Multi-genre author Eric Rump has released an interesting, fun, and educational read with the book Adventures Beyond: Wild Animals, one that children should be entertained by and parents should feel good about getting.
I respect Rump’s goal of humanizing animals to put them in a more sympathetic light. After all, as he writes in the intro, animals experience feelings and trials just as we do.
The short stories include a wide range of alliteratively named animals such as an elephant named Ellie, a hippo named Harry, and a walrus named Wanda. The goal here by Rump was to relate joyous, life-affirming moments that kids can learn from and become inspired by.
Particularly touching for me was the story “Ollie the Outgoing Octopus,” in which Ollie meets and slowly befriends a shy starfish named Stella. As a naturally friendly octopus, Ollie at first comes on a bit too strong for quiet Stella, so he changes tactics by making the water and light around the Starfish feel appealing and mesmerizing. Young readers learn in the course of this story (and myself, too) that starfish don’t have brains but are highly sensitive to their surroundings.
That’s just one example of the numerous educational, touching, and empathetic stories within this special book. Young readers and their parents will no doubt find it to be a worthwhile read.
