Cute high school to college romance featuring a pair of childhood friends. The story is about as generic as you can get, but I enjoyed reading how the FL and ML interact with each other in their bickering ways. The FL sees a different, more childish and petulant side to the ML that very few other people see, and especially not their classmates.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
The FL is Lin Zhexia and the ML is Chi Yao. They grew up as next door neighbors, and as Chi Yao's parents were mostly away for work, he spent a large part of his childhood hanging out with Lin Zhexia and her family. When he was younger, he was sickly and constantly in the hospital, so the FL took it upon herself to be his protector from other neighborhood bullies.
Fast forward 9 years and they're about to start together at the same high school. Even though the ML treats everyone else coldly and rudely rejects any girl who tries to get close to him (he literally told a girl he was allergic to her water when she tried to hand it to him during a basketball game lol), he always goes out of the way to help the FL. He talks to her sarcastically, but at the end of the day, actions speak louder than words and there's not a single case where he doesn't end up helping her.
There were plenty of sweet moments, whether it's with homework help or when he accompanies her to get her ears pierced because she's afraid of the pain. I also thought it was cute how he can always tell when her mood isn't right and shows up at the right time to be there for her, like when she's scared of the thunder at home alone or she's upset because she found out about her mom being pregnant.
It's pretty obvious to the reader that Chi Yao treats Lin Zhexia differently than anyone else, but of course the FL is completely oblivious to this. At the same time, she slowly discovers her changing feelings for the ML but doesn't want to ruin their friendship by saying anything, so she doesn't confess and the ML ends up moving away due to his family's circumstances.
Finally they're reunited in college, and the time that they spent apart has made the ML realize that he's not content with their current status as just friends, so he aggressively pursues her and makes her realize his feelings. Then all the cute fluffy romance starts!
Like I said, the story is pretty generic. I was honestly a bit bored at times because of the formulaic story, but I kept going because the interactions between the FL and ML are cute and I knew it's a short story. The author does a good job of capturing all the emotions that come with a budding crush and also the insecurities of being in your first relationship.
Here are some excerpts from the story that stood out to me:
"Let me ask you," Chen Lin said, "How does it feel growing up facing such a face?"
She wanted to say, "If it were me, I would wake up from my dreams laughing."
But Lin Zhexia thought for a moment and answered earnestly, "...My hand itches."
Chen Lin, "?"
Lin Zhexia, "It's just that a lot of the time, it's that feeling where I want to give him a beating, but I can't overpower him."
----------------
their interactions crack me up sometimes
Lin Zhexia caught that moment to capture a breath, she broke the atmosphere and said, "You... have you really not secretly learned this before?"
Chi Yao raised his eyebrows unintelligibly, as if to ask why he would secretly learn this.
Lin Zhexia said slowly, "Because you want to show off your awesome scarf knitting skills in front of me and enjoy crushing me."
After hearing her words, Chi Yao was silent for two seconds.
Then he said, "I did learn before."
"I have been knitting scarves in a textile factory since I was one year old."
"From the age of three, I was able to knit fifty scarves a day and became an excellent employee in the factory."
"What do you think about this answer?" Chi Yao said. "If you're not satisfied, I'll change it.
----------------
Awww Chi Yao is touched when the FL spontaneously travels to where the physics olympiad is being held to support him, and she's the only one who tells him it's okay not to win
Always deemed “not capable,” he became especially strong, wrapping himself up, refusing to lower his head or show weakness, appearing invincible until everyone began to assume “you’ll definitely be fine.”
Until he was seventeen, seemingly no one had ever told him, “It’s okay if you’re not.”
And even if you’re not, you’re still the best.
But at the train station, when Lin Zhe Xia unexpectedly appeared, that string seemed to loosen.
And now, it felt like someone had gently touched it.
A very light touch, but it completely relaxed.
Chi Yao felt his throat a bit dry.
Some difficult, unspoken words gradually welled up uncontrollably from deep within.
But between him and Lin Zhe Xia, there was no need for so many words. Some things seemed to pass silently between them.
----------------
the reason why the ML didn't want to easily confess to the FL is because she's too important to him
He Yang sat up, ready to dive deeper into the topic. “Why didn’t they confess their feelings to each other? Why didn’t they say it? If just one of them had spoken up, this whole thing could’ve been resolved ages ago. Why wait ten years? It’s weird. I don’t get it.”
Lost in thought, He Yang suddenly heard the person leaning against the kitchen doorway murmur in a low, almost self-reflective voice, “… Because it’s too important.”
Because this person held such a special, irreplaceable place in his life.
More important than “like,” more significant than love.
That’s why he treaded so carefully.
That’s why he couldn’t speak up, couldn’t let it slip.
----------------
he planned such a special way to celebrate her 18th birthday, so cute~
As Chi Yao led her into it, the darkness was dispelled by countless points of glowing light. The entire “forest” suddenly lit up, filled with thousands of fireflies hovering low in the air.
It was like a sea formed by fireflies.
A grand sea of fireflies on a midsummer night.
Lin Zhexia felt as though she were amidst a starry sky, the whole world illuminated at this moment.
In this “sea of stars,” Chi Yao’s voice softened as he said to her, “Happy Birthday.”
Lin Zhexia felt that Chi Yao had spent the entire day collecting all the beauties of summer for her.
----------------
Noticing her absent-mindedness, Chi Yao asked, “What’s wrong?”
Lin Zhexia couldn’t help but ask, “Why are you suddenly being so nice to me?”
Chi Yao responded lightly, “Was I ever not nice to you?”
She couldn’t refute that statement.
Because when she thought about it carefully, even though Chi Yao’s words were often harsh, he had always been one of the best people to her outside of family.
But she couldn’t exactly say, “Why aren’t you as sharp-tongued as before?”
That would make her seem like she actually enjoyed being scolded by him every day. It sounded kind of twisted.
----------------
They had known each other for too long, experienced too much together.
For him, liking her wasn’t something sudden.
It was a gradual accumulation over years of small moments.
When he realized it, he thought it was just a passing breeze—but it turned out to be part of a massive flood.
Falling for Lin Zhe Xia happened naturally, as natural as eating and drinking every day.
His life seemed to have been programmed with something called “Lin Zhe Xia.” Once he understood what “liking” meant, he could only like her.
