Things started strong as the storyline continued Yumeko Jabami's origin story from the previous volume, but then the new villain started doing stuff that was supposed to be sinister but felt so silly and campy it felt like she should have a mustache to twirl or a soap opera set whose scenery she could chew.

And then, having finally escaped the interminable election story arc just a couple of books back, we basically get shoved right back into it as a new competition is launched to determine if there even should be a student council president.

I am so sick of student councils at this point that I'm throwing up a little in the back of my mouth every time I hear the phrase.

I know I should stop this series now, but I'll probably suffer through a couple more volumes.

POPKULTUROWY KOCIOŁEK: Ten tom działa trochę jak pomost między dwoma dużymi etapami serii. Z jednej strony dostajemy zakończenie intensywnego wątku rodzinnego Yumeko, który od dawna wisiał nad całą historią jak cień. To nie jest jednak klasyczne domknięcie z pełnym wyjaśnieniem. Raczej emocjonalne dopowiedzenie, które pozwala lepiej zrozumieć źródło jej obsesji, ale jednocześnie nie odbiera jej tajemniczości.

Najmocniej wybrzmiewa tu motyw relacji rodzinnych opartych na kontroli, ambicji i ryzyku. W Kakegurui tom 18 widać wyraźnie, że hazard nie jest tylko zabawą czy narzędziem władzy, ale językiem, którym komunikują się bohaterowie.

Druga część tomu zmienia ton. Po długiej i momentami przeciągniętej batalii wyborczej historia w końcu rusza do przodu. Nie ma tu jeszcze pełnej eksplozji nowej fabuły, ale jest wyraźne przesunięcie ciężaru opowieści. Akademia Hyakkaou znów zaczyna żyć innym rytmem, a nowe układy sił sugerują, że nadchodzące rozgrywki będą mniej przewidywalne niż wcześniej.

To, co działa dobrze, to kontrast. Przeszłość jest gęsta emocjonalnie, chwilami wręcz duszna, a teraźniejszość daje oddech, ale jednocześnie nie pozwala się rozluźnić. Ten balans sprawia, że tom 18 nie jest tylko przystankiem, ale realnym przejściem do kolejnego etapu historii.

Najważniejsza pozostaje Yumeko, choć paradoksalnie nie dostajemy jej „pełniejszej” wersji. Ten tom nie rozwiązuje zagadki jej osobowości, tylko ją pogłębia. Widać, że jej relacja z ryzykiem nie jest efektem jednego wydarzenia, ale całego systemu doświadczeń, w którym emocje, presja i gra o władzę były obecne od bardzo wczesnych lat.

Postacie rodzinne pełnią tu rolę katalizatorów. Nie są jednowymiarowe, choć momentami balansują na granicy ekstremów moralnych. Każda decyzja, nawet jeśli wydaje się racjonalna z ich perspektywy, niesie ze sobą destrukcyjne skutki. I właśnie to nadaje temu wątkowi ciężar.

Tempo w Kakegurui tom 18 jest nierówne, ale świadomie. Wątek przeszłości rozwija się w sposób bardziej narracyjny niż dynamiczny. To nie są szybkie pojedynki, tylko stopniowe odkrywanie relacji i motywacji....

yumeko wins the gamble against her aunt in souko's stead but ultimately loses to kabura tsuibami, who takes posession of yumeko as a result and refuses to let souko ever see her again in order to nurture yumeko's gambling abilities; kirari momobami is approached by the guardians society - the alumni society - who funded her campaign and is asked to leave but instead orchestrates a gamble wherein seven new members of the student council are elected

The ending of Yumeko's backstory is insanely interesting but it manages to keep Kakegurui at its best: always leaving something to be revealed later.

I am going to trust the series, because knowing where this goes right after the ending of the Student Council President Election, I know shit is just getting better.

immersive panels and an exciting flashback that expose the needlessness and insubstantiality of the previous volume. unfortunately, the characters’ motives stay underexplored and in the shadow yet again. the second part dips in quality with a perplexing ending that sets back the whole series and doesn’t make sense for any of the characters where i, as a reader, feel cheated.
