Rei Tōma (Japanese: 藤間 麗,Tōma Rei) has been drawing since childhood, but she only began drawing manga because of her graduation project in design school. When she drew a short-story manga, "Help me dentist" (ヘルプ me デンティスト), it attracted a publisher's attention and she made her debut right away. Her magnificent art style became popular, and after she debuted as a manga artist, she became known as an illustrator for novels and video game character designs.

Dawn of the Arcana is her first long-running manga series, and it has been a hit in Japan, selling over a million copies.

Oh, well, despite my misgivings of a lot of the latter volumes of this series, I was happy with this volume getting back to its warfare and intrigues. Not the best we’ve seen, those days have passed us by, but a perfectly good time.

If you like this sort of thing, of course. Oh, Rangetsu and Tenyou get all cozy and the usual, but the shadow of war looms over it all. And the shadow over the shadow is the revelation of a prophecy that Prince Kougai won’t survive the coming battle.

This dives into the usual questions of free will and fate and it turns out that there is already a built-in way out of this little issue, but it requires somebody else to die in Kougai’s stead.

Oh, he has a loyal beast servant? Very handy, but you’re suddenly asking somebody who devoted their life and is considered less than human to die for one. Not great, no matter how close the two of them are.

It isn’t anything new, but I love these sorts of thinky dilemmas and combined with the move and counter-move of the large scale conflict it makes for a pretty fast and engaging read.

The means by which this assassination was originally planned also invokes the shadow (you get a shadow and you get a shadow…) of base treachery at the palace. And, while not the ongoing mystery that we lead off with, it makes for a sufficiently interesting morsel to dangle in front of the reader.

Not a bad change for a manga that I had kind of lost a little faith in. The ties to the mangaka’s older series are there, but the focus in this volume is on the current cast and the integration feels more elegant and less like you need a primer to get anything out of it.

4 stars - I’ll take this current version as a decent consolation prize now that the primary storyline wrapped itself up. A welcome bit of course correction.

Prince Tenyou is given info of a prediction that his brother, Prince Kougai, will fall in battle. If Kougai's beast, Boku, saves him, then he would die in his stead. Rangetsu is sent to look after the both of them. During the battle against the reinforcements, Boku uses up his powers in order to help defeat them faster, and is in danger of dying. As Rangetsu holds him on the battlefield, he tells her that the letter contained more names of those who would perish.

This was a good one to read because you get to see Rangetsu and Tenyou get closer before she leaves. They are so sweet together. As much as Kougai has pissed me off with his ways of treating Rangetsu, I do hope he doesn't get killed...

I forget just how much this series yanks your emotions around. Here I was, thinking that things were coming to an end, but so many other things are happening, and I'm so nervous. I really love the characters and how complex they all are, because just when I think I've gotten them figured out something else happens.

Shout out to VIZ Media for this ARC. I will be not so patiently waiting for book 16

This is fine. I do wonder where it’s going since the 1st arc is over. This arc is about war and seems to nod to her original series Dawn of Arcana. I’ll stick with it for now.

I still really enjoy this series and the artwork. There is not much progress in this volume for Rangetsu and Prince Tenyou, but we get a glimpse at Boku's past briefly. Rangetsu, Boku, and Prince Kougai head to the battlefield; what will await for them there?

Is it possible to change fate, enough where a life for a life is not required?

Han decidit introduir més acció amb una guerra a punt d'esclatar, però per a mi que només emboliquen la troca :/ no em convenç, però l'autora ha anunciat que s'acaba al volum 17 o 18, així que espero un bon final imminent...

So. Kougai is saved, it was a dream. Boku is sick from overusing his ability.....and Rangetsu is finding out that Kougai's death wasn't the only one predicted.......was Tenyou's? Did he keep it from her?

I enjoyed it a lot, but didn’t feel like the story really advanced that much.

I’ve been feeling this for the past several volumes, but it feels like not very much happened. And this time there wasn’t even very much fun fanservice to make up for it, aha. 😅

I really like how this world keeps expanding, but our main characters are still at the forefront.

Rangetsou is getting better at interacting with Tenyou and reading him even when he refuses to say anything. Hopefully, Tenyou is correct in her determination this time around and she can bring both Boku and Tenyou's brother home safely from the war. At least Tenyou seems to be doing well when he spars with this brothers and he does still have Sogetsu at his side. The two siblings still seem to baffle those around them, but Sogetsu seems much more laid back overall, especially compared to Rangetsou's training and discipline. She's learning to relax where she can though and seems to be starting to identify the things she herself wants in the future, even if it means fighting for it along the way.
