The Package Deal #3

Unnecessary Roughness

Rate this book
Jackson Kincaid

When my best friend, Allison, died in a car accident, I suddenly became the parent of my ten-year-old godson. How was I supposed to play football for the Portland Pirates and be a full-time single dad?

Adjusting is the name of the game. But thanks to my friends, and Simon, the team doctor, we'll heal and make it through.

Did I mention he's my best friend, and I can't stop my having dirty thoughts about getting him naked? Keeping my feelings a secret isn't easy or the only obstacle I'll face.

Simon Taylor

As my new friends like to say, I'm the hardass team doctor that lets nothing get by me. But somehow, Jackson did.

While helping him adjust to his new reality, I wasn't prepared for my new feelings for him to surface. Especially when I didn't know I had them. Jackson and his godson have stolen my heart and aren't letting go.

It doesn't matter that our relationship might be considered forbidden or that he's fifteen years younger than me. I want things with him that I've never wanted with anyone else. Especially a man.

Jackson and I deserve to be together no matter how rough things get. Some things are just worth it.

Unnecessary Roughness is a smokin' hot friends to lovers and age gap story and the third book in the Package Deal Series.

Unnecessary Roughness is the newest entry in the Package Deal series. This entry focuses on Jackson and Simon who are friends and colleagues for the Pirates football team and are thrown into an impossible situation where Jackson finds himself the guardian of his 10 year old godson. Due to Jackson needing support and guidance with his newfound role as a father, Simon is not only helpful but becomes a source of solace and comfort to Jackson while he navigates this difficult transition.

Unnecessary Roughness is a story that highlights grief, family and a bond that quickly transforms from friendship into something genuinely sweet and wholesome. Jackson and Simon have great chemistry with one another that is hard to ignore once their friendship starts to develop into something more. They are very devoted, protective, and caring to one another, which makes for such a sweet romance once their feelings are acknowledged.

Overall I enjoyed this newest entry and the blossoming romance between Jackson and Simon. They are perfectly sweet together and I love watching them create their new family together. Love this series and cannot wait for the next one!

Overall Opinion
This was another great book in the series, and I had been chomping at the bit to read Simon and Jackson's story since it was announced! Jackson and Simon were amazing characters who I could not help loving from the instant I met them. It was so full of love and spice and I couldn't stop reading. From the sweet child that is Parker, to the off-the-charts chemistry, I was spoilt with the great plot, and I can't say too much more without spoiling the plot but I definitely recommend reading this book if you're looking for a beautiful love story with a plot that keeps you glued to your kindle!

Oh, this book is very difficult to rate for me as on the one hand I had to fight tears and on the other, I skipped pages because it was just too long
There were too many sex scenes in there ... don't get me wrong, if they are well written, I love them ... but here it was just too much and not chemistry

Nevertheless, the story is well done and I am curious about the next two books

I really loved Unnecessary Roughness, both the story and the characters had so much heart and I couldn't put it down because I was so caught up in Jackson, Simon and Parker's story that I had to know how it all played out.

My heart broke for poor Parker, losing his mum the way he did and being so scared about what would happen to him. He was so lucky to have Jackson as his new parent and Simon was a huge added bonus for both Parker and Jackson. Simon was such a wonderful friend and support and I so enjoyed seeing his relationship with Jackosn change from friendship to lovers to true partners in every sense. These three make the best family and the way Parker was so accepting of the love Jackson and Simon had for him and that he loved them back just as easily was so sweet.

Jackson had the best friends and teammates and I can't wait to go back and read their stories in the first two books. I also can't wait for the next book.

Jackson Kincaid and Simon Taylor. Friends. Coworkers. Lovers?

Jackson is bisexual. Simon is straight. Jackson is fun. Simon is a hardass. Jackson is football player for the Portland Pirates. Simon is the team doctor for the Portland Pirates. Jackson is godfather to his best friend’s son. Simon is… not.

When Jackson’s best friend dies in an automobile accident, he’s called upon to take custody of his godson, Parker. Simon accompanies Jackson to Georgia to help him tie up loose ends, help Parker settle and to just be there for Jackson, who is understandably devastated. What Simon doesn’t expect is to start feeling things for his friend. Things that a straight man wouldn’t normally experience for his male best friend. Watching Jackson grieve, seeing him with Parker and spending time with him away from the football setting they’re used to starts to give Simon ideas. Ideas that, unbeknownst to Simon, Jackson has had growing in his mind as of late. Not-so-friendly ideas about things he’d like to do to and with his friend, though he won’t risk their friendship by putting the offer out there. Especially since Simon is straight… or was.

What starts out a friend helping his friend turns into insane chemistry that explodes when Jackson and Simon finally come together… literally. Neither Jackson nor Simon were expecting to find love during this time of grief and uncertainty. Simon certainly wasn’t expecting to fall in love with a man, have his heart stolen by Jackson’s godson and desire to make them his family more than anything he’s ever wanted before.

Jackson and Simon’s love story was incredibly beautiful. Simon accepts Jackson & Parker as a package deal and Parker accepts Simon as a second father figure quickly and honestly. Parker is never seen as unwanted, a nuisance or left out. He may have lost his mother, but he gained 2 fathers and a whole lot of found family when the Portland Pirates get their hands on him. This book was heartbreaking, stunningly emotional and perfectly executed. Jackson and Simon’s love is organic and pure.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and, as always, my review is unpaid and honest.

Tore me up and put me back together again.

This series just keeps getting better and better. Jackson and Simon are best friends and Simon helps Jackson adjust to being a single father after Parker’s mother dies in a car crash. Simon has never had feelings for another man before but he feels something for Jackson and he adores Parker. This story is heartbreaking in places and not only because Parker’s mother dies. Things happen to Jackson that also brought me to tears.

Unnecessary Roughness is a long story at over 100,000 words but it never felt like the story was padded with unnecessary dialogue; I read this much more quickly than I normally would a book of this length. I was invested in the relationship between Jackson and Simon right from the beginning. Simon thinks he is too old for Jackson; there is a 15-year age difference. Jackson argues that their age difference doesn’t matter. He’s learned that you have to grab hold of things while you can because you never know when your number is up. I loved how caring Simon was with both Parker and Jackson.

All of my emotions became involved as I read this book. It’s a great friends-to-lovers, age-gap and found family story. Players on the Pirates football team are very supportive of Jackson and Parker and step up to help when Jackson needs it. Characters from earlier books in the series appear in this book but I think you can read it as a standalone.

I’m looking forward to reading more books in this series; Illegal Motion is coming in February 2023.

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request and my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

What a beautiful transition from friends to family to lovers! My favorite thing about this story was that Simon was part of taking on the care of Jackson's godson from the start. He just jumped right in to support and become part of their new little family. These two have always been supportive of each other as friends but as they grow close and closer their complete love just shines! This was beautifully written, and I was totally invested in them. The progression from friends to lovers prompted out of a situation was still so natural. But they do get extra hot and spicy with each other once they get going. Loved seeing the other couples from the series pop in too!

Best of the series so far

Jackson and Simon were something else. This was a great story of best friends to lovers, closeted athlete, bi awakening, suddenly single dad. The way Simon embraced his new found sexuality was nothing short of amazing. The way Jackson dealt with all that was thrown at him so suddenly at the same time as falling in love was nothing short of fabulous.
I think their love story was just so pure.
This is a great series. Single dad athletes navigate falling in love!!!

Omg this book has NO right making me cry so often! 😭😭😭😭😭 like I was emotionally destroyed! It was supposed to be a soft sports romance! But NOOOOO these authors were like WHAT IF WE MAKE YOU FEEL THE ABSOLUTE DEPTHS of CHOSEN FAMILY and what it’s like to fall for your best friend while going through the absolute worst loss of your life? HUH?HUH? Then drizzle in some delicious spice and the MOST well earned HEA ever? HOW BOUT DAT?

And they just… did it! And with THE most talented narrators ever too!

TL:DR the book opens with Jackson (giant linebacker) and Simon (slightly less giant former military medic now team doctor) celebrating with their besties (the delightful couples from Books 1 and 2) and Jackson gets a devastating phone call. His childhood best friend has passed away in a car accident and has left his god son in his care.

He’s about to rush back to his home town when his bestie Simon offers to go with him to help him with all the details and issues. Jackson is grateful 🥹 he needs all the help he can get.

While there, they traumatize bond while trying to right their newly changed world with a little tension year old boy who has just lost his mum. Love blooms between them even though they don’t immediately see it, and still radiates within them upon coming back to Portland.

I love how these authors illustrate how it takes a village to work through such grief and loss, and the whole friend group pitches in to help Jackson and Parker, his god son right the uphill battle of change and settling in to a new life and family. Simon himself is so ingratiated into their lives that neither he nor Jackson even realize that they’ve become each other’s rocks until they’re practically lovers.

There’s emotional angst, questioning, a battle for acceptance and the newfound relationship and it’s all so wonderful to read. Of course, they make sure to give us loads of romance and *very* spicy scenes to offset all the emotional bits, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Simon is the “older” (mid-40s) team doctor and Jackson is the younger (but not that young) NFL player who just got the news his lifelong BFF jdied and he is now the legal guardian of his 10 year old godson.

Simon and Jackson are two sweet guys who start as friends, fall in love and figure it all out together.

Jackson, Simon and Parker = ❤️

5 Heartfelt stars ⭐️

This series keeps getting better and better.... This book right here, has my heart!

Wow! This one is the epitome of beauty coming from tragedy.

Jackson linebacker for the Pirates suddenly gains custody of his godson due to a tragic accident of his close childhood friend, his teams doctor and best friend Simon is there to pick up the pieces along with his other friends and teammates. What neither of them realize is that they've been crushing on each other since they met but have not taken it further due to the friendship they share and in light of this tragedy with the help of the most adorable broken little boy these two develop the most special, supportive love and family without even knowing they were destined to be together to begin with ❤️ The relationship development was perfectly written, the scenes will break your heart just to piece it back together.... this book was as emotional as it was sexy and damn was it hot!!! It was funny, sweet and just about the perfect story of love, friendship and found family. I am so excited to see what's next in this series, I have a feeling Callum and Declan are going to be epic, and let's not forget about Cooper and Greg 😉 I 100% recommend this one, it was fantastic!!

This is the third book in the Package Deal series which takes place in Portland, OR and centers on pro football players and the men they form relationships with. In this book we have defensive linebacker Jackson Kincaid and older team doctor Simon Taylor.

Jackson gets a horrifying phone call while he is at a party at his team’s QB’s house. His best friend who is back in Georgia has been killed in a car accident and named Jackson as her 10 year old son Parker’s guardian. He’s in shock and Simon offers to accompany him on his trip across the country. Their relationship develops from there.

The story is emotional and at points heart wrenching. It is wonderful to watch this new family unit develop and to bask in the glow of the found family all these characters have developed. Parker is a wonderful character and is more than the two dimensional figure we usually get with kids in romance books. He’s a full fledged character, not an accessory. The course of true love does not run smoothly but there’s not a lot of angst. The potential angst inducing situations (two of them) are vaguely referred to and happen almost completely off page. I would have kind of liked a bit more drama.

I really enjoyed the book and read it in one sitting but I have two criticisms. First, there is way too much sex for my tastes (I’m sure others may not mind this.) I’m not a prude but I like my steamy scenes to enhance the story. A lot of what occurs here seems to be sex for sex’s sake and it doesn’t add much to the character development or the story. Secondly, things progress very quickly and there are some major life issues that seem to be mentioned and then we’re moving on. I’d have liked more depth and explication to several parts of the story, especially the three significant crisis scenarios.

I am really looking forward to the next book and also hoping Cooper will be getting a book.

**I voluntarily read an arc and this is my unbiased opinion.**

UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS is the third installment in The Package Deal series. It can be read as a standalone, but I feel it is a better experience if read in the order that the authors intended.

Jackson Kincaid gets a call he never saw coming. His best friend from his childhood was in a fatal car accident leaving her ten-year-old son alone. Jackson's world is turned upside down, but he knows he has to get to Parker – that is his only concern. His friends seeing that he can't do this alone, Simon Taylor, the team doctor and one of Jackson's closest friends, goes to Atlanta with him to do what needs done for Parker.

Simon and Jackson had been dancing around their feelings for some time and when Jackson needed him the most, Simon was there. The emotional toll and closeness of the situation brought all of those feelings to the front and center, causing Simon to question himself and what he wanted. It was fast but they were it for each other. I loved the emotional rollercoaster of this one, with Parker and his needs. Simon and Jackson were such a good, emotionally exciting story. I can't wait for what's next with Callum and Declan.

Another set of new to me authors, I've been discovering a lot of new authors lately and these two made me want to look into more of their books. I love any kind of sports tropes and here we have football.

Jackson is a player for the Portland Pirates, and is enjoying life when he gets a phone call that changes his life completely. His best friend Allison, whom he's known since they were very young, has died in a car accident and has given him sole custody of her son, Jackson's godson, Parker. He immediately rushes over to the hospital to take care of Parker. In all his panic and grief for an unknown future, he can count on the support of his best friend Simon.

Simon is the team doctor and Jackson's best friend. He always thought of himself as straight, but lately he starts to see him in a different way. When he sees Jackson in distress over the sudden death of his best friend, he immediately jumps in and joins him on the trip to the hospital and help him with whatever necessary.

Jackson has been in love with Simon for ages but has never acted upon it because he always thought of Simon as straight and also to never loose his friendship. But bit by bit he notices Simon is changing and they grow really close. So close that they can't deny what's happening between them anymore and they give in to each other. They start a tentative relationship which they try to keep hidden from the rest but fail.

I loved that there was no unnecessary drama. They both did what they had to do, talked about everything that bothered them and where there for each other. I also loved the support of the whole team. They all jumped in to help whenever Jackson needed someone to be there for him.

I haven't read the previous books but I will definitely look into them.

This has been my favourite of the series, It was the saddest, funniest, and sappiest of them all, and I loved every minute of it. It was a struggle to put it down at bedtime.

Jackson and Simon became best friends the moment they both started working for the Portland Pirates. They each felt like the other just had something special. But when Simon is there for Jackson when he finds himself the guardian of his best friend's young son, things start to shift.

You can absolutely feel the friendship and love between these two. Their playfulness and care for each other are remarkably sweet and unwavering. And even though the situation is horrible and sad, they are wonderful together. Through every up and down they held on strong. And young Parker is delightful and a joy.

Through it all, as they navigate death, parenting, new love, and some really crappy grandparents, these two get sappier and sappier. It was pretty great.

There are also so many great cameos from the rest of the gang! Now let’s see if the rest of these footballers can find their way to love.

I don't think I've read a cuter romance in quite some time. Jackson and Simon were just so sweet it made my teeth ache. They were very mature in their feelings and I loved that neither of them shied away from discussing how they felt or any of the hard stuff. And the way they both adored Parker? Total heart eyes.

On top of all the feels there was plenty of steam. I'm talking fanning yourself with your kindle steam. You won't see me complaining one bit, no siree. I also loved how all the previous MCs and side characters we've come to love all rallied around Jackson when he needed them. It shows what a family they really are.

Speaking of their found family, I'm chomping at the bit for Greg to get his damn head out of his ass when it comes to Cooper. I don't know how much more teasing I can take when it comes to them and they aren't even next. That honor goes to Coopers BFF Callum and a certain southern charmer who has recently joined the ranks of the Pirates. He also just so happens to have been welcomed into their little group so I expect things are going to get pretty interesting at the next get together after the sneak peek we got of their meet cute. Unfortunately, authors are not magicians and we have to wait til February 2023 for it all to play out!

There was nothing as rough as one minute celebrating the marriages of two couples that Jackson and Simon were close to and then getting a phone call that would change their lives. Jackson's best friend Allison, with whom he escaped small town life to go to college, dies in an accident and she named him her next of kin and the guardian for her son Parker. Jackson's life must shift quickly from single professional athlete to parent to a grieving young man and to living in a world without one of his besties. He still has Simon though. Simon, the tough team doctor, who is a bit older than him but who is there with him from the phone call that changed his life to the adjustment to single parenthood. Jackson has a lot of close friends, chosen family that are there for him. But Simon becomes an integral part of his and Parker's life. Although Jackson knew he had feelings beyond friendship for Simon in being there for Jackson, Simon also learns that he has feelings that go beyond friendship for him as well. This is emotional and also really neat as these two forge forward and make a life of love with one another and for Parker.

This is book 3 of the Package Deal series. It can be read as a stand alone but you really should read the earlier books first so that you understand all the secondary characters and their relationships better. This is the story of Jackson Kincaid and Simon Taylor. Jackson is enjoying his life as a professional football player. His world is thrown upside down with the death of his best friend Allison. Together the two of them had done everything they could to escape their hometown and toxic family. It made an unbreakable bond between them. Suddenly his best friend is gone and she left her son in his care. Not even having time to grieve for her, he has to fly off and get his godson Parker. But as he goes to fly out, his found family steps up to help. He has tickets, a place to stay, and company. His best friend on the team, Simon, joins him. Simon is the Portland Pirates Team Doctor. Simon drops everything to support Jackson. While Jackson is looking afer Parker, Simon is looking after the both of them. This is their story. It is very well written and easy to read. We get to see how Parker, Jackson and Simon deal with their grief and new lives. I really enjoyed it.

I’m really loving this series and this latest book is my favorite so far. Unnecessary Roughness really takes you on an emotional journey, with beautiful highs and brutal lows. The early chapters are especially heartbreaking, the grief that Parker and Jackson suffer after the sudden death of Allison is so very painful to read. It was beautifully handled though, very real and very raw. Jackson is quite the hero in this, he really steps up and is determination to be what Parker needs. I loved that the relationship between Simon and Jackson has little angst, it was a good way to balance more painful parts of the story. They are wonderfully swoony together! I also love getting to see the relationship grow over most of the book, and not just having them get together for the last chapter or two. Parker, Simon, and Jackson managed to build themselves a beautiful life out of tragedy with a little help from their Portland Pirates family and I loved every page of it!❤️❤️

It’s tough to review some books because even if they’re not what I’d consider bad, they are just not for me. Unnecessary Roughness is well written and very sweet, but a little too sweet for my tastes. The romance is okay, but I think I’d enjoy this much more if I’d read the whole series. I thought this could be read as a standalone, but the very first chapter is filled with people I do not know or do I care about. We’re then immediately told of Allison’s death and Parker being an orphan, before I even get to care about Jackson or Simon. The relationship between the two is very, “he’s so great! But no, we can’t, he doesn’t feel the same. But I like him!” If felt a little juvenile, even as we read about the harsh reality of raising a kid who just lost his mother.

This was not for me, but fans of the series will adore it. It’s a sweet tale of family and healing, but parts of it were a bit of a slog. Overall, this rounds out to 3.5 stars.

So so very fluffy. After an otherwise decent start, the complete lack of any conflict between Jackson and Simon made this an incredibly dull story. And it has >400 pages! What the hell is the book going to be about? The amount of sex Jackson and Simon have?

There's all this weird foreshadowing around possible conflicts that never amount to anything. Like Caroline had some very sus moments and almost seemed like she had ulterior motives. Jackson's team at one small point was kinda hinted at new players. Parker's grandparents possibly claiming custody. But none of them showed up since everything was just going smoothly.

Will there be problems later on the story? I don't know and at this point, don't care to find out because I've read over half and been bored by the sheer lack of conflict and the indulgent references to previous MCs (We get it. The MCs from the previous books still love each other deeply, there was no need to point it out every time one of the couples was on screen)

This book has all the feels... if death of a close friend is a trigger for you than you'll probably want to skip this story, because Jackson, Simon & Parker deal with Allison's death and the lingering trauma from this terrible tragedy throughout the book, but if you're willing to sacrifice some tissues, the story is steamy, sweet and uplifting in so many ways! This book is truly an exploration of friends to lovers, finding the right man at the right time and exploring found family and written in a beautiful and well paced way that keeps even this covid addled brain focused and right in their world from Portland to Georgia and back...

Unnecessary Roughness has it all - friendship, bi-awakening, steam, hot football players, found family, adorable puppies, kids and more! It can be read standalone, but you'll definitely enjoy it more if you've read the first two books in the Package Deal series!

Jackson and Simon’s story is a rollercoaster ride that will have you reaching for the tissues and grinning from ear to ear with happy tears by the end of their story.⁣

It has been a long time since a book has affected me as much as this book did. Even writing this review, thinking about the book, has tears forming in my eyes. Jackson and Simon are perfect for each other and you can feel their emotions pouring off the page and add in little Parker and it fills your heart to bursting for this little family.⁣

Boring!

I absolutely loved this book! Simon and Jackson were such amazing characters and I loved seeing their friendship turn into so much more! Friends-to-lovers is always such a great trope...when it is done right and this book got it exactly right! I loved that Jackson and Simon's relationship never felt forced or awkward but simply just a natural progression of the relationship they already had. Parker was a freaking sweetheart and seeing him find love and happiness with Jackson and Simon was so beautiful. I loved the little family those three made and it helped them all become even better versions of themselves by the end of the book. The epilogue was so sweet and I can't wait to see what is next for this author and series!
