Clara Kelly only wants to be free. Fleeing her abusive husband and holing up in his empty historic Salem, Massachusetts house, she’s shocked to find it already occupied by the ghosts of a sad-eyed Union soldier and cat. Afraid every moment she lingers will bring more trouble, she tries to ignore his pleas. But after the desperate spirit agrees to aid a puppy in peril in exchange for her help, Clara relents to playing sleuth while looking over her shoulder for the slime who made her marriage a living hell.

Can she find purpose in parting the veil of possibilities?

Synopsis
To escape her abusive husband, she fled to Salem and changed her name. Being on the run, Clara didn't expect to make friends but soon she and a ghost became temporary roommates. And, just as she was about to bolt for the second time, a car accident left a college kid dead with his ghost insisting that she solve his murder. This was not what Clara was expecting from her new fugitive life.

Main Character
Clara came out swinging, right from the start. Now that she had freed herself, she was willing to overcome small discomforts to succeed in her new reality - such an admirable person! Capable and determined, Clara is the kind of character a reader cares about and happily follows on her adventures.

Setting
This book couldn't have a better setting than Salem, MA. The city's perceived spookiness, combined with its rich history, was the ideal backdrop. The gorgeous old architecture also plays a large part in setting the stage.

Plot
For a first-time investigator, Clara was incredibly skilful and perceptive. It was immensely pleasurable to attempt to solve the mystery before the heroine - alas, she outplayed me. Nonetheless, I relished the challenge and the solution, when presented, was satisfying.

Final Thoughts
This was the type of paranormal cosy that I favour. The ghost was a worthy part of the story, not shoehorned in to appeal to a particular audience. The story was nicely tied up, making it possible to read this as a standalone - not that you would want to. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Thank you to Dina Marie and BookSirens for the opportunity to read this eARC. My opinions are my own, honest and true.

This book was a bit challenging for me to rate, but for good reasons. On one hand, I thoroughly enjoyed the plot—it’s a delightful cozy mystery with intriguing characters and a beautifully crafted setting. The story kept me engaged throughout, and the ending left me eager for more.

However, I ended up giving it three stars mainly because I struggled with the writing style. The frequent pop culture references felt distracting at times, pulling me out of the narrative. That said, the plot itself was compelling enough to keep me hooked, and despite my reservations, I’m excited to continue the series. I’ll definitely be picking up the next book, because I just have to know what happens next!

A Ghostly Family . . .

Filled with determination despite her fear, Clara Kelly (Emily) has to run for her life from her abusive husband. Cold, wet, broke, and starving, she enters the old empty historic home in Salem, 3 states away from her pursuer, to get out of the rain. Thoroughly exhausted, she laid on the cold hard floor and, shivering from the cold, went to sleep. A voice startled her awake. Instead of having to accost an “attacker”, she looked down at a thick, smelly old blanket that had been covering her. Where had it come from? Distracted by the voice again, she looked out the door’s dirty window and saw an old man she would eventually find out was the neighbor, Archie Wiggins, entering the house next door. When she discovers there are ghosts occupying the residence, the reader is introduced to William, a ghost from civil war days; she also meets a ghost cat who keeps William company; and when a car accident occurs outside, we then meet the ghost of the college-age victim, Beckett Miller, who asks Clara to solve his murder and gets her to agree by offering to help her rescue a little dog (“Dog”) stuck in a pipe in return for her help. Is she ready to find justice for him? But there is still more to come...

The author does a wonderful job building the scenes right before the reader’s eyes, then pulling us in to become a part of the action. The characters are also described well so that they become real and recognizable, with humor interspersed to keep the reader comfortable. I already know this series is for me! It has a bit of everything I enjoy in a cozy mystery. Grab your copy and come along on Clara’s adventure. Is she safe here? Has she finally found an odd collection of family who love and care for her? Or will she be forced to run yet again?

First off, I really liked this book and I think it can be enjoyed by a wide variety of readers. Was it life changing? No. But it was really good for what it was - a cutesy, feel good story. I liked that it took a different angle than any other book I've read in what I would classify as the same genre. Not saying there aren't any out there, but I have never stumbled upon them.

All the character's brought their own charm to the narrative, and there wasn't a single one I found unbearable. If I can say anything "negative" in regards to the characters it would be that the character development from start to finish of the book was limited. Now this is a series so I might very well have a different opinion after reading the last book.

The one star I take off is due to the mentioned character development, but also due to the fact that the story felt rushed in certain parts of the book. The book had two main storylines, one being the main character running from an abusive husband, the other being amateur sleuthing with ghosts. I understand the inclusion of the husband, it does bring an interesting connection between the two storylines. However I feel it wasn't explored enough to add anything to the story but rather it distracted, and it was mostly the parts pertaining to the husband that felt rushed. Now, as mentioned this is a series and the husband angle might be explored more in the following books.

Summarized - Going Ghost is a perfect book if you want to curl up on the couch with a cup of tea (or hot beverage of choice) and a good, well-written, easy read.

Well done Dina Marie!

I loved this story and the town of Salem.
Clara Kelly escapes to Salem to get away from her husband who has been horrible to her ever since they married. She decides to lay low in a house in Salem that has been in her husband's family for many generations. Once getting to the house, she meets a ghost who has lived in the house for many, many years. The town has a strange effect on her. She can't help but go around the town introducing herself all the while scolding herself for talking so much to strangers since she is trying to not be discovered by anyone who might know her husband. Not long after she arrives at the house, she witnessed a wreck right in front of the house which a young man is struck by an older ladies vehicle. The ghost from the accident puts the burden on Clara to figure out who murdered him.
So how is Clara supposed to lay low while also trying to figure out who would have hurt or even murdered this young man. She meets the neighbor and others along the way. She even finds herself a dog a long the way. I really enjoyed this cozy mystery and I look forward to more books in the series.

This clever, well-written book includes some of my favorite elements (a haunted house, a cute dog, and a heroine who’s trying to reinvent herself). Clara Kelly is a survivor and even though life has dealt her some bad cards and she has every reason to be distrustful, she’s still a kindhearted and empathetic person. She immediately connects with William, the handsome, Civil War Era ghost who’s the former owner of her “new” home in Salem (the perfect spooky location for a mystery!). And William’s not the only spirit Clara can communicate with as the ghost of a young man whose tragic death she witnessed begs for her help in solving his murder.

The premise of this story is unique and so suspenseful that I couldn't stop turning the pages! A lot of questions were raised in this book that I want answers to, so I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series and I’m delighted to have discovered this talented author’s work. What a great beginning to a series! Clara is on the run from her abusive husband. She hides away in a vacant home her husband owns, only to discover she can see ghosts. And this house is haunted. When a local man is murdered, he (his ghost) begs Clara for help. But staying in this place was only supposed to be temporary.

Clara is a really likeable character; she is brave, strong, and kind, despite having a difficult past few years. Her backstory is sad and tragic, without being overly graphic to the reader. There are some other secondary characters that I enjoyed; William, Ghost Cat, Boy, Mr. Wiggins, and Sebastian, to name a few. I think there is a lot of potential in this series with such a great area and great supporting characters.

The mystery was not overly easy to figure out, which I appreciate because I like to try and solve the mystery with the character. There were enough suspects and motives to keep it interesting. I thought the story was well thought out and put together. I really enjoyed the ending; I was so happy for Clara to have some freedom.

Just in time for the fall season, I run into a LOVELY, cozy mystery.

I love Clara, who's got her work cut out for her, and I can't wait to read more about her ghost whispering adventures. I think her husband got exactly what he deserved, and don't you just love a gallant ghost?? William is swoon-worthy!

I like that the case she was sleuthing wasn't too complicated, you don't need it to be in these types of books, but it had just enough edge and adventure to keep you reading.

Clara's healing journey has just begun, but I think, with William, her dog, and the ghost cat by her side, she can do it.

The author writes wonderfully well, not using too long sentences but keeping you engaged and making you feel like you're right there with our heroine. Plus, setting it in Salem was a great idea, considering the setting!

All in all, definitely recommend.

Clara Kelly is trying to escape her abusive husband Joe.
In desperation she holes up at one of his old properties just until she thinks of somewhere more permanent to go and plan what to do next.
What she DOESN'T bank on is the house being haunted by an old soldier called William only she can see.
Then there is the case of Beckett, a local boy who is struck down by a car.
He believes his death wasn't just an accident so coerced Clara into helping him solve the mystery.
Throw in an unwanted, stray dog and Clara is starting to worryingly put down roots in a place where Joe may find her any time he thought of looking.
Can she really help all who are now relying on her and can she tear herself away from a place that's starting to feel like home and at the same time escape Joe's clutches...
I absolutely loved this, adored the characters and the story, what a great start to a series and a perfect fun and spooky read for the Halloween season.

Going Ghost by Dina Marie
3.5 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ✨

Clara’s escape from her abusive ex isn’t a desperate flight—it’s a calculated plan she executes flawlessly. Settling into an abandoned family home, she begins rebuilding her life with unexpected help from a ghost tied to the property’s generations and a loyal stray dog who refuses to leave her side.

While Clara adjusts to her new reality, a separate murder mystery unfolds in town, creating an odd balance between her personal healing and the community’s darker secrets. Her ex briefly reappears but feels more like a background note than a true threat.

The ghost and dog provide the story’s warmth and emotional grounding, even when the pacing feels uneven. Though the book sometimes reads like two stories sharing space, it still delivers a thoughtful mix of strength, survival, and quiet supernatural comfort.

Going Ghost is a delightfully spirited tale set in Salem, which had me hooked fright from the start!

With an endearingly kind FMC, Clara, who’s desperate to escape a bad marriage, a house with a little more atmosphere than you’d probably expect and the awakening of Clara’s ability to see and speak with ghosts, it’s a perfect read for those who love a good cozy mystery.

The author’s love for her characters really shines through every word, right through to the furry ones, who are by no means least. It’s great that there’s a satisfying ending to the tale, so you’re not left waiting for the next book. Having said that…I’m so excited for the next book! I can’t wait to see where the author takes us with Clara and her new friends.

I read this book on the plane. It was light enough to be entertaining without having to keep track of too many characters and clues. The main character, Clara, escapes her controlling husband by hiding in a property he owns but only occasionally visits. While roughing it she learns that she can talk to ghosts. One ghost is bad enough but when a young man gets hit by a car in front of her, his ghost enlists her help to find his murderer. Along the way she finds love again in the form of an abandoned dog and learns she's pretty good at snooping. All she needs to do is find the murderer before her husband finds her.

This was really cute! I love a human and ghost team solving mysteries.

Poor Clara had realy been through it running from an abusive ex. But Salem really turned into her refuge. She’s staying in an empty house her husband owns with its own ghost, ghost cat, and a new dog. And living on rotisserie chicken. Until see hears an accident and has to help a new ghost solve his own murder.

The mystery was fun and the setting was superb. I really
Enjoyed the ghost, William, and how kind and helpful he was. I’m curious about his life and can’t wait to unravel that mystery. Salem is the perfect town for this!

Thanks to booksirens for the arc!

Most of my favorite cozy mysteries have ghosts or paranormal themes. So, this book was right up my alley. Clara is trying to escape her abusive husband and runs away to Salem and stays in a house that belongs to the family. Unbeknownst to her, the house is already inhabited by the ghost of William, Union soldier, and a ghost cat. Yes, a ghost cat! A car accident murder victim then enlists her help to find who murdered him. Add a lost puppy to the mix and we have a perfect little cozy.

If you enjoy paranormal cozy mysteries then you will love this one. It's well written and so much fun to read. I wish it were longer. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

This book may contain triggers to those who’ve experienced do,Estonian violence. While that happens off page it is a driving force of the main character so be advised.

I liked Clara very much. She’s stronger than she thinks, bright, savvy and kind. I really enjoyed the paranormal aspects. Ghostly sidekicks very cool! This mystery was clever and the resolution unexpected. A quick read, well written and handles an important subject delicately and respectfully. Definitely interested in more from this author and this series!

Clara is trying to hide from her abusive husband. She ends up in Salem with almost no money but manages to break into a building that her husband actually owns. It's been abandoned and is pretty messy. (Abusive husbands seem to be m

It also includes the very polite ghost of a Union soldier.

Now she has to deal with the ghost of a guy killed in a car accident and needs to rescue a dog stuck in a pipe. Then there's also a ghost car.

Then her abusive husband shows up and it's time for a showdown. Joe didn't count on running into ghosts, though. The book has a good ending and it will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

This was such an enjoyable and entertaining

story. My heart hurt for Clara/Emily who was running away from an abusive isolating husband . She runs to Salem and helps solve a murder. She can see ghosts too!!! The adorable family she created for herself in Salem touched my heart. It seems she also found a great green eyed friend to help with her transition. I am anxious for the next book. The ending was very touching. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.

She goes to Salem, Massachusetts to stay in a historic house that belonged to her husband's family. She finds out she's not the only one there. She finds a ghost cat and a ghost of a Union Solider, that is her husband's 4 time grandfather. She helps solve the murder of Beckett. This is a enjoyable and interesting book. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.

This is a fast-paced, fun little cozy mystery!

I adore Clara, a strong-willed character who is finally finding her own voice in life after leaving an abusive marriage. The new friends she makes while hiding out in Salem are warm and inviting, even if only she can see a few of them. The story perfectly introduces us to this little corner kf Salem and the residents and I look foward to getting to know them better!

This was a really good start to a new series, however, I'm not sure I'd call it a cozy mystery. There was definite mystery but also starting life over, trying to get away from an abusive relationship and ghosts. Regardless of what you call it, I really enjoyed the beginning of Clara's "new" life with the paranormal and getting away from the abuse. Lots of background along with the present day situation. I'm very interested in seeing how this series progresses.

I did like the book. The storyline was good and I loved William's character so much. Clara's character… well for starters, I didn't understand the concept of staying in a house owned by your abusive husband after leaving him without word. I know this plays into the plot. Reason for my 4 stars.

The witty banter was entertaining between time periods, some funny moments with ghosts, solving death murder mystery, possible next book series??

I have just found a new series! Dina Marie's new series may be set in Salem, but it seems to be a town full of ghosts instead of witches. She has written a cute cozy with a spunky protagonist determined to live by her own rules with friendly neighbors, a spirited roommate, and a ghost in need of an investigator.

This book starts like a thriller with the protagonist having made an escape from an abusive husband. She takes refuge in an abandoned home that has been in her husbands family for generations, but she discovers that her hideout already has a resident-one who has been there since the civil war. She is shocked to see a ghost, but he is just as shocked that he can be seen. William is absolutely charming and is glad to have some company that he can actually talk with.
She only plans on staying for a few days, but just as she is about to leave, another ghost asks for her help to solve his murder.

For those who are old enough to recall the Ghost and Mrs. Muir, combine that with Ghost Whisperer and Murder She Wrote. There is a polite ghost roommate, a ghost that needs help and a mystery to solve. I read this cute novel in one sitting. It almost received a perfect five stars. My only complaint is the secondary plot with the husband. The author used the controlling husband as a plot device to explain some of the character's actions. However, spousal abuse is a rather serious topic for the cozy mystery genre. My other disappointment was that the novel was so short. I wanted to keep reading! Perhaps if it was longer, the secondary plot line could have received more depth. That plot is resolved in this novel and I can't wait to read more Salem Spirits.

I received an electronic advanced copy of this book, but the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own. I rate this adorable paranormal cozy with four out of five ghosts! 👻👻👻👻

Escaping from an abusive husband is often hard to do. Clara finally managed to escape and made her way to Salem, Massachusetts, to stay in an old house her husband owned while she made plans for her future. What she didn't expect to find eas the ghost of a Union soldier! While trying to stay under the radar, Clara ends up playing sleuth for a 2nd ghost and rescuing a stray puppy! Very endearing characters and an engaging storyline will keep you glued to the pages! I can't wait to see what happens next in the 2nd book of this series!

A delightful romp! Going Ghost is the literary equivalent of comfort food, you can’t wait to settle down and devour it! The story is fun, the mystery intriguing and the setting idyllic. Clara, the protagonist, could be Jessica Fletcher’s modern-day niece. Thanks to her relentless inquisitiveness and magnanimous nature, she comes in contact with a captivating cast of characters, both human and supernatural, in this charming New England caper. Sit down and cozy up with Clara and company. I’m officially hooked on Salem Spirits Cozy Mysteries! When can I order Book 2?

This was a good cozy mystery. With Clara trying to escape a very abusive husband it gave it a much different spin. Clara Kelly is on the run and hiding from her abusive husband. She's staying in a house they own that hasn't been lived in for years. One ghost, two ghost, three ghost, a lost dog, and a murder. So much for staying under the radar.

Salem, ghost hauntings, amateur sleuthing, and more. Excellent books, right around 150 pages or so.
