‘Pooka Power’ is an energetic and humorous adventure book about Celtic mythology and friendship. It tells the story of Ollie, a twelve-year-old Irish boy who finds out he's the only one who can stop the evil pookas from wiping out not only their benevolent rivals, the merrows, but also mankind. When Ollie discovers a fairy fort in his grandfather’s garden, he is transported into a whole new magical world of merrows, pookas and other fairy groups he hadn’t known existed. But his discovery is no accident - the pookas have waged a deadly war against both the other fairies and the mortal world, and to Ollie’s amazement, he is the only person with the power to stop it. With the help of Eevee, a beautiful young merrow, Ollie embarks on a whirlwind expedition through the unique world of the fairies in search of a way to stop the destruction of mankind. ‘Pooka Power’ marries old Celtic fairy mythology with a new world filled with action, adventure and a friendship that crosses worlds, as Ollie’s journey leads him to discover who he really is.
Although this book is for children and young adults, I ended up reading my son's copy and found it to be highly entertaining! The dialogue is snappy and kept the pages turning very easily.
