After Being Abducted by the General [被将军掳走之后]

Rate this book
Yuan Li was an excellent logistics personnel on the battlefield. One day, after transmigrating, he found himself in ancient times as the son of a minor official. With tears in his parents eyes, they sent him to Chu Wang Mansion to marry to drive away the evil spirits for the ailing young master of the Chu family.

On that day, Chu Hechao, the second son of the Chu Wang Mansion, returned hurriedly from the battlefield, still wearing his armour. Without even taking it off, he performed the ceremonial rites on behalf of his brother and paid respects to the heavens and earth alongside Yuan Li.

Yuan Li caught a whiff of the scent of blood and dust on Chu Hechao’s body, and his heart skipped a beat. He understood that this was a dangerous individual.

That night, Chu Hechao drank a cup of ceremonial wine with Yuan Li on behalf of his brother.

Yuan Li smiled gently and said, “General, please.”

As he held the wine cup, his fingers were as slender as jade, and his handsome face was adorned with long, fluttering eyelashes. Chu Hechao stared at him for a while, his expression a smile but not a smile, before raising his hand and downing the wine in one gulp.

Half a month later, the young master of the Chu Wang Mansion passed away, and Chu Hechao abducted Yuan Li, taking him on a horse and heading straight for the frontier.

Yuan Li continued to exert his efforts on the ancient battlefield.

He cultivated crops, raised cattle and sheep, cleared roads, and established medical facilities. Busy day in and day out, he fed the mighty army and comforted the wounded soldiers, turning the military camp into a better place. The generals treated him as if they were meeting their parents who provided them with food and clothing.

The only man who had brought him here wore a perpetual scowl, suppressing his anger. “I am the one you married, the one who drank the ceremonial wine with you, and also the one who shared the wedding chamber with you. Shouldn’t you be looking at me?”

This novel was just my jam okay: transmigration, farming, clever couple, doting love interests and really good world-building.
I was so looking forward to what would happen next in the story.

Chu Hechao on reddit:
Me (25M) is in love with my brother's wife who is man (17M). My brother's wife is really beautiful, strong, brave and amazing. My brother is sadly still alive and I don't know what to do. I think his wife has feelings for him but i'm not sure. I hate my brother tbh. Any tips what to do?

Edit:
Just to be clear - my brother is older than me and when the wedding took place I was on his behalf. so I actually married his wife. I hated my older brother since young age.
Thank you for your replies. I decided not to listen to the advice of any of you and kissed my brother's wife.
Fortunately my brother died and it turns out his wife likes me! Unfortunately we can't have sex because we just started three years of mourning. I'm in love with him and I'm planning to tell my parents about us.

Edit 2:
I'm calling him my wife and he is calling me "his boyfriend". I have no idea what it means. But he cooks me amazing meals, takes care of my army and is willing to share his pants. I couldn't be more happier. We told our friends that we are together. They all have mixed feelings. My best friend tried to force us to break up - luckily it didn't work out for him and we are still together. Should we keep it secret from the rest?

Edit3:
I learn how to cook for him and I'm trying my best to dote on him. He is love of my life. Wish us good luck! I have just really bad feeling about something.

DNF ch 13/196

This was a bit TOO slice of life for my taste. It was just really slow and I had no interest in the characters.

A solid empire building novel. From some of the reviews on NU, I had a good idea of what I was getting into, but it was still an engaging read.

The story follows our protagonist, a transmigrator from modern times called Yuan Li. He's born into a family with humble origins and marries into the Chu family to try and increase the luck for their sickly firstborn son, Chu Mingfeng. The groom is already on his deathbed when the "marriage" takes place, so his brother and our ML, Chu Hechao, substitutes in for his brother and goes through the marriage actions instead.

On top of the transmigration, Yuan Li has a system in his head that provides him with various rewards once certain tasks are completed. For example, one of his first tasks is to get get his hands on bribe money meant for an eunuch superintendent, and the reward for that is a series of books about postnatal care for sows. Other rewards include the refinement methods for fine salt and sugar, cotton, potatoes, one week's worth of weather knowledge, etc. All things that can drastically improve quality of life and make the MC rich.

After some initial hiccups, Yuan Li and Chu Hechao work well together. Chu Hechao has the soldiers and the military experience, and Yuan Li has the logistics experience and can bring a lot of money and grains to the table, so together they make a pretty strong team. It just took a while for Yuan Li to make Chu Hechao realize his value and treat him as an equal rather than a subordinate. I really liked their relationship as you can see it evolving from an initially antagonistic relationship to a professional working relationship to actual romance, and the agony that the ML goes through when he realizes that he's fallen for his "sister-in-law".

I generally don't enjoy reading books with too much wars and military fighting, but it was surprisingly manageable here. The author never stays too long on one topic or issue, since there are so many elements of building an empire that the main characters have to deal with, so even the battles against foreign nomadic tribes like the Xiongnu formed only a small component of the overall story.

There was a lot of strategic planning, as the main characters have their strategists carry out various plans to 1) train their own troops, and 2) strengthen their foundation, and 3) work against the other leaders. For example, one of Yuan Li's earliest projects is to create an empire-wide intelligence network using orphans. It takes time, but you can really see the fruit of his labor come in handy later in the story, when he relies heavily on his intelligence network to figure out what his enemies are up to.

The story spans a period of 10 years, but it never felt like it was moving too quickly or slowly. The pacing was just right, and I was always engaged in the story. One of my favorite moments was when Yuan Li realizes that having some power wasn't just enough. His goal is to improve the lives of the common people, and sadly most of the people in charge, from the emperor to the provincial governors to the noble families, don't really care about them. The moment where he realizes this and decides to go for the seat of emperor is very powerful:

Yuan Li raised his head to look at the sky.

The flames in his eyes flickered and swayed, vigorously burning in the wind until they blazed fiercely.

A thought that had appeared deep in his heart long ago resurfaced, this time clearer than ever before.

The emperor couldn’t do it, nor could the other feudal lords.

Chu Mingfeng couldn’t do it.

Chen Wang couldn’t do it either.

But I can do it.

I, who went from being the son of a county official to becoming the governor of two provinces, made Youzhou a paradise in this chaotic world.

Only I can do it.

If I can…

If I can have more power.

If I can lead a rebel army.

If I can have a say.

If, if I can…

If I can become the emperor.

…Can I become the emperor?

I can become the emperor.

Not everything was perfect with the story though, which is why I didn't give full stars. One problem I had is that the system or transmigration is never explained. We're just told that the MC transmigrated into the Yuan family as a baby and grew up retaining all of his memories and that's it. Also, the system reward of the AR video was super random, especially when the dragon and phoenix came out during his coronation ceremony. You could tell the author was feeling lazy about certain things and just used the system to explain away everything that they didn't want to come up with an explanation for, like how the MC knows how to make sugar and salt.
