J.P. Jackson

J.P. Jackson is an award winning author of dark urban fantasy, paranormal, and even paranormal romance stories, but regardless of the genre they always feature LGBTQ+ main characters.

J.P. works as an IT analyst in health care during the day, where if cornered he’d confess to casting spells to ensure clinicians actually use the electronic medical charting system he configures and implements.

At night, the writing happens, where demons, witches and shape shifters congregate around the kitchen table and general chaos ensues. His husband of 22 years has very firmly put his foot down on any further wraith summonings and regularly lines the doorway with iron shavings and salt crystals. Imps are most definitely not house-trainable. Ghosts appear at the most inopportune times, and the Fae are known for regular visits where a glass of wine is exchanged for a good ole story or two. Although the husband doesn’t know it, Canela and Jalisco, the two Chihuahuas, are in cahoots with the spell casting.

J.P.’s other hobbies include hybridizing African Violets (thanks to grandma), extensive travelling and believe it or not, knitting.

👉👏 The world created for this story is really well-built, and so are the characters. I loved them all, but Sam (sweetest and strong) and the Auntie Lavinia conquered my heart.
👉 The story is set in a small town called Camrose. I felt so connected to it.
It was full of action, and the plot twist the author introduced was both perfect and unexpected.
I also loved the witch's cottage… it was absolutely chef's kiss.

👉❤️‍🔥 I loved the heartfelt talks Jay and Cade had with Sam, as well as the sincerity and kindness they showed him. I loved these three so much.

▪︎FAV QUOTES▪︎

■ "Jay: “Wow, I love you.” Cade furrowed his brows at me. “I’ve never had anyone condense my occultist job into such a positive, heart-warming spin. I think you’re my new best friend.” He chuckled.
I smiled, somewhat sheepishly..."
☺️

■ "Cade : "Sam, I’m so sorry. I’m gonna help make this right. Okay?”
Sam glanced up at me with his big brown eyes, tears welling up and over, spilling across his cheeks. He sniffled, then ran a hand across his face to wipe the wetness away.
He gave me a stiff nod.
“It’s okay to be scared. To be honest, I’m scared a lot these days too. But together, with your dad, we’ll figure out what’s going on and stop them from being so nasty.”
“Thanks, Cade. I knew you’d come.”"
🤧 I'm very emotional.

■ "Cade: The look on Jay’s face destroyed me. It’s odd how quickly we can make connections with people. Deep connections. I hadn’t known him a week yet, but—"

I liked this a lot! The plot was interesting and the writing concise. Insta love/lust between Jay (the smooth bodied gym rat realtor) and Cade (the wooly bear psychic) but that was really well done.

I enjoyed the arc of Jay’s son needing to become a reaper though I feel like Jay let his ex off the hook too easily. The only reason his son needed to become a reaper was that she refused and pushed it onto her son.

The steam was great and lacked the over flowery word usage present in so many books. It was refreshing.

Tropes and CW:

Paranormal
Mild to medium gore
M/M explicit sexual content
Instalust
No breakup
No cheating
No OM or OW drama

Medium Rare is part of the multi author series Haunted Hearts. This series is consists of 10 stories about the paranormal, and men who find love with a guaranteed HEA.

Cade come form a long line of individuals with the gift to see the dead, as the only member in his generation with the gift it his duty to help others in need, however after his most recent encounter with an angry ghost that left him shaken up the decides that he needs to take break from the dead. His solution is to find a nice home in a small town that hopefully is less crowded by the ghost population. Jay is a real estate who is on a mission to find Cade a home that meets his needs despite not believing in the paranormal himself. However, he is for the shock of a lifetime when he is faced with the very real possibility that his son might have a gift of sight after he begins to experience violent haunting by what he thought was his sons imaginary friend. The ghosts are angry, and they seem to be holding Jay’s son responsible, Jay and Cade begin to work double time to understand why the ghosts have become so violent, and what Jay’s son has to do with it, and of they happen to steal some “adult fun time” who could possibly blame them?

This is the second book by J.P Jackson that I have had the pleasure of reading and I can say that I was not dissapointed. I loved the relationship between Cade and Jay and how easily they do connect with one another. J.P Jackson touches on the importance of family, and I enjoyed Sam was a priority and not an afterthought to the relationship between the men. The dynamic between the characters was wonderful, Jay who is not afraid to feel his emotions and despite his fears does what he need to do to keep his son safe, it is a wonderful depiction of how you can be brave despite your fear.

This story line of this book has a definite conclusion, but it is open ended for maybe a possible second book? I know for a fact that of there is a second book I would read it with a quickness.

Ya know, I’m really starting to think reality has an unknown problem with me reading. Or, alternately, just a huge issue with me peacefully existing at all (if this past week is anything to go by).

It took me entirely too long to get to the end of this book, but I made it, and after being scared I’d wind up being the mean-ass again, I’m happy to say that this time I thoroughly enjoyed my time in this author’s brain space. I wish I could’ve devoured it quicker, but between the toothache from hell and now (maybe) Covid, two days was the best I could do.

What? He can fucking read, clearly. I’m sure he already dislikes me, same as everyone else. I’m not hiding my shit. I meant what I said after the other book, and I mean what I’m saying now. Maybe I’ll redeem myself, who knows?

This was the most bro-coded romance I’ve ever read, and I was here for it. Sometimes the dialogue got weird/felt a little off/formal, but for the most part, I have NO question who the intended audience was, as it should be. This one is For The Boys, and it was fucking awesome. More of this in the genre, thanks. I had those just my friends talking about their lives vibes high-key the entire time. That’s always the good stuff, buddies.

The twisting and turning and set-up for more books (LOUD HINTING WITH MY GRABBY HANDS—unless I’m dumb and there’s already more, but we don’t judge the smoothness of my brain because we are nice) was fantastic, the story and the characters were great and had depth/detail, and even the parts where I was like but I want more were done well and didn’t leave me lacking anything, I just would’ve had fun with a deeper dive. Word/page count needs must, though, or whatever. Idk. I just really liked the whole thing.

Something I don’t ever mention but that I also loved about this one was that I could read little parts here and there to Nigel and he was interested and enjoyed himself. That’s rare, because his favourite book is the damn Necronomicon, and he doesn’t even read any of those anymore. I can usually get away with Finn Dixon or S. Manship, but that’s the extent of things.

Before it even gets said, don’t say it. He sits beside me and reads over my shoulder sometimes because I whine that he doesn’t care about my interests like I pretend to care about his, and he likes to feel included. He’s needy and spreads germs, those are his qualifications. I swear nothing untoward or shady is going on.

4.5/5. I am (still) way too immature for the word “butt” in a spicy scene, though, and tbh I could be embarrassed or ashamed of that fact but I’m not. Blame whatever you want, but ima giggle every damn time. For at least two minutes. Apparently I’ll die good with that. Anyway, I loved this, I had a good time for a long(er than typical) time, and I’m off to spend more time in places that can’t give me (maybe) Covid or make a toothache worse. This series hasn’t had a flop yet.

Medium Rare by J.P. Jackson is part of the multi author series Haunted Hearts. Cade Ivanov is struggling with his inherited gift of seeing spirits. The spirits are angry and becoming more violent. He decides to leave the city after being physically attacked one too many times by a spirit. He ends up in a small town with local realtor, Jay McClaren. However, the spirits in the small town also seem to be violently angry. What is happening in the spirit world?

I was engrossed in this one from the start. Cade was so worn down but was willing to step up when needed to protect Jay and his son Sam. The mystery was pretty good and it made a lot of sense once revealed. I loved Cade’s uncles and how they supported him. I didn’t care for Jay’s ex-wife and how she didn’t take responsibility for causing the whole ordeal instead pushing the responsibility off on someone else. The romance was a little instalove but honestly with everything else going on it made a lot of sense to not have the relationship be angsty or unclear. I love Jay and Cade together. The epilogue seemed to hint that there could possibly be more books about Cade, Jay, and Sam and I would love that! This was an entertaining story regardless if there are more or not. I recommend it!

An excellent addition to a brilliant series. Here's hoping that this will be the first in a series, lots of potential. I loved the relationship building between the MCs, it was really fast but felt right. All the best parts of reading own voice authors for me was here. The ghosts were really scary, and the plot was quite captivating.

“All alone in a dark basement with a muscled gym bunny? Sounds like fun.”

This was one adorable, haunted story.

I loved the single dad aspect, because that kid was adorable he was so sweet. And the way he stepped up to do his duty was so sweet.

Jay was fun. I liked how even though he was a single parent with a hell of a lot of stress, he was still fun and the best dad. And damn was that boy obsessed with his bears fur.

Cade was a sweetie, he has no reason to help out these two but he chose to anyway. And for a big bear of a man, he was so soft and gentle and kinda fell into the step dad role so well.

A sweet spooky story.

🌟🌟🌟🌟.5

“And then there was Cade- a massive human being who was quite possibly the gentlest creature I’d ever met, caring of everyone around him, with a heart of gold and generous to a fault.”

I loved this book!! Cade and Jay are the sweetest together. Cade is so protective of Sam from the beginning; I loved their relationship and Sam’s adoration of Cade. The plot was engrossing, the world building exceptional, and the secondary characters were well-developed and engaging. I absolutely adore reading Own Voices and this one is done beautifully.

What a great book. Cade is a medium who helps people “clear” haunted areas. When the job became too much, he found a listing for houses in a rural area. He emailed the real estate agent who found some homes for hi to view. When he met Jay, sparks flew. After finding a house that was ghost free, he purchased it. When they realize that Sam’s imaginary friends are actually ghosts, they look into it to find out more. I loved this world and hope there are more stories with the three of them.

I've been reading J. P. Jackson's books for a long time now, and I think Medium Rare is his best one yet.
Cade is a medium who helps people learn to live (or to not live with) the spirits who inhabit their homes. But something has changed: ghosts are suddenly becoming violent in his city, and a frightening and painful encounter sends Cade fleeing to buy a house in a less populated (and thus, fewer ghosts) town outside of Edmonton. A sexy real estate agent named Jay helps Cade find the perfect house, but Jay's adorable son Sam has his own ghost troubles, and it's turning deadly. Cade and Jay, who are quickly falling for each other, have to do everything they can to protect Sam, but there's a surprising twist only Cade can help with.
This book was delightfully scary, hot and sexy, and had a fabulous story from beginning to end. I love Cade's Uncle Gally, and his whole family is wonderful. I definitely recommend it.

A good story featuring ghosties being mad and taking their anger out on people. Some scenes descriptions aren’t pretty as deaths of secondary characters are included. I liked this story which was a first read for the author. The storyline kept moving with dramas with more happenings with twists going in different directions. My Full Blog Review Link

Cade is a medium who cleanses houses of spirits. When the ghosts become more violent, he enlists Jay, a real estate agent to help him find a home that is spiritless to live in himself. In this paranormal book with some horror incorporated, the two fall for each other between solving the who, why and whatever of the ghost infestation along with the help of Sam, Jay's ten year old precocious son. Pretty spooky with some romance and some angst, even death, this was an unexpected Halloween treat with intros to possibly more. I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.

I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them. I am pleased to say this one is no exception. This is a 5/5 for me. Cade is a medium who tries to help people get rid of their unwanted ghosts. But something is happening with the ghost and they are becoming more aggressive. So he decides to move to a smaller town. He meets Jay a real estate agent who helps him find the perfect home. But the two men see a spirit kills Jay’s assistant. To make matters worse, Jay’s young son is sensitive to ghost and one attacks him. Jay and Cade are attracted to each other but Cade wants to protect Jay’s from the ghosts. Jay will have to broaden his beliefs about things in order to be there for his son. If Cade and Jay cannot figure out what is going on things will get much worse.

author wants to type out each movement required for someone to hand another person their phone.
but then skips things like how a 10 year old got home when it was established earlier that he needed to be picked up daily.
but also doesn’t give details/descriptions on the things that should get more attention, like any of the ghost encounters.

characters constantly winking.

author does not know what “glared” means, among other common words
- [““Ah, Jay, are you sure there’s been no family deaths here?” Jay glared at me. “Why?” His face went ashen as he slowed his steps toward me.] makes no sense for him to be angry at that question and then it’s immediately shown that he’s not angry he’s lowkey scared

characters say things in 1 chapter, they say it again in the next chapter and other characters react as if they’d heard it for the first time.

DadMC constantly sexualizes MediumMC before they meet. and also after they meet but before they acknowledge mutual interest. Saying “oh he’s hot” would be one thing, but the repetitive fantasizing of what his client looks like naked is unprofessional and gross and extra icky that the bi character is a bit of a creep/perv.
DadMC is also disgusting with his assistant that he has no interest in and has never been involved with but calls her a “sex kitten” and like lowkey slutshaming for her clothes. If her clothes are that bad then they’re unprofessional, but DadMC is super unprofessional so guess he wouldn’t know to be a proper boss and enforce dress code.

author repeatedly mentioned the 10year old Sam in the same sentence as MCs’ (both the dad’s and the dad’s LI) sexual innuendo/thoughts.
- [“…[Sam] then looked at me, before blushing the exact same way I’d made his dad turn red in the car not five minutes earlier.”] the way he’d been blushing while you were flirting/near kissing. I don’t think any of them are pdfs but it’s weird and author could have picked literally any other feature for dad and son to ah e in common. PLUS blushing isn’t even a distinctive thing??
• [““Will you two stop being all proper on account of me? Just sleep in the same bed as Dad. It’s a king size. You’ll never touch each other unless you want to.”] WHY is the 10yo making that kind of innuendo?? DIRECTLY TO HIS DAD AND THIS MAN HE MET TODAY??
• [“Sam pointed toward the flat screen I kept in my room. I wasn’t going to tell him I used that for more adult content later at night while he was asleep. For all he knew I watched the news on it while falling asleep, which I did, but after I’d satisfied myself with some furry man porn.”] why would you even have the thought of telling/not telling your 10yo that you use the tv for porn. that thought shouldn’t occur to you to the point that you have to think “no I won’t tell him”

dialogue is like no human conversations I’ve heard; responses to questions/statements often don’t make sense.
• [“So, the last place I’m going to take you to is a pocket listing.”
“What’s that?”
“Pocket listing?” Jay asked and then I nodded.] WHAT ELSE COULD YOU POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN ASKING HIM TO DEFINE

not a clue what this moment is. just. why were they watching him and then not saying anything when he talked to them???
[“Sam showed up and started rifling through the cabinets and pulling out kitchenware. He set the table for us. We watched him. “Okay, all ready if you two are done having adult conversations. Can we eat? I’m starving.” Sam studied us for our reactions, and when he didn’t get one, he turned to his dad, “So, I’m gonna guess and say Cade is staying over tonight because of the storm?…”

A Family Drama with Ghosts, Lots of Ghosts!

Did author J.P. Jackson just write his first ever Family Drama? Did he write a novel about family and community? Did he craft a story about people and how we all rely on each other? Did Jackson share a story about love and romance between not only two men, but them and their families? Could I have possibly read a novel by J.P. Jackson that didn’t make me want to hide under the covers, leave all the lights on, and call in a local priest to vanquish evil spirits?

The answer…

Yes. Yes, he did. However, in Jackson’s style you’ll get a dose of horror and gore and a lot of well written and tasteful ‘adult playtime’. Jackson’s words, not mine.

Honestly, this is quite possibly one of the best Romantic Fantasy or Romantic Horror novels I’ve read in a long time. Typically, with Jackson, you are in for a bloody good time with a lot of ‘adult playtime’. He is one of the masters of horror and telling tales that are creepy and dark. Making you not want to turn the next page, but darn it you have to, because you want to find out what happens and you want to find out how his characters are going to get out of the mess Jackson has put them in.

Medium Rare is a lovely story about community and what two men will go through to save and protect not only their family but also their neighbors.

As always, Jackson takes you on a wild adventure through the Canadian Prairie Lands of Alberta, which grounds the story in so much realism that you actually believe these are people going through some difficult times and not a story about some characters. Our two main characters are what you would expect from Jackson; rugged, men in their thirties, who would be classified as Bears. As with all of Jackson’s books you get a healthy dose of these two characters sexual adventure, which are not just thrown into the story to shout to the reader ‘here is your sex scene’. These scenes are used as moments of peace and building connections during some difficult times. This is something Jackson does well and I wish more romance writers would pick up on. In a lot of romance stories, I find I skip the sex scenes because they don’t bring anything to the story or they go on way too long. With Jackson these scenes are crafted in a way that you don’t feel like you’re being bombarded with ‘smut’ just to get the reader off (sorry that’s crass, but I couldn’t think of a better way to explain what I mean).

Romance aside, this is creepy and sweet. You definitely care for everyone involved and you absolutely hope that everything will work out. As always, Jackson’s characters are put through the ringer and you have to worry about if they’ll make it out okay. With Jackson, you can never be too sure.

Honestly, I enjoyed this book and read it one sitting. If you want an excellent romantic horror novel, this is the one for you. Medium Rare is part of the Haunted Hearts an Own-Voices Paranormal Romance Series celebrating own-voice authors and all things creepy and spooky.

This was my first by JP Jackson, in fact, most of the authors in the Haunted Hearts series have been my first, and it was fantastic.

I was super invested in the ghostly mystery romance. The characters were interesting and likeable.

Cade is a reluctant medium, especially now that the ghosts have turned angry and violent. He meets Jay, a real estate agent, when he decides to flee the city in hopes of finding somewhere less ghostly.

They have instant chemistry, but their first meeting doesn’t go quite as planned, as Jay is confronted with learning ghosts are real. Not only that, but his son, Sam, can see them too. I can’t imagine being a parent and finding out you can’t protect them from the supernatural. Thankfully Cade is there to help them (and love them) both.

Though things between them move quickly, it’s believable given the circumstances. Kind of a forged-in-fire situation. There’s also some fun twists that keep things interesting and me glued to the page.

I’m especially fond of Cade’s and Sam’s relationship. Cade makes a wonderful step-dad. Oh, and Cade's uncle is hilarious. I'm going to be laughing about 'medium rare' every time a medium comes up now.

This was such a lovely book to read, low angst and characters that left me wanting more.
Cade had had enough, ghost were getting angry and he just wanted a break. Wanting somewhere quiet, he gets in touch with Jay to help get him that perfect home to escape in.
To say Jay was obsessed with Cade was an understatement, he was practically drooling over Cade's website photos.
I instantly liked Cade and Jay straightaway, whilst Cade was used to non-believers, he wasn't one of these snarky mediums, he was respectful to other's views and when Sam was in trouble he stepped in without even thinking about it. Jay was a great dad, Sam came first and whilst at first, he was sceptical about Cade's abilities he never once put Cade down.
Whilst there was attraction on both sides straightaway, the romance wasn't rushed. Well the spirits don't have any boundaries as we found out at the start with one of Cade's back stories which did have me laughing
This book kept me riveted, reading it fairly quickly. Parts took me by surprise as I thought I knew where it was going, only for it to go in a completely different direction. There are some graphic scenes that gave the horror loving part of me a thrill and so descriptive there was no denying my imagination.
Pretty please can we have a series on Cade, Jay and Sam and could see it going on forever, with a spin off when Sam comes of age. Yes I have thought about it way to much

Medium rare is the eighth book in the Haunted Hearts series.

It´s a small town urban fantasy romance, with bi rep.

Cade belongs to a family where the gift of seeing ghosts is passed down from generation to generation. He inherited this gift from his mother and dedicates his life to it. But in recent months the ghosts have become aggressive and he is quite tired because the gift interferes even in his love life. (Grant Aunt Sophie🫣) So he decides to leave the city and look for a house in a small town where there is less spiritual activity.
He contacts Jay, a real estate agent and single father.

The attraction between the two is almost immediate. But first they have to solve the mystery of why the ghosts are becoming more and more aggressive, in order to help Jay's son, Sam, who also sees ghosts.

I really liked the book, not only the love relationship between the protagonists, but also the mystery. The secondary characters, such as Uncle Gallius, help the story to move forward.

I am discovering many authors who had passed under my radar through this series and I would like to continue exploring their work, as is the case with this author.

A story of a medium who tries to run away from his job when all the ghosts get violent, except that the same problems exist where he runs away to. There he meets a man whose son also has a talent with the dead.

Seems like a great setup, but the characters are a bit one dimensional. Other than the very high external stakes of people getting ripped apart by angry spirits, we don't really know why this is especially bad for these two men. Dare I say that you could put almost any two other people in these roles and you'd have the same story?

So ultimately, without enough characterization, the stakes/conflicts ended up feeling a bit contrived.

Medium Rare - Teddy Bear

‘His face held nothing but kindness. Radiantly sexy, but there was no mischievousness, no hot longing desires. But what was there? A sense of comfort. A safe space. A refuge. He shimmied out of his underwear, dropped them by his feet, and then drew me up in his arms and held me.’

A wonderfully haunting romance by JP Jackson, Medium Rare chronicles Cade, a psychic who can see the dead. Trying to get a reprieve from his ghostly manifestations, he looks into moving away from his city dwelling full of increasingly mean spirits.

Jay is the single father realtor that Cade choses from an ad, who happens to have a son in crises with his ‘imaginary’ friend. Strange and sensuous, the two men find common ground, which leads to romance with quite a bit of horror thrown in for good measure.

As part of the Haunted Hearts male author collaborative of MM paranormal series, JP Jackson finds the perfect balance of soul seeking romance and horror!

Not one word of this novel is a word wasted. It was fun, witty, a great plot and moved along at a fast pace, yet not too fast that it felt rushed.

I knew I was in safe hands with this author as I LOVED the Skin Sessions series, and this novel did not disappoint. Cade and Jay are a wonderful couple who have chemistry as soon as they meet, but their feelings have to be put aside so they can deal with the ghosts seen by Jay's son. The kid in question is written realistically. He's a likeable lad who has been given a talent, without his consent, and now has to deal with the consequences.

I loved how the themes surrounding family, former partners, bisexuality and past grief were managed deftly, with a light hand, whilst dealing with the dead with humor and kindness. I honestly think this author's work is getting better and better. This latest offering is a compelling read that will keep you turning the pages long into the night.

- paranormal
- horror
- single dad

This is part of the multi-author Haunted Hearts series, but I read it as a standalone. Cade is a psychic medium who decides to change his life when a ghost encounter turns violent, and it isn't an isolated incident. Jay is a single dad, an estate agent who helps Cade with his house hunting.

I really liked this story, and I liked both Jay and Cade very much. There's absolutely no agnst between them, the two have a connection and both feel it, although Jay is a single dad, he's openly bisexual and his ex-wife is very much a career woman but still involved with his son Sam's life. I liked the premise of the story too, there's a real horror element to it as the spirits turn violent, but also a slight mystery too as Cade tries to figure out why it's all happening. I very much liked the communication between not only Cade and Jay, but with Sam too as they explain what's going on and his part in it.

There's a fair amount of heat too, but with the right amount of communication so they're on the same page, it's all very healthy and not something I see too often in books, it was refreshing. I loved the ending and how it's left open for more adventures with Cade, and I'm more than up for that. Bonus for being set in Canada too. More please!

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

I received this ARC for my honest opinion. Medium Rare by J.P. Jackson was a fabulous read. Cade has a gift of being able to see and communicate with those who have passed one. He was scared on the last investigation he was on and wanted a way out. Jay is the real estate agent whom he has contacted to make sure he can buy some property to be able to finally relax. Snowstorm hits and Cade and Jay spend some time getting to know each other. Jay’s son starts to experience some of the more malicious things cade has seen in the past few with spirits. Cade and Jay work together to find a solution while falling in love. This story was such a good read. It was something that struck a lot of chords with me personally and I could relate to the characters well. J.P. has done it again. I highly recommend reading.

This a a perfect series for this spooky time of year, all the stories have been excellent. I have a love of ghost stories and haunted places, so this was right up my alley. It’s pretty perfect for me, a really lovely romance set within an intense and gripping ghost story. I loved how Cade and Jay ban together try to understand what is going on with Sam’s hauntings. This was a great read, wonderful characters, a well developed setting, and some genuinely chilling ghost encounters. I LOVED the ending- what a fun twist and I really would love more from Jay, Cade, and Sam.
