I just found out I'm doomed to die before my twenty-first birthday. Must be a Tuesday...
My luck has been in the toilet for years, since the night I lost my virginity to a dangerously sexy cat shifter and was turned into an owl, all in one fell swoop. Now, the sorceress who cursed me threatens to destroy my pack—and the city of New York—and I'm the only one who can stop her.
Well, me, and the arrogant cat shifter who got me into this mess in the first place, the one who claims to be my fated mate… But Axe isn't my mate. He's my mate's older brother.
Jacob was the boy who was meant for me, and I refuse to dishonor his memory. He may be gone, but he's still the only boy I'll ever love. I'll work with Axe to save ourselves and the world as we know it, but that's it.
I won't sleep with him—no matter how my heart races when he touches me—and I sure as hell won't fall in love.
But that promise gets harder to keep as Axe proves he’s more than an alpha with an attitude. He’s brave and smart, and willing to do whatever it takes to make me his.
This damaged man is soon so deep under my skin, I can’t imagine a future without him. But is our newfound love enough to break the curse woven into our stars?
Lost Queen is a Standalone novel set in the greater Wolves of New York universe. It can be read alone, but is better when enjoyed after the Wolves of New York and Lost Moon University series.
The author (Bella Jacobs who also writes under the pen name Lilli Valente) states at the start of this story that she's done her best to make it readable as a standalone but readers who haven't read the earlier books in the series may find it difficult to keep up with. Honestly, I read the earlier books and perhaps its just my poor memory, but there were times I had trouble keeping up with the plot. Mostly involving the timeline with this story in relation to the earlier books. Still as paranormal fantasies go it had a lot to offer in regards to magic, romance, sex and our main protagonists Axe and Diane trying to kill Eloise, the powerful and evil witch who turned Diane into an owl for having sex with Axe her familiar before the curse can kill her. For comic relief there are two crows Shits and Giggles who along with Axe escaped the clutches of Eloise along with Axe. Also a horny French bi-sexual vampire who helps them along the way. Axe stupidly keeps secrets from Diane. Like the fact that they are true mates. Or that his brother Jacob, her former boyfriend is not dead as he lets her believe, but trapped in another dimension. As these secrets are slowly revealed to Diane, they threaten to destroy the relationship they had been building. Not to worry though everyone but Eloise gets a happy ending. Although I thought the author could have done more to provide the same for Jacob.
I loved, loved this forbidden, fated mates romance with a side of curses by an evil witch. The story has a great balance of exhilarating action, palpable tension, unexpected twists, thrilling danger, and red-hot romance. Dianna is a wolf shifter who spent two years trapped as an owl. Axe is a cat shifter who was cursed by Eloise, an evil power hungry witch. Two years ago Dianna and Axe shared a spicy night because a different evil witch was culling virgins and Dianna wanted to fix that issue. Unfortunately, Dianna and Axe are fated mates and after their night together, Axe’s curse is what turned Diana into an owl. Axe has finally released Dianna from the owl form but a two week clock is ticking and either Diana or the evil witch must die. Once they agree to work together despite the betrayal issues and the forbidden nature of their relationship, thus begins their roller coaster ride toward their HEA with secrets, danger, intrigue, and plot twists as Dianna and Axe try to stay safe, learn all the magic and unpack some baggage. The story included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and a captivating storyline plus the best pair of crow helpers. I am so happy to finally read Dianna’s story. 4.5 stars.
**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**
Although this book can be read as a stand alone, I recommend reading the Wolves of New York and the Lost Moon University series for the background on how Diana has ended up as she is.
Diana, is finally back in her human body and being chased by wolves when she is helped by a mumma bear and two crows. That is when Axe turns up and let her know that they have two weeks to kill the witch that he is a familiar too, or she dies.
Axe and Diana are fated mates and although they have not seen each other for two years, the heat between them is still there, especially as they are currently running towards potential death and a time limit.
You really feel the chemistry with this pair and the Crows, Shits and Giggles are a great pair that add in some great comedy to the story.
This is certainly a story that I'm sure many of us have been waiting for and it did not disappoint!
Diana and Axe’s story was paranormal romance at its best. All the words were steeped in meaning and emotion and told with a satisfying punch. Humour, romance, emotion, anger, joy – I could feel the words as I gobbled up each word, sentence and paragraph. I know, a bit gushy, but seriously, it was sooo good…
From the opening paragraph, the lump jumped in my throat and never really left. After so long, Diana was free, but not really. Axe was going to have no more secrets, sort of. And the wedge between them was gone. Well, soon. Ish. The seemingly cursed couple were running away from (and to) something, fearing for their lives and being dogged at every step. Not catching a break, they had to rely on each other even though they were fighting. Angry words and tempers flared but acceptance and love also followed them…
This was such a fun paranormal romance, I love the type of magic used, especially adding in chemistry and how their powers balance off each other, between Diana and Axe, this book was fully of sparks, sometimes literally.
The talking birds were hilarious and I loved the commentary they added was perfect timing, and added a lot of balance to the entire story, as the magical storyline was heavy with grief and loss.
Fated mates is a favorite of mine in paranormal romance tropes, and it adds so much to the story emotionally when one is in love with another, before they find out their mates. I loved how this story line played out, and can’t wait to see what’s next from Bella Jacobs!
I was very much looking forward to this book, to see how Diana would be freed from her owl existence. I enjoyed the relationship between Axe and Diana, the crows were hilarious, Jean Luc was a fun addition. I was disappointed in how quickly the resolution of the plot was covered. I expected there to be more of a fight. Overall it is still worth reading as part of the series.
Lost Queen is a story we have all been waiting for. It can be read as a standalone but to fully be immersed in Diana’s story then I recommend reading the Wolves of New York and the Lost Moon University series’.
Two years ago, Diana had one life-alternating night. It was the night she met, Axe, her mate’s older brother. It was also the night she was changed into an owl. A beautiful, smart owl but an owl all the same. She could no longer speak to her family. She couldn’t hold her nephew.
And where did Axe go? He dipped that night and now, he was back and she was a shifter once again. He was there to fight this time instead of running. They didn’t have much time. Diana had to kill the witch who put the spell on her within two weeks or she would be gone forever.
Axe had his secrets. To protect Diana. It was always about her. He felt it the night they met. He was her fated mate. She didn’t believe it but he could feel that she knew it. Down deep. She also wanted him deeply but she would not do that to Jacob even if he was gone. Will their time together in this fight show her what is truly real?
Have been waiting for this story, and it was worth the wait. Diana is a true badass. Axe is even more than I expected. I also started falling for another character and hoping that maybe one day, we will get his story…
