story. It is a paranormal romance.
Max Renner has lived in isolation on Kodiak Island, hiding both his identity and the secrets of his past - until a twist of fate brings Alexa Carrington to his door. The fearless journalist is chasing a story, but she never expected her quiet getaway to land her in the home of the reclusive artist she’s been trying to interview for years. Determined to uncover the truth, Alexa is drawn into Max’s guarded world - and into something deeper than she ever anticipated. As their connection intensifies, passion ignites and buried secrets begin to surface, Max’s primal instincts surge to the forefront. In a moment of overwhelming emotion, he marks her - an act that binds them in ways Alexa never agreed to. Alexa and Max must now confront the truth about his past - and what it means for their future. On an island where nothing is as it seems, can two guarded hearts take a chance on love?
This story is a compelling blend of romance, shifter mythology, and family secrets, set against the stunning backdrop of rugged Kodiak Island. It's an engaging tale filled with simmering chemistry, unexpected twists, and just enough mystery to keep you turning the pages. The writing style of the author is smooth and cinematic – so the setting really comes to life. Both leads are likeable and form an immediate connection, but their relationship unfolds slowly and thoughtfully as they explore the island - and Max’s past - together. I appreciated that, despite the "fated mates" trope, they don’t leap into bed right away. The tension builds naturally, and when the steam hits, it is steamy, but never at the expense of plot or character development. One of the novel’s strongest aspects is its atmosphere. The setting feels alive, and the treasure-hunt-style mystery tied to Max’s family adds an adventurous layer. Alexa’s discovery of Max’s hidden identity - both as an artist and as a wolf shifter - unfolds at a measured pace that enhances the intrigue. The dual first-person POVs allow us to see both characters’ inner struggles and emotional growth. That said, despite liking Max and Alexa individually, I struggled to fully connect with them as a couple. Their chemistry should have sizzled, but it didn’t always land for me. Some key emotional beats felt a bit muted, especially considering the intensity of their bond as fated mates. I also found Alexa’s instincts as a journalist surprisingly passive. For someone who supposedly thrives on chasing the truth, she often defers to Max rather than pressing for answers. While her respect for his boundaries was refreshing, it didn’t quite align with her professional drive, which softened the potential for conflict. The moment when Max marks Alexa without her consent is a major turning point - but her reaction felt underwhelming. Given the life-altering nature of what happened, I expected more internal conflict or fallout. That could’ve added emotional weight and realism to the story. Still, there’s something undeniably charming about this book. It doesn’t dive into high-stakes shifter politics or life-or-death danger. Instead, it focuses on two people learning to trust and connect, surrounded by natural beauty, art, and a touch of magic. Even though I haven’t read the Mystic River series, that didn’t hinder my enjoyment - His Rescued Mate stands perfectly well on its own.
Overall, this is a sweet, steamy, and low-angst love story with shifter elements and a light mystery. All in all I enjoyed the read and would definitely pick up the next book in this series.
