Warrioress: A Ragoru Romance

Rate this book
As a citadel guardswoman, Uma wears the scars of her past—both those born from her duty that she is proud of and those she would rather forget, including the deepest scars of heartache that haunt her. Yet, while a broken heart can hide behind the icy reserve of her duty, beneath her scarred face lies a tender heart that somehow a triad of Ragoru has worked their way into. Convicted of a crime they say they didn’t intend; Uma suddenly finds herself saddled with the trio pain in the asses. Initially it’s not how she wants to spend Mother’s Night, but when she is stuck with them on the road following the worse of their Withering Nights, she is tempted to enjoy what little comfort she can and all that they offer.

Laro, Vrin, and Kam are a triad of Ragoru down on their luck. The Great Forest is a hard place to find a mate even after the citadels opened to their kind. Nor are those any friendlier to three dull gray males, the lead of which wears physical scars as well as wounds from a lifetime of disappointment. Convicted of poisoning another triad, their luck seems to have sunk even worse when they are put under the charge of a hardened citadel guardswoman. She is infuriating with her claw-sharp tongue, and bitter-poison attitude, yet the longer they are with her the more they become enchanted with the glimpses of the warm female dwelling beneath the surface. One that they determined to claim… if only they can convince each other.

Favorite of the Ragoru series

I will never not drop everything I’m doing to read one of SJ Sander’s Ragoru books. I’m obsessed with this series as I’m sure many are and I was so excited to read this one as I’ve been waiting a long time for it. I know the author stated it took her a while to write this book but gosh can I say I’m happy to announce it was worth the wait.

This is actually my favorite Triad of all, and I was literally in love with the one before it. If you guys can remember Betani and her mates, I was in love with her and her triad but god I was enamored and charmed by Uma’s triad and by Uma herself. I love the varying personalities of her triad, like there wasn’t one Ragaru I liked more than the other. They were so well crafted and they have history and trauma that they have in common with the fmc and your heart breaks for all of them. For the gentle Cam who smiles and makes everyone laugh even though he is in pain, to the big scarred leader who is gentle but protective, to bratty Vrin who is so incredibly multifaceted with his sharp and abrasive but extremely loving and protective—I don’t want to spoil too much but I just blown away. Uma herself is such a thoughtful and imposing figure of a woman, but she’s incredibly kind and lovely and I loved her so much. Her gentle firmness with the men (I liken them to alien werewolves lol) made me fall in love with her with them. I loved this story so much and I want Sander’s to give herself a pat on the back because she did this Warrioress, Justice and gave her the harem she deserved as well as the woman the men deserved.

I wasn’t ready to put this book down but am happy that we will eventually get more Ragoru stories. Meanwhile I’ll just have to satisfy myself by giving this one a reread. Thank you Sanders for the much needed escape.

I really liked Uma and her no-nonsense approach to life. She was assertive but fair and compassionate. Vrin was an interesting character because he carried his trauma with him as antagonism toward pretty much everyone around him. Laro broke my heart because he was such a teddy bear with a gruff demeanor and I just wanted to comfort him. Kam was the levity the story needed - purposefully being silly and an eternal optimist. The story was more character focused than previous ones, but there was still some intrigue and dangerous situations.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: violence, gore, imprisonment, drugging, murder of family members (historical), family estrangement, discussion of physical and emotional abuse, infertility, adoption
references to: poisoning, child abandonment, pregnancy

Im ngl I have swiped past this book multiple times on Kindle because I thought the 3 v 1 action would be a bit too much for me. Especially since they’re werewolf looking. But I have read worse so I finally decided to get over myself & give this book a chance. I was pleasantly suprised! While there were some run on sentences, missing words, grammar errors & over explanations at times, this was a nice lil slow burn. I liked how the characters were written & that there was actual build up to the smut instead of just them BANG-BANGing immediately.

Also can I say the way my heart dropped into my a$$ & I was confused as hell because I thought Laro & Vrin were real brothers & they had did the nasty together… 🫥

DNF 32% Unlikeable FMC

I don’t consider any of this a spoiler as it all occurs in the first 30%.

I was enjoying the premise of the story initially, but less and less as we got into it.
The triad is unjustly imprisoned (expected to be 1-2 weeks), with the intention of forcing them out of the city once the weather is safe (snow storms).

The Captain of the guards suspects they are innocent, but won’t investigate until after they are punished and gone.
Not surprisingly they are unhappy, yet still cooperate, despite easily being able to escape or overpower her.
Yet still they are treated like dangerous criminals.

We read about needing to be cautious, about locking them up in a cell way too small each night, for protection … all while knowing they could simply remove the bars, no key required.

She’s indignant they aren’t more greatful for the small favours she does them, as others wouldn’t (how doing the least amount is a kindness, just because others are worse…is something to be greatful for?).

She is a captain, in charge of others.
Yet while isolated with them by the storms, she poisons the food of one, to teach him a lesson (causing sever diarrhoea).

They are in prison, dependant upon her, following all orders, except for occasionally speaking in their own language, against her insistence they only use her language).

The male was being an ass, and in part blaming her unfairly.
However, considering his circumstances…?

She can go off to her own room for privacy any time she wants, has books, work, and plenty of space to move about.

She knows why they are angry and frustrated. She doesn’t explain what her issues are, or why she’s so untrusting, simply expects them to behave and get over their own feelings (despite her not doing the same).

She is in a position of authority and trust.

I don’t like her!
I reached ‘too much’, when after being told the male will seek retribution, part as anger, part as amusement, and she thought ‘how juvenile’. 😳😵‍💫

This was too annoying and too immature for characters you would expect so much more from. (She is meant to be an experience guard, a person of honour, while the triad is given the impression of age and competence, though scarred and angry). The immaturity doesn’t fit, and isn’t enjoyable to read.

I will most likely try again another time, but for now, will consider this a sad addition to an otherwise awesome series, that has had only one other misstep.

Nice addition to the Ragoru timeline

I really enjoy all of Sanders books, of which I have read many, but this is only getting four stars from me because it (like several of her recent releases) needs a touch more editing. The edits needed are all easy things that seem to be either talk-to-text mishaps or accidents formed from previous edits, but they distracted from the story. The plot and characters were lovely, and I greatly enjoyed this addition to the Ragoru universe. If I happen to do a reread later and see the highlighted issues have been dealt with, I will gladly bump this review up to five stars, but this book is worth reading as is.

Highly Anticipated and Worth the Wait

Yes!! First, we’ve been waiting for this book to be written and it was sooo worth it. Warrioress, has a strong, scarred, POC FMC. Tragic backstory, lots of responsibility. She has to take a triad of Ragoru to jail and the antics continue from there. This was so slow burn, as the triad had some emotional hurdles to tackle themselves, but it was definitely worth the hype. Nice and spicy🌶🌶🌶🌶as the books in this world are….fingers crossed we get more Ragoru.

4&1\2 fabulous🌟's for Warrioress

I absolutely love the Ragoru romance series it always seems that each book just improves on the one before. In this story Uma is one of the Citadel's captain of guards. She's had a hard life with many tragedies that she has learned to over come. She is highly skilled and respected but doesn't believe love and a mate are in her future. That is until she gets a call to come and detain a Ragoru triad. When she gets there she encounters Kam, Vrin and Laro. This triad has come to the Citadel desperately searching for A mate to call their own. Each has been horribly wounded by past tragedies and find trust hard to come by. But when the Captain of the guard detains them they find their interest in her sky rockets. I don't want to go into too much detail or it will give the plot of the story away, but watching this relationship unfold was an emotionally beautiful journey. Where the triad and Uma learn to trust each other with secrets not told to anyone else and allows them to fight the true enemy. The huntsmen! Just when you think their gone they come back meaner and more brutal than ever! I can't wait to read more books in this series!! Highly recommend🔥💖💖🔥💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟🔥

I love the ragoru books and SJ Sanders is an amazing author when it comes to world building.

Overall I enjoyed this book except for the unexpected MM action. I enjoy MM books- but when I'm reading RH I want all the attention on the FMC and a warning would have been nice. I also didn't care for the fact that the MMC needed that pain to get off- not my kink and don't like it unexpectedly coming up.
Another thing that lessened my enjoyment was the transition from like to love seemed super fast and rather jarring. We went from 'okay, let's get down I'm curious about your junk' to 'my mates' in a blink near the end of the book- the pacing of that felt off and forced.

will I read the next Ragoru bo0k? Absolutely.

Stars: 5 Stars
Format: Digital
Series: Ragoru Romance Book 2
Steam Level: Steamy

CWs: violence, gore, abuse (past), death of family members (past)

I have read most of the Ragoru books and for this little bit of it, it seems like you only need to read Red and A Mother’s Night Gift to understand what’s going on.

Quick Thoughts:
- Finally! This story is explicitly MMFM where the others are not. I always felt there should be some of that dynamic in this series
- To that end (hehe), the sex scenes are smoking hot
- This takes place right after the lead of Betani’s triad gets poisoned then continues on past the point that she and her family leave
- This book does need another pass through to catch small mistakes but it didn’t diminish my enjoyment of the book
- Learning all of these protagonist’s back stories made me want to wrap them in fluffy blankets and feed them hot cocoa
- Loved the two other guardswomen we meet in the story. There obviously will be books for them and I can’t wait for it
- I normally don’t like it when one of the people in a Why Choose story is an ahole (I’ve DNF’d books for it) but Vrin doesn’t cross that line into unbearable or unlikable and is actually a fun character
- Uma is a badass
- There are two people who die in this that I cheered for when it happened
- Something that I love in this book is how Uma treats/cares for all three of the Ragoru the same and very deeply, but interacts with each one differently based on their character
- While A Mother’s Night Gift is basically a Stand Alone, this one is obviously the kick off to more stories going forward with an over arching storyline but it feels like a complete story and not a cliff hanger. I’m so excited

Overall I really enjoyed this book. In fact, this whole universe is a lot of fun with great world building. I love that there are prequels to Red where you get more backstory to how this universe formed and continuation stories set after Red. Definitely worth reading all these books

I wanted to pick this up when I saw that the heroine is BIPOC, older and has physical scars.

TW: domestic abuse

The world building was interesting as the Citadel is a stronghold for humans and the guards are female. They have recently been welcoming Ragoru (four armed and four eyed huge wolves) after the disbanding of the Order of the Hunstmen.

Uma is the captain of the lower district and becomes involves when a fight at a tavern with Ragoru and humans. She separates the Triad of Laro, Vrin and Kam while the guards investigate what has happened. She starts to care for the welfare of the wolves and does nice things for them such as give them space to move around and brought them sweet treats.

The triad are trying to recover for an abusive experience with a female ragoru and think they want a mate who is docile and quiet but upon meeting Uma, they starts to change their mind as she is able to go head to head with Vrin who can be scary and lash out whilst speaking quietly with Laro, their alpha and joking with Kam.

I love heroes who want to take care of and spoil their heroine.

I didn't like the typos and grammar errors. The sentence structure of some of the writing was strange.

Tropes: why choose, hurt comfort, m/m, found family

Typos were noticeable.

Not my favorite of this series, but still ok. I was worried they were going to get into those terrible tropes like “only 1 bed - oh no” or “mating lust made me do it - let’s make the best of it.” But she deviated from them (yay!) - presumably on purpose since the scenes were written in such a way that you could say they were tailored for those tropes.

I didn’t like the food poisoning- it’s a small power play when you’re already the one in power and doesn’t play well for portraying the “upright” individual the character is supposed to be. I also didn’t find how they got out of the last issue believable with 200ish huntsmen … and the drug had some very specific behaviors that seem too specific to be elicited by drugging without also suggestion.

I’ll be reading the next book, which I assume is coming based on the disappearance of some secondary characters at the end. Hopefully it will be as good as previous books in this series.

This book was really strange, and at times awkward, but still good? Well-written, detailed with great pacing without being too slow or rushed. It definitely was unusual and the way these wolfmen looked was off-putting so I just rewrote their appearances in my head because otherwise it's too much! But actually interesting story with strong characterization. And although the FMC Woman of Color is (literally) strong and tough, she is written with such humanity and vulnerability, intellect, gentleness and understanding that it is quite balanced.

One hang-up that bothered me with the men being imprisoned is did they just give them no entertainment will in the cell? Really, even prisoners get a set of cards? They do get allowed to stretch out their legs but still they are in the cells for hours.

If this kind of book if your thing, you should enjoy it.

3.75 stars for me. I really love this alien species and everything about their customs. I enjoyed the background about the abusive female and how the males came out with a happy ending. The plotline of this book is simple, but it works well. The problem is that there are significant errors in at least half of this author's work, including throughout this entire book. Just simple errors that could be fixed and make the quality of work better. She needs an editor and if she has one, she needs a new one.

Ragoru Tale of Pain and Joy

I actually loved this book. I only gave it 4 stars because of the bad grammar and spelling.
Please can't you authors find someone to edit your books that actually speaks English and knows how to structure a sentence? It is so difficult to read books that are not edited correctly. You would not get so many criticism of your books. MS Sanders I love your story lines in all of your books and look forward to more of them.

Great to get Uma’s story

She is the Black guard with the scared face that was in RED. This runs concurrent with Mother’s Night that she was just in also. She meets a triad that has an Alpha with a scared face too. When she has to guard them both sides are weary of the other.

There are lots of fun scenes and of course lots of adult time! The last few chapters tease the next books. I can’t wait.

So exciting!
I’m thrilled to be back in the world of the Ragoru! I really enjoyed Uma - she’s strong, smart, honest, cares about others, and her scars helped make her the person she is. It’s delightful to see how Laro, Vrin, and Kam react to her in the beginning and how it slowly changes. Their journey is a fine adventure of exploration, danger, and deepening love. I love every step of the way!

Delightful tale with grammar issues

I love SJ Sanders's storytelling techniques and plot development. Warrioress warms my heart since so many of us have scars we try to hide when really they are tattoos of strength and resilience to be proudly displayed. My only struggle is with the numerous and distracting grammatical issues throughout each chapter.

Well written story

Ok I loved this book and yes I’m a sucker for strong FMC ‘s that take nothing . I love how the triad took their time with her and how she grew to love them too. This is a very well written story and FYI the spice doesn’t happen until t close to the end of the book. You will love the story

First half is slow, second half is good.

It bothers me that the timeline in this book doesn’t match the timeline in “A Mothers Night Gift”. That book sounds like 3-4 days and this one has them in the jail for weeks?

That plus the slow pace I struggled to get through gives it only 4 stars from me. My least favorite of all the Ragoru books.

Okay addition to the series however it is chock full of grammatical errors and missing words, so much so that I think it affected my enjoyment of the book.

I hope the author continues the series with the triad mentioned at the end, who was trying to get their rog back.
