The Last Eternal #7

The Wages of an Assassin: Book Seven of The Last Eternal

Rate this book
The wages of a soldier are pain and regret his reward.

Soldier himself had told the wanderer that. Old words from another life but true words nonetheless. The wanderer knew this, for he still carried the scars such pain had brought, and a life spent on the run left a man little else but his regrets.

Yet of all the challenges the wanderer has faced, of all the dangers in a life full of little else, the worst lies before him. For he faces not a warrior or even some rampaging beast or monster.

He faces Assassin. The deadliest killer ever to walk the face of the world. She has come for him, for his friends.

Pain and regret may be a soldier’s rewards, but the creature who comes for him and his friends is no soldier. She is a lurker in the shadows, an assassin, and so she will have an assassin’s wage.

She seeks death…

The wanderer means to help her find it.

There are some similarities to the previous book, but with some welcome twists.
Early on we get to hear the history of the making of the cursed sword, and there’s a surprise.
Another meeting with a crime boss, which was a too long chapter. But again there is a twist to this Haggarty person.
Then there’s another fight and Ungr doesn’t get hurt much, so low stakes here.
And the end just wraps up pretty neatly. I do like the twist with the sword. But the confrontation with Assassin herself is too quick.
However I like the unexpected person who shows up at the end.
Hoping for more unexpected events.

The Wages of an Assassin is a dark, gripping installment in The Last Eternal series, as Ungr and his companions find themselves hunted in the city of Celes by the deadliest assassin in the world. With danger around every corner, unlikely alliances, and the ever-looming threat of the Shimmering, survival is anything but guaranteed.

What I loved:

The introduction of fascinating new characters like Mother V and Haggarty, who added depth, danger, and unpredictability to the story

Ungr continuing to evolve — watching his growth, doubts, and the moral weight he carries made him even more compelling

The fights — tense, brutal, and full of consequence; each one felt personal and real

Jacob Peppers nails the pacing, the atmosphere, and the emotional depth. This series just keeps getting better, and I can't wait to see what’s coming next.

Ungr and his friends are in Celes trying to stay alive while at the same time trying to save the world. With the darkness moving closer and closer there doesn’t seem to be an answer. Ungr tries to hook up with the baddest criminal in town to come up with an army or some other way to the evil. As more and more citizens die, Ungr forges a new friendship while still fighting the monsters of darkness. Again, Jacob has taken us to the precipice os what happens next ! Definitely a must read as we continue the story of The Last Eternal !

Within the darkest shadows she lurks. The most lethal of killers. Precise and silent. She has hunted. The prey now at last enters her domain.

Book 7 continues its bleak apocalyptic hunt of humanity’s last hope. As always action packed, great lovable characters and dash of humour.

Much thanks to the author for this ARC!

The Wanderer has to face the fake Assassin to save his friends and the world.

Instead of real action, there’s a lot of metaphorical, dreamlike stuff in here. And a lot of talking over things. I skimmed through most of it.

Fave scenes: the Wanderer leaving the gate open, the real Assassins advice, Boulder’s reunion with Mother and Dekker admonishing Elizabeth.

Another gripping instalment in the tale of the Youngest Eternal

Ungr, Youngest, The Wanderer - whatever you call him, you cannot help but be impressed by his 100 years plus wandering the world trying to keep a magic sword away from those who would use it to destroy, and to protect the innocent where he can.

This book is the seventh in the series, and is easily as good as the preceding books with no sign of the series faltering as sometimes happens with other authors. Jacob writes as powerfully as always and shows no sign of running out of storyline, so I strongly suspect that we are still a way from the end of the series. That suits me - I can't wait for the next one!

So, do you need to read the other six books first? Well, it would give you a good grounding in the characters and the reasons why The Wanderer does what he does, so that would be a good idea. Yet, you could easily read it stand alone if you can take it at face value without the history. Up to you to decide...

Whatever you decide, I highly recommend this book and the series.

It is amazing how often we are dependent on somebody else for love or comfort or friendship or survival.
Ungr would never have guessed that approaching the meanest and deadliest villain in all of Celes might and would prove to be their means of survival.
Being an Eternal, why then?
Mainly because he has friends. And he feels obligated to keep safe. And because an entity called Assassin intends to kill them. An entity he is supposed to know but who is an impossible imposter instead.
An imposter nobody might be able to outsmart and kill.
Author Jacob Peppers once again crafted a nail biting thriller that will haunt you as was Ungr.
Enjoy.

Assassins and more

I’m so glad the new book came when it did. Mr Peppers executed and delivered an exciting and breathtaking novel the continues this marvelous story again. The story, the characters and violence continues with hope and courage. Ungr continues his path, keeps his friends closer and delivers one fight after another. Can’t wait for the next book, please hurry!!!

Something special.

I love this series. The author is a gifted storyteller. This is a very special thing. It means when you pick up the book and you start reading you, you don’t finish until you get till the end. And then you can’t wait for the next book. That is a gifted storyteller.

The last eternal

Another great adventure Jacob. When another one of your last eternal comes through, I put everything e!we away. To watch the "wanderer" grow into the man he was meant to be, and to see the love and respect he gains from his ever growing family...its just great!
The fighting action is not too shabby either.
Thank you. Looking forward to the next adventure.

7Books with the Eternal saga isn't enough!

Ok that was a great deal of pain to deal with. But then there was a bit of sun shinning in the darkness! And there is now one less evil creature too!

This has been a great series. Can not wait for the next book. Great characters. Hope the next book is here in a hurry. This has been, in my opinion, one of the best series of books I have read on kindle unlimited.

Enjoyed this one as much as all the previous. Not a great big story in itself but part of a larger story obviously. I like the style. Each book focuses on a different part of the bigger story but so far each book has felt very different in setting and style.

Another amazing story of the Wanderer. He’s trying hard to keep the sword safe from those that would use it for evil. Once you start reading, there’s no stopping.

I've enjoyed all the stories so far, but definitely this one was best so far. And I'd never have guessed the surprise. Very good.

strong series if you like a classic anti hero with a little humour

I liked this overall. I like the characters and the way the series’s is going. I feel it would be nice to read it all in one go as it kind of feels like the by time it really gets going it’s coming to an end but not so long to wait.

The story continues to be awesome. I read the book before launch day and could not put it down. The wanderer is one of my favourite characters all time.
