TWIN TEXT -- Nightsong/Ari Berk/2012

Twin Text Rationale: This is a story that highlights the majestic and beautiful quality of bats in beautiful prose as we learn a bit about how bats live and eat and see with a young bat learning about himself and the world too. By incorporating facts though not being ostentatious in its presentation, students don’t realize immediately the parting of facts and details through prose.

Text Structure of NF Book: Description

Strategy Application: After reading Nightsong, students will be instructed to fill in a RAN or KWL chart (depending on age group). Then students will read or listen to nonfiction text on bats and complete the chart, and in small groups share parts of their charts with each other. For older students or as a continuation of the learning, students may be directed to formulate a question about something they would like to know more about (whether about bats or about something talked about in the text).
