Jacob Karnes’ book, Master Your First Job: The Remarkable Path From First Day to First Promotion, offers a comprehensive roadmap for students entering the workforce for the first time. The book provides practical advice on navigating the early stages of a career, from establishing a strong first impression to progressing toward the first promotion. It’s a valuable resource, not only for students entering the job market but also for educators teaching critical workplace skills.

In a high school 21st Century Skills course, Master Your First Job serves as an excellent resource for introducing students to the expectations and strategies necessary for professional success. The book’s real-world application makes it highly relevant to students preparing to enter internships, part-time jobs, or full-time positions after graduation.

Master Your First Job is practical, timely, and a great place to start for those beginning their careers. It can be so overwhelming to know how to succeed as a new employee and how to move toward your goals, and the author does a great job of speaking to that and giving next steps, both personally and professionally. I loved the portion of the book about building a personal brand. This is a must read!
