So the director of Train to Busan wrote a comic. Unfortunately, it's boring. The initial premise borrows from The Ring. People see visions where they are told when they will die, be it three days later or twenty years. At that time, three hulking skinned creatures show up and attack the person until all that's left is a burnt out torso. Outside these one or two instances where something happens the rest is people talking. A couple of cults start up around these killings having to do with committing sin or being absolved of it. There's so much proselytizing BS that I found myself repeatedly looking to see how long before this was over. I had the same feeling as when you're trapped at a relative's dance recital for several hours.

I can certainly appreciate the unique idea behind this plot.
It was a fast-paced read, due to the action and dialogue but also due to the fact that there was multiple pages with no dialogue - just the actions of the characters.
I felt that more should have happened in this volume, but I guess it's all set up for volume 2 and a story continuation.
All in all, I think it's a decent first volume to a series and I'm interested to see where it goes from here.

Slow, boring, and bogged down by a metric ton of dialogue, plenty of which is pointless filler. Plus, not only were the monsters goofy looking, we only see them like three times throughout the entire volume.

Pas de doute, c'est une bd qui fait réfléchir. On vogue vraiment dans une anxiété ambiante très profonde. Que croire aujourd'hui ? Qui croire ? Pourquoi ? Ici, pas de sentiments positifs, juste la peur, la haine, la division, le sectarisme. Chaque individu est poussé dans ses retranchements par peur d'être. Et tout ça sur fond de fanatisme religieux, de possession et de réseaux sociaux.

This has some interesting ideas. Theology in a technological age literalized in a very strange way, for one. But it also doesn’t make much sense. Maybe the second volume answers some of them, but it sure felt less cohesive because it undermined the questions it poses by essentially hand waving everything. Maybe this is something you roll with in horror? I tend to avoid it. I will read the second volume because I do want the answers, but I can see why it’s polarizing. I also found out via the cover that it was made into a Netflix show, which I had not heard about and am a bit curious about.
Neat that this made the Eisners though. Its worth checking out, even if a couple other titles, like Talk To My Back, feel quite a bit stronger, overall.

Yeon Sang-Ho and Choi Gyu-Seok creation "The Hellbound, Vol 1" is a multi layered work which has a conventional beginning for a horror graphic work but there are several interesting twists. The writing is a mediation on human frailty and the need for humanity to find reasons for why events happen in the lives of individuals. The conceit of the work is shocking for the reader. The storylines don't neatly end.
The artwork exceeds in driving the narrative. The dark and moody frames brings about a sense of foreboding in the lives of the characters. The only drawback is the small format of the publication. The art work by Choi Gyu-Seok would have been enhanced for the reader if it had been in large format. The inkwork is superb.
Highly recommended for those who want to think about life, living, and the reason "why".

This is a manhwa that follows a Korean town plagued by mysterious creatures. A person gets a vision that they're to be dragged to hell in a certain amount of time. These monsters come out of nowhere and take you out.
This series is a complex interesting concept. It discusses a lot of philosophical and sociological themes. From cult culture to mob mentality and insanity. It shows how far a person will go when they're driven by fear. It also discusses faith in some instances.
I really loved this, and can't wait to see how this ends in the next volume. If you're looking for a thought provoking horror comic, I recommend it! There's also a K-drama on Netflix!

«Поклик пекла» Йона Санхо став для мене вже другою південнокорейською манхвою після «Крайнебо» Чон Джіхуна. Коли вперше побачив анонс цієї манхви, вона привернула мою увагу своїм незвичним та жорстким сюжетом, який поєднує елементи релігійної драми, містики та соціального аспекту. Можу сказати, що манхва не розчарувала, хоча й не стала для мене якимось шедевром.
У «Поклику пекла» описується вигаданий, але водночас жахливо реалістичний світ, де люди отримують повідомлення від невідомих сил, що повідомляють їм дату і час, коли вони будуть забрані до пекла. Це жахливе видіння стає реальністю, коли величезні надприродні істоти приходять і буквально розривають людей на шматки. Серед цього хаосу народжується нова релігійна секта, яка стверджує, що це — божественне покарання за гріхи. Сюжет манхви слідує за детективом Джін Ґьохуном, який намагається розібратися в цій загрозливій ситуації та зрозуміти дотичність до цих подій новоствореного релігійного руху, в голові якого стоїть Чон Джінсу. Весь цей хаос переплітається з питаннями віри, фанатизму, сімейної драми і природи людських вчинків. Одні шукають у цьому знак з неба, інші — страх і покарання.
Найбільше вражає те, як манхва здатна тримати увагу. Напруга, яка виникає через постійне невизначене майбутнє, коли кожен герой у будь-який момент може опинитися серед жертв, тримає у напрузі. Кожні кілька десятків сторінок — це черговий крок до відповіді на питання, що ж насправді відбувається, але жоден з них не дає чіткої відповіді. Така невизначеність і постійне відчуття катастрофи змушують співпереживати персонажам, особливо матері двох дітей, яка отримала повідомлення про поклик до пекла. Також вважаю великим плюсом те, як манхва поступово занурює у всіх персонажів і дає можливість поглянути на їхні внутрішні переживання.
Детектив Джін Ґьонхун — це тип людини, яка здається впевненою і твердо стоїть на ногах. Але, насправді, він дуже вразливий. Його особиста трагедія (вбивство дружини та труднощі у стосунках з сином) накладає тягар на його дії, що робить його більше людяним, аніж просто героєм, що розслідує страшні злочини. Він намагається знайти логіку в цих страшних подіях, але, ймовірно, не зовсім готовий до того, що це не просто природні явища, а, можливо, божественне правосуддя. Водночас, лідер секти Чон Джінсу зображений як месія, який використовує релігію для маніпуляцій. Його фанатизм, спрямований на виправдання насильства і вбивств як божественного покарання, насправді є однією з основних тем манхви — наслідки бездумної віри і фанатизму.
Малюнок Чхве Ґюсука дуже детальний і атмосферний. Сцени з пекельними монстрами, моменти напруження та жахів мають чудову виразність. А спокійні моменти відзначаються добре деталізованими кадрами, які затамовують подих перед якимись жахливими подіями. Можливо, інколи можна помітити певну нечіткість або дивні варіації ліній в фонових деталях, але це не впливає на загальне враження. Особливо хочу відзначити спосіб, яким художник передає емоції персонажів — вирази обличчя, рухи, напруга в сценах боротьби з монстрами, все це дуже добре виглядає.
Можливо комусь не сподобається досить повільний розвиток подій. І хтось може сказати, що на початку багато часу витрачається на те, щоб описати світ, персонажів і їхні внутрішні переживання, в той час як динаміка майже відсутня. Мені особисто це не завадило, а спрацювало навспак. Більше турбувала не зовсім зрозуміла мотивація деяких персонажів, зокрема тих хто намагається знайти сенс у цьому хаосі.
«Поклик пекла» — це манхва, яка поєднує філософські питання і релігійні теми з напруженою містичною атмосферою. Незважаючи на повільний розвиток і певні сюжетні недоліки, історія відзначається своєю напругою та інтригуючими персонажами. Особисто мені сподобалося і є бажання прочитати наступний том, адже хочеться дізнатися, як розвиватиметься ця історія далі.

Questo è stato il mio primo manga in assoluto e devo dire che sono partito proprio bene. Bellissimo dall'inizio alla fine. Essendo il mio primo manga all'inizio ho fatto un po' fatica a capire ma poi mi è cominciato a piacere sempre di più. Credo che leggerò anche il secondo. È finito in un modo assurdo. Non riesco ad aspettare devo subito avere il secondo. La storia è molto originale. Bellissimo tutta la faccenda che con un messaggio dove dice andrai all'inferno il tal giorno, la tal data alle ore... Molto bello😍♥️. Poi tutto il panico delle persone, i poliziotti che cercano di capire come è potuto succedere, le indagini stupende. Poi molto bello anche l'argomento che tuttavwuesta cosa è volere di Dio. È fatto proprio bene questo manga. Adorato😍😍😍😍

After finding this in a bookshop and buying it on a impulse, I'm really pleased that I did. This is a Korean manga, with extremely detailed illustrations throughout.
I focuses on individuals receiving a notification on their phones, giving them a exact date and time until they're sent to Hell. When they're time runs out, a group of massive demons hunt them down and kill them. We soon discover that this is happening only to criminals, and as a result numerous cults and religious groups are formed. They argue that this is a sign from God and people should repent for their sins.
This has excellent characters that make you feel sorry for them. Like a father how is grieving the loose of his wife, while still doing his best for his son. Also a mother who has to give up her two small children, because she has received this notification. Highly recommend.

May 20, 2022Ma critique est pour les deux tomes qui forment un récit complet. Un drôle de thriller surnaturel qui flirte avec l'horreur. Une sorte de mélange de Death Note et de Ringu où des personnes reçoivent des messages de l'au-delà les avertissant qu'ils vont être damnés dans un certain délai de temps (qui peut être entre plusieurs années ou quelques minutes). Immanquablement, la victime se fait attaquer et brûler vive au moment prévu par des démons. L'histoire suit à la fois une enquête policière et une secte qui interprète ces "damnations" comme une punition divine qui vise à montrer aux humains les conséquences du péché. Très verbeux et l'intrigue est bien ficelée.

An exceptional well paced story filled with the horrible conclusion that we ourselves are the monsters we talk about. Also an in depth study on societal norms, cults and extreme politics. What a good work.

A grim horror manhwa with a hooky premise: people, maybe or maybe not selected at random, are getting visitations by a supernatural force predicting the time of their death. When that time comes, they are publically slaughtered and reduced to charred corpses by three demonic monsters.
That hook makes you think the emphasis is going to be on the monstrous killings, and plenty of reviews here stand as testimony to how the book disappoints those hopes. We only see the creatures a few times - the emphasis throughout is on how Korean society reacts to the events, and the weak points and faultlines they expose. The most horrific scenes aren't the supernatural killings, but the actions of the cult around them as the victims' families and police investigators are doxxed and hunted in turn. The result isn't a supernatural thrill- or gore-fest, but a claustrophobic contemporary horror based around what it feels like to be targeted and singled out, whether by monsters or the mob.
It's good, intelligent, but rough going (partly because its webtoon origins mean slightly jittery pacing but mostly because it's so horribly tense all the time). It's not really spoiling much to say that if your interest is in definitive answers about the premise or the book's cosmology you won't be getting them: The Hellbound sells itself on the cause, but only cares about the effect.

💀 І от, знаєте, да. Начебто і задумка кльова: пред світлі очі персонажа являється обличчя жінки в сльозах, яка повідомляє, коли той помре з точністю до секунди. І таки да, таки являються троє з рундука, однакові з лиця, сжирають тіло і до побачення, євробачення. Шикарний привід для буйного розквіту секточек, які точно знають, що то був страшний грішник і його забрали у пекло, сотона-експресом. Фанатіки камлають, лідери сект оруть, нарід шо ті баранці, погодливо мекають.
☠️ Але якось всьо то реалізовано геть нецікаво: дій мінімум, жахів крапелиночка, зате пафосу хоч греблю гати.

I really enjoyed the premise, but I felt the Netflix show was missing some information. I hoped that the manhwa would continue where the show left off, but it's just 1:1 the show? I'm a bit disappointed.

Honestly just found this MEH. It sounded so good and the illustrations are amazing but the story just doesn’t hold up for me.

3.5 Stars. I'm so torn on this; I loved the concept but I didn't love the execution. I liked that we had a police officer, a lawyer and a kinda-but-not cult leader as the main characters, as well as the design of the "monsters" that bring people to hell. I didn't like some story beats and I didn't like the reason why people were chosen to be send to hell . I'm unsure if I want to continue the series. Maybe I'll watch the Netflix series, because I heard there was one, and see how they deal with the story idea in that medium.

Meh. I really wanted to like it more than I did. Nothing against the author or illustrator, it just didn’t really grab me. There was a lot going on, yet also not a lot happened. It is a good concept though, and I think it poses interesting questions about morality.

A book that has a lot to say about guilt, sin and religion, and knows how to translate those themes into a real horror. The pacing makes it feel like this operatic race against the clock, much like a manga like ‘Death Note’ could get at points. But unfortunately the art, translation and glut of characters don’t work together well, and it makes for a confusing read where it’s difficult to piece things together, making certain moments hit less hard. Overall though, when it stops to contemplate its themes, it clearly has a lot to say. I might check out the second volume or the show

Travolgente ed estremamente cupo.
Il mio primo manhwa è un SI assoluto.
Il cuore della storia, cioè l’esistenza o meno del libero arbitrio inteso come scegliere senza essere condizionati dalla paura di una punizione, è un tema estremamente complesso.
Qui viene srotolato nella forma di un thriller sovrannaturale mixato a un trattato sociologico sul fenomeno delle sette religiose e del radicalismo.
Stupendo.
Il mio primo manhwa è un SI assoluto.

This is actually so cinematic that I think it worked better as a tv series. In fact Netflix fixed the visuals of the Arrowheads so they are not using Native American imagery like in the manhwa.

I was skeptical this was gonna be mostly cheesy when the book slapped the concept in my face right out of the gate: there's a growing phenomenon of people around the world getting a divine notice that they are going to hell, precisely it will happen, and then demonic monsters burst out of the ether and brutally murder them. A little kitschy, but can this concept hold up a whole book (with a second volume already published)? I'm happy to report: yes! Any good story idea can be exploited from every angle to deliver depth and Yeon Sang-Ho does so here.
A religious group crops up with spiritual answers for this terrifying phenomenon called The New Truth Society with a messianic leader. Is this phenomenon legit or a ploy by this messiah figure? Are these victims being punished for condemnable sins or just randomly? Society begins to spin out of control in its need for meaning as violently fanatic sects of the New Truth emerge and threaten our central characters. The images of unhinged fanatics weaponized by corrupt leaders causing social unrest feel close to home in 2022 (this was published in 2020) and this mania is the true horror of the book.
The top negative reviews for this book are some guys complaining about too much dialogue and not enough monsters (c'mon my dudes, all best horror works know that the scariest thing in the world is the darker shades of human nature). That's a decidedly shallow take on this book, as the dialogue exploring nihilism, free will, fanaticism, depravity, and the nature of God alongside the mounting tension of story are where the meat is (even if it ani't prime meat). Not saying some of the dialogue doesn't verge on melodramatic silliness, but there's interesting ideas being explored even if not masterfully.
Main complaint: though the expressiveness of our characters was incredible, often their surroundings seemed oddly computer generated, like 3D images were just superimposed into the background that don't match the rest of the art style. It was weird and distracting.
Anyway, I'm excited to pick up the next volume as plenty of mystery and tension linger.
